Error with MacPro Restore disc

I'm trying to wipe the internal HD on a MacPro tower (I'm selling the system). When I insert and hold the C key to boot from the Restore disc that shipped with the Mac, I get a kernel panic.
I can still boot the HD to the desktop of the existing OS installation, and select the restore option from the Restore disc, but on restart, the installer gives me an error dialog that says "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer," and offers OK or Restart.
The Installer error log has a couple of entries that say
"Folder Manager is being asked to create a folder [specific folder names here] while running as uid 0"
The system software on the HD has been upgraded to Snow Leopard - newer than what shipped with it originally -- but I've always wiped and restored Macs from their restore discs without any problem. Until now.
Shouldn't I be able to erase and restore the OS version that shipped with this Mac, regardless of what it's been upgraded to since then?

Yes, unless you have changed to a new graphics card that is not supported by the original software.
Try booting from a Snow Leopard retail DVD.

  • Starting up a mac with the restore disc?

I want to repair the the startup disc but they said I need to start the computer up with the restore disc? How do I do this? Thanks.

Hold the mouse button down while rebooting to open the cd tray if need be.
Hold c while the disk is in the Mac to boot from the installer disk.
Select Disk Utility from the installer menu and Repair Disk if you need to do that.
If you have a new Mac and want to run the Apple Hardware Test, option boot from the same cd instead.
As you know AHT updates with changes to Mac OS X, so the copy on the write only disk doesn't get updated. So don't totally freak if you get a error, it might be the firmware is changed. (on the Dual 2 you will too, I know )

  • 27" iMac dosnt come with system restore discs?

I just purchased a new 27" i5 and have no system restore / software discs. Does Apple no longer include the discs?

If you are really, really, 100% certain you want to do that, you would first erase the hard disk.
When you boot into Lion Recovery, click the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. When that loads you will see your hard disk on the left column. Select it, then click Erase. A warning dialog will appear telling you what you already know.
Then, install OS X as you did before.
Back up your system before doing any of this, if you want to change your mind. Also, before you start, go into iTunes and "deauthorize" your computer.
Beware that this will delete any preinstalled software that may have been "bundled" with your Mac. iLife comes to mind. "Bundled software" does not include iTunes, Mail, Safari, Address Book and many other programs, but iLife will not be reinstalled as that is considered extra, paid software. Erasing your hard disk will delete it for good, and I am certain it cannot be downloaded from the App Store.

  • Drive error with DVD-DL discs

I just bought a case of TDK DVD-DL's and so far on two discs it has burned so far but stopped with this error:
    The drive reported an error
    Sense Key = Medium Key
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    Write Error
Is this a faulty drive or faulty media, I tried using the built in burner and Toast.

    Hi-
Media errors are commonly due to incompatible or poorly made media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
As far as the drive goes, if other media burns properly, I would try a different brand of DL discs.
Taiyo Yuden is recognized as one of the top, quality disc makers.
    Verbatim is also a winner.
Slowing the burn, burning after a restart of the machine, and using a hard drive with ample free space are also ways to improve burn performance/reliability.
It is also possible that a firmware update for the optical drive could help the problem.
Firmware updates typically address media compatibility.

  • Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

The detailed problem is that I had used the computer for a long time without turning off.  I wanted to give it to someone else so I needed to clean the data off. Before deleting anything I switched off then on and the HD seemed to have developed a fault as the start up routine began then when the Hd started the computer crashed and restarted at the begining with the startup routine and I have not been able to go further than this.  I changed the HD for an old one that I had replaced previously which had the same software system, Leopard.  This worked perfectly but on switching off then on behaved as the other had.
I figured that if I could start with the restore disc I could clean the HD or at least investigate it.  Hence the need for a restore disc.
Would this work or is there something in the logic board that is upsetting the HD and what ever I do will not cure the problem.
    Any thoughts??

  • Error message when burning discs on a MacBook and MacPro Desktop

I have encountered a problem burning a CD-R with the MacBook. I created 12 image files (JPEG) totaling 48 MB. I placed them in a Burn Folder and tried to burn them to a CD-R. I recevied the following error message "Burning the disc failed because an unexpected error occurred (error Code 0x80020000). The same problem occurred on my MacPro desktop. I spoke with an Apple technician. She had me reset the hardware on my desktop. When that did not work she told me the disk was bad. I tried a different brand of CD-R and a DVD disk with the same results. She suggested that I reinstall the operating system. Since it happened on both of my Apple computers it seems to me that the problem is related to a software bug, since it is unlikely that both machines went bad at the same time. The MacBook is only 3 months old and the MacPro desktop a little over a year old. Today I discovered that the desktop would burn a CD-R if I had only one image file in the Burn folder. Has anyone run into this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you for your reply. I have some additional information that may help you. I initially found that if I tried to burn 12 JPEG image files to a CD-R I received the error message I reported in my first post. If, however, I only tried to burn 3 files to the CD-R, they were burned onto the CD and I was able to retrieve them. If I tried to burn more than 3 files it did not work.
I took my MacBook to the Apple store Genius counter yesterday to get some help and was able to exactly reproduce the errors. The Apple techs suggested replacing the CD/DVD drive. I am waiting for the new drive to arrive. In the mean time, I discovered that if I included any number of files and sub-folders in a single main folder, and then tried to burn that main folder it worked. I was subsequently able to successfully burn a single folder containing 300MB of files and sub-folders. This seems to me to be a bug in the Mac OS, especially since it happened in exactly the same way on 2 different late model Macs. Hope this helps. Let me know if you can reproduce my experience or have any additiona information.

  • Trying to boot from restore disc causes kernel panic error

Hi I am currently selling my MacBook Pro that is 6 months old. I wanted to pop in the restore disc today and format the drive and install Snow Leopard for the new owner. When I put in the  restore disc that came with the computer it begins the boot process(I can here it spinning up) but then I get a kernel panic error. I have tried testing the ram and putting in different ram but still get the same error every time. I haven't done anything to the hardware and have no issues with the dvd drive previously. I have confirmed this indeed the disc that was shipped with the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Erasing disks securely
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

yes did you buy it of somebody or a well known company such as apple or carphone warehouse?
and i mean the phone would have been activated in the first place with the sim card you get given when you first get the phone.
trying to activate the phone with another sim card that you did not get when you brought the phone may result in you not being able to activate it

  • IMac (Mid 2007) Restore Disc with Leopard OSX 10.5

Sometime after 26-Oct-07, I assume all new iMacs will be delivered with Leopard
factory installed and should come with an updated 10.5 Restore disc?
I wondered if Apple will offer the updated 10.5 Restore disc to customers that
    purchased (mid 2007) iMacs with 10.4.10 pre-installed?
Something tells me we will have to buy the retail 10.5 and no longer be able
to use the restore disc that came with the iMac (mid 2007).
My purchase date was 15-Sep-07 so I am probably SOL for any free upgrade.
    aRKay
Wishful thinking (that will never happen): Shortly after 26-Oct-07, Apple
will post a "iMac Software Update" for the mid 2007 iMacs that will change
    10.4.10 to 10.5.

    aRKay wrote:
Will there be a new Restore Disc for the new iMac delivered with 10.5? Will they sell it to the rest of us?
There'll be a new disc, although probably not on 10/26. Apple will not sell it to you. You will have to use the retail or upgrade disc. You will still be able to use your original restore discs to re-install bundled software if necessary.

  • Powerbook g4 12" failure to load with or without system restore disc

I searched around a bit and couldn't find anyone with exactly this problem. My hard drive failed a while ago, which I had kind of been expecting for a while. so i bought a new hitachi 120GB HD that is compatible with my machine.
i scrounged up my 10.2.3 system restore/install disc that came with my computer some 5 years ago, and tried to run it with my new hard drive. But my computer will not boot the disc. I ran the hardware checker disc, and everything turned out OK, but my computer will not boot the System Restore disc (I am holding C during startup to no avail). It gets to the gray apple and then the screen gets a thick horizontal line of static across it. if i try to boot without the sysrestore disc, i get a ? sign as if I was trying to run classic mode with a bad extension.
is my system restore disc busted or what? Is there another problem that the hardware checker disc couldn't find?
I don't really want to drop more money on a new OS, especially if it's not going to fix my problem.
oh and there are zero scratches on the disc- this is maybe the 2nd time ive taken it out of its sleeve/the bag that the sleeve came in. i don't understand why this isn't working and I really like this computer- this is the only serious problem it has ever had.

    Jack:
Thanks for the clarification. So even before the new HDD, the computer will not boot from the internal HDD or the install disk. However, it does start up, so that is good.
    Try Resetting the PRAM.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination immediately after the chime and before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down for three chimes.
    6. Release the keys and allow to boot.
If still no joy, see if you can boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with the computer. If you are able to boot, run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests.
Let me know how it goes.
    Cheers

    Hi Ckuan,
Thanks a lot for your advice.
Deleting the correupted back up means to delete the information of one month since the last back up I made is one month ago.....right?
This back up I made right before I restored my iphone.  During the restore however my OS was upgraded to 5.1.1. and reading the comments on the internet it seems I am not the only one whom experience this problem.
Can it be that if I downgrade my OS back to 5.1. the back up will not be considered as corrupted?  If so, how do I downgrade the iphone?
    Thanks in advance.
