Errors at startup when initializing USB (ports still work though)

Hi. I've recently returned to using Arch Linux after a hiatus of about 2 years. I'm loving it so far and I've managed to set up everything relatively easily, but I've got some mysterious error strings at system startup. I see them shortly after Grub messages disappear, before X launches and loads.  They usually appear thrice.
The below code is a fragment of dmesg output that seems relevant. The actual error string I see at bootup is the last line of this output.
[ 7.644410] usbcore: registered new interface driver ath3k
[ 7.644439] usb 1-10: USB disconnect, device number 4
[ 7.675574] input: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input14
[ 7.954663] usb 1-10: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd
[ 7.969827] usb 1-10: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409
USB devices simply work, without any unusual behaviour. My mouse works without batting an eye anywhere I plug it, same for memory sticks. I suppose the same would be true for any other devices.
What does this error string mean then? And how should I correct whatever the hell is wrong?

The error string means that the language descriptor could not be read from the device (-61 is ENODATA), and thus is defaulting to English. (0x0409).
As to why you're receiving that error, I'm uncertain, though I'd be inclined to believe it's that the firmware for the device is responding to the get string descriptor request in an unexpected manner.
You could try updating firmware, but honestly, if everything is working, it's safe to ignore. I presume the device descriptions aren't garbled?

  • What is wrong with my 30" Cinema Display?  The USB and FireWire ports still work, but the screen is pitch black. When you plug it into the computer, it detects that it's a Cinema Display.

For some reason, the USB and FireWire ports still work.

If you shine a really bright light directly into the screen can you then see a faint image on the screen? If so, that would indicate the backlight has died (hardware failure) and the unit needs repairing.

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?  Obviously the device is operational.  Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn?  If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

  • Left USB port only works when entering BIOS

Hi all -- I have a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5106, the LEFT USB port only works when I enter the BIOS at boot-time. If I disconnect the drive, i.e. eject it and then remove it, the port stops working. The other two ports at the right work fine. I've tested this with known good flash drives and Kensington USB trackball that work fine on four other computers, and the other two USB ports. I'm thinking its software/BIOS because hardware would fail intermittently, I could not get the port to work if there was a failing connection. As stated, this work-around succeeds EVERY time. I have not upgraded the bios. Has anyone had this problem?

  • Help, 10.6.8 update, all usb ports stop working after 10hrs

I've been running 10.5.8 for ever and finnaly tried to update to 10.6.8.. After I did it, the usb ports all kick out any connected devises after around 10 or so hours. I ran of the install disk, using disc utillty, disk repair, and repair permisions a few times and it did not help.
I did the install a few times  again to try to see if it would help and didnt.
i tried an erase and install and migrated everything over from my orignal back up external drive that is running 10.5.8 and issue is still  there.
My old 10.5.8 back up external drive works fine and does not have this issue, and I have been using that as my start up drive instead and working from there. But that is not really a solution and a temp work around.
Any suggestions would really help. thanks!

I have a early 2008 macbookpro 2.8 duel with silver keys.
I purchaed the 10.6 disk from the apple store. I've had the machine for years and purchased it refurbished from apple.
I did the erase and install and migrated everything over from external drive, then did update to 10.6.8 and the usb ports still would stop working after a few hours.. Then I read on another apple community forus to reset pram, and pull out the power cable, take out the battery and hold power key for 5 seconds, then restart. that seemed to fix usb issue so far..
But overall my computer seems to be running slower then when using just 10.5.8 and it did not wake from sleep once and I had to force power off and restart.. But maybe its just getting used to 10.6.8. we will see..
Also, on another note, my battery is totally dead, and I can only run computer with power cable.. Will this affect things? it never did with 10.5.8..
Oh, on my erase and install, I just did the simplest version and did not do the full erase to zero using he advanced security measures.. I just did the one where it writes on top of everything..

  • Cannot get USB port to work after re-installing of SP2 on Satellite Pro L20

After re-installing XP Home SP2 and downloading all the updates & Drivers from here I cannot get my USB port to work properly, if I have more than one peripheral plugged in it says "Bandwidth Exceeded".
I have a Behringer BCD2000 which is a souncard/midi controler for DJ mixing, it worked fine before i reinstalled windows, now it clicks and pops when playing tunes, also the ASIO doesn't work when I run Traktor (Dj software) and the program freezes. Any other external sound card wont work either. I've been all through the device manager no conflicts apart from an ! over Serial under hidden devices.
I'm lost, is my only option buying a PCMCIA sound card, it worked fine before so surely there is a software solution to this?
If anyone can help I'd be most appreciative.

    Hello
Try to disable USB Error Detection:
    1. Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
    2. Select Device Manager to view the Device Manager
    3. Locate and click the Universal Serial Bus Controller entry.
    4. Double-click Universal Host Controller and then click the Advanced tab of the Universal Host Controller Properties.
    5. Put a checkmark in the box for Disable USB Error Detection. Click OK.
    6. Restart the computer to see if "Bandwidth Exceeded" message occurs again
Did you use recovery media to reinstall WXP? When someone write it worked before and now not it is really not easy to say why this happen. Try to configure notebook as before and maybe it will work again. Behringer BCD2000 is not known to me and I dont know how it works and which software must be preinstalled there.
Can you use different USB devices like external HDD, USB mouse, USB memory stick or printer?

  • Thinkpad W530 Yellow (Rear) USB port stopped working

I have had my W530 for about 3 month and the rear yellow USB port just stopped working a few days ago. I have recovered the whole system to factory status and updated the BIOS but the USB port is still not working. I tried several devices, it seems like that the USB has no power at all. The LED on the flash drives do not come on when I plug it in. All the other USB ports are working. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Any help is appreciated.

    Hi all,
The yellow USB port of my W530 stopped working suddenly today. It can charge but cant recognize any devices. The other devices work well. I have tried many ways like updating the bios, setting the bios to defaults... still not working.
seems that its a big issue
    Any ideas? Thank you!

  • USB ports not working after OSX 10.9.1 update

    I have a late 2011 MBA 13".
The 2 USB ports stopped working as soon as I updated to 10.9.1.
I tried zapping PRAM and resetting the SMC.
I even turned the thing off for hours and still nothing.
    Any idea how to fix?
Everything was fine until I did the update.
    Thanks.

This is not a known bug affecting 2011 MBA computers with 10.9.1 so there is something wrong with your installation. Since zapping PRAM and resetting the SMC did not work I suggest that you try one of two things but first make sure you have backed up your computer.
    1) download Mavericks and reinstall it. Sometimes an update goes awry and a reinstall fixes it. Since doing this won't disturb any of your data or applications it would be my first choice. You'll be downloading 10.9.1 so you won't have to perform any updates.
    2) boot into the recovery mode, erase the hard drive and then download and install Mavericks. Once Mavericks is finished installing you'll be asked if you'd like to migrate data and applications from a backup. Say yes and if your backup drive isn't already connect it, do so. Select your applications folder and account folders from the list and let the Setup Manager do its magic.
BTW - this is why one of my several backup hard drives is a cloned backup using Carbon Copy Cloner (SuperDuper! Is another good choice). I can boot up my computer using this backup and download the newest version of Mavericks on it if I haven't already done so. I always quit the installer first and make a copy of it because the installer program deletes itself once it is finished which is something of a pain. It gives me more options including being able to boot my computer with it, erase the computer and copy the installer to the computer rather than having to perform the download all over again if step 1 fails. Since I always download a new copy of the OS when Apple releases an update this computer will have the newest version of the installer so I also can skip the download step of option 1 and just copy it over and install on the computer.

  • MAC PRO Internal USB ports stopped working

Hello, I have a mac pro 8 core with an USB internal ports problem, the 2 in front are not working anymore, and from the 3 in the back only the middle one is working.
I tried to pull all the power out for a whole night, resetting the pram and nvram but nothing helps.
When for example I put in a keyboard in one of the ports that is not working and when I power up the machine and I press the ALT key I get the choice of startup preferences, once I select one, and the system boots up the ports stops working, so before the OS loads the usb ports are working !!!
    What to do ??

This is a hardware failure. While USB ports on the whole are just not designed very well, leading to their failures being pretty common, your issue sounds a bit more like the USB controller chip is failing.
In any case, the answer is to take it to a repair shop. If they're smart about it, they'll replace the logic board and see if that also fixes the front ports. If not, they'll replace the front I/O panel as well.

  • G580 (2189) USB Ports not working

    Hello,
I have an ongoing problem (for 2 months, before I had no problem at all) with all 3 USB ports on my G580. None of them are working properly, if I plug in a device they do not recognise it, however, the devices get power, e.g. I can charge my mobile phone through USB port but it does not recognise it. The most irritating part is that also my opctical mouse does not work.
I have tried a couple of solutions like:
    - restarted the computer
    - uninstalled the USB root hub, devices etc
    - disabled the above mentioned ones
    - ultimately I refreshed the OS (I have 64 bit Win 8.1) but the problem still occurs.
    I attached a picture.
Thank you for your help in advance.
    Balázs

    hi Balázs,
Just to check, was this G580 (2189) originally running on Windows 7 as indicated in this pdf datasheet? If yes, were the USB ports working fine before you upgraded to Windows 8.1?
If the USB ports were working fine before the upgrade then it's likely that this is an OS issue as discussed in this microsoft blog.
    Things that you can try:
    1. Run Windows Update to get the latest patch and bug fixes for the OS.
    2. Check this microsoft blog on "What to Try When Your USB Device is an "Unknown Device"
    3. Check this microsoft blog on how to apply a registry workaround.
Hope you get the issue sorted out.

  • USB Ports stopped working - Vista Home Premium (32bit)

I reloaded Windows Mobile Device Center yesterday.  When I got home and booted my computer, all 3 USB Ports and the card reader do not work.  There is power, but no use of the device.  I have read several help posts on this and I have attempted to fix without success.  The one thing I keep reading is the USB Root Hub.  I do not have this in my device manager.  I have uninstalled all of the Universal USB Controllers in attempt to allow Windows to install the drivers.  I am getting a Code 39 error and it says the system cannot locate the preconfigured driver folders.  I cannot use a mouse, printer, or sync my phone without the use of my USB Ports.  Can anyone please help me?
    Terah

    Hello,
    I recently bought a Pavilion dv6-6c11sa laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Everything was working fine for about a week, and then yesterday all of the USB ports stopped working. I have 4 USB ports in total, two 2.0 and two 3.0. No matter what peripheral device I plug in, mouse or flash drive etc, they're not recognized by the laptop. The lights don't even light up on the devices, regardless of the port. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers in device manager, taking out the battery and rebooting, installing the chipset drivers (AMD), nothing works. No programs had been installed 3 days prior to the occurence, although I had rebooted several times in that time frame. I simply booted up the laptop yesterday, and nothing worked.

  • Installed Windows & 32 Bit But Drivers and USB ports NOT WORKING.

I bugh an HP Pavillion TS 14 Notebook that came preinstall with Windows 8.1 64 bit which I hate so wiped the drives and installed Windows 7 32 bit and now I have a big problem.  None of my network drivers work and the 2 uSB ports where I plug my mouse and other SB hardware in no longer work.
I did a back up of the SW Set up file that has all of the HP dvers for my laptop but both the network and video divers won't install. And When I try to install the drives I get the eror message saying they are not compatible with this version of Windows.
I have loked on the HP website under my laptop model which s as above but HP don't do drivers for Windows 7 32 for my laptop. And I have looked on both the Realteck website for both the Realteck ethnet and Realteck wireless network drivers but none of them work or install on my operating system. The video drivers Intel don't work either. So I am really stuck a I cannot go back to Windows 8.1 as though that 32 bit Windows 7 would work on my laptop but most of my drivers are not compatible with the operating sytem And I don't want to install 64 bit Windows as I like 32 bit.
The drivers that are not working on Windows 7 32 bit are:
    Realteck RTL8188EE 802-11b/gn witeless lan
    Realteck ethnet die and
    Intel High definition graphcs driver
Which don't work at all on Windows 7 32 bit as they are 64 bit only drivers.
So can you please post me a link bth the network and Intel graphics drvers that work with my laptop. As I have tried lots of different Realteck and raphics drivers for Window 7 but NONE of them work on my system. And None of my USB ports are working either. So how do I solve this problem?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
Should be no problem to get W7 32 bit to work on that model.
Just use all of the drivers and software from the HP Probook 450 G0 on your model except the Audio, BIOS and firmware files.
Your model uses the Intel HD graphics driver only.
The first driver you have to install is the Intel chipset installation utility and then reboot.
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?cc=us&lang=en&sp4ts.oid=5359407&ac.ad...
Audio:  Accept the agreement.  Download and install the first driver on the list.
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownT...
If for some reason, the Intel HD graphics driver from that model does not work, then use this one...

  • USB ports not working in safe mode

I am trying to back up my computer before i take it to the apple store and i cant back up in safe mode using time machine, becuase im guess the USB ports arent working. Are there any solutions to this problem?

Ok, where is this Intel driver? There is no such thing "program manager" so I am guessing you mean the Programs and features control panel, but on my machine that whole window is blank after a clean install. I still cannot get the USB ports to activate. Two fresh installs and several different USB sticks later and no luck.  Should I just give up and go to Windows 8.1?  I really need Windows 7 to work if at all possible. Other devices shows one USB controller without driver software so I suppose that's the culprit. There are other USB devices installed under the USB section of Device Manager, but they apparently have nothing to do with the USB ports themselves, just devices like the trackpad etc.  I've spent two hours on this so far and it's getting out of control.  Why doesn't this work with generic USB drivers?

  • T420s USB port stopped working / lost power - Please help

    Hi!
The left side USB port on my T420s has stopped working. Please see below picture for its location and description.
The port has worked fine for the last 3 years, and just stopped recognising any devices (in this case a Logitech unifying receiver, which has woked just fine on the very same port). I have tested it with my mobile phone cable, which worked previously, and found that it does not charge/give power either.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Nope, it started to happen a couple of months ago as far as I can remember. Interesting that your problem, Harris, began after a software update.
Nope, I haven't tried 'Repair Disk' from the install disk yet...Would this make a difference if the actual hard disk isn't the problem?
On another note, I have just upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard and all the above permission messages now no longer appear, and I get an almost-clean slate afterwards. The only message I get now is...
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Does anyone know what this means??
