Error when erasing a partition on a drive

First of all, I transferred a hard drive from a damaged Maxtor II External due to a container issue to my G4 Silver and it worked fine. I had it partition to a bootable backup and an extra storage drive. Using SuperDuper back up software, I mistakenly filled up the external drive with data. So, I went to disk utility to do a zero out erase. The troubles began. The external is failing to mount and my G4 won't shut down. I can unmount the Maxtor Bootable Backup and it will shut down, or I just do a powerdown with the on/off button. Here's what Disk Utility tells me: First Aid failed//Disk Utility stopped repairing "disk Os5" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Also from the Disk Utility screen it show the Maxtor Bootable drive, but the other partition is re-named to "diskOs5" and grayed out. In the report screen it says "Invalid B-tree nod size/Volume check failed. Lots of information, hope this leads to a suggestion.
Steve

Diskwarrior may be able to repair the invalid b-tree error. If not, or if you can't afford it, then you'll want to re-partition/format the hard drive which will erase all information on the disk.

  • Input / Output Error when creating GUID Partition on External Drives

I've been trying to setup an install of OS X on an external device and therefore need to partition them to the GUID Partition Scheme.
I've tried it with my iPod and an External Hard Disk Drive and no matter what I do, I get the error:

You'll have to select the entire external hard drive by the hardware name itself and then apply a new partition table to it under the Partition tab of Disk Utility. Erase and format the drive.

  • Disk utility error when erasing an external hard drive

    Hi,
Not sure if this is the most appropriate fourm list to post this but I thought I'd give it a try.
I am running snow leopard on my MBP and am trying to use disk utility to erase and format an ext. HD.  While the disk icon does not show up on the desktop when I connect it to my mac, Disk utility does show the ext. hd in the left column, but no matter what format I try, even just using one partition and selecting zero out all data, I get the following error: "disk erase failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory".
Is the hd dead?  Are there other options?  I do have disk warrior, version 4.1.1 and it does not regonize the ext. hd.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did select the ext hd as the one I wanted to erase (my internal hd is my start up drive). After I selected the ext hd, (there is no volume listed under it so the only thing I can select is the hd itself). that is when I selected erase and then Mac journaled, then named the hd and then after selecting erase, I got the error. Also as a matter of note, if I select firstaid, both the repair and verify permissions are dimmed, so I can't even try to repair the disk. That is when I tried disk warrior hoping that could examine the hd, but since it is not mounted on the d/t, it doesn't show as a drive to check. I don't understand why the ext hd shows up in disk utility, but not the d/t. Also of note is the fact that when I connect that ext had to my Mac with a fw cable, a window opens saying that the drive is not readable and do I want to initialize it or ignore. I choose to initialize and that is when I get the error. Also of note is that I have tried both security options of "don't erase data" and "zero out data" and still get the same error.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.

  • Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

    MacPro 1,1 Quadcore 3 GHz (2006 "Woodcrest")
    32 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    OS X 10.7.5 Lion
I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
    Best regards.
    1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
    2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
    3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
    5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
    7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
    8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
    9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
    10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
    11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
    12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
    13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
    14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Error when trying to partition for Bootcamp

    Evening everyone,
I use parallels at the moment but have a piece of software which isn't quite behaving itself. As I have just upgraded to leopard, I thought I would see if setting up Bootcamp and running it in there would solve the problem. I freed up plenty of disk space but when trying to create a 10GB partition in the setup assistant I got this error:
'The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.'
I don't know much about the technical side of my computer - partitioning and formatting etc so that message sounds all very scary to me. Is it saying I need to wipe my hard drive and re-format it? It is already formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If so, can I do that from my Time Machine backups? it sounds like a really drastic action. Also, could this be anything to do with my current Parallels software?
Thanks very much for your time, any help would be much appreciated!

when you say "plenty of disk space" how much exactly is that?
that message indicates that bootcamp assistant couldn't find big enough chunk of contiguous free space to create a bootcamp partition. this happens due to disk fragmentation.
at the minimum you should boot from the leopard install DVD and repair the hard drive (repair disk, not permissions).
If you still want to install bootcamp you need to defrag your hard drive. there are several ways to do it. you can use 3rd party software like idefrag. You can clone your disk to an external drive using a 3rd party cloner like CCCloner or Superduper. then boot from the clone and clone it back to the main drive. Or, if you have time machine, you can restore your system from a TM backup. that will also defrag your hard drive. To do that boot from the install DVD and select 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. that seems to be the suggestion the message you saw makes.
also, keep in mind that you need to keep plenty of free space (>15%) on your OS X partition to avoid disk fragmentation problems.

  • Unsatisfied Link Error when using Oracle OCI (Type II) driver

Using Oracle OCI (Type II) driver on HPUX with Oracle 9.2.0.4.
If when creating a connection pool via the console, using the Oracle OCI (Type
II) driver, you get the error "Unsatisfied link error with library libocijdbc9.sl
or format error" then check that the library included in the SHLIB_PATH is pointing
at the $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 directory and not just the $ORACL_HOME/lib

We do not offer a JDBC driver for Linux in version 5.1. In version 6.0,we
do offer a type 4 driver for Linux.
In version 5.1, I suggest trying the platform independent type 4 JDBC driver
available for free from Oracle. It is supported (as is any JDBC driver)
with WebLogic Server. To download it:
Go to http://www.oracle.com and select the "Download" option.
From the resulting page, use the "Select Utility or Driver" dropdown to
    select Oracle JDBC drivers
From the resulting page, scroll down a little (since SQLJ stuff appears at
    the top).
    Or, to go directly there:

    1. Installed BC/WinXP.
    2. Removed WinXP by reclaiming entire volume for use by OSX using BC.
    3. Tried to re-partition the drive using BC.
I fixed this by booting from the OSX startup disc and running the disc utility and had it repair the disc. Apparently step 2 above left the disc with some sort of errors on it. I originally partitioned the disc using BC 1.2b. I later updated to BC 1.3b (which is what I tried the repartition with).

  • "RAID is not supported" error when trying to install on separate drive

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) with a RAID0 of two 500GB disks as my main drive.
Up until recently I had a separate physical drive for boot camp running XP.
Now, I have replaced that drive with a newer one and wish to install Win7 Ultimate on it, but when trying to run Boot Camp Assistant I get the following message: "RAID is not supported".
Obviously it is referring to my main drive which upon it cannot install nor partition; but I do not intend that anyway - I merely want to install on the separate drive. Is there any way to get past this blockage?
    Thanks

One other question comes to mind:
Should the PC drive be formatted using MBR or GUID?
I seem to have some startup issues after installing Win7, and I thought it might be related (the drive is NTFS with a GUID)
    Thanks

  • Can't erase  one partition on my drive

I am trying to erase my hard drive. It is partitioned. I could not get rid of the partitions. I have erased and reinstalled system software on both partitions but no I can't access the larger partition as my startup drive. It does't show up.
    What do I do?

    TC & All:
Typically, all one has to do to reformat is to erase the entire drive (after backing up), as Tom Bryant advised in his post. (I offered the Partitioning method to filmlady as an alternative, because it sounds like she has a drive which has "stuck" partitions, and this sometimes helps to rectify the problem.)
Tom (Texas Mac Man) has given you some really good advice, IMO, regarding investing in a larger drive and using your current one for a bootable backup drive. If you shop around, you'll certainly find a deal online for an 80-120GB ATA drive, which will give you some working room. (Personally, I'd budget for two of them... one for a system/boot drive and the other to back up the system/boot drive, both installed internally. You'll be amazed at the flexibility this affords, relative to the restrictions you're facing now.)
Sales change virtually every week, so if you decide to go this route, keep on the lookout for a winner. I perused some sites just now, and provided some links below. There's a Hitachi 80GB drive for $30 and a Seagate 80GB for $40, for example. I'm not a fan of Hitachi's, but the price is right. Both of these drives have 2MB buffers, on the downside. An 8MB buffer would give you a "faster" drive and more bang for the buck. Next week you might find a 120GB drive with an 8MB buffer for $40...
    Hitachi
    Seagate
    Western Digital
    Maxtor
There are software solutions to repartitioning without having to erase the drive, but they cost money which could be better spent on an additional drive. Moreover, I sure wouldn't recommend using one of these programs without having a backup, so I don't see that they're very useful. I have the Drive Genius utility software which has this option, but am leery of using it, even with complete backups of my drives.
You could also backup your volumes to disks, erase the drive, and restore it. You might also have a friend willing to loan you a drive to do the backup/cloning. You might be surprised at how many relatively small drives there are floating around, mostly scrounged from old PCs.

  • "You must restart your system" error when installing Tiger on a new drive

While trying to install Mac OS 10.4 from the install DVD the install stops during the "Basic Install ..." phase and I get a gray screen that says "You must restart the system by pressing the power button ....." shown four different languages. I restart installation over and over, it never gets past that first section. Gray screen, panic stop.
I installed a new 200 GB Maxtor DiamondMax Ultra ATA/100 hard drive in my system. The system already had a 120 GB Maxtor. The 200GB is configured as the master and the 120GB as the slave. I have a new SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel PCI Interface (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/SIIG/SCMP4A12/) also installed.
    Here's my configuration.
Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics) 1GB RAM, Mac OS 10.4.8
    - SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel PCI Interface
    - IOGEAR Hi-Speed USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 (1394A) Combo PCI Card
    - MAXTOR STM3200820A (200 GB drive, master)
    - MAXTOR 6B120P0 (120 GB drive, slave)
I tried disconnecting the 120GB hard drive, leaving just the 200 GB on the bus and I get the same gray screen a few seconds into the basic OS install. Tried removing the IOGEAR USB 2.0 card, same message. Since Mac OS X was originally installed on the 120GB, I can restart Mac OS 10.4.8 from that drive and use that drive. Once restarted on the 120GB drive I see the 200 GB drive, Disk utilities see it just fine, drive reports no error in the Disk Utility. The 200 GB disk even formats, I see it on my current MAC OS 10.4.8 as the second drive. I just want to get Mac OS installed on the 200 GB.
If you have seen this gray screen before installing on a 200 GB Maxtor or have any insight I would be most appreciated.
PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics) Mac OS X (10.4.8) SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel controller, 200GB Maxtor

    Hi Frank,
With all that additional third party hardware it will be difficult to get a proper installation. You can either take out ALL 3rd-party hardware (just leave the 200 GB hard disk in there, but also take out the 120 GB) or you can simply clone the system from the 120 GB disk to the 200 GB disk. You can do that with utilities such as Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Regaining lost space after error when removing Bootcamp partition?

I am running snow leopard 10.8.2 and had a bootcamp partition of 115gb for Windows 7. Recently I tried to remove the partition using the bootcamp assistant and it displayed an error message that it was unable to remove the partition, however the icon for the partition disappeared in finder and the startup disk menu. I tried to remove the partition again in the same way and this time the error message did not come up, but the utility froze while it was removing the partition and after waiting for an hour or so I had to force quit the utility and restart my Mac. The bootcamp partition doesn't show up, but I did not get the 115gb back? Any ideas how I can reclaim it? Any help is much appreciated!

Notice the 76GB Free Space in the diskutil cs list output.
Unless Kappy has alternative suggestion, I suggest the following (the last 'b' is bytes).
    diskutil cs resizeVolume <UseTheLongStringUUIDAboveTheMacintoshHDLine = DB68...> <UseTheSizeInBytesUnderTheLogicalVolumeGroupEntry = 250140434432b>
    diskutil cs resizeVolume
    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume
            lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode size
Resize a logical volume, which is one of one or more disks that consume storage
out of a logical volume group. The logical volume group will have more or less
available space after this operation, if it was a shrink or grow, respectively.
    Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume
             11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g

  • Demoshield error when installing SB audio 4 cd driv

After clicking next on the creative software setup welcome screen for installation, it gives me a microsoft error that DemoShield Player has enoucrtered a problem and needs to close. What is wrong? Please someone help! the audio card is brand new!

    demoshield is different than installshield.
You've got something disrupting the demo shield.
When you installs drivers installation, don't forget to shut down internet and network connections, and every unnecessary background running programs (antivirus too).
