  • Error 1406 1402 when downloading new iTunes

Each time I attempt to download the new version of iTunes, it says I have an error 1406 or 1402. I have received instructions previously for this problem because this has happened before, but now they are failing to work. These are the directions I have:
    For install error code 1406 & 1402:
    Try the following:
Start menu -> Run. Type in "regedit" (this takes you to the Registry Editor)
Find the heading HKEYLOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SOFTWARE inside it. Click on it.
    Find the heading Classes. Click
    Find the heading .cdda. Click
    Find the heading OpenWithList. Click
Right-click on "OpenWithList" folder. Select Permissions. Select Add button. Select the Advanced button. Select "Find Now" button.
The "Find Now" button should list all of the users, Select the "Everyone" user. Hit OK. This closes this dialog. Hit OK in the dialog box now on top. This closes this dialog.
On the Permissions for OpenWithList box now on top, select "allow" checkbox in the "full control" row & hit OK.
Do the exact same thing for the OpenWithProgids folder. Close regedit and try the install again.
Are there any suggestions besides these directions that could possibly help me successfully download iTunes?

if anyone else has this problem you just gotta follow this...
There is another set of steps that can resolve 1402 and 1406 errors when installing iTunes for Windows that involves manually editing the computer's registry file.
Important: Before starting these steps, make sure you are comfortable with the steps to be taken and the inherent risks involved in making changes to the Windows registry. Making mistakes in Regedit can cause strange behavior and can even prevent Windows from starting. It is strongly recommend making a backup copy of your Registry before making any changes to it.
On the Start menu, click Run.
Type in Regedit and click OK (this takes you to the Registry Editor).
Click the reveal button (+ sign) next to HKEYLOCALMACHINE.
Click the reveal button next to SOFTWARE under HKEYLOCALMACHINE.
Click the reveal button next to Classes.
Click the reveal button next to ".cdda." To save (make a backup) the original contents of the registry, so that you could go back to your original state if necessary:
Select the .cdda key in the left hand list.
On the File menu, click Export.
In the dialog that comes up, make sure the "Selected branch" button is selected for the Export Range.
Save with file with a name and location that is easy to find, for example, call the file "cdda settings" and save it to your desktop.
    Find the heading OpenWithList."
    Right-click on OpenWithList.
From the pop-up menu, click Permissions.
    Click the Add button.
    Click the Advanced button.
    Click the Find Now button.
The Find Now button should list all of the users.
    Select the Everyone user.
Click OK. This closes this dialog.
Click OK in the dialog box now on top. This closes this dialog.
In the Permissions for Everyone section, next to Full Control, select Allow. Click OK.
Repeat steps 8-16 but right-click on OpenWithProgids instead of OpenWithList.
Close Regedit and try the install again.
    Restore the Registry
To restore your registry back to the way it was before manually editing it, follow these steps:
Find the file you saved above and double-click it.
You will get a dialog that says "Are you sure you want to add the information in <name of file> to the registry?"
    Click "Yes".
This will overwrite the edit and return the registry to it's original state.
Note, that this file is just a backup. It can be deleted at any time when you are finished editing the registry and have installed iTunes successfully.

I have a 1406 error (HKEYLOCALMACHINE/software/classes/.cdda/openwithlist/Tunes.exe) and a 1402 error. I have tried everything I can, shut down spyware blockers, virus protection, stand alone Quick Time, but it will not work.

Why am I getting error code 1402 when trying to update adobe reader 10?

  • Unable to write to registry key for Acrobat XI - error 1406

    Hi all,
I have a problem regarding the installation of Adobe Acrobat XI 11.0.07 on an ASUS laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
In short, I am unable to complete the installation of Adobe Acrobat XI on this machine because Acrobat is not able to write the value to the registry key situated here:
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> Internet Explorer --> Toolbar.
I tried to find solutions on the internet, and have found one webpage at the Adobe Forums, which is this one: Error 1406.Could not write value Adobe ARM - and it was not very helpful, since the person asking solved his problem, but did not tell how he did. So, I found this page at Acrobat Help, called Error 1402 | Error 1406 | Acrobat, Reader where I tried the different solutions, but so far none of these have worked. What I did was to remove all previous versions of Adobe Acrobat, Reader, Air and so on. In fact, I deleted all software from Adobe in case one of these softwares were to blame, but it has not worked. But before I deleted all this software, I deleted Acrobat and Reader several times, but as you probably already have found out, it did not work. As this did not work, I tried the next solution at Acrobat Help, which was to "Set permissions to their defaults in the registry". I followed the solution completely and did everything it said, but it has not worked. As a note, I have to say that the registry key type I have problems with is called "Locked", the type is REG_DWORD and the data value is (0). Does this have anything to do with it? I am not too familiar with editing the registry. Though, I did try to change the value to (1) and updating the registry, but it did not work...
More information: nevertheless if I install the complete version of Adobe Acrobat XI or the typical installation, the same error comes up: error 1406. And I did scan my system with my antivirus software, called Bullguard, to see if there were any viruses; there were none. I also closed my antivirus software and diabled the firewall of Bullguard, but that was not succesful either, and I did a scan of my system using cmd as an administrator (sfc /scannow), and the program found some errors it could not fix. As far as I can see, it found three .dll files with errors. I have the document called sfcdetails.txt if that would be any helpful to you.
Besides that, I am not sure what to do. I did pay for Adobe Acrobat the 23rd of January, 2015, and I have not managed to make it work properly yet, and I cannot update the software, since I have this problem with the registry. I am able to use the software for what I had to use it for until now, but I would like to be able to use it for everything it stands for and update it to prevent any lapse in security.
Thank you. I hope you have any ideas for my problem and will be able to help me!
    Best regards,
    Mads

    Hi Rahul,
Thank you for your answer. Though, it did not solve my problem! I did what you said: I tried using the Adobe Acrobat cleaner tool, and afterwards, I restarted my computer. After this, I downloaded the program from your link and I tried to install the program, but I did not succeed, because the same error came up, which is this:
Error 1406. Could not write value {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar.
With this error, the only options are to abort, retry or ignore the install, but none of these solves the issue, I am afraid.
But what I think it is all about is how to gain access to the registry. I followed the tutorial, I mentioned above, but I were not able to solve it... I gained administrator access to the registry, I made the current administrator account the owner of the key (the current administrator is not the original administrator of the computer, since I changed this long time ago), and I made the permissions correctly, I guess. I followed the tutorial, anyhow. Though, what confuses me, is that when pressing the button, called "Advanced", and entering the menu called "Advanced security settings for Toolbar" (I have the Danish version of Windows, excuse me if I did not translate it correctly), I see many persmission posts, two of which have the name of the current administrator account. One of these have full control, the persmissions from this are not inherited and they are used on "this key and underkeys". The second only has a special permission, it is inherited from "MACHINE\SOFTWARE\..." and it is used only on this key. How to change this, I am not sure. But I do not suspect that there should be two permissions for the same administrator account? Do you know if this is right?
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Mads

  • Cannot reinstall acrobat x pro; error message 1402

I had acrobat X pro installed, could not update, error message 1402 popped up.  Adobe site suggested uninstalling Acrobat and reinstalling, uninstalled, tried to reinstall but with 57 seoncds left of reinstallation error message 1402 appeared and installation was backed out.  I went from not being able to update to not having the program on my machine at all.  How can I reinstall?

Here is one suggestion: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-1402-error-1406-acrobat.html. What I suggest it to follow the instructions to uninstall all versions. Then run the cleaner (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html) and remove any part left of the Acrobat folder (typically in Program Folders>Adobe). Reboot as the administrator and disable anti-virus. Then try the install.
