Error "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read

iTunes was uninstalled from my computer and I need to reinstall it. I tried to download 7.3.2 but it says I already have iTunes on my computer. When I try to open iTunes I get this error message:
"The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
What does this mean?

It means you had a newer version of iTunes installed previously, such as v7.6.
Why did you download 7.3 and not 7.6?

    Hi pussygalore,
    If you are having issues with iTunes after an attempted update, you may find the following article helpful:

    You may want to make sure that in the last step (reinstalling iTunes) that you are installing the latest/newest available version, and not attempting a reinstall from an older file.

  • Error The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read......help

    I still can not open iTunes, and I keep getting an error message that tells me that the file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I am currently using version 7.5.0.20
    Thanks in advance for any of your helpful ideas!

    I have declined many of the updates, as they take so long to download on dial up...(yup, I live in the sticks!)....I am still running version 7.5.0.20 but cannot open iTunes at all and receive the error I posted earlier, and am wondering if updating to version 8 will rid me of the error, or make things worse?
    I did a system restore a few weeks ago and am wondering if that affected my iTunes at all....just a thought. Still need to hear your ideas to fix my problem.

    If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
    Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

    zepel has it, but perhaps some more detail will help.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!

  • When I try to access iTunes I get 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.' But when I try to download iTunes I get error (-42408)...help please.

    When I try to access iTunes I get 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?'' But when I try to down load I get "unknown error occurred (-42408)". Don't know what to do next and I can't get into my iTunes library. (I have an iMac, OS10.6.8.)

    Did you uninstall iTunes 11 and replace it with iTunes 10.7? If so, you'll need to go through a few steps to put things right:
    Rename "iTunes Library.itl" to some other name;
    Copy newst ITL file from the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder into your main iTunes folder and rename it to "iTunes Library.itl";
    Download iTunes 10.7: http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
    Download/install shareware app called Pacifist;
    Open Pacifist and, separately, mount iTunes DMG file -- drag iTunes PKG file into Pacifist and install iTunes via the Pacifist application -- be sure to answer yes to replacing everything Pacifist asks about;
    Enjoy iTunes 10.7.
    Cheers,

  • Error message: "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."

    I uninstalled iTunes, and reinstalled, (most current version of iTunes, of course) per advice given on this forum.  I got this error message when I tried to open iTunes: "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."  Resolution of this issue would be great.  It seems as if I am having at least as many problems now with iTunes as I have had with Windows products in the past.  That really *****!

    I know this is an old thread, but the information in it solved my current problem (Windows Vista, upgraded to iTunes 11.2 and resulted in this same .itl error message).
    So, I'm here to thank turingtest2 for his excellent instructions to fix my problem. One of tt2's many detailed instructional tips). THANK YOU TURINGTEST2!
    PS I'm generally reluctant to "mess with files and such, preferring to use Windows Restore, because it just doesn't seem right to me that end users of Apple devices should have to get into the guts of files and such. Sadly, I have finally just accepted that iOS updates never work right and I either have to deal with work-around fixes or never update. Eventually we do need to update or there will be other problems. All I can say is, I'm sure glad there are folks like turingtest2 here who spend so much time helping us.

    I'm trying to install iTunes on my machine and am getting this error message:
    "The file 'iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
    Does anyone know why? How can I fix this?

    In order to play m4p files, you must authorise your new PC. iTunes should prompt you to do this if you try to play an m4p file on an unauthorised PC.
    Apple has a strict download once policy, so you cannot re-download files that you have already downloaded.
    The simplest way to get you files off the external drive is to add the folder containing your music to iTunes with File>>Add folder to library. You need to ensure that "Copy to itunes music folder when adding to library" is checked on the advanced tab of Preferences.
    Doing it this way is easy but you lose counts and ratings etc. If you want to recover these, there are two possibilities.
    If you had your iTunes folder containing the the iTunes Library files on the external drive, You can simply connect to it by doing a shift key start.
    Hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding the shift key until you are promoted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    But I suspect that you had your iTunes folder with lirbary files on your old PC. Recovering the library data is more complicated and I will need more information about your old set up if you want to attempt it.

  • The file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read (error)

    I installed the new iTunes 9, and I received an error saying that iTunes could not be opened because there was an error with Quicktime. I followed Apple instructions and re-downloaded Quicktime, to no avail. So I removed iTunes and Quicktime, downloaded a iTunes 8, and now I have an error that says:
    "the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."
    What do I do?

    I read this by "Noir" it made the most sense, but the question is I went to the link he gave for installing Quick Time (the download that does not say Itunes) and still I cannot seem to get the Itunes opening up. He says that Quick Times has to have Apple Application Support. How does one get that? Alsohe said that different version of itunes requires different version of Quick Time. How does one know what version we have? Besides when I downloaded the Quick Time (without the Itunes version) its still did not down load anything called Apple Application Support. How does one download that?
    Below is the email I am talking about:
    So, under normal circumstances, *_if you uninstall your QuickTime for Windows your iTunes for Windows will no longer launch*_. The exception is if you install a different application such as QuickTime Alternaltive, which also provides QuickTime playback capabilities. However, most such applications (QuickTime Alternative being a good example) are themselves built from actual QuickTime program files. _So there's really no getting away from the requirement to have QuickTime for Windows componentry installed on your computer in order to get your iTunes for Windows to launch and run
    ._In addition to needing some QuickTime for Windows installed on the computer for iTunes for Windows, a given iTunes for Windows version will require at mininum a particular version of QuickTime for Windows to be installed on the computer in order for that iTunes for Windows version to run. For example, iTunes for Windows 5.0.0.35 requires at least a release version of QuickTime for Windows 7.0.2 to run correctly, iTunes for Windows 6.0.0.18 requires at least a QuickTime for Windows 7.0.3, and so on. The same applies for solutions involving other programs like QuickTime Alternative. An iTunes for Windows 6.0.0.18 would require an installed version of QuickTime Alternative to made from (at least) QuickTime for Windows 7.0.3 componentry in order for iTunes to run.
    The most straightforward way to go about getting your iTunes for Windows launching again after you've uninstalled your QuickTime for Windows is simply to reinstall QuickTime for Windows. You can get the latest version of QuickTime for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 from the following download page at the Apple website. (Use the download link that doesn't mention iTunes.)
    Latest QuickTime for Windows version
    The relationship between iTunes and Apple Application Support
    iTunes for Windows uses a number of the same program files as other Apple software for Windows (most notably, QuickTime for Windows and Safari for Windows). Starting with iTunes for Windows version 9.0.0, QuickTime for Windows version 7.6.4, and Safari for Windows 4.0.4, program files common to more than one of the programs have been stored in a single location: "Apple Application Support".
    So, if you uninstall your Apple Application Support (using the Add or Remove programs control panel in Windows XP, or using Programs and Features in Windows Vista or Windows 7), your iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) will no longer launch ... because several essential program files for iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) will have been uninstalled.
    At the time of writing this user tip, Apple Application Support is not available as a "standalone" download from Apple. It is only available as part of the installer bundles for the most recent versions of iTunes for Windows, Safari for Windows and QuickTime for Windows. So if you have uninstalled your Apple Application Support and your iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) is no longer launching, the most straightforward way of getting your iTunes for Windows launching again is to uninstall your existing version of iTunes for Windows and reinstall the latest version of iTunes for Windows. (The iTunes reinstall should also reinstall your Apple Application Support.)
    Latest iTunes for Windows version
    If, however, you've uninstalled both your Apple Application Support and your QuickTime for Windows, the most straightforward way of getting them both reinstalled is to download the latest QuickTime for Windows installer from the Apple website. (Use the download link that doesn't mention iTunes.)
