Error upgrading to iTunes 9

This question was marked as answered by mistake so I have reposted the dialog. Sorry.

I need to upgrade to ITunes 9 because I have a new IPod that will only work with ITunes 9.
I selected "Check for updates" on my dashboard and it showed 9 was available so I selected it for download.
The download started and then issued this error _
"Error occured while installing updates. If the problem persist, choose Tools>Download Only and try installing manually."
Thanks,
Sarah

Let's try instead downloading an installer from the Apple Website. Here's a link:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does that install go through any better?
If you get an error on that install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

I went there and ran the download and got this error
"c:\Documents and settingd\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
Content.IE5\9DUTC5U3\iTunes Setup[1].exe is noe a valid Win32 application"

Aaaah. Generalised network connection issue probably underlying both the ASU update attempt and the website download update attempt, Sarah.
What browser did you use for the download from the Apple Website? Do you have any better luck if you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa)?
(Firefox handles network connections a little differently from other browsers. So if IE is being grumpy, quite often Firefox can handle the download successfully. Or if Firefox is being grumpy, IE can sometimes get us home.)

My original attempts were with IE
FireFox up and running
I downloaded from the link you provided http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
I clicked on the option to save and a download dialog box opened with 2 downloads at the same time within it (iTunesSetup.exe and iTunesSetup(2).exe)
It did not say where it was being saved to and I'm not sure what step to take next.
Thanks

Hmmmmm.
I clicked on the option to save and a download dialog box opened with 2 downloads at the same time within it (iTunesSetup.exe and iTunesSetup(2).exe)
I think we'd better clear both of those away, and try another download. (One of them is probably the dodgy one you downloaded with IE.)
In your Downloads window (in Firefox, go "Tools > Downloads" to open that), rightclick on the iTunesSetup.exe entry and select "Open containing folder". Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe file, and select "delete". Go back into the Downloads window, rightclick on the iTunesSetup.exe entry and select "Remove from List".
Repeat the process with the iTunesSetup(2).exe file and entry.
Now both of them are out of the way, download and save another iTunesSetup.exe. When it has finished downloading, right-click the new iTunesSetup.exe and select "Open containing folder". Now doubleclick the iTunesSetup.exe to start the iTunes install.
... any better luck with that one? Or do you get another error message?

No luck!
A Windows Installer dialog box popped up and says
"The Windows Installer could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if
the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personel for assistance."

Hmmm. I think the Windows Installer Service is probably fine here. I think that might be another issue with a damaged installer.
How are you connecting to the Internet, Sarah?
For example, my Lenovo T61 is connecting wirelessly to a LinkSys WRT54G wireless router that is plugged into a Motorola SB5100 Surfboard cable modem.
What sort of setup do you have?

I some how marked this message as solved. It is not!
Thanks Sarah

Am seeing the same problem. I am no longer able to sync my bookmarks between Safari on my Mac at home and my Windows (Dell) work laptop via MobileMe. I believe this service is responsible for the syncing and causing the failure. Additionally, on the Windows machine, launching the MobileMe control panel gives the following error...
The procedure entry point CFHTTPCookieGetName could not be located in the dynamic link library CFNetwork.dll.
...and then says the MobileMe Preferences crashed. I think this is all related.

    Hi iTunes-1,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The error message you posted indicates a possible firmware update is needed for iTunes for Windows to work with your CD drive.
iTunes for Windows: Updating the firmware on your CD or DVD drive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201852
Having outdated firmware can cause issues using CDs and DVDs with iTunes for Windows. Firmware is a type of software stored in a chip in hardware that can sometimes be updated.Identifying drives and firmware versions
To run CD Diagnostics, follow the steps in this document.
After following the steps to run CD Diagnostics linked above, look at section three to find out more about your optical drive(s).
Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Upgraded to iTunes 7, get the error report window!

I just upgraded to iTunes 7 from the most recent 6 version. When I tried to open iTunes, however, I got the Windows error message, "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. " In the error report, it said that the file "C:\DOCUME~1\MAXWEN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\5fa_appcompat.txt" would be included. How do I get iTunes to work again?

  • Upgrading / Installing iTunes 7.1 - Detailed Error Report, please help.

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my iTunes to 7.1 Previously, my iTunes was working perfectly fine. I decided to give it a try and upgrade to 7.1 and to my horror, it does not work anymore.
I am running iTunes on Windows XP.
First of all, the installation for 7.1 has NOT worked. It was giving me an error. So, instead, I just assumed that the installation had not gone through, and my previous version was still installed and would function.
Incorrect. I am now getting the error:
"This action is only valid for products currently installed."
This must mean that the upgrade installation that started (but did not finish) must have wiped out the previous installation. Darn. I go back to run the iTunes 7.1 installation to see if it works this time...
Here is where the "big" error is that I can not figure out. The installation bar almost finishes, and runs some of the installation functions (such as copying files, etc.) when it gives me this error:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK and try again, or, enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below"
It then gives me a "browse" function so I can find the correct path to iTunes.msi - my only problem is that I don't know where it is, and after a shallow and basic search through the iTunes program files, I gave up.
    Attached is a screen shot:
    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/159/424601522_fac28e3a9d.jpg?v=0
I have read that it may also be a problem with Quicktime. So, I installed my version of Quicktime, then tried to run the installation package again.
Incorrect again. Still giving me the same error message.
I then went to Control Panel, Remove programs, and tried to manually remove iTunes. During the uninstallation, it gives me the same error message - missing the iTunes.msi file.
This has lead me to desperate measures and post here on the support forums. I hope that someone will be able to help me.
    Thanks ahead of time.

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK and try again, or, enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below"
with that one, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

  • Error -1202 in iTunes for Mac SOLVED with upgrade to Mountain Lion

I recently had lots of trouble with iTunes and error -1202; my summary to Apple support is excerpted below.  Turns out the problem has gone away after updating my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion.  I still don't know what -1202 is, but the problem's gone.  Sympathies to those whose machines can't upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Here's what I wrote to Apple:
I'm having difficulty connecting to the iTunes Store.  When I click on virtually any link in the store, a popup window comes up stating "We could not complete your iTunes store request.  An unknown error occurred (-1202).  There was an error in the iTunes Store.  Please try again later."
I'm using a MacBook Air purchased new at the beginning of this year.  OSX 10.7.5.  I've had the same result trying to get at the Store with this machine from different sites (i.e. work and home).  I'm able to use my wife's Mac (we share the same account on two machines) to access the store without difficulty.  I can purchase something on her Mac and download it to my MacBook Air, but I can't make the purchase--or even navigate in the Store--with my machine.  I've confirmed that the time on my machine is correct, and all the billing information for the account is up to date.  I thought I'd wait to contact you until I had a chance to update iTunes, but the problem persists with iTunes 11.  I've found many references to the -1202 error in the Apple website's discussion area, but none of them have solutions.
Then in follow up to Apple:
I am still having difficulties, and I think I've identified a larger issue.  I can't use my machine to navigate the iTunes store with my Apple ID, and I can't use that same Apple ID to access the App Store, FaceTime, or photo ordering in iPhoto.
I mentioned in my first email to you that my wife's MacBook Pro uses the same Apple ID, and we can use her computer to do all of the functions that the other machine can't:  I can get to FaceTime, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and photo ordering in iPhoto.
I also created a completely new Apple ID, which has been OK'd by the AppleID website, and it doesn't work on my machine, either.
To summarize:  I know the Apple ID works, but there's something about my computer that isn't using it correctly.

You can use the balance of a redeemed iTunes gift card to purchase Mountain Lion.
Keep in mind of any applicable taxes and or fees that may be added to the purchase price.

  • Error message after upgrade to iTunes 11: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point my PC running XP loses all audio.

Several attempts to upgrade to iTunes 11 have failed.  After an upgrade to 11 the error message reads: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point--after the upgrade to iTunes 11--my PC running Windows XP loses audio playback for all functions--in iTunes, in the browser and the volume icon disappears from the System Tray.  Only by removing iTunes 11, and then using System Restore to turn back the OS settings can I return the PC to normal functioning.
I did that.  I reinstalled iTunes 10.5.  Everything seemed fine, but when I try to plug in and copy a CD to my iPhone 4S an error message reads roughly: 'iPhone 4S requires iTunes 10.5 or higher to work.'
What might be the problem with my audio configuration?
Why doesn't my iPhone 4S work with iTunes 10.5?  It used to work with iTunes 10.5.
    Please advise.

  • Tried to upgrade to iTunes 10.7, got error 7 (windows error 5). How do i fix this?

Tried to upgrade and install the latest version of iTunes, 10.7 and received an error after install process. Error states that itunes was not installed properly, and a reinstall is necessary. Shows Error 7 (Windows error 5) in the message. No matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall, the same error persists. Already tried the MS .NET Framework upgrades to no avail. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this issue?

A complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and related software components is worth a try (7s can indicate trouble with other software components like Apple Application Support). See the following documents for instructions:

... But if no joy there, let's check to see if there's a .NET issue underlying this:

  • How I survided Error 1418 after upgrading to itunes 7.0.2

    IT WORKS AGAIN !!!!!!!
    Problem
5.0 Gen ipod, upgraded to itunes 7.0.2 and got an icon at my ipod with a folder shape. Connecting the ipod gaves a "corrupt ipod" message. Trying to restore ipod gave a 1418 unknown error, tried many things like format the ipod at different levels without success.
Tried solutions for 3 days, I gave up and was about to purchase a Zune (didn't find my purchase receipt to claim warranty) but NOW I MADE IT WORK AGAIN!!!
-Uninstalled 7.0.2 and rebooted the PC
    -Downloaded and installed itunes 7.0.1
    - Boot the ipod in disk mode (press menu and play when the apple appears, then a “disk mode” sign appears
    - connected and let itunes detect the ipod as corrupt, then clicked on restore
I’ll stay with 7.0.1 forever, but at the end I now have my ipod working again

There was a Windows block on me installing quicktime + itunes when I first got the ipod and what I did was googled for awhile and found a site that lets you download any version of itunes, and then I upgraded. I forget the link though but its not too hard to find.

When I attempt to upgrade an app in iTunes for windows, I get an error:  "Could not purchase.  An unknown error occurred (11111).  There was an error in the iTunes Store.  Please try again later"
I am running the latest iTunes 10.7.0.21 for Windows 7.
This error occurs if I try to either update the app or if I delete it and attempt to redownload.
I have an iPhone and an iPad.  I am unable to update the apps or install the apps from within the App Store on iOS.
I do not have an AOL ID, as is a common issue with this type of error.
From what I can tell, my Apple ID account seems fine.  I logged in, changed some information, and ensured my credit card is valid and updated.
I can download new apps just fine.  I am unable to update or install apps I have purchased in the past.

After 30 minutes this morning, no resolution. Then another tech support call this afternoon, 15 minutes in, was escalated to a Tier 2 (Senior) advisor. He said something similar to the above ("this is one of the strangest things I've seen"). He was chatted with iTunes guys and took all my info into the case and was escalating it over to engineering. Said they would be in touch.
    So, no solution...yet.
    Just to clarify:
iTunes on Windows7: trying to update an existing app, or re-download a prior app, gives the (11111) error. Downloading a new (free) app worked fine.
App Store on iPhone5, iOS 6.0.1: click on UPDATE, switches to INSTALLING...for a second, then switches back to UPDATE. No error message (and nothing in Diagnostic data).
App Store on iPad 3, iOS 6.0.1: same as iPhone 5.
    Definitely account related.
I have cleared the store cache, signed out and back in, deleted the credit card data, and re-added, rebooting PC and iPhone...nothing works.
Will post if I hear anything back from Apple.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
In your situation I would recommend the steps in the following article for troubleshooting iTunes. It may be necessary to completely remove and reinstall iTunes in this situation. Be sure to remove all of the components with iTunes in the correct order as outlined in the article before installing fresh.
