Errors & Declined: Loving My Mac But iChat Feels So "Windows"!

Every time my iChat partner (who's also on a Mac with built in iSight camera) tries to iChat me, there's the usual ambiguous "communication error", or if I initiate a iChat it's always that my invitation was "declined" (when in fact it wasn't). Very frustrating, as I'm sure most people in this forum would attest. I've noticed that when I restart my computer and we try to iChat again, it usually works. Why is this? I don't want to have to restart my computer every time we iChat.
Loving my Mac, but am pretty disgusted with iChat. It feels so Windows! Yecch! Any thoughts, suggestions out there? Thank you.
Greg

Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussions
The declined message sounds like the far end has some sort of protection active in their modem or router. The most common is DoS (Denial of Service) or SPI (Statful Packet Inspection) that cut the ports involved if it is "perceived" the network is under attack.
DoS works on the basis of Too much Data `Too Quickly" and iChat can be seen as this, particularly in Leopard as the Audio and Video data is now on one port.
The issue of rebooting makes it look like you have Port Forwarding set up and still using DHCP and your IP changed at some stage.

  • IPod not showing up at all on Mac but works fine on Windows?

I've been searching for an answer on these discussion boards for hours and have not yet found any situation that was quite like mine and I'm getting a bit frazzled and worried.
I have a 120GB iPod classic, which I've used for two years with an ACER laptop and it works perfectly. Two months ago, I switched to a Macbook Pro and synced my iPod with it; again everything worked fine. My iPod was synced with the Mac and all the new music had been transferred.
Today, I've been trying to connect my iPod to my Mac but nothing happens. It only charges (and I can't even be sure that it IS charging because the charging green sign does not show up on the iPod). It does not show up in Finder, or in the iTunes source list; it does not sync. I've reset it a billion times, restarted my mac, switched USB cords and USB ports, even downloaded and installed every software update imaginable but nothing is working.
If I leave the iPod connected to the Mac for a while, something even more alarming happens. It connects for around 3 seconds, and then ejects itself repeatedly. It's like watching someone go insane.
Naturally, I freaked out and tried to connect the iPod to a PC and it is working perfectly on the PC. Please, someone help. I have no idea what's going on.

Did you download and install the latest version of ITunes over the existing installation?

If the iPod is recognized okay on the PC, try restoring it there and then reconnecting it to your own laptop.

  • Have Imac with boot camp windows 7. Sound works great in mac but no sound in windows?

I have new IMAC 24 with snow leopard os and installed windows 7 ultimate 32 with boot camp. The sound works great when in MAC but there is no sound when boot up in windows. The mixers show a sound level as music is plaing but no sound out of speakers or earphones. I read on forum that many others have had same situation with Mac Book Pros and had success by downloading new realtec audio drivers, but my system has Cirius 2406 ab9 drivers and I can't find any replacements for them. Does anyone have a fix?

Keep on trying, keep searching as there are quite a few work around's for different issues.
One way is to reinstall the Boot Camp drivers and update them again via the Apple Software Updater in Windows. You did update them the first time, right?
Or extract the sound drivers from the Boot Camp package (or the DVD if you have it) and just install those again. You should find a few how-to's in the search results.

  • IPod Nano Sync with Mac, but iPod formatted for Windows

I finally changed to the Mac platform and all my iPods and iPhones were synced with a Windows based computer. While my iPhones were not a problem, my iPod Nano (4GB 2nd generation) seemed not be recognized by my iMac.
I can't seem to get my iMac to show the iPod under Devices to reformat it. Anyone have any advice to give?
I have plugged it in to a my Windows based work laptop and it seems to work fine. However I don't sync with that machine and I have already sold my old Windows based computer it was synced to.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I have three iPods: 40GB iPod photo, 2GB black iPod nano and 1GB iPod shuffle. Each one has it's own playlist to auto sync songs from (technically, the 40GB iPod is synchronized manually, but the other two have playlists to sync automatically from). They each have different names so iTunes knows they're each different. So, you shouldn't have any trouble keeping just two iPods separate with your Mac mini or iMac.

  • Sync iPod to Mac, but store files on Windows and Linux

I am an advanced user on both mac and widows system. I had my old 3rd Gen ipod where it was in FAT32 format and would sync to a Win machine. Then I could use the ipod to transfer data (ala external harddrive) on windows and mac platforms.
So now I have a 5th Gen Ipod and Itunes on my G5. Today I wanted to use the ipod to move some files between my work windows machine and home to my mac. To make a long story short the new ipod is formatted to be hfs+ journeled system, which windows can't read.
So I figure the easy solution is to reformat the ipod to be win-dos format, let it put the ipod software on, dump the library back and I should have a 5th gen with FAT32 that can be read by windows (or linux). So here's the rub
I used Disk Utility in OSX to partition the ipod several times. the first time I just specified ms-dos format (or whatever the disk utility calls a windows partition). All went well until the updater could not put the software on the new ipod claiming that it had to be in mac format. Then I tried to split the drive and parition into a large mac/hfs partition (for all the itunes files) and a small windows partition for the ipod (for data file storage). The problem is that the updater kept selecting the fat32 partition for installation (because I had to choose master boot record in order to be able to put the windows parition on there. at least this is what I suspect was happening). Two partitions woudl mount on the desktop, but only one would control the ipod.
So why not just let the windows parition be the one partition that had the ipod control software on it, you say? Because then I'm back to the problem that the iPod Updater won't deal with updating the windows partition.
Any ideas on a work around?

My concern is that when I have to update the iPod (in the future), will the windows based updater software be required?
Only if you want to continue to use it on Windows machines.
If you want to use the Mac Upddater, it will not be read by Windows.
If I do what you are suggesting, will the ipod return to being a resident mac based sycing device even though the first update/install of the ipod software was on a windows machine?
No. You can use it on both/either Mac and WIndows.
This is why I thougth some sort of partition with space set aside for the windows partition would be the workaround?
The iPod Updater formats the entire disk, not a partition.

  • Micro SD crashes entire OS(Mac) but works perfectly on Windows/Linux

    Hello,
I bought a Micro SD(class 10) card and an adapter that works perfectly(and extremely fast) on Windows/Linux but it doesn't matter the file system scheme that I use with, my Mac will ENTIRELY FREEZE while trying to read/write anything!.
Tried different adapters and different filesystems(fat32, exfat, ntfs, HFS in all flavors, etc).
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, no problem with the backup thing.
But the apps? Will I have to reinstall them all?
I´ve tryied deleteng the preferences file and restarting, but nothing happens. When I try to manually add an interface on the network preferences, there is no ethernet choice. In terminal, there is no ethernet interface when I call ifconfig, and I cannot ping to another computer.
I´m verifying/repairing disk permissions right now.

  • Hybrid flash drive: Bootable Mac, but still readable on Windows. Possible?

I love the idea of having a bootable OS X installation thumb drive, but would also like to use another partition on that same thumb drive to transfer files between Windows machines.
A bootable OS X drive must be partitioned GUID Partition Table (GPT) - but every time I've tried to read a FAT32 partition on that drive under Windows (even if I've wiped the drive, and that's the only partition there), it's failed to even see the drive.  Very frustrating.
It appears that Windows boxes can only see drives with Master Boot Record (MBR) as the partition scheme; GPT completely stymies most such machines (e.g. photo-printing kiosks in drug stores).
So: Is is possible at all to have a single thumb drive with multiple partitions, which contain one partition which is bootable on the Mac, and another partition which can make files visible to Windows machines?

Glad to hear that newer Windows versions don't suffer this limitation - but I have yet to see a Windows machine in common use in the expected environments, which is running anything beyond XP.  Again, my main examples would be photo-printing kiosks in stores, and similar. "Lowest-common-denominator" certainly seems to apply.
And, agreed that flash drives are incredibly cheap - but I really didn't want to carry 2 around, if I could use a single one.  I have been investigating possibly using a dual-sided implementation, such as:
        http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FPYLHY/
I had seen some references to "hybrid MBR" recently, but they were always accompanied with significant caveats regarding reliability.  If you believe this might be worth pursuing, though, I'm game for trying.  Any pointers on step-by-step guides to result in a drive in the form needed?
    1) Bootable OS X Lion install/recovery partition
    plus
    2) General data partition (I do not care about bootabillity into Windows)

  • Trying to sync from windows to MAC but not near my windows computer?

Hello, I had Firefox Sync set up at work on my work computer (windows). I want to set up sync at home on my MAC. I no longer work at my previous job...so, I have no access to that particular computer. I didn't realize that sync was specific to the device...I thought I could just sign on to Firefox at home and sync but nothing happens when I do. I haven't paired this MAC...don't think I was asked too and can't find directions that work. Is it a MAC to PC issue or am I missing something? Thanks so much for the help.

With the new Sync version used in current Firefox releases you enter the name and password of the Firefox account on each computer to connect to the Sync account.
You can no longer pair a new device by entering a pairing key on a connected device.

  • Can't see Extreme station from mac, but I can from Windows

Hi. I've got an iMac 400 slotloading with OS X 10.2.8 installed.
The version of the AirPort Admin Utility on the mac is 3.1.1. It cannot see the AirPort Extreme station.
My WinXP Pro can see it. It has the AirPort Admin Utility 4.2 installed.
The base station has firmware 5.6. I don't think that the mac 3.1.1 utility can recognize the extreme station any longer because of its firmware. According to the docs, it works with 5.1 firmware.
If I wanted to get the 5.1 firmware and reinstall it, where would I get it? I can't seem to find it in the downloads.
If I install the 5.1 firmware, would my PC admin utiltiy continue to work with the base station?
    Thanks,
    Doug

You only need one computer to configure the Base Station - and since you can easily do this from your PC, you really don't need to be able to do it from your Mac as well. I suggest you stop worrying about this, leave your Base Station running with the current firmware version, and use your PC if you ever need to make a configuration change.
Note that NO Base Station software needs to be installed on the Mac, for the Mac to be able to connect wirelessly to the Base Station. If your Mac is currently unable to establish a wireless connection to the Base Station, you have a different problem - and one that won't be solved by installing the Airport Admin Utility or downgrading firmware on the Base Station. Incidentally - what type of wireless security are you using on the Base Station - WEP or WPA? A base station configured to use WPA security will only be accessible by a Mac running at least MacOS 10.3.

When I'm using my integrated Mic on Leopard everything's fine we can hear me at a few meters. Once I try to use it on Windows, people only ear me if there's a noise > 60db. And I don't know much about Windows and I would like to change to Line In Input.

  • Formatting Mac HDD to work with windows files/applications

I was thinking of partitioning the hardrive and formatting one partition whatever way I would need to in order to use it like a Windows computer, because I really have no use for my Mac, if I cant get it to run many applications that are windows exclusive. However I would need to send for the Tiger startup disk, and I dont want to pay for it unless I'm sure that this is even possible, and I want to know what I am doing
Anyway I dont really know that much about macs, so exactly what do I need, and what do I need to do, for it to work with windows/PC files and applications?
And My Harddrive has a total of 9.5 GB, and only four GB of free space (I dont even have anything on the computer, so I don't know what is taking so much space) is that enough space to do whatever it is i'm talking about?

virtual PC is pretty slow, I wouldn't really recommend it at this point on an old iMac. maybe for really light duty things. Frankly, you're probably better off just selling, donating or getting rid of it and getting a cheap PC. a cheap PC is a cheap PC, and in my opinion very inferior to the mac, but it will run windows much faster.
Or just use it as a mac. A mac can do just about anything a windows box can, and is usually more reliable. Files can be read without problems in most cases. Give it a shot.

  • Ichat works with macs, but can't send/accept invites with pcs

bear with me, still a newbie/read discussions, this is my 1st post. audio ichat ok with mac friend, but ichat menu options won't allow invite audio or video chat with sister using pc, even though i downloaded aim 6.7 in addition to ichat. i have road runner and digital videocam with firewire, sister has comcast with logitech quickcam, she was able to ichat with mac friends. i've read ichat help & discussions, contacted applecare & roadrunner & aol, no luck...
    1) should i uninstall aim6.7?
    2) ichat preference shows camera/mic/bandwidth/but no port option, need to open port 443 with firewall on? how? where?
    3) what info is my query missing?
    4) i'll upgrade to 10.5 + airport express + 20"display soon, will that cause other issues?
    5) is this a repair permissions issue somehow? i've pulled tips on weekly maintenance. my entire family is waiting, i'm at a complete loss...please help.
    thanks, teta bepa

    howdy steve,
good news first. ichat worked a-ok with my mac friend. i have os10.3.9, ichat av2.1.3, panasonic digvidcam w/ firewire. mac friend has os10.4.1, ichat av3.1.8, imace w/ isight. simple as pie, no problem to start ichat, good sound and video, couldn't have been easier. connection doctor info looked fine too, video and audio at 100%. yippee!
this mac friend had previously been able to ichat with my pc sister, not perfect, but they certainly made contact for videochat. as for my contact w/ pc sister, i'm still trying and hoping...
pc sister upgraded her aim to version 6.5.4.16, via comcast.net by the way. i also told her to allow aim6.exe exception in firewall, and directed her to ralphjohnsuk info too. we both shut off our firewalls, as had my mac friend. FINALLY in my buddy menu options, i was able to send videochat invite to my sister. ichat said "sending invite" and "starting videochat" but that's as far as it got. at least the connection doctor did not mention "no response" or failed or anything like that, connection doctor just seemed to wait for audio/video info.
what do you think is going on? it seems we're very close to actual videochat. at least my mac is getting fewer error messages, it's waiting for videochat to start. the even bigger mystery is...how could my mac friend have previously gotten videochat w/ my pc sister, but nothing now?
now we 3 are at wit's end as to how to loop in my pc sister. i truly appreciate any insight you may offer. thanks for your time and expertise. take care.
    teta bepa
(by the way, i'm upgrading to os10.5 and will attempt videochat when i'm wireless w/ airport.)
