  • DVD Burn problem. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use"

    Hello everyone,
I initially had a lot of problems with PE8. However the nVidia driver update solved most of them.
Just thought it was important to report success as well as failure!
However one problem remains. I get the following error at the 96% mark while burning. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use". It is always at the 96% mark and the program is "compiling [something]" when this happens.
Having searched this site I notice that user rgferg posted a similar problem 13 days ago but was redirected to repost in a different place, but never did.
I have tried to burn a 1hr clip 4 times and every time I have selected the slower burn speed (8MB/s) as has been suggested. It seems that inferior media is a culprit, so I have bought some [quality] Verbatim DVD-R media to try in my Phillips SATA optical drive. I am sceptical this will work, but open minded nonetheless. I will give it a whirl when my computer has stopped capturing the VHS I am working on.
Each time the burn failed the disk was automatically ejected and the burn process had actually started and progressed perhaps ~40% or so.
This indicates to me that it is a drive sharing issue, rather than a media issue. Somewhere on this forum it suggests that I go through a 20+ step process and delete/disable every piece of software that can compete with Premiere among other things. IF I do this what do I burn with outside of Adobe? Do I have to get imgburn or whatever it was called? What if I like Nero? Nero 6 has worked great for me for 3 years.
So given I am willing to uninstall my old optical drive burning software, who out there can recommened commercial software that for them creates a painless Adobe burning experience with no errors or conflicts? Perhaps there is another solution that I did not see on this forum?
I am running Windows XP SP3. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my SLI GeForce 7600 GS cards. I have 3 monitors. RAID 0 SATA, 2GB RAM, Athlon X2 5400.
    Justin.

OK been working through the list of 20 things Adobe recommends to fix DVD burn error. No luck yet:
    system meets minimum requirements
Project size does not exceed disk capacity
successfully burned project to DVD folder -thus skip to step 8.
      8.   Using new blank media for burning
      9.   Try different media and DVD burners. Bought Verbatim DVD-R. Don't have another DVD burner. Adobe's supported burner list is VERY short, so of course mine is not on it.
      10.  Uninstalled Nero 6. Did NOT uninstall Acronis True Image workstation or Lightscribe. These do not access the drive unless I say so!
      11.  Have not yet disabled startup items and services. This will take a lot of work and will leave to last. Deactivated Spybot thus far.....
      12.  Disabled IMAPI CD burning COM
      13.  DMA if available already set. Haven't set this in BIOS yet. I already think it is, but will check next boot.
      14.  Updated DVD firmware
      15.  Already updated nVidia drivers
      16.  Don't have any other DVD drives to disconnect.
      17.  MPEG workaround. Will resort to if required.
      18.  Disable Autoplay? XP only has "prompt me each time to choose an action". I have set this for ALL file types.
      19.  Have NOT refreshed the DVD drivers in the registry. This step involves uninstalling PE8. Will leave this as last resort.
      20.  Visit forums to see if other have the same problem. Hi guys
So still working through some of the items above.
Can anyone direct me to advice on how to write the encoded files sent to the hard drive, or the VOB files that PE8 failed to burn to a disk? Will the former work with DVD menus?
    What a process.
    Stay tuned.
    Justin.

  • Device error -the target device isn't suitable for use. Solution found!?

    Hello everyone,
I have received the following error many times on my machine for different projects when trying to burn to disk and folders:
Device error -the target device isn't suitable for use.
I have multiple hard drives with ~60GB, 40GB and 12GB. I have tried to burn 4.7GB discs and folders and 8.5GB folders.
I have previously tried nearly ALL 20 troubleshooting items recommended by Adobe and have even changed to Verbatim media. None of these solved the problem.
What did solve the problem, EVERY SINGLE TIME, was freeing up hard drive space or reducing the length of the project.
You may look at the available hard drive space and THINK that you have enough. But you don't.
Perhaps the remainder of this thread could be used to discuss the disk space requirements for projects. I can't seem to crack the formula. I just keep deleting/archiving files until the project works. I have ordered some new big HDD's to be rid of this error forever.
    Justin.

While it is certainly possible that diskspace is one factor in getting the dreaded "target device isn't suitable message" (usually after lenghthy processing), it does not appear to be the only one.
I got the message trying to burn a 3 minute video to a dvd on two seperate computers one running xp pro with 150Gb of spare disk space and one running W7 HP with 50Gb of spare space. Tryng to burn to a folder gave the same error.
To me, this pointed to something in the app, or the project, so firstly I deleted the disk menu...burn completed ok. Re-instated a menu (different one)....burn failed. Removed one scene marker and the stop marker......burn completed ok. Re-instated stop marker......burn failed
Am I missing something on the purpose of the stop marker?
There was nothing obviously wrong with the project, although I will admit that I am new to PRE but am not a complete novice to video editing.
The encoding process of the menu's (both passes) went ok, and it wasn't until it got to the "encoding media" phase that the error message appeared.
It would certainly seem that more illuminating error reporting would be beneficial in this case, but it would also seem to be worth trying changes to the menus or markers to see if that fixes the error message.

  • Device Error-The Target Device Isn't Suitable For Use

I read this in another forum after I experience this problem. Hope it helps some of you. I encountered the problem when I was exporting my finished movie. I had added a few effects like transitions and menu makers as well as stop markers to my timeline. When I went to Share, Create Disc and was exporting to a folder on my drive so I can preview the movie before I actually burn it to a Disc. During encoding well after 50% it stopped and said "DEVICE ERROR-THE TARGET DEVICE ISN'T SUITABLE FOR USE". I tried a few things that were normal when trying to export.
    1. Restarting.
    2. Created a new folder.
    3. A different drive.
    4. A DVD-RW.
Nothing was working, so I turned to Adobe forums and others like it. I found that Stop Markers can cause problems as well as some menu markers. It advised to delete the markers and try exporting again. Sure enough it worked, it exported with no problem. But I didn't like that after watching to video and reaching the end it would go to the next chapter without going back to the menu like most DVD videos do after playing. So I restarted Premiere and added all my Stop Markers to the timeline and began to export the movie and it worked just fine. I'm guessing that it just needed to be deleted and added again later after doing a restart so the computer has a fresh cache. Restarting computer works well after 1 hour of editing.

Erwin - thank you for the tip.  I have had the same problem and tried several builds as you have taking aroound 2.5
hours per build.  Removing the Stop marker has enabled me to write to a directory, Still have an error with regard to the menu not automatically shoiwng.  However, as I write, burning direct to a DVD to remove any copying problems..
Again, many thanks for your help.

  • Unknown Error While Burning DVD

I've had hit and miss issues burning DVDs from the timeline in PP CS2 in the past, usually resolved. This time, a consistant unknown error has come up at the same point in the burn process regardless of the project, duration or file type.
Since I will eventually install CS5 after my current project is complete, it isn't critical that I find a solution. I only use this feature to make test DVDs, but I am curios as to why this may be happening at the same point no matter what footage or project file I use. One thing I know, it isn't about basic system capabilities since I was able to burn projects, come back later (days or weeks later) without changing anything and not be able to burn the same project. This may be about cache, something taking up RAM or scratch disk size. Screen savers and all extra stuff have been turned off.
    Win XP-Pro

If CS3 gives you the option, write an ISO file, or DVD folder, and use Imgburn to do the actual disc writing

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim Two layer Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable Two layer

  • M30-842: Power Calibration error while burning DVD-RW

I have faced a problem with my M30-842. Several times I have tried to erase burned on my laptop DVD-RW and Nero would say "Burn process failed. Power calibration error". So I cannot erase or continue multisession DVD-RWs.
    Burning CDs is ok.
Please help me with the problem, how can I solve it? SOS!
    Semen

    Hi Semen
Can you please try to use roxio software built into Windows XP? There is also the same option. It will be interesting to know if this problem is caused by software that you use or if there is some malfunction of your device.

  • "device error - the target device isn't suitable for use with this device subclass"

Am using Encore 2.0 with XP with an HPDVD840e. It's been working fine for months now suddenly, even though Encore lists it as a burner, I get this error message when I click on burn. Only once yesterday did it start transcoding. have read similar problem answers: have tried disabling and enabling burner, disabling Norton Antivirus (couldn't find packet writing option on XP). Can you help?

What other burning software do you have installed?
What updates have been done lately?
    i something
must have changed, and an automatic update of some description is most likely the culprit. I have been told some horror stories lately from our fruit-loving friends about the updating to Toast and/or Jam, where the updates are gradually removing more & more functionality in the name of DRM.
Packet writing can be found in 2 places on a PC.
1 - Open up "My Computer". Right-click your burner, and select "Properties". In the "Recording" tab, make certain the box "Allow CD recording" is unticked.
2 - If you have Nero, Roxio or Adaptec recording software installed, uninstall InCD, DirectToDisc or whatever the packet writing utility is called.

  • PSE8/PRE8 device error when burning DVD

When trying to burn a DVD using PSE8 and PRE8 in Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and now in Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, PRE8 stops at 96% burn and gives me "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use."  The DVD will run on the computer and the slideshow stops just short of the end.  The DVD will not run on DVD player/TV.  I had no such problems using PSE6/PRE4 on Vista setup.  Suggestions?

  • Errors while burning?

I just put together a pretty simple, one-track video on iDVD and while it was burning, I got a message saying something like "errors while burning" - I did not save the exact message, but I'm wondering what the cause for this might be. I actually closed out of the DVD project, took it to the trash, and recreated a new DVD project out of the iMovie project. I thught this would fix the problem, but there were still errors while burning the second time. I tried to play the DVD and the system would not read the DVD, there was no picture at all. Any suggestions? (I have more then 25GB of free space on my hard drive - about 35 I believe)

    You're welcome. Here's a bit of background:
    a) I use MacJanitor to trigger the Mac's maintenance scripts (download it from VersionTracker.com), and then use Apple's Disk Utility (look in Applications-Utilities) to repair permissions on your main hard drive. Your Mac would do maintenance tasks by itself if it was turned on continuously, but MacJanitor lets you run daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks (I run it before I do something big, or when my Mac seems slow or goofy). Disk Utility can do first aid on hard disks, and on your main hard drive (boot drive), it can Repair Permissions (It's important that permissions are correct).
    b) Creating an image file is often recommended in these forums because it gives you more control over the burning process, and it creates a virtual DVD that reliably can be tested. In iDVD, choose Save As Disc Image and iDVD will go through the encoding and other processes, except the DVD is created on your Desktop. You can use Apple's DVD Player to play the virtual DVD and make sure it works like you want. When you're satisfied, Disk Utility can be used to copy the virtual DVD to an actual disk. To do this, choose the image file in DU and click Burn (you'll have some options for burn speed -- I'd choose something slow to reduce burning errors -- perhaps 1x or 2x but wouldn't go faster than half the rated speed of the burner).
    Shout if you need clarification.

I signed up for my apple account while living in Canada, and now I lives in the US. I am looking for a specific app that apparently is only available through the US app store. How can I change my account to the US Apple Store?

As long as you have a form of payment (credit or debit card) with a USA source, and with a billing address in the USA, then you just need to change your payment information on your account to that, change your country in the store settings, and you will then be able to shop in the USA store.
Your AppleID will work in any country's store, as long as your payment source and billing addres are also specific to that country (and you are in that country as well, as there may be IP filters in place to stop use outside of the country).

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Unknown error 2130906112 while burning DVD in Premiere Elements

Hi am trying to burn a DVD using Premiere Elements 3.0. My computer will go through the lengthy process of attempting to burn the CD. At the very end, the drive pops the DVD out and I get a message that states: Unknown error 2130906112. I have burned successfully in the past, but am unable to now. I have tried to do this about 7 times with this specific project and have had no success. I have used two different types of DVD+R (Memorex and Verbatim). My project is approximately 56 minutes long. Any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

    Great news!
I just can't see which is highlighted while doing so. I think it has to do with the template I chose in Premiere Elements while designing the movie.
The lack of the Sub-picture Highlights (the official name for the indicators of which Button one has navigated to), could be caused by several things:
1.) the inability of the PS3 to adequately display them. Like I said earlier, most people, that I know, use the PS3's for BD playing. The specs. are different for those, as opposed to the DVD-specs. I just do not know about the PS3.
2.) could be a problem with the Template. Which one did you choose? I'll be glad to check it out (if PrE4 has it) and report any issues that I find. Did you modify this Template, say in Photoshop/PSElements? Could be that one of those modifications turned ON all Sub-picture Highlights.
3.) could be a problem with the "authoring" phase of the Project. This is after the editing, and is where one assembles the Assets (Menus, etc.) and does the navigation. As PrE is semi-automatic, it does most of this for the user, with little intervention. Still, there could be ways to accidently mess something up here, though it's highly unlikely. Now, in my authoring program, all is done by hand, so I have hundreds of opportunities to make a mess of a Project - PrE shields the user from most of these.
    Now, to your questions:
Can I use the Img software for all burning projects including CDs?
Yes. You can do most forms of burning, including CD's (Audio, Video or Data), so long as you have the right types of files.
What is the best way to organize and store my video files?
This is the $64,000 question. So much depends on what one has, how they are likely to need to access them and what equipment they either own, or wish to purchase. I'll give you my scheme, though it might be overkill for you. Still, you can get an idea and are free to adapt any part of it for your needs.
I work with several types of Assets: original (or stock) still images, Captured (stock, or client-supplied) motion, Audio (original, stock or extracted from the previously mentioned motion Assets, Menus (Templates and original creations), Titles (same) and then my Projects.
I keep the originals on both a NAS (Networked Attached Storage) drive that is networked to all of my computers, and also on external storage HDD's. I also back up to DVD-Data discs. For Captured, original Video, I also store all tapes and do NOT overwrite/reuse any. I only work with Copies of any of the Assets (the Captures are probably the exception, as I have the tapes, should I need to re-Capture).
I use several media browsers to organize my Assets. I then locate those necessary for a Project, and create a folder structure for that Project. Copies of the Assets are placed in that folder structure, beneath the Project name. Again - these are Copies, in case something happens.
Depending on what I need to do, the Scratch Disks (set with Edit>Preferences) are usually kept within the Project's folder structure too. Same for Exports. As I use a different program to author DVD's (Adobe Encore), I create my Encore Project within this structure too. The files that I Export from PrPro (my NLE of choice), are the ones that I then Import into Encore for authoring the Project.
When done, I Archive the editing Project and also the Encore Project, to another external drive. I will always make one additional copy of my output DVD as a backup, as I can use ImgBurn, or another utility, to Copy DVD.
After all of this, I can then safely Delete my entire Project folder from the system. Remember, it contains no origianl Assets (other than Captured materail), as I have everything on the NAS, plus an external, plus the backup DVD-Data disc. Right now, I have about 30 1 - 2TB external HDD's that I use. Some are for backup, and some are to allow me to move my Projects between my laptop or my workstation.
Hope that this helps. As I said, it's probably overkill, but much of the work that I do is for clients. If they come back with a change, or a problem, I want to be able to help them immediately.
    Good luck and good questions,
    Hunt
