Error using Disk Utility 'New Image'

I keep trying to make a new image of DVD's using Disk Utility, but it keeps giving me an error message. I'm at work right now and can't remember the specific message, but I've tried several times and it keeps interrupting the process. I've made copies before without any problems, then all of a sudden this started. I still have about 26 gigs free on the hard drive, and these discs are nowhere near that much memory. Anybody have this problem or know how to solve it?

I was able to extract the video from DVD to .m4v format using handbrake. I still could not get iMovie to recognize the file. I then changed the .m4v to .mov and it was recognized. Once I edited my movie I did not realize that sharing would take sooo long to burn back to iDVD. I had a 56 min video clip and it took 3-4 hours to share. I was up all night, but I have a DVD to turn in for my ALCMS training video. Hope this helps!

DISK UTILITY -- "New Image" problems

Maybe I don't get how this works. I used an external USB drive to back up my MacBook Pro, making an image un=sing Disk Utility "New Image." THis seems to have worked fine. When I attach the external drive and double click on the DMG file it open and I seem to have access to all contents.
Today I tried to make a second "New Image" on the same drive of my iMac24" and everything runs and makes a DMG file, but when I click on this one I get a msg saying the disk image "couldn't be opened" with the reason given being "no mountable file systems."
Does this make perfect sense to somebody?
Have I completely misunderstood the use and practice of the "new image" in Disk Utility?

Hey. If you want to make a DMG image of your iMac, you will need to boot off the install DVD and use Disk Utility from the DVD. To create the DMG is the same process: Select the "Macintosh HD" icon on the left hand side list of Disk Utility, click the "New Image" button, leave "Image Format" as "Compressed" and its up to you for Encryption, I always leave it as "None".
Select to save your DMG image on the external hard drive and click save. Once the image is done, click on "Image" on the menu bar and click on "Scan Image for Restore...".
That's it!

Error using Disk Utility

Hello again everybody. I am in the process of trying to repair my start up volume it appears to have an error. In disk utility I tried running "verify disk" however it gives an error that their is a"Invalid Parent CName in Thread Record." It then stops checking the volume. How would I go about fixing this. I am running a Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42Ghz with OS X 10.4.10 The start up disk is on a 20 GB hard Drive and I have a 80GB as the slave. Again any information on how to repair would be great. In fsck I get an error like above but with (4, 2065)at the end.

I have attempted to do a disk repair and permissions repair on my mac G4. When doing the repair, I get a very long list of red "Invalid key length'. Ultimately it will indicate it can not repair. I have used Norton Systemworks; also with some problem. After reading some of the discussions at this forum, I've come to think Norton may have contributed to the problem. I have just ordered Diskwarrior from the Apple Store. I am led to believe this may help my situation. Please advise if this is correct, and/or there are any other remedies I might try. Do I need to completely erase my startup disk, or will Diskwarrior work through that? Does it sound like I have a more serious problem that may not be able to be fixed.

I upgraded my internal Boot Drive, used Disk Utility to image and restore..

...Time Machine still recognizes my external drive as the backup disk, and I can still go back in time to bring something back using it.
The problem is that, time machine thinks it needs to backup everything that is on my restored internal drive. So what I have now is this--
Full Backup from original Leopard launch
Incremental Backups
Full Backup (in progress now) since imaging my old internal drive to a new one.
My question: how can I turn what is happening now (a full backup of the present), into an incremental backup (where it should leave off, since it is an image of the same drive)?

Unfortunately, nobody can tell you what you're likely to be able to restore. You can only try. See Recovering deleted files for some suggestions.
The encrypted sparse bundles are the big problem. If all the individual "bands" of the sparse bundle are still intact, you should be able to recover them, although if the recovery software is unable to recover the directory structure, I imagine it may be difficult to piece them back together.
However, if even a few bytes of a single band file have been overwritten, the entire sparse bundle is ruined. You'll never get it open again. A recovery service is not likely to be of any help in that case.
BTW, you definitely need to be posting in the Snow Leopard forum, as there are some fairly significant differences between Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. You risk getting answers that make assumptions on the system you are using, and that won't apply to you.

Clone CD using Disk Utility

Hi. I attempting to make an exact duplicate of a music CD using Disk Utility. It seems to create an image of the disk fine, the dmg file being of appropriate size corresponding to the size of the audio cd. However when I attempt to burn this disk image, nothing happens. I mean, Disk Utility acts as though it's working, but once complete the newly created CD is blank. ??
This is really confusing. If anyone has any advice or perhaps could suggest some third party application for creating, mastering, and burning disk images then that'd be neat.

I record talks at seminars, edit the content, and burn the CDs for participants.
I've previously used Disk Utility to image the audio CDs for an easier burn at a later date. I tried this recently for the first time since Leopard came out and it no longer works.
So I tried it with Disco, and it also fails to image the disc, doesn't even offer it as an option. Funny, I just updated Disco to the latest version several days ago, this reduced function was not noted in the version log.
Strange, has the RIAA gotten something changed so we can't do this anymore? I'm trying to image a disc of my own recordings. It's outrageous that I can't image my own audio disc.
I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner, it failed several times, I tried another method and it seemed to be working, only to announce that it had failed.
Anyone with any clues about this?

"Resource Busy" error during image creation,using disk utility when booting up from installation DVD

Hi all, first post to this community, wish all well
I have a MBP which is more than three years old, installed with OSX Leopard 10.6. Recently the MBP failed to to start and I tried to follow some articles online, including some from this community, to repair my disk, and more importantly, to backup data on the startup disk. But it does not work quite well so I try to seek some help here.
What I have done is to bootup with the installation DVD, try to verify and repair the disk using disk utility, which tells me it can't repair and recommend to backup, erase and reinstall. Am fine with this recommendation but now the problem is on the backup part. There are two partitons on this 500GB hitachi SATA disk. One is 300G which is for OSX itself, and the other 200G was partitioned for Time Machine. The repair failure is on the OSX partition which contains most of the recent data that I want to backup/restore. And unfortunately the Time Machine backup was stopped about two month ago, for some stupid decision I have made , while I am hoping to recover some data for the past month.
Currently the SMART status of the whole disk is verified, the OSX partition is unmounted with no details in the Available, Used, Number of Files, etc. From what I have researched (correct me if I am wrong), I highlight the OSX partition from the list on the left, click 'New Image' button on top, and select the destination to try to create an image of the current partition. But regardless of my desintation (Time Machine partition, or external USB drive), the imaging process always failed with Resource Busy error. Some online search suggest that the partition must be in unmount status but seems it does not apply to this case.
Would be really appreciated if anyone can give me some advice on what's the 'resource busy' error mean, how to backup the OSX partition, or what are the other possible alternatives.

Very poor idea to keep the Time Machine backup file on the internal hard drive. They should always be put on an external drive. As when the internal fails you lose everything. Which is what I suspect has happened.
More then likely your internal drive is failing. the only options to get a new internal drive and a SATA to USB adapter. Install the new drive inside the system abd install OS X on it. Then once that is finished and you are booting from it connect the old drive to the system with the SATA to USB adapter and copy your files off the old drive. That is if you can.

I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup.An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.

I have confused myself with the facts! Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here. First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question. Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option. Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator. Turned Time Machine ON and experienced multiple successful backups! Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far). Had a few more successes. After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK. This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night. Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD! Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few Sleep-bad, Restart -OK repetitions.
It seems consistent: Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.

Now then, I don't understand everything I know here. Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier). Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible. What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

Getting medium write error on burning a disc image using Disk utility

Have a MacBrook Pro 15 inch, circa Summer 2007, using OX 10.4.11. up until recently (as in before February) have been able to burn DVD's using Toast (message Medium Writer Error). Started getting problems where the burn failed. Thought maybe it was Toast, so I tried creating an iDVD project and tried to burn the DVD using that, and it stopped in the middle as well and then spit the disk out with no error message.
, this time I tried creating a disc image, and used disk utility to burn. The process looked like it was going to work but then failed with a message that I have a medium write error.
I have no problems burning a regular data disk on my superdrive so I am thinking it's maybe a software glitch rather than hardware. . Any thoughts, as to what could be causing this problem all of a sudden. By the way, there are other users out there, who seems to be having DVD burning problems all of a sudden, but most people suggest other media. I am using the same stack of DVD-R's from before when I had no problem.

Well, I had assumed my media was ok, since I had a spindle of DVD-R's and had used many of them successfully (until now!, ha ha).
I went out this afternoon and bought another brand (Memorex) and it successfully recorded.
So hopefully this solves my problem, I had no idea it was the media since I had used several of them before.

Using disk utility to burn new image dvd's

Ok I just learned to burn DVD'd using Disk Utility and New image.
But I have come to halt in my burning with a new issue.
My issue is that I have a file that is 4.63GB. When I make a new image so that I can burn it, it increases the size of the file(Video TS) to 5.13GB. Making it to big for a 4.7GB DVD.
My question is is this normal for the new image file to increase in size, and is there a way for me to stop this from happening. Or can anyone give me any other suggestions. Please help.

Ok I have never tried that, as this is the first time it is suggested to me.
The reason i have been doing it via DU, is because this has been to only way to get it to play on
home DVD player and burn with the UDF setting. I was told to do it this way when I was trying to burn
copies of my nieces fifteens that was prof. done on a DVD.
I am trying to burn a copy of a movie so that it can be played on home dvd players. Yes I have done this before and the copies I burned via DU/new image, worked perfectly. And the ones I burned by just choosing file and burning it did not work.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.

Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:

I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive? I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it. If it can, you should repair it as well. You may need to erase it and start a new backup. That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

Error in Copying a non-commercial DVD using Disk Utility

I have a non-commercial DVD. I am using Disk Utility to make an image and reproduce the DVD. It consistently runs through the cycle and at the very end I get a dialog box:
STOP "Input/Output Error"
Any ideas? I really would like to make back up copies of this video event.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)

Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks). So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports). So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks? Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format. Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.

Disk Utility: Create image fails with input/output error

Starting to create an image and saving it into an external hard drive (MacOS extended Journaled).
It starts after less than 60 secs it comes out with an error : Failed to create the image (input/output error)

If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions.

Error message while trying to clone harddrive using Disk Utility

I've been trying to clone my MacBook Pro's harddrive in advance of installing Leopard. I've been trying to clone to a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini. It's connected to my computer with a USB cable. It does about 1/3 of the disk, then I get the following error message:
An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)
At this point the disk cloning stops.
An advice would help, thanks.
