Errors 410 and 420 with Agilent 34970A

Hello, all. I'm helping a colleague with an application measuring ten channels each of temperature, frequency, and current using an Agilent 34970A DAQ switch (GPIB) and LabVIEW 7. We keep getting errors 410 and 420 from the switch. When the error occurs, then the switch doesn't report all 30 pieces of data. I'm looking for ways to a) clear the error; and b) prevent the errors.
Thanks in advance,
-Dan A

According to the manual, 410 is Query Interupted and 420 is Query Unterminated. The first can happen when you send a query but there is still data in the output buffer. If you've requested a certain number of bytes during a read, you probably need to increase that number in order to sure that all data is retrieved. A Device clear command will clear the error. Query Unterminated happens when the instrument is addressed to talk but there is no command pending that will place data in the buffer. The example in the manual cites sending a CONFIG command which doesn't generate data and then doing a read.
Are you using the drivr from NI or have you written your own?

Could you show us some code?  Your question is a bit open-ended and we could considerably narrow down the choices based on what we see.

  • Communicating with agilent 34970A using labview.

    Hi,
I'm using labview to control agilent 34970A DAQ. I was using VEE and
now I'm planning to use Labview. I downloaded the necassary drivers. I
want to know how i can get started. i.e. generating sub vi's like

When you do what Dennis has suggested you'll also find that there will be one or more high level examples included with the Instrument Driver that use the lower level functions. The document on how to write LabVIEW Instrument drivers is pretty useful in getting an overview:

  • Compatability with Agilent 34970a Model

I need to check if the Agilent 34970a Data Acquisition/Switch Unit is compatible with DASYLab. I know it functions with Labview, but the company I am performing a project for prefers DASYLab. The unit uses the VISA language. Thank you for your help.
    Josh

    How are you connecting it?
It's not quite as easy as the LabVIEW VISA drivers, but DASYLab has both GPIB and RS232 inputs which can be configured with the appropriate SCPI commands.

  • Scanning with external DMM with Agilent 34970A using Labview

    Hi,
I am a relatively inexperienced user of Labview. I have written a VI to
scan several channels on a 34970A using the 34901A multiplexer module
to take voltage readings. I want to use a more accurate DMM than the
internal one however so I have hooked up a Fluke 8840A to the agilent
and I want the scanner to simply switch between the channels while the
fluke actually takes the voltage measurements. How do I modify my
existing VI so that it uses an external DMM? One of the driver VI's is
'configure external instrument' which i assume is the obvious option
but i'm not sure where to insert this to modify the VI.
    Thanks
    Tom

What you do kind of depends on the capabilities of the external DMM and how fancy you want to get. If you at the section called 'Scanning With an External Instrument', you'll see how the connections can be made for an automatic scan. The 34970 will issue a trigger to the external instrument and when the measurement is complete, the instrument will send a signal back to the 34970 to close the next relay in the scan list. If you can do this, then the Conf Exteranl Instrument would replace the Conf Scan List and Conf Scan functions in the Advanced Scan Example. I'm not sure about the Conf Trigger but I suspect you would need to set slightly different parameters for that. The Read function would have to be replaced with a read of your external instrument. Some additional functionality may have to be added to take a reading after each relay closure if the DMM cannot save a series of measurements.
I had to once use an external instrument and didn't do any of this. The external instrument did not have external triggering or a an output that could be used to advance the scan so I just used the HP34970 Switch function to close a relay exclusively and a dmm read inside a for loop. I created an array of channels and the for loop auto-indexed them. This was simpler to program but the scan took a bit longer than what is described in the manual.

  • Error message and problem with code

    Hi all,
I have a code that i need to print the total
ie: retail multiplied by the quantity entered
this is what I have written
but when compiling error message is (not a statement )
    any tips appreciated
or is this part of the code completely wrong???
Remembering that I have 4 arrays in the code
    paul
    System.out.println((input_part +"\t"+ "\t" + qty[input_part-1]+"\t"+ "\t"retail[input_part-1]+"\t"+ "\t" + "\n");
    or is this more appropriate??
    total=(quantity*cost);
    System.out.println("Total Retail is:" + total);
But with this i get error
Operator * cannot be applied to int, double[]
    total=(quantity*cost);

    System.out.println((input_part +"\t"+ "\t" + qty[input_part-1]+"\t"+
"\t"retail[input_part-1]+"\t"+ "\t" + "\n");Look at what comes before "retail" in your code sample, and after the "\t" that immediately preceeds it. Should there really be nothing between those two values?
But with this i get error
Operator * cannot be applied to int, double[]
total=(quantity*cost); It's telling you that you can't apply the operator * (multiplication) to an integer and an array.
Did you really think that you'd be able to multiply a number by an array?
Perhaps you meant to do something like
    total = quantity * cost[lastElt];

As you can see, its the Suns JDBC.
    PLEASE HELP !!

    Thak you jawbe.
I avoid the DATE field and scale the NUMBER to NUMBER(p, s) then can insert and update. Im not quite shure if this was the solution or avoiding DATE field (see below).
There is another problem with DATE field. Since it mapped to TIMESTAMP the component or the JDBC driver spects time information. I can insert and update if I enter date and time but my user shouldnt must enter time info when the field is intented to be just date. Im working now in assigning by hand (from and to rowset) and spect to get working soon.
The problem with the deleteRow() stills. I will see further and let you known.

  • Agilent 34970A Switch/DMM

    Hello!
    I have a problem with Agilent's 34970A.
We have a testsystem consisting of Agilent 34401A DMM, Agilent 53131A
Counter and the troublesome Agilent 34970A.
I'm using VISA most of the time to control the 34970A, I say most of the
time because I have been forced to do the most strange programming to
make the program work. I have never noticed any problem with the other
instruments mentioned. But the 34970A can suddenly perform a reset,
switch itself off or just "freeze". Most of the time it is not possible
to turn it back on again without pulling the plug. I thought I had the
solution when I closed the VISA session in the middle of the program and
performed a reset on the instrument. I know it sounds strange but
    somehow it wo
rked much better then. But now it seems like it needs more
to function properly. Have any of you guys ever heard of this kind of
problem or maybe you've got an idea on how to solve it?
    Best regards
    /Fredrik

    Hi,
Do you get the same problems with more than one 34970A. Because this sounds like a hardware problem with your 34970A. Have you tried using NI-Spy to monitor the bus traffic.
I've had no problems driving the 34970A just using the basic NI driver. The unit was part of a system for a life test application and therefore was required to take a series of reading over a period of time.

    Ray.

  • Agilent 34401a error -410

    Hi everyone,
I am having some problems adding communicating via GPIB with three instruments at the same time.  The three instruments are an Oxford superconducting magnet power supply, an SRS lock-in amplifier, and an HP 34401A multimeter (used to read the voltage output of an analog lock-in).  The problem is my code runs for a minute or two, and then the Agilent evidently gets bogged down before timing out and spitting out an error on the front panel (error -410 "query interrupted").  I'm running this on a pretty old system (Win 2K, Labview 6.1, Visa 2.6.0) which doesn't help with the speed issue.
I have been running my code for a couple years now without any major problems (occasionally the DMM will give an error if I abort the program at the wrong point) - all the problems I have had have been fixed by shutting down all the electronics and computer and restarting everything.  The problem is now when I try to add the SRS lock-in to the code.  I can run the code witht just the SRS lock-in and magnet supply, and I can run the code with as many as three DMM's being read over the GPIB with the magnet supply.  The problem only happens when I have the SRS lock-in and the DMM being read at the same time.  My suspicion (based on the error message) is that one of the instruments is leaving some data on the communication bus somewhere, and it is overloading the DMM, though I have unfortunately not yet found what exactly is causing the overload.  Does anyone have any guesses of what to try?  The help documentation in Labview is unfortunately even older than the VI I'm using (some of the inputs in the "Initialize instrument" VI are different from what is shown in the help menu).  Does anyone know if it is easy/safe to communicate more directly with the DMM than using the VI's included in Labview?  I ask because the SRS lock-in, for instance, is really easy to read - you just write one VISA command and the lock-in returns whatever the front-panel of the instrument is reading.  You can of course create more complicated codes to read or set other instrument parameters, but all I need to do is read a simple DC voltage -10 to 10V with the DMM, so anything I can do to make the communication faster/simpler would be good since right now my data resolution is pretty limited due to the lag in all the communication steps.  Also, does anyone know if there is anywhere online I can access newer help files on the Agilent/HP sub-VI's since the help files on my computer are inconsistent with the VI's? Thanks!

I would assume that you know that you cannot communicate to the instruments 'at the same time'. It would help to see some code to ensure you really are doing sequential reads and writes.
It would also seem your problems started when you added the SRS. There have been numerous posts about GPIB problems with that instrument. You can, of course skip the 34401 driver and use the SCPI commands but I'm not sure that would make any difference.
p.s. You complain about the speed of your old system but the limiting factor is almost always the instruments and the GPIB communication itself. A faster pc/newer PS/current LabVIEW would not change much if you kept the existing program.

  • When trying to work with Agilent 34401A multimeter (serial RS-232 connection), HP34401A Getting Started.vi gives always the message: "Error 1073807369 occurred at Old VISA Open ".

Baud rate and parity are set correctly, RS-232 cable is also connected correctly. My QuickBasic program has no problems to read and write to the Multimeter. It is obviously a software problem: the same error is persistent if I disconnect RS-232 cable.
I downloaded NI-VISA 2.6 for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP frorm digital.ni.com and installed it. But it did not help.
    Thank you in advance

  • Unterminated errors using NI's IVI (AG6000) with Agilent's DSO5054A Oscilloscope

    Hi,
I keep getting timeout errors when using the IVI file ag6000 with Agilent's DSO5054A Oscilloscope over GPIB.  Using TestStand, I am able to calibrate the o-scope about 50-60% of the time and read from the o-scope about 2% of the time.  When sending a command using the IVI, the o-scope typically displays "query UNTERMINATED."  Attached is the error TestStand gives when it is not able to talk correctly.  In MAX, I can talk to the o-scope using the GPIB communicator tool 100% of the time.
Is there an updated version of the ag6000 IVI file that works with the DSO5054A that I don't know about?
    Thanks.

I believe I am giving enough time for the commands.  What I meant was that I know the NI GPIB card is good, the cable is good, and the o-scope is good, it is just the o-scope just does not like the signals sent using either the LabVIEW LabWindows/CVI Measurement Studio for Visual Studio IVI or the LabVIEW Plug and Play driver.  The site takes me from the DSO5054A page to a 6000 series driver, although according to the description it should work with the o-scope.
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.model_page?p_model_id=10028
Using the above IVI/Plug and Play drivers, the DSO5054A reads the correct signal but unterminated, so it doesn't know what to do half the time.  In TestStand, I added in the initiate command and added a wait of 10 seconds, and when it doesn't timeout on the calibrate command it will timeout on the fetch/read command.  In LabVIEW, using the read single waveform.vi the GUI displays the signal from the o-scope about 10% of the time, while the rest of the time it times out with error code -1073807339.

  • Why is it that when I am trying to install an adobe product, I get 33% of the way through and then it gives me an error "unable to load metafile"??  It happened with Reader and now with Flashplayer.  With the Reader, I was able to find a different install

Why is it that when I am trying to install an adobe product, I get 33% of the way through and then it gives me an error "unable to load metafile"??  It happened with Reader and now with Flash player.  With the Reader, I was able to find a different installation link using the troubleshooting guide.  I cannot find the same with flash player.  Please tell me how to install Flash player because there is a website that I cannot even view without it.  BTW That is annoying that I cannot even see the website without flash player
    my system is XP

    Use these installers:
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Flash Player for Mac OS X
For Adobe Reader go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
