Errors downloading updates on my Mac Mini
I am trying to download updates on my MacMini. Every time I try I get a message that says "Mac update cannot be saved you are not connected to the internet." but I am always connected to the internet. Sometimes I get other error messages, but I can't remember what they say. I have a Mac OS X 10.7 and it is trying to download Mac OS X Update Combined version 10.7.3 and Java for OS X 2012-003. I don't know much about computers so layman's terms and detailed instructions would be nice if possible.
Oh, I should mention that I am also having trouble backing up on time machine. Though it works when I hook my external hard drive. A few months ago I was having some issues with my computer so I whiped it clean and I think somewhere in the process things got screwed up. I don't know if any of this has anything to do with why I can't update my computer.

Hi, if you're using Software update, see if there's an update to SWUPD, if so, uncheck everything else & get that sole update first, reboot & try the others.
If you're really at 10.7.2 still, have you tried the direct donload of the big 10.7.3 Combo update?

It's somewhere between almost impossible & impossible to install the wrong EFI Update with all the checks it does!

After i installed updates for my mac mini server, the web services for the server app wont start, it gives an error massage: "Error Reading Settings"
The system logs reads:

undefined method `downcase' for nil:NilClassTo check the local network for some of the common configuration problems, launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll report some local configuration information and then either no errors detected and no changes required, or it'll point to whatever configuration errors or issues it might detect. That doesn't catch everything, but it catches the common errors.
FWIW, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are poor choices for the local network, as VPNs are based on IP routing and IP routing gets tangled when the same subnet is used on both ends of the VPN. 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are near ubiquitous in home networks and coffee shops. -
I bought garage band from the app store and downloaded it to my mac mini. When i try to open a screen comes up explaining i need to down load missing files. I do this but when try to open GB again the same thing keeps happening! Can anyone help.

In similar cases it helped to remove the GarageBand "Preferences" file from the User Library.
Open the folder
your home folder > Library > Preferences
and move the file "com.apple.garageband.plist" to the Desktop.
Then try again to launch GarageBand.

After updated software on mac mini with os x 10.7.5 and restart the mouse pointer after about 30 sec. converted to the rainbow wheel and I can't control the computer. These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
Repeat with this line:

Remember, Steps 1-4 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.

I'v got a Nokia 5230.. I update firmware to v40, ok.. Now i run Ovi suite , i see "7 updates avablie , instal now?" Ok , ok.. Scribble , ... Then i see "Error downloading updates ". In phone the same.. I want instal updates. Please help Very sorry for my bad English..Hi! I have the same problem. When I try to update it just gives the the message "Something's gone wrong" .....or "Cannot connect to service" ...although my connection seems to be fine? Probably Nokia's update server? ....I also have a 5230 (It's been a bit buggy lately so I re-installed the firmware v40).

Trying to download Mountain Lion on Mac Mini currently running Lion 10.7.4. Computer is set to never sleep. When I check progress it says "waiting" under purchases on App store. What does this mean? Way too long to still be waiting. HELP
In the app store where it says waiting, do you get the option to "resume"?

HELP - Dial Up Download Question from a Mac Mini Tiger OS X 10.4.6 Newbee??
There are hugh download files (133 Mb for 10.4.7 for example) that appeared when I ran Software update the first day I got my Mini. This would require 10 to 12 hours download on my Juno account. One solution I saw in these forums was to have a neighbor with High Speed connection download and burn a disc. My NEWBEE question is... Can you go to the Apple OS X download page and successfully download the 10.4.7 update (and others) using a Windows machine with Windows software?? Then have that Windows PC burn a disc that can transfer the update to my Mini?? I'm breaking new ground in my neighborhood and appear to be the only one with a Mac. We have NO APPLE STORE/OUTLET within a four hour drive, therefore your input that a PC can burn the disc is the best alternative I have. BUT what do you mean by a "hybrid" data CD? All products were correctly licensed and working fine before upgrading to Mavericks and I've not had any issues. I tried to run the updates today and got the error.First time I read this I thought it was a joke, but it really works ! Adobe should be very very ashamed !!!

Mountain lion error message (fail to restart Mac mini for installation)

I successfully downloaded mountain lion and attempted to install it several times on my Mac mini; however, it gives an error message when it wants to restart computer for installation purposes. The error message reads "An error occured while preparing the installation. Try running the application again." Well, I did as instructed several times to no avail. Is there anybody to help me out. Graphic problems since 10.7.2 update on new mac mini. Is there a fix?
Updated to 10.7.2 on 2011 Mac Mini. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. 8GB Ram. Old 23" cinema display using hdmi adapter, usb relay not plugged in for use of usb ports on display.
Ever since update, response of apps is really slow and i get a lot of graphical errors (screen junk) at certain times. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. It does seem worse in safari though. It also happens to the items in the doc and puts weird boxes behing the icons, etc. I attached a screenshot of a representation of what is happening graphically.
Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or if there is a fix that anyone has found.

Mac Mini is currently at the authorized repair shop, but it's frustrating because their diagnostic tests are showing that the graphics card is fine. I brought in my 23" cinema display for them to connect it to it to see if that may be the problem when it's connected.
Any one else have an original 23" apple cinema display hooked up to their 2011 mac mini and experiencing any problems? It worked flawlessly with this display up until the 10.7.2 update. -
Upgraded old Mac mini (from 10.4 to 10.6) PowerPC G4 Processor, downloaded latest version of Firefox and ran installer, got a dialogue box that said 'not compatible with this architecture', now I don't have Firefox at all, and it is my preferred browser.

I received the update notice from system preferences, so I followed the usual drill, accepting recommended update/downloads and restarting - one of those being an iTunes update.
Once the mini was restarted I went to my iTunes movie library to watch a movie and discovered that ALL movies (digital downloads and iTunes purchases) as well as my entire music library had been deleted. This has NEVER happened with previous updates.
How can I restore/find my files? They do not seem to be in the user location and I tried changing where iTunes looks for the music and movie files but that didn't work.
I'm so frustrated, there were over 11,000 music files and over 30 movies that seem to have been deleted.
Any help or suggestions to find the missing files is much appreciated!!!I'd fisrt go to spotlight and search for .m4a and/or .mp3 files.

ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.

Although your PC works OK Macs can be sensitive to DNS settings. Here is a MacWorld DNS Troubleshooting article that explains the issue and below is how to fix it.

3. Click Advanced
4. Click DNS tab
5. Click + sign
6. Add 208.67.222.222
7. Click + sign
8. Add 208.67.220.220
9. Click OK.
10. Exit System Preferences
11. Try out your MBP and report what happened.
