Error: trying to restore time machine mac mini to mac pro

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade our Profile Manager "server" from a Mac Mini to a Mac Pro, but the time machine restore isn't working it halts after 1-2%.
When I tried the backup on a Macbook Air it restored correct and booted.
Anyone got a clue on why I can't restore to a new Mac Pro?
Regards
Johan

Sorry about that.
Mac mini is a late 2012 (10.9.5)
Mac Pro is the new one =) Xeon 6-core. (doesn't really say what model it is.
I've read that guide but it doesn't have anything on TM unexpectedly just crashing/giving up on a full restore.

  • Restoring time machine on a different mac

I'm trying to help a friend. Hi macbookpro died. He can't afford a new one right now, but has an old g4 cube. So now he wants to move the data from the dead laptop to the old g4. Fortunately he ran Time Machine backups to an external firewire drive. So I thought it would be easy enough for me to restore this data for him in a format the g4 could read, but so far no luck.
My first thought was to use migration assistant to copy the accounts from his time machine backup to my mac. But when I select to use Time machine backup or another attached disk, it does not see his time machine backups!
So then I thought, I'll just use the OS install disks to restore his backup to an extra disk I had hanging around. When I do this it lists his disk as containing a Time Machine backup, but when I select it it tells me that no osx system backups found.
So now I'm not sure what to do. Perhaps he does not have a proper time machine backup (although apparently when he plugged the disk into his laptop he just selected the default which is to use it for a time machine backup.
There is a directory on the disk called Backups.backupdb which appears to contain his backups, but most of the stuff there is just links.
He also used this disk to backup files from his g4 (simple drag and drop),
could this somehow effect the time machine backups?
Any idea how to get the data out of his time machine backup - or confirm weather or not it is actually there?
I'm no familiar with time machine - I usually run 10.4, just installed 10.5 on a spare disk to try and help him out.
    Thanks

It sounds like he may have excluded system files from backups.
don't use Full system restore to restore backups from one computer to a different one, especially if one computer is intel and another one a PPC. that will not work.

links? do you mean they look like alaises? that means that you are looking at it from a Tiger machine. You shouldn't. whatever migration option you are using you should migrate to a leopard one.

    no, that shouldn't matter.

as I mentioned you should look at the drive from a leopard machine. try this control-click on Time Machine in the dock and select "browse other TM disks". see if it lets you brows that TM disk.

  • Restore Time Machine backup to another Mac

If I use time machine to backup my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive, then lose my Macbook Pro, can I restore my data to another Mac? Does anyone know the answer

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html
But every indication is that simply starting off the Leopard disk will ask you, if the device (backup) is hooked to the computer.

  • Trying to restore Time Machine back-up from WD MyBookLive - whats the Password?!

    Hi all,
my son has a Macbook Pro running Lion. Yesterday it hung when downloading the 10.7.3 update and wouldn't reboot properly.
We logged in via safe mode and managed to sort this out, however I was initially looking at doing a restore from his time machine back-up. I had booted the recovery partition and chosen the 'restore from a time machine back-up' - then it had prompted me for a username and password to gain access to the back-up...
When I set up the Time Machine Back-ups I always have selected (as recommended by Apple and Western Digital) the Guest user. Therefore I have no idea what the username or password should be??? I've hunted on the web for any kind of answer however theres no certain answer...
I'm hoping someone out there will know what username and password it is expecting? Is this from Time Machine, or a default username/password set by the Western Digital NAS???
I hope someone can help - my time machine backs up both my own, my wifes and my sons macbooks, its all very well having the back-ups but not worth it if I can never get access to them when I need to!
    thanks in advance

I think you are not restoring your files in the correct way.
If what you want to do is to restore a complete Time Machine backup, you have to do it in OS X Recovery, so first hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up. Then, choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup, and follow its steps.
If you want to restore individual files, you cannot restore that type of user files because you are using them. Instead, you can restore individual files in your user folders. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • Problems trying to restore Time Machine backup to a new computer

    Hi there-
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to downgrade it from Lion to Snow Leopard. I have Time Machine backups from my slightly older MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. However, when I attempt to restore from the Snow Leopard backup, I get a message stating I can't restore that backup because it was done on a different computer. Is there a way around this so that I can essentially just overwrite my new computer with my latest backup of the older running Snow Leopard? Thanks in advance-

I should say though, I don't know for sure if a complete disk wipe will allow you to boot off the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard disks or not, as I don't fully understand how the firmware works. There are two parts I know of, the hardware firmware and the EFI software firmware.
EFI supposedly has it's own partition on the drive, which should be able to be completly erased.. When I installed rEFIt however (it's a alternate firmware allowing me to boot other operating systems), it required two reboots for it to take hold.
I also should say I've never taken a factory Lion installed machine and put Snow Leopard on it.
So far what I've been able to determine is the firmware is blocking the booting of the 10.6.3 disks (the only retail version there is) so you can't install Snow Leopard, if the firmware can be flashed to a earlier verison the 10.6.3 disks should boot as the hardware drivers for 2011 MBP's reside on the 10.6.3 disks.
But if you have a second Mac, then the target disk mode of the link above should work, you can also create a large  HFS+ journaled partition in Disk Utility in Lion and then use Target Disk mode of the other Mac to install Snow Leopard there.
I wish you luck, you might have to visit MacRumors or another Mac site to get further information. The Lion machines are very new, Apple is resisting attempts to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard and not many have done it yet.
I bought my machine pre-Lion so I can stick with Snow and avoid the Lion pain, but have it on another older Mac for experimental puposes (quad boot).
I'm pretty sure rEFIt will allow you to boot off the 10.6.3 disks.
I'm sorry if I couldn't have been more help, I'm still learning how to get around this 10.6.3 block myself.
If I had a factory Lion machine, I would most certainly post a blog how to downgrade the SOB to 10.6 somehow.

  • Errors trying to use time machine backup

I continue to have failures to use my Time Capsule HD (1 TB) as a backup disk; cites error 60.
I've tried various encryption/login/security measures and it fails with the same response. There must be something more basic that I am overlooking?
Any clues or breadcrumbs would be most appreciated.

If you are running the latest firmware, let me suggest you go back to 7.5.2 .. on a Gen 3 you might find it much more reliable.
Hold down the option key when you select firmware update and the full selection forward and back should present. Choose the 7.5 version.
Make sure you use names that are SMB compatible.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.

  • Mac Mini late 2012 Failed to Restore Time Machine Backup

Try to restore time machine backup to my mac mini. I have made backup right after I got the machine from apple. Now due to some reason I am trying to restore it but failing again and again. Error is something like this:
I have erase disk as default which is required for intel based model but still it didn't work. Please help me out.
Further I have also tried installing fresh 10.8 OSX by making bootable usb. It also didn't work. A question mark appears right after I select USB Bootable Drive at start.
    Thanks

Yes same. When I try booting MBP with same usb it goes to recovery menu, (one which comes when you press Cmd+R) I think my MBP is running mavricks thats why it dont go to 10.8 setup. Further when I select same usb in mac mini it shows following screen.

  • Restoring a time machine backup from a Mac mini to a new Mac mini server

    Hi,
I just replaced a faulty Mac mini with a Mac mini server. I have a time machine backup of my Mac mini and want to transfer it over to the Mac mini. How do I do this?

This is a bit of a guess... But I Imagine you would have to start with the workstation OS install DVD first, and go from there at the appropriate point. Any chance you have or could make a CCC backup instead? I am assuming you could boot a mini server from a backup of mini non-server. Then you could copy it over. This is probably worth a phone call to Apple TAC

  • I tried to install a new hard drive using Snow Leopard to back up with Time Machine. When I installed the new HD I installed Leopard (10.5) on it and tried to use time machine to restore the backup I had made using 10.6. Kernel panic screen occurred.

I backed up my system using 10.6 Snow Leopard's Time Machine to an external hard drive. I did this because I purchased a new internal hard drive to upgrade my 2007 White Macbook from 80GB to 320GB. When I installed the new hard drive, I installed 10.4 (Tiger) and then 10.5 (Leopard) and once Leopard was in I tried to use Time Machine to restore my backup from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and received a kernal panic screen directly after the bootup.
The screen had code asking for 10.6, so does this mean that the computer is searching for Snow Leopard? If so, how can I do this? Will a bootable drive with Snow Leopard on it be able to solve the issue or will I somehow need to find a way to wipe out this new hard drive?

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • Mac Newbie - System restore/Time machine type question

Hi There, Macbook newbie here, got my macbook for xmas and I am totally converted.
I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of how to set up a 'system restore' type of thing similiar to the windows system restore via time machine.
Do I need to connect to an external hard drive for this?
External hard drive question, are there special 'mac' external hard drives or could I just pick anyone up eg seagate/freecom etc?
Anti virus question: which software would you recommend for Anti virus?
Appreciate any help and looking forward to making them most of my new mac!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
In addition to the info offered by Jolly Giant, Time Machine is rather different from the system restore feature of Windoze.
First, a bit of terminology: +Time Machine+ is the software built-in to recent Macs that does backups and restores. It can back up to an internal HD, an external HD, or a +Time Capsule,+ which is a piece of Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive.
Technically, this forum is for +Time Capsules;+ there are separate forums in the Leopard and Snow Leopard sections for +Time Machine.+
Time Machine backs-up +*your entire system+* -- OSX, apps, configuration, users, settings, preferences, data, etc. It also keeps previous versions of things you've changed or deleted (so it needs more space than what's used on your system).
You can then easily browse the backups and restore selected items, if you've deleted or changed them in error, or they somehow got corrupted.
Or, if something goes terribly wrong, you can also restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if that's a previous version of OSX. That's the procedure Jolly Giant referred you to in the FAQ Tip.

    Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using

Hello Drake, I suspect one or more of the Drives needs repairing, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

    Thaks,

This often means the backup is corrupted.
First of all reboot the network.. turn everything off and restart in order.. modem.. TC.. clients.
If you still have issues, hold the option key when you click the Time Machine icon on the top menu and it will bring up verify backups.
    Do that.

It seems to be a fairly complex problem if the above don't work.

Could not restore Photoshop CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3 - the change was dictated by a power supply problem (now fixed) in my Macbook Pro - that has been fixed.

Restoring the Adobe application via Time machine is not a good practise and may cause other issues as well.
Please install the application properly rather restoring.
