My friend has had this problem, it is not mine, but she asked me to look into it for her.
She was having troubles with her iPod Touch, such as when she was looking through the album view, it would stop playing the song that was currently playing and go back to the main menu screen. It would also stop playing a song just out of the blue. I suggested that she update the firmware, since she had not done so, so tonight she hooked up the device to her computer. It tried to update, but the iPod went black, and when she tried to restore it it gave her a message to the effect of "Cannot restore due to an error".
Is this just a bug, or is it more complicated than that? Can anyone help me and my friend?

You'll have to do a forced restore.
turn the iPod completely off.
and then hold down the home button while plugging in the USB cord *while still off* and then you will go through the mumbo jumbo of restoring and updating.

Connect it to iTunes and then put the device in DFU mode by holding the power button and home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button only while still holing the home button.
iTunes will prompt you to restore, try that and it should work.

It sometimes has the apple on the screen, or says it needs to be charged, or is all white, black, or yellow. I have tried charging it, leaving it alone for a while and turning it off and back on. Nothing has worked. What should I try to do??? Help please!!!

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Other uses have had same problem.

Cconnect it to your computer with the latest version of iTunes installed.

See if your Mac will boot from the install DVD.
Then uninstall Internet Cleanup.

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes? If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created.

Sammyhunter lets get you back in action! Has there been any physical/water damage to the device? Try pressing and holding the home and power button together. Once the Apple symbol appears release both buttons. Keep us posted!
