The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
independently of this feature.
If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please
upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)
The vmblock enables dragging or copying files between host and guest in a
Fusion or Workstation virtual environment. Do you wish to enable this feature?
[yes]
VMware automatic kernel modules enables automatic building and installation of
VMware kernel modules at boot that are not already present. This feature can be
enabled/disabled by re-running vmware-config-tools.pl.
Would you like to enable VMware automatic kernel modules?

You must restart your X session before any mouse or graphics changes take

You can now run VMware Tools by invoking "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox-cmd" from the
command line.
To enable advanced X features (e.g., guest resolution fit, drag and drop, and
file and text copy/paste), you will need to do one (or more) of the following:
1. Manually start /usr/bin/vmware-user
2. Log out and log back into your desktop session; and,
3. Restart your X session.

I tried to use these instructions to solve the problem:

However, I don't have the /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source with vmnet.tar file.
I just have /usr/lib/vmware-tools/modules/source with the following files:
legacy vmblock.tar vmhgfs.tar vmsync.tar vmxnet.tar pvscsi.tar vmci.tar vmmemctl.tar vmxnet3.tar vsock.tar
How I resolve this problem?
Thank You!
Now It's working for me! :-) Thanks kikitora for the correct answer and Rahul Jha for this tutorial:

VMware tools installation fails
Hi,
I decided to try out Arch Linux in VMware Player before installing it on my system. The installation so far has gone well but I can't succeed in installing the VMware tools services. During installation I get several errors and warnings. These are the errors:
depmod: ERROR: Module 'hci_vhci' has devname (vhci) but lacks major and minor information. Igonring.
The above error seems not to be critical. But then I get another error when stopping Thinprint and VMware tools though all activities complete successfully:
sh: : command not found
sh: : command not found
Then I get the following errors at the end of the installation:
depmod: ERROR: Module 'hci_vhci' has devname (vhci) but lacks major and minor information. Igonring.
Warning: This script could not find mkinitrd or update-initramfs and cannot remake the initrd file!
depmod: ERROR: Module 'hci_vhci' has devname (vhci) but lacks major and minor information. Igonring.

I have Linux kernel 3.13.5-1-ARCH (x64) on VMware Player 6.0.1 build-1379776 running atop Debian 7 with kernel 3.12.0.bpo.1-amd64. I have also the latest version of VMware tools.I uninstalled the VMware Tools that I had before. Then I installed wget and ran:
wget https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vm/vmware-tools/vmware-tools.tar.gz
tar -xvzf vmware-tools.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools
makepkg -s --asroot
pacman -U vmware-tools.pkg.tar.xz
exit
umount /mnt
reboot
No errors were reported but unfortunately it doesn't work. If I run ifconfig, I can only see the loopback interface. VMware Player doesn't detect any version of VMware Tools installed.

Open-vm-tools/official vmware tools not installing.
I'm trying to install the latest offical vmware tools (16/9/2013) and open-vm-tools but both seem to always fail. I tried some of the patches listed on the wiki, but nothing got me anywhere. The big thing I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to use vmhgfs but, I'd like to have all the tools if possible. Here is what I did.

Any idea what I should be doing?I have the same problem on ESXI 5.5 for over a month now, tried the patches, tried the LTS kernel which others say results in an immediate result without patches, nothing seems to work and nobody seems to be able to offer a solution.
Did you make any progress ??

Hello,
I have been using Veeam 7.0 Backup and Replication to backup all of my VMGuest, but I had issues with one of my VMGuest running Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard. I continued to get the error VMware Tools not running I thought this was an issue with Veeam, but when I logged into vSphere (5.5) it also reports that VMware Tools is not running. When I log into the server via RDP VMware Tools is running. Has anyone had this type of issue before? I have completely uninstall VMware tools and reinstalled it, but had the same issues. You're right, indeed, that the problem seems to have to do with VMWare, rather than Veeam, as the latter relies on the information gotten from the vSphere.
Anyway, during unistalling VMware does the corresponding folder get deleted or not? Sometimes it might happen the underlying folder containing VMware Tools stays intact during uninstall operation and that leads to reсurring issues.
Cheers. -
Networking on Ubuntu VM stopped functioning after latest VMWare tools upgrade
when configuring the latest VMWare tools, I receive the following error:
"The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)"
I have followed instructions on a few different posts to try to fix this, and none have worked.
I have tried running the vmware tools configuration script with --clobber-kernel-modules=vmxnet - that didn't help.
I tried changing ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet" to "vmxnet3" in the .vmx file - that didn't help either.

The memory manager driver (vmmemctl module) is used by VMware host software to
efficiently reclaim memory from a virtual machine.
If the driver is not available, VMware host software may instead need to swap
guest memory to disk, which may reduce performance.
The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
independently of this feature.
If you want the memory management feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

Thanks
NMHello,
Do you mean you are trying to use this tool:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40760
Can you navigate to your %temp% folder and filter by date to see the log of the Build tool?
I want to know which assemblies failed to be verified.
By the way, since MSBuild is embed in Visual Studio why you want to install this again? Do you have any error about this Build Tool when you install Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate?
“Signature or catalog could not be verified” is always related to corrupt source
, please double check you have a healthy network and then try the web installer again.

Cannot access a shared folder Error code: 0x80070035
Hello Experts,
I have been working on this issue for like three days without a solution. I am truly desperate.
My company just purchased a new Cloud Server that we will use as our development environment for a software project. In order for all the developers (which are all over the US) to access the development environment, we need to have a few shared folders on
that new server.
As soon as we got the server I did the following:
1) Installed Active Directory
2) Created a directory and made it shared - yes IT IS shared.
3) I created a few new users on the new active directory domain
THE PROBLEM:
I can't access the shared directory.
Other developers have been successful in connecting to the shared folder (so the share is working) - all except me.
when I open explorer and type \\IPADDRESS\SHAREDFOLDER instead I get this error (I am not even asked for credentials)
Network Error
Windows cannot access \\IPADDRESS\SHAREDFOLDER
Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found.
Things I have already tried:
a) Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP - on all adapters - still did not help
b) Disable IPv6 - I am not sure how to check if it truly disabled
c) Turned off all firewalls - did not help
d) Mapping a Drive using different credentials - I just get asked for credentials over and over
e) Ping - yes I can see the server
f) My credentials are correct because I can Remote Desktop with the credentials with no problem ( I am administrator)
My Machine:
Brand New Asus G Series
Windows 7 Home Edition
Any ideas?
SorcerdonIn my case it was that the OU that my system was in did not have firewall rules for network file and printer sharing enabled. I enabled all of the rules for Domain policy and that fixed it.
I noticed a lot of comments about turning off the firewall not working. I can't be 100% sure, but in my experience with Server 2008 and Windows 7, if you want to configure a service that uses the network the base filter engine and the firewall HAVE to be
turned on while you configure. You can turn the firewall off after configuration, but they have to be active during configuration.
Good luck! -

I've got VMware Player installed/running, 100%, under W7 Pro with a W10 guest. Now I want to access shared folders from the host but folder sharing option is disabled? The advice there is I require VMware Tools.
How do I do that, there is another reference to the CD drive but I do not have a disc for whatever? Can I download a file to install this Tools?
The more I search the more lost I become .
Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks André, I've got access to the virtual CD-ROM drive but because I do not have any discs it always ends up with "Please insert a disk into DVD drive". I then decided to download VMware Tools ISO directly from within the Win10 guest and selected install when it asked what to do with it. All went fine and it's installed after a restart or two.
I may have made a mistake when selecting which VMware Tools ISO because I selected the x86 version and my installed VMware Player is 64-bit? The Win10 guest is x86. During installation I received a pop-up "This virtual machine is running a version of VMware Tools that might have compatibility problems with VMware Player" I proceeded and another pop-up "Setup failed to install the SVGA driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually."
After I activated shared folders within the Win10 guest I had access to the required files on the host and all fine.
Would you advise that I uninstall the x86 version and reinstall the 64-bit version? The missing SVGA driver's impact I cannot see and do not know if I should surf and try and find such a driver? -
I have been banging my head over and over searching for the fix and nothing has worked. Google used to be my friend. I am having doubts.

Access MS Access database on remote computer (shared folder)
Hello,
I need some help.
I've made a program and it works fine on my computer, but multiple users will be using program simultaneously, each one on his own computer conected over local network to mine computer (database is on my computer in shared folder).
When I try to access data on database (path is path of shared folder) i'm getting error 5013 (no database). The problem occurs only when I'm trying to read something from MS access database but not if I try to read data from .txt file, then it works fine...
I'm using ADO Tools
Can someone help me, I would be very greatful?
Solved!
Go to Solution. Thanks to you Dennis I've managed to figure it out.
I'll explain this for future generations
1) I've created DSN. To do that open ODBC Data Source Administrator:
- for 64 bit app C:\Windows\System32\odbcad32.exe
- for 32 bit app C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
In System DSN tab click Add.. then choose Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) (If you do not have this on list download that drivers from web) --> FINISH.
Enter Data Source Name (mine is Test2) --> Select... --> now because the MS Access database is on shared folder on remote PC go to Network... --> Browse... and select that shared folder --> Finish. Now you'll see all .mdb files on that folder and you choose your database --> OK --> OK --> OK
2) Now in block diagram you connect string "DSN=your_dsn_name;" (mine was Test2) to ConnectionString connector of ADO Connection Open.vi
It worked for me.
