Error "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified"

When I drag a song from my ITunes library to my Nano, an error pops up that says "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified." I've read on other boards that I should delete the IToner bundle, but there is no IToner bundle in ITunes plug ins, just a Quartz Composer Visualizer. ANy suggestions on how to keep the error message from popping up every time I add a song?

Drag the song from Library to the playlist window then drag it to Devices instead of directly from the Library.

Hmm.  It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Itunes says 'the ipod cannot be synced A duplicate file name was specified?

it says this - 'the ipod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified' every time i plug in my ipod, i have not downloaded a new itunes recently, nor do I have a new ipod, this came from completely out of the blue.

The solution i found to this problem is have windows hard drive recovery tool scan and repair the hard drive on you ipod. To do this, you need to configure itunes so it does not open when you plug in you ipod. Next, plug in your ipod, for windows 7 user a pop up should come up asking to scan and fix device. click yes and give it some time. after the tool in complete unplug you ipod, open itunes, plug your ipod in. if you still get the message, click restore, and start this process on more time. If you do not have windows seven or this pop-up does not appear manually go to you hard recover tool and have it scan your ipod. then follow the rest of the process.

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved A duplicate file name was specified

I keep my music and my library file on an external drive. I've been having this error whenever I try to download the updates for my iphone apps, and then after it's popped up once, it continues. After I quit the app, when I try to restart iTunes it won't open because of an unknown error 13014. If I trash the itunes genius and extras files, I can get iTunes to open again, but then I'm back to the library file cannot be saved problem.

    I found the solution:
first you have to locate your last library file, you can do this by clicking Edit-preferences-advanced. it will show you the itunes media folder location. then close Itunes
open your folder and locate the last library (libraries are saved with date names, find the most recent one or the one that was last modified).
change the name of the library to today´s date following the format it already has. you will have to change the name for libraries: .itl, .xml, genius and extras.
once you have changed the name to today´s date on the 4 libraries you will have to delete all other libraries existing on the same folder or on a folder named "previous itunes libraries". it is also recommended to delete the itunes "preferences file" .dat (usually 1kb) and the "sentinel" file.
so, you will have on your itunes media folder only 4 libraries: .itl .xml genius and extras.
the next step is to click the itunes icon holding the "shift" key . itunes will ask you to either "quit, choose library or create library" click on choose library. then locate the library you just renamed with today´s date and extension .itl
done, itunes will open with the last saved version of your library. keep in mind that some changes or songs will not be present if you added any while getting the error "itunes cannot save the library file. a duplicate name has been specified" just locate the songs and add them again, if you have the option "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library" checked. then go to file-add folder or file-and locate the songs missing on the itunes media folder.itunes saves the files on the hard drive but does not save the changes on the library.
    hope this is clear enough.

  • I am getting and error message saying a duplicate file name was specified

Help I am trying to sync new songs onto my Iphone and keep getting an error message telling me "the iphone can not be synched. a duplicate file name was specified" how can i fix this,

I have a 27" iMac with the latest version of iTunes.  I tried restoring my iPod and even removing and re-installing iTunes.  What eventually worked for me was plugging into my PC and restoring/reformatting it to work with my PC.  I don't know why it wouldn't work with my iMac, but now it seems to be working.

can some one help me,  each time i plug my ipod into the computor it keeps saying ,, a duplicate file name was specified, how can i change this file name ,,it seems to be the name of the ipod ,,?

    Hi stelincs,
You should be able to change the name of your iPod classic in the iTunes application.   Here's how:
Change the name of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997
    Use your computer
Connect your device and open iTunes.
Click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.) If you don't see your device, choose Hide Sidebar from the View menu.
Next to the picture of your device, double-click the name of your device.
Type the new name for your device and press Return on the keyboard.
Sync the device (press Sync in the bottom right corner of the screen).

  • Ipod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified (Ipod Classic)???

Whenever I plug my ipod classic in to itunes I receive the following message:
The ipod "ipod name" cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified
    I have tried the following:
    Renaming the ipod
Running Itunes as an Administrator with the UAC in windows 7 turned to the lowest level
Refreshing device manager to scan for hardware changes
    Restoring the ipod from Itunes
Resetting the ipod itslef (holding down the menu an dcenter buttons)
All of the above of course did not work. I did notice that when I would click ok on the "cannot be synched" message, Itunes would synch the ipod and I would see songs and podcasts on my ipod but they would not play at all.
Someone please help. Again, my OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. I have also tried this on my Windows 7 Professional 32 bit system with the same results. My itunes program on both computers is the latest
