Error with CD Drive, "Disk containing no volumes"

I hope I'm in the right place. My Mac laptop is about 5 years old now.
Never had any problems with the Cd drive before.
Today I entered a blank cd to burn a playlist on iTunes. And an error message appeared:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore. (With Ignore and Eject buttons)
I've now tried different Cd's and music albums, and restarted my computer, the message now appears with all Cds.
Does mean it's probably an internal problem with the Cd drive?
Would I need a replacement?
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

tom: When you insert a blank disc, the message you're seeing is exactly right: by definition, a blank disc contains no volumes at all, so of course your Mac can't read it. After you burn it, the Mac should be able to read it.
However, if you're getting that message about all discs, including commercially pressed audio and data discs, then either your drive is dirty and needs cleaning or it's defective and needs to be replaced. If I were you, I'd remove the drive from the Powerbook, take its top cover off (4 screws) and blow it out thoroughly with canned compressed air, clean its lenses with a Q-Tip, put it back together and back in place, and test it again. If it still doesn't work then, replace it. New replacements can be had for under $70 that are far more capable than the original drive.
These instructions are for the DVI Tibooks, which are now 4.5 to 6 years old:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Ti-DVI/Optical-Drive-Removal/33/7/
The procedure is very similar for the earlier Tibook models.

The optical drive has probably failed. It's a fairly common thing with these slim SuperDrives. Does it read any discs you put into it? You can try resetting the SMC and pram but I'll be surprised if it helps.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My mackbook pro 13' A1278, has had multiple errors with the hard disk.

My mackbook pro 13' A1278, has had multiple errors with the hard disk. Now does not recognize the internal hard disk, but connect this HD using usb conector works fine.
    So it's a hardware problem.
    I'm really disappointe

    Pipfromvic,
have you tried installing Mavericks onto an external disk, and booting from the external disk using Startup Manager? If it runs well from an external disk, but continually crashes when running from the internal disk even after clean reïnstallations, then that could point to a faulty internal SATA cable as the culprit.

  • A communication error with disc drive

A communication error with disc drive and burn folder on macbook will not let me burn discs.  Is this a program error kind of thing or just parts problems?
    White Macbook using OS 10.6.8

There is a chance that the optical drive &/or its cable have failed
so a replacement, perhaps in the form of a third-party quality drive
may be in order. The Apple USB Superdrive does not directly work
with older computers that have internal optical drives; but there are
good ones by other makers, owners of older MacBook portables use.
    {There may also be a Console error message failure-related code.}
Or see about the ifixit guide to repair that model MacBook & a
replacement part from OWC, to survey efforts & costs to DIY.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hi to All,
From Dos window I run the command:
loadjava -user sys/pwd@name_db -resolve -synonym activation.jar

    Gaetano,
I see you took my advice when I replied to your Error with OCI8 driver installing sendmail/javamail.
However, it doesn't look like you studied the Oracle documentation for loadjava because the command you posted doesn't look right at all.
Please refer to the Java Developer's Guide for the correct syntax and usage of the loadjava command.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Disk contains no volumes that MacOSX can read

I wanted to swap my larger peripheral drive with an internal drive in my Lombard Powerbook. The smaller drive in the Powerbook worked fine as did the peripheral drive. When I put the smaller drive into the external drive case and firewired it to my iBook, I got the "Disk contains no readable volumes" message. DiskWarrior recognizes the external drive but won't do anything and Disk Utility isn't any help. Does the peripheral drive need to be "blessed"? Is there anyway of directly reading the drive using a Unix command?

    Hi So Cal,
Here's a discussion thread that is dealing with much the same issue as yours. Cornelius seems to be pretty switched on about this issue.

  • 0X4001100200001012 error with windows recovery disk

For quite some time (over a year), I've been seeing chat about this error when attempting to make recovery disks on Dell machines. Basically, a recovery disk made in windows 7 starts to boot, when tested, but then gets to what looks like the blue background
for a normal startup screen and shows an error code  0X4001100200001012 error.
Invariably, someone trots out advice about burning disks slower or running a file error check. Neither of these work. Some believe that the error has something to do with the Dell recover partition that all Dells ship with.
If one boots with the windows 7 install disk, all goes well, and one can recover an image file, so it is definitely some sort of error introduced at the windows 7 recover disk creation process.
I have seen this problem with 2, different model, Dells. An HP does not have the problem. Its recovery disks work fine. All three machines are running different versions of windows 7 64.
Do you have any insights into what is causing this error, and whether it can be remedies or if Dell owners just have to live with it? Calling Dell technical support is...well, lets just say that life is too short.

    Hi,
According to your description, it indicates you have a problem with your recovery disk. It may be caused by recover disk creation process.
You could refer to the similar thread; maybe they can give you some hits:

  • Cross Post::  Disk Utility Application - Errors with USB Drive

I have a 4200 2.5" 100GB Hard Drive in a "portable" configuration that I've used for some time. I had not plugged it into my MBP until today and it seemed to read the drive, but that's about it. I went to Disk Utility to do what I used to call in the PC world a "format" or "fdisk" to get all the stuff off of it and get it setup as a Backup drive for my MBP. Essentially, the drive is now kaput! Actually, what happens is, when I attempt any task in the Disk Utility app, it simply freezes up and no matter how long I wait (I've waited thirty minutes) nothing happens and I'm forced to "force end" to the app. Any ideas on this?
I am able to take the drive to my XP machine and reformat / repartion the drive, but it will not allow files to be copied over to it in the mac using the NTFS. This also seems odd to me. Any ideas on this one?
    Thanks,
    Bob

I posted a reply to that.
    Explanation:
I posted originally in the other forum because it is a USB drive issue. I cross posted because it is an Application issue. I probably should have just posted in one or the other!
    Thanks Jim,

  • Issues with Hard Drive & Disk Repair

I keep getting the following when I try to verify my hard drive with the Disk Utility:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
It won't let me go on to repair the disk and I can't find my Install/Restore disc anywhere. Is there a simple step-by-step way of fixing this?
    Many Thanks
    BH

    Ben
Something to try if you can't find your Install disc is a Safe Boot: see Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode and Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?. You should be aware that because of the disk checking, Safe Boot Takes Longer Than Normal Startup.
Safe Boot will run a full disk check, and re-run if it finds anything to repair. If it completes the booting process, it will have repaired your disk.
If your machine halts during Safe Boot, you have something seriously wrong with your disk: Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot.
If the latter happens, remember this quote from the Disk Utility screen:
    • If Disk Utility cannot make repairs, try other disk repair programs or back up your data and erase the volume. One popular Repair Program is DiskWarrior.

  • Trouble with Fantom drive / Disk Utility won't erase it

Until a few days ago, i had no problems with my Fantom 160 GB titanium drive. Then when i connected it to a freind's Mac, it started out OK fora few minutes, when my brother was playing around with creating an air network between the friend's computer, to which my fantom drive was attached, and my laptop. When i tried to activate the network, the Mac semi froze for a few minutes and just didn't do anything. when it started to move again, the fantom drive was showing 0 files in the finder window, and wouldn't eject.
So i turned it off and back on, which was probably a mistake; then the drive gave a message that it was unreadable.
Since i wouldn't lose too much data, i had no problem reinitializing the drive, but Disk Utility kept telling me that the erase failed.
When i try to verify the drive in Disk Utility, i get the error -9972: "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
This is the same text i get when i try to erase the drive, but without the error number.
I see at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302411 that this message this is bad, as Disk Utility cannot fix it.
Currently, the drive does not show up on the desktop, but it does show up in Disk Utilities. It stopped telling me the drive is unreadable.
    Is this drive beyond help?

    Dale,
that post is helpful, but I'm not sure how much it applies to me. My ibook shows no problems when not connected to the firewire drive, while the firewire drive started acting up when connected to another computer. i have also not been able to get the firewire drive to work on two other macs. The Fantom drive showed up as unreadable on all three, and Disk Utilities on all 3 computers failed to erase the firewire drive. By brother's had Disk Warrior & it wasn't able to do anything for the fantom drive, either.

What the mean the log ?
    How to solve ?
In fact, thank you very much.
    Jimmy

Disk not responding to selection generally indicates a hard drive error.
The fact that their showing up as transport errors indicates it could be scsi bus or or ide chain problems.
Could be cables, termination, controller. Or it could be the drive electronics.

I did not pick the Z drive for install.  I always pick the C drive if given the option.  But PE9 just went to work on its own and told me it could not install to the Z drive... there is a known issue posted here along these lines, however, so I think Adobe is on to it... of course i had to install as a trial version on a second machine to test the disk burning...then I have to solve the install problem, so I can install the license on the machine with the install problem.... all a big catch 22.  Here's the link on the install issue... I get the 1327 invalid drive error:

  • Write error with CD drive

    Hi!
I've been trying to burn a cd from itunes. I keep getting the error message - medium write error.
It burns part of the song list then ejects with this error.
Is this too many songs or something is wrong with the cd. I have tried several brands and none work.
    Thanks for your help.

    Thanks for your reply.
I haven't tried using Toast or Disk Utility but will do so.
I did make an appt. at the apple store to get it checked out. I went through several pages of the forum last night and saw this was an issue many people were having and did require the drive being replaced.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 for Mac Error With Display Driver

I keep receiving this error and then Photoshop crashes. Has anyone encountered this issue and if so how did you resolve it? I am using a Targus docking station and I had to download this driver: Driver Name: Video, Audio, and Ethernet Software for Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10, Mavericks 10.9, Mountain Lion 10.8/10.7 (R2.3) – January 2015
As long as this driver is installed on my mac pro, Photoshop continues to crash. If I uninstall the driver, Photoshop works fine.
    Error Message:
Photoshop CC 2014 for Mac has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarity disablesd enhancements which use the graphics hardware. Check the manufacturer’s website for the latest software. Graphics hardware enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.

You need to update your video driver from the website of the manufacturer of your video card.  You cannot rely on Windows Update or Microsoft, which typically have outdated drivers.

  • Error with new Room Template (containing KM Navigation iView)

    Hello,
I created a new room template based on a newly created workset which just contains the KM Navigation iView. As I went through the template wizard step by step (Content Administration > Collaboration Content > Room Template Administration) I didn't add any External Parameters (Step 3) and didn't add any extensions (Step 4). In the Mapping (Step 5) I mapped all internal parameter to "room_id" since I didn't know it any better. Then I created a room based on this template. When I entered the room I got the following error message. Is it possible that the following error has to do with the fact that I mapped all internal parameters to "room_id" and that I did not add any external parameters or any extensions?
