Error using multiple email addresses in IMAP account

Thanks for reading - any help, advice or direction you can offer is very much appreciated!
Here is my situation: I use a single IMAP account with several email addresses. If it's important to know, they are all set up as aliases, so I can receive mail in one single account at all of the addresses and can send email from any of the addresses through the same SMTP account.
This behaves radically differently in Mail (iPhone and iPad) under iOS 6 than it did in iOS 5, and I need the behavior I had in iOS 5.
I am seeking help in figuring out how to make iOS 6 Mail behave the way iOS 5 Mail did.
Here's how I set it up in iOS 5: I used the primary email address (also my login for the IMAP/SMTP account) to set up the account on the iPad. This all worked. Once it was set up, I went back to settings and added the other email addresses as a comma-separated list in the "email" field after the primary one.
Then, when I went to compose a message (from mail, or from any other app), the default "from" address was the primary e-mail address (the first one listed), and it allowed me to tap on the "from" field and select a different one.
This changed in iOS 6, like this:
I set up the account the same way as above. With just the primary e-mail address it was fine. But when I added the other addresses and saved it, it seemed to choose one address at random from the list as primary (not the first one, not the last one, not the one first or last alphabetically, just one in particular - and the same one each time I tried this). Then when I compose mail, it defaults to that alternate email as the "from".
So:
I need to have it default to the primary email address as the "from," I need to have all the alternate emails available to me to choose from, and I need to have it all set up as one account. I have tried to set up a second account on the iPad with all the alternate email addresses, but since the IMAP and SMTP logins are the same, the iPad won't let me.
Any ideas, suggestions, direction, solutions, etc. are very much appreciated!
Details: iPad 2nd gen. WiFi+3G, iOS 6

I think this is a bug, and I've reported it as such. More reports usually equals faster service: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
For now, I've come up with the following work-around:
1. Leave your multi-account as-is set up on your iPhone, but remove your preferred default e-mail address from the list
2. Set up a new e-mail account with IMAP access (i.e. Gmail or whatever)
3. Create a new IMAP e-mail account on your iPhone/iPad with the details of this new account for the IMAP (receive) settings, but with your original e-mail account's SMTP (send) settings. Also, set the "Email" field in the account setup to be your preferred default e-mail address.
4. Set this new mail account as the default in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Now, when you create a new message, you should see that your default "from" address is correct - since it is the only choice for the new mail account you set up in iOS. As long as the SMTP settings are correct, it doesn't matter that your IMAP settings don't match.
You should still be able to select any other "from" address as well, which will use your original multi-account settings, which are also correct.
All of your received mail will come in through your original multi-account inbox, and your new account's inbox will likely stay empty.
It seems like I'm forgetting a step here, but this should give you the right idea for a workaround if it isn't exactly right. Feel free to add corrections if you find them.

  • Question About using multiple email address w/ IMAP server

With apple mail in the account settings you can put multiple email address separated by a comma. This allows you to select your from address when sending new mail.
I have added this to the iphone mail settings but I dod not have the option to select what address I would like to send from. Is there a way to do this.? Thank you.

No, no chance of specifying a different FROM address unless you use the "Other" shortcut on the iPhone to create the mail account.

  • Can you use multiple email addresses on the owa app?

Can you use multiple email addresses on the Microsoft OWA App?

You can do it but there is a delay from the bluetooth speaker.  You'll need an iphone or ipad using the Apple app "Control", airplay setup, bluetooth speaker, and an Apple laptop or desktop.
I used my laptop to connect to my bluetooth speaker so that sound streams to my bluetooth device. Then, on my iphone I opened Control and connect the music to my airplay and my laptop at the same time.  The music goes to your airplay speaker, and then to my laptop which then blue tooths it to my speaker.  But, as I said the bluetooth takes an extra step to stream it and so the music is not in sync.  Its like a second and a half delay....

  • Hi, I use two email addresses within one account with gmx.  I created one account with the first email address now. How do I add the second one to this account? Now it looks like this. One account was opened with address A. I receive in this account email

Hi, I use two email addresses within one account with gmx.
I created one account with the first email address now. How do I add the second one to this account?
    Now it looks like this.
One account was opened with address A.
I receive in this account emails for address A and B.
But I can only write and answer with address A.

    Hi Rudegar,
    Sorry for my late reply.
It s not the amount of accounts I'm struggling with.
When I create now for both email addresses one account, then I receive the same emails two times.
That is not what I want.
Because on gmx the two email addresses have the same inbox and outbox.
E.g. I can login to my gmx account either with email A or B. It doesn't matter.
Now I want to have the same on my ipad.
One account with both email addresses.

  • How can I use multiple email-addresses with "Administration Email Address"

What syntax should I use to have more email-adresses in the screen "Manage Service - Instance Settings - Email" after the field "Administration Email Address".
    I tried:
    - '[email protected]','[email protected]'
    - '[email protected], [email protected]'
    - '[email protected]; [email protected]'
    - "[email protected]','[email protected]"
    - "[email protected], [email protected]"
    - "[email protected]; [email protected]"
    Every time I get the ORA-29279 / 501.
Please help me with the right syntax for multiple email-addresses.
    Thanx!

From a google search of the docs, it looks that that field is used as a FROM address... hence it's by definition only one address.
Administration Email Address - Defines the "from" address for administrative tasks that generate email, such as approving a provision request or resetting a password.

  • Sending mail from mail.app using multiple email addresses?

I'm familiar with the strategy of going into the account settings and putting in another email separated by a comma. That works great and i've had much success doing that. The problem is when I compose a NEW message, it defaults to my...well...default email address. But when I reply to a previous message it gives me the option of picking and it works. When I compose a new email it also gives me the option of picking but it always defaults back to the original one. There is a setting in the compose section of the preferences that lets you pick what email you want it defaulting to. The problem here is that the dropdown box that lets me select my email only works when i'm replying, not composing. Which is a big problem.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Could you confirm what you mean by true alias? I'm not familiar with that you mean. Currently (to recap) i have multiple accounts linked to my gmail account (all gmail accounts) and i have it set up so i can pick the email address i want to use to send an email online in gmail. After setting up IMAP (not POP) i put in "[email protected], [email protected]" in the account settings which gives me the drop down box and allows me to select which email address i want to sent messages from within mail.app. Now i've sent multiple messages to friends to test this, and here are my results. When responding to an email if i select either of the drop down options it will send from that selected address. When composing an e-mail, even if i pick the options, it will default to my first e-mail address.
It just won't let me pick the one i want to send from when i'm composing a new message, but it will let me choose when i reply to an email. sort of a strange occurrence. I know there is an option under "compose" in the preferences that let me choose the DEFAULT e-mail, but i'm assuming that just picks the first e-mail to show up in the drop down. I'm just not sure why it only works when replying, not replying AND composing.

  • Adding multiple email addresses to same account

    Hello,
I am trying to add another email address to my exisiting email account (using Mail). I walked through the steps in Mail Help - I entered the addresses in the email field separated by a comma. Example: Steve1@ sbc.com, [email protected]
I Saved. When I write an email to the new address Steve2 and cc my exisitng address, Steve1. I only receive mail to Steve1.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks.

After giving up to figure this out and talking with
    a rep who
could not figure it out, I did create a new account
    in Mail, so
now I have steve1 and steve2 accounts in the Mail.
    Now it works
but I am still puzzled as to why I cannot add
    multiple addresses
to one account, as instructed in Mail Help.
SBC's term "sub account" must not be an "alias"
    account by definition.
As previously provided, an alias account/address
shares the same user name and password as the primary
    account/address.
If an SBC "sub account" does not share the same user
name and password as the primary email
account/address, it must be created as a separate
    email account in Mail.
The user name for an email account is usually the
portion of the email address in front of the "@" sign
only but for some, it is the entire email address.
This depends on the ISP or email account provider.
Since you were able to create the "sub account" as
separate email account in Mail, is the user name for
the primary account steve1 and the user name for the
    "sub account" steve2?
Yes. Your comment below clears this up.
    Thank you for the help.
If so, this "sub account" is definitely not an
"alias" account and cannot be created in Mail as an
alias account because it is not an alias.

  • How do I cancel one itunes account so that I can use the email address from that account on my current account?

I have had my itunes account connected to my work email address for the past few years.  I am now changing jobs and I am trying to change the email account connected to my itunes account.  When I entered my personal email account it says there was already an account associated with that email address but I've never used it for anything since I created it a long time ago.  Is there a way to cancel that account so that my personal email address is free to use on my current account that I currently have linked to my work email address?

Maybe he's referring to renaming another iTunes Store account after making the email address null and available to be used. Otherwise, I agree with you that it is pointless.

  • Hi my partner used my email address and iTunes account to set up his iPhone and now both our phones have merged! Does anyone know how to separate these? Can he still use our iTunes account with a different Id or email! Please help!!

HI my partner used my apple id and email address when setting up his iPhone so when he turned on iCloud our phones merged!! How do we undo this? Can he still use my iTunes account with a different Id and can he change the email on his phone without losing information? Also iPad is linked too, the family uses this and I would like to keep my phone separate! At the moment nothing is sacred! Please help! We are not very good with computers!!

Several things here so let me attempt to clarify.
For iCloud the reason the contacts where removed from he other device is because you updated your contacts, in this case deleted them, and then iCloud updated the other device to match. By deleting the iCloud account on the device it will stop the device from using that iCloud account and therefore nothing will change on the other device. By using a seperate Apple ID you can still use the features of iCloud, Find My iPhone comes to mind, without your content (contacts, message etc.) merging with the other device
For iTunes, you cannot use two Apple IDs for one account however if you use the same account iTunes on your computer will keep the content on each device seperate very nicely. You can also configure the settings for iTunes and the App store on each device to keep the content from automatically downloading to the other device. What I meant by share apps and music is this. What happens if you find a game, lets say Minecraft, that you really like and it cost, as Mincraft cost, $6.99USD. You buy it and play for a while and then you realize that your husband really likes the game as well. If you both use the same Apple ID for iTunes he can download the $7.00ish game to his device at no additional charge. If you use seperate Apple IDs for iTunes well... it look like he will also be paying for the game to have it on his account. Same goes for Music and Movies
I hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have anymore question.

  • Wrong reply from, when using multiple email addresses

Apple Mail has this strange behavior. Maybe it is a bug.
I have 3 email addresses in Mail: [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]
[email protected] is my primary email address, the other ones are from my co-workers.
Sometimes I get an email with my email address (among others) in the CC field and the other two in the TO field. When I press the Reply All button, Mail generates a new message. But instead of sending it from the [email protected] account, it tries to send it from the first email account what it found in the TO field of the original message. And it does not reply to any of the email addresses in the CC field of the original message.
I tried this with different domains. Same result. Tried it by forcing Mail sending mail from my account only. Same result.
What is going on here? Is it a bug?

Normally mail would create a new email using the top email address in your list of accounts. For example, in in preferences you accounts are listed like this:
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
then normally new messages would be sent from the top email address.

  • Smart folders and multiple email addresses

My wife uses multiple email addresses.  I've tried to set up a smart folder in my mail that would allow me to put multliple conditions that would allow me to have one smart folder that collects emails from her multiple accounts.
The problem I hsve is that it seems I can only have one email address per folder.  If I create a second contition that has "contains" the second email address nothing appears in the folder.
Is this not possible with the mac mail program?

    Hello,
I think the key is in the line here that says "that match->Any" instead of Match all of the following conditions..

  • Multiple email address with one server account

Why can't Mail have multiple email addresses on one email account? Like Thunderbird calls them Identities. As I remember, Outlook also supports this. I like Mail but it seems rather dated and clunky in this respect.
I am using mainly IMAP so maybe I should switch to Thunderbird but I do still have some old messages in pop accounts in Mail.

You can have multiple accounts, but only one "identity." Configure new mail accounts for all the different email addresses you may have. They can each have different configurations, different servers, etc. as well as be individually made active or inactive. All incoming mail will funnel into a single Inbox, but you can use rules to transfer incoming mail to separate mailboxes based on the account.
What you cannot have are distinct "personalities."
Bear in mind that Mail is intended for a single user and the vast number of single users only have one email account. I actually have four different email addresses but three of them are set to forward mail to the account I use with Mail. Mail works quite well with IMAP, POP, and Outlook mail accounts.
