Error vss writers exchange 2010 windows backup

I have this error, when running windows backup on server with exchange 2010:
Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
   Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
   Writer Instance Id: {400de426-a419-459f-a953-91026051bf91}
   State: [8] Failed
   Last error: Retryable error
I've rebooted the server several times, but without success.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thank you
Cristiano Ianiri

Hi,
Do you have any running AV software? If there is, please set the AV Exclusion on database file or disable AV temporarily.
From the description, you have restarted server several times. It didn't work. To narrow down the issue, could you please restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service again on the server where you did backup at your convenience?
After that, please run the VSSadmin list writers command to determine whether the writer state returns to a stable state.
Besides, please check the database that you want to backup to see if it is in healthy state. You can use the get-mailboxdatabasecopystatus cmdlet to check this.
If you have checked steps above, please increase the diagnostic logging level for the Exchange Writer and check if there is any clues.
Best regards,
Belinda

  • Exchange 2010 DAG backup & Transaction logs

    Hi,
What is Microsoft recommended best practise for Exchange DAG group backup in an environment where there are Active & multiple (2-3) passive copies of the databases?
Is it a good practice to backup transaction logs as frequently as possible in addition to daily full backup ? This I belive will allow to restore the DB to the latest possible state
using last good full backup & transaction logs (Like restoring SQL databases)
    Thanks

    Hi,
Windows Server Backup can't backup passive copy. If you want to backup both active and passive copies, you need to use DPM or other third party.

  • Exchange 2013 Window Backup failure - fails to clean up log files - error FFFFFFFC

    Hello,
We currently have an Exchange 2013 - Exchange 2007 coexistence setup.
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2007 CAS/HUB
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2007 MBX
    1x Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 CU 3 (all roles)
Since our current backup solution (Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3) does not support backing up Exchange 2013 CU3 databases, we are using the builtin Windows Backup feature to backup the Exchange 2013 CU3 databases.
This has functioned for a while, until all of a sudden, the log files are not cleared anymore, causing our log disk to fill up.
Our Exchange 2013 server looks like this:
    C: Windows + Exchange installation
    D: Databases
    E: Database Log Files
    F: Archive Databases
    G: Archive Database Log Files
    S: Dedicated backup volume
The backup is scheduled to run every day at 21:00 hours, performing a full VSS backup of D:,E:,F: and G: to the volume S:
Windows backup log says the backup completed with exceptions, leaving the Exchange logs untouched and filling the drive.
The Windows Backup Command Line tools are NOT installed since they are not compatible with Exchange 2013.
In the eventvwr we can see the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS Writer (Instance a33ec440-7f12-4c50-806b-1bc5ceaf8aad) failed with error FFFFFFFC when processing the backup completion event.
The command VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS displays the following:
    Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
       Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
       Writer Instance Id: {cf84a907-76dc-428c-90e0-c18a3f9db493}
       State: [1] Stable
       Last error: Retryable error
Restarting the Microsoft Exchange Replication (MSExchangeRepl) clears the writer error, same with a reboot, however the error comes backup after the next backup.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks.

  • Error in moving exchange 2010 mailboxes to Exchange 2013 SP1 during migration

    Dear All,
We were running Exchange 2010 SP3 with MBX/HT/CAS role in single server. Now we are migrating our exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 SP1. After configuring co-existence and during the mailbox move from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 SP1, we are facing below

  • Migrating Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010; initial backup slow...

Just migrated about 300 Exchange 2007 mailboxes to Exchange 2010 database.  Temporarily using Windows Server Backup for Server 2008 R2 to backup the databases to a remote storage.  Initial full backup of the database is taking longer than 24 hours
for a 235 GB database and what is now 334,000 log files...as a result of the migration.  Seems like a long time.
I tested network connectivity to and from the SAN, and the Exchange server and there are no server or disk I/O issues.  Server is running 16 cores and 48 GB RAM.  Is this normal for it to take this long to run through the consistency checks and
backups for this amount of data?

    Hi,
DPM 2012 R2 requires at least .NET Framework 4.0 and .NET Framework 4.0 works with Exchange 2010 SP3.

  • Error upgrading form exchange 2010 to exchange 2013

    Hello,
I have Exchange 2010 sp3 running on win server 2012 R2 sp1 standanrd. I would like to upgrade to exchange 2013 and I read that installation of exchange 2013 is coexistent with exchange 2010 already installed. But When I try to install exchange 2013 I keep
getting this error :"Exchange server is in an inconsistent state. Only disaster recovery mode is available. Please use Setup /m:RecoverServer to recover this Exchange server." But after closing set up the server is still running
    fine.

    Hi,
Based on my research, the issue can occur when the Exchange server object already exists within Active Directory.
Thus, I’d like to confirm the following information:
    1. Does your new Exchange 2013 server have the same server name with the previous one?
    2. Have you change your Exchange 2010 server name to legacy.domain.com?

  • Exchange 2010 server backup.

What is the best practise to take the Exchange server 2010 servers.
We have 4 servers in DAG with 1 active and 3 passive copies.  We are currently taking Full backup in the weekend and differential backup daily. We use HP Data Protector for taking backup. Current DB size is 450GB.
What is the prefered method of backup (Differential or Incremental).
If we take incremental backup will it purge logs from all the exchange servers in DAG.

    Hi,
Yes, Incremental backup will truncate the transaction log files. Here is an related blog below, please refer to the "DPM 2010 (beta) or every other 3rd party" section.

    Hi Frank,
I've the same problem when I try to install the SP2.

  • Exchange 2010 - The certificate status could not be determined because the revocation check failed.

I have tried everything I have found online to get my DigiCert to work.
I have exported the cert and imported it into my child domains and they look perfect.
It is just my parent domain having issues.
    netsh winhttp show proxy
does show my correct proxy server for http and https and port 8080
I have tried name, FQDN and IP address.
In the Bypass-list I have tried none, *.domain.com, and a list of all domains and child domains in my forest.
    I have flushed the cache
    certutil -urlcache crl delete
    certutil -urlcache ocsp delete
and rebooted the Exchange 2010 (Windows 2008 R2) server
No matter what, I still see in my Server Configuration for the parent domain's DigiCert cert the message
The certificate status could not be determined because the revocation check failed.
with a red X on the left hand icon.  Again, Child domains all say "The certificate is valid for Exchange Server usage."
Note: In spite of having the red X, I was able to assign via EMS the services.
Webmail works fine.  Outlook Anywhere fails... I suspect it is due to my red X problem.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks in Advance
    Jim.
    Jim.

I have contacted DigiCert and they said the cert is working per their utility, hence the problem is outside the scope of their support.
I have followed, several times, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979694
    http://www.digicert.com/help/  reports all is well.
The DigiCertUtil.exe reports all is well and happy.
    I have run
netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http=myproxy:8080;https=myproxy:8080" bypass-list="*.mydomain.com"
    Current WinHTTP proxy settings:
        Proxy Server(s) :  http=myproxy:8080;https=myproxy:8080
        Bypass List     :  *.mydomain.com
I have flushed the cache using the commands
    certutil -urlcache crl delete
    certutil -urlcache ocsp delete
I still see in my Server Configuration for the parent domain's DigiCert cert the message
"The certificate status could not be determined because the revocation check failed."
with a red X on the left hand certificate icon.
To verify the cert via command line:
    certutil -verify -urlfetch c:\mail_domain_com.cer
LoadCert(Cert) returned ASN1 bad tag value met. 0x8009310b (ASN: 267)
CertUtil: -verify command FAILED: 0x8009310b (ASN: 267)
CertUtil: ASN1 bad tag value met.
I suspect this is why I cannot get Outlook Anywhere to connect.
Child domains show a happy certificate icon. Parent domain does not.
    Still scratching my head.
    Thanks all!
    Jim.

  • Exchange 2010 Mailbox Recipient List changing

I’m running up against a brick wall.
This is the Exchange 2010 server (non SBS, running on W2012 Std physical, not Hyper-V). Customer did their own migration from Exchange 2003 several months ago, but were never able to complete decommissioning their old Exchange 2003 server, which I did.
I ran through cleanup on the new Exchange 2010 (Windows 2012) server. Their primary A/D is another Windows 2003 server, and did cleanup of DNS, etc.
They've been having a problem with a specific user (Debra) even before I decommissioned the old Exchange. Email on her new Win 8.1 system is flaky -- sometimes it works, sometimes it sort of works and sometimes it doesn’t work at all – meaning
that sometimes she gets mail in/out and other times she can send out mail, but people will get NDRs trying to send her email, and other times Outlook 2013 just says “disconnected”. Saying that, they have other users on Win 8.1 with no issues at all.
So, yesterday we created a whole new, different user name (Debra1) -- different email address, different display name, and deleted her old account (Debra) from both Exchange and AD. That didn't help. It worked for a while, and then stopped working.
Today, we reloaded her machine from scratch. The customer’s IT person on site just called me to report that not only are things still not working, but get this: if he goes to EMC, he does NOT see the new user account (Debra1) we created yesterday
for Debra, but the old one (Debra) which we deleted is appearing, And, another user (Anna) that we deleted yesterday is showing up in EMC.
But Active Directory on the win 2003 server shows the new Debra1 account, and the old Debra and Anna accounts do NOT appear.
What am I missing? What could be causing Exchange to reload mailbox users??
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kevin,
From your description, I recommend you run the Get-Mailbox cmdlet and check if user Debra1 is in the list.
What's more, you can click Actions -> Refresh on right side of EMC to update users.
Besides, if a user cannot send or receive emails using Outlook , I recommend you check if OWA has the same issue at first.
    Hope my clarification is helpful.
If there are any problems, please feel free to let me know.

  • MS Exchange 2010 Sp3 Ent Migration to Exchange 2013

    Hello,
We currently have 2 Exchange 2010 SP3 servers in 1 DAG. Both servers host CAS, Mailbox and Hub Role.
I want to introduce a 3rd Exchange 2013 Server and slowly move users onto a new DAG I build in Exchange 2013.
Can I create a 3rd Exchange 2013 Server with CAS and Mailbox Server Role and make the 3rd Exchange server (2013) a member of the existing (2010) CAS array then slowly perform local move requests for users mailboxes
from my Exchange 2010 DAG to the Exchange 2013 DAG without any disruption to my outlook, OWA and AS clients?
    Exchange 2010 (Windows 2008 R2)
    Exchange 2013 (Windows 2012 R2 DataCenter)

    Hi,
In Exchange 2013, all Outlook connectivity (Internal and External) takes place over Outlook Anywhere(RPC/HTTP). Thus, CAS array which is used internal for RPC/TCP protocol (MAPI) no longer exists in Exchange 2013.
For your coexistence environment and the plan to migrate all mailboxes to Exchange 2013 in the future,
we need to set all virtual directories for CAS 2013 and enable Outlook Anywhere for Exchange 2010. If the mailbox is moved to Exchange 2013, the Outlook client would connect to the server which is set in Outlook Anywhere External host name
and Internal host name instead of CAS array. If all configurations are proper, CAS 2013 would also proxy the service requests for Exchange 2010 users.

  • Uninstall/Reinstall Exchange 2010 in coexisting Exchange 2003

    Hi,
Can we uninstall Exchange 2010 without any affect to Exchange 2003 in the co-existing environment?  I installed Exchange 2010 in existing Exchange 2003 and tried to configure for both Exchange exist in our domain.   Somehow the Exchange 2010 crashed
and now it cannot start, only stuck in Initializing process.  I want to uninstall and then reinstall but I don't know if doing this will cause any problem to the Existing Exchange 2003.  Could someone tell me?
    Thanks,
    Jim

You don't have to uninstall and reinstall server, just rebuild base server with OS with what it had earlier and recover Exchange 2010 with /m:recoverserver switch.
    Recover an Exchange Server
I assume you still have Exchange 2010 database backup or original files for restore if needed and this is just OS crash and can not be repaired scenario
