Errors on external drive (upgrading)

The story so far...:
I have a WD MyBook Studio 2TB external HDD, which I have setup in a RAID1 configuration. I am now starting to outgrow the 1TB capacity. I am going to upgrade the two HDDs eventually, but wanted to make a temporary solution until I do. In the meantime I wanted to limit the space allocated for Time Machine) I tried to setup a partition for Time Machine (150GB, if anyone's curious). I messed something up while doing this, so ended up making a partition that matched the 350GB free space on the HDD (well done me). Next step was to remove the new partition, extend the existing partition a bit, and then create a new partition again for Time Machine in the remaining free space. This didn't work to plan, as I could delete the errant partition, but I am now unable to make new partitions. Disk Utility gives me a number of errors, including "incorrect number of directory hard links", and ultimately can't create new partitions.
I guess my question is this: if I upgrade my HDDs one at a time, rebuilding the RAID1 each time, will I transfer the errors to the new drives?

Hi, can't tell.
Your best bet is likely DiskWarrior.

Upgrading should not damage your content, however, it is strongly recommended that you make a current backup on an external drive just in case something goes wrong.  I have never had to use a restore but always have a backup just in case.

  • Error when upgrading Aperture library on an external drive

I have a MacBook Pro and am in the process of upgrading to Aperture 3. When Aperture wants to upgrade the existing Aperture library, it fails saying that there is insufficient memory. (My hard drive is very full). I have copied the Aperture library across to a WD external drive and have held down "Option" key when launching Aperture 3 so that I could select the library on the external drive as the preferred library. That went ok. Then when Aperture 3 was some way through upgrading the library on the external drive, it suddenly stopped and gave me this message.
"There was an error creating a library at the path “/Volumes/External Drive/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. The library could not be created because the file system of the destination volume is unsupported."
The library also seems to have disappeared off the external drive.
Any ideas on what I did wrong?

    Hi Paul DT;
In addition to the suggestions that Allen gave you I would also suggest that once you increase the free space on your internal disk drive that you reboot with install DVD and repair the disk using Disk Utility.
When you run the free space down that can greatly increase the chances of corrupting the directory on that disk. If you have any corruption in the directory that cause all kinds of strange problems for you until you repair it.

  • Problem with project after upgrading to 10.1 and moving libraties to external drive

I need to make some updates to a project I created over a year ago prior to upgrading to 10.1.  Also since creating, I moved my Final Cut Libraries off to an external drive.  The only about 25% of the clips in the project appear to be linked to the original media even though all appear to be in the Original Media folder.  I have tried as a test to put the original video files into a folder outside of any FCP files and used that to use the "Relink Media" function under "Edit"  The attached link to a pdf doc shows the error message I get.  I have no idea how to proceed from here to recover this important project.

I copied the Original Media folder to a new location and then relinked to the new folder.  The process ran without error.  However that did not fix the problem.  The clip content isn't there for 80% of the clips.  The system was rendering in the background for hours.  I went to bed.  When I got up and checked using the view background tasks it stalled at some point.  I tried exporting the XML and importing into a new library.  I got a waring message about an unrecognized cross dissolve transition.  When I opened the project in the new library the time line looked exactly the same and it behaved exactly as the original project. Thoughts?

  • How to upgrade a Library on an external drive created in a previous version of aperture so I can re-import it from the external drive into Aperture 3.5.1 on my MBP ?

I have exported earlier Projects [which were created in Aperture 3.4.5] to an external hard drive. Now I wish to reimport them into Aperture 3.5.1 - which I use after having upgraded to Mavericks - but am given an error message saying I can’t reimport because the external drive is storing a Library created by an earlier version of Aperture than I’m using now. It tells me to upgrade that externally stored Library.
The Question - one can only upgrade a Library on one’s computer, not on the external drive. How can I upgrade it if I can’t get it back into Aperture [3.5.1] on my MacBookPro in the first place ?
    Thank  you
    Bob

The Question - one can only upgrade a Library on one’s computer, not on the external drive. How can I upgrade it if I can’t get it back into Aperture [3.5.1] on my MacBookPro in the first place ?
You can upgrade the library on the external drive. Connect your external drive to your computer.
Then select the library with the exported projects on the external drive and double-click it to open it in Aperture. This will upgrade the library to Aperture 3.5.1.  Since upgrading can sometimes be problematic, I recommend to make a backup copy of the library before you try to upgrade the library.
After that you should be able to merge the library into your main library using File > Import.

  • Errors on external USB drive

I'm trying to track down the cause of failed backups to a brand-new 300Gb Seagate drive in a external USB <-> SATA enclosure.
I observe these errors in Retrospects verification phase.
    These errors could
    - be 10.4.6 not playing well with external USB drives - that the new drive is essentially DOA
    - that the enclosure is a dud.
    - reflect an inability on Retrospect's part (e.g. unable to work properly with USB drives on 10.4.6)
I've asked on the EMC Retrospect forum for their take on this, buts that's a very slow forum...
Any pointers are welcome. I strongly prefer not to have to buy commercial solutions; after all, the "fix" may be to ask the supplier to take his drive back and refund me and I wouldn't want to spend if that's the case. Command-line solutions are fine.
The data can be correctly backed up to another external drive (via Firewire) so its not the source data. Its not the specific USB port: tried other ports, etc. At one point there were some errors reported by Disk Utility, but I've repaired these and it now claims all is well.
Dual G5/2Ghz/4GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ExternalUSB enclosure; 300Gb Seagate SATA drive

I see my question is so popular, I'm left composing a soliloquy... :-/
Anyway, an upgrade to OS X 10.4.7 (from 10.4.6) seems to have put this right, after a lot of different testing exercises and reading. At least for the first time in many attempts I've been able to run a sizeable backup using Retrospect without the verification pass yielding hundreds of errors.
It would seem, at least for Retropsect users, that OS X 10.4.6 needs to be avoided if you intend backing up to an external USB drive--?

I have a MacBook pro version 10.6.7 with snow leopard. After an scheduled software upgrade I could not open Quicken (It said it could not open the files). Now I can only open it if I have my external drive on. Can you help?
All the information that I had input on Quicken is gone. I have to have the external hard drive that I use to back up to be able to use quicken now. It is as if it was erased from the laptop hardrive

Try repairing permissions. My favorite way is with a utility called AppleJack. Info and download here. It's free. It only works when you boot in Single User Mode. When restarting or booting, hold down the Command key and S keys.
You will get a very different startup screen that looks like the Terminal app has hijacked the screen. Just let the lines of text scroll by. When that happens you will get a text entry prompt. Type in "AppleJack" without the quotation marks.
A DOS looking menu will appear. Choose 1 or d to run Disk Repair. If you get a message that Disk Repair found and corrected errors, run it again. Repeat until you get the "your disk appears to be ok" message. This rarely happens with my experience, though. This does the same thing as as booting from an external drive and running Disk Utility's repair. Only, no external drive is required!
Next, choose 2 or p to repair disk permissions. This will take a little while. AppleJack warns that it will take up to an half hour to run repair permissions. It'n never taken more than about ten minutes for my MacBook Pro.
As permissions are repaired, you will see each repair scroll on the screen. When done, the menu returns, choose q to quit. Then at the prompt, enter "exit" without the quotes. Your MacBook Pro should restart into Mac OS normally after this.
    Hope this helps.

  • Vista hangs after upgrade to 1.1 when attaching external drive

I am running Vista Home Premium and upgraded today to LR 1.1. When I plugged in my external USB-drive (where the photos and catalog reside) the whole Vista system got stuck. Power button + reboot. Several times with different external USB drives. Then I noticed the small icon (Adobe Photo downloader) in the system tray and after I removed that from the startup with MSCONFIG I was able to use the external drives.
My system is a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 2GB RAM.
Has anybody else experienced the same problem? Any idea why that happens?

After Upgrading to 1.21 (NSS6000), Backup Exec 12.5 produced another error when trying to bring up a Backup-To-Disk-Folder: "Unable to create new backup folder. Access denied".

I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import menu and nothing has changed.  I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card.  Any thoughts?

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

  • External drive error, does not mount: "Partition map check failed because no slices were found"

    Hardware: MacBook late 2009 (2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM 250GB HDD) running 10.9.4, Hackintosh MacPro (3.29Ghz i3 16GB RAM 1TB HDD) running 10.9.4, external 3 TB Seagate Backup+ drive
As you can can see from the screenshot below,
The external drive was initially plugged in a Netgear WNDR4500 router by USB to be used as NAS. I was in the middle of updating the firmware when there was a power outage. Upon reboot, the drive no longer mounts, whatever it is plugged in (router, Mac, PC, etc.).
I ran DiskUtility on the partition map and volume, same errors. Here's an what I see:
As you can see above, the "Mount" icon is greyed out and I get the error message "Partition map check failed because no slices were found". If I select "the Archive" partition, the "Mount" icon is not greyed out but clicking it doesn't do anything. My HDD is basically unreadable.
I issued a few Terminal commands to see what was the problem, here are the results:
    What can I do?
Currently running analysis on TestDisk and it is 50% after 48hrs. Need some help!

@ Allan Eckert: Unfortunately, reformatting is out of the question, I have 5 years of work on this!
@ Loner T: Yes, the firmware did successfully upgrade after router reboot and a bit of troubleshoot.
Thanks for the quick replies. Keep 'em coming!

  • Disk space error when trying to access iPhoto library on external drive

My iPhoto photos are stored on an external drive, which I've be accessing regularly on my old Macbook.  I upgraded to a newer (but used) Macbook that has Yosemite installed and, therefore, Photos.  When I try to access my iPhoto library on the external drive, I get an error that there is not enough disk space.  There is a lot of disk space on the new Mac.  The eternal drive is getting full, but I deleted a lot of large files and there should be enough space on there now.
    Any ideas?
    I'm stumped!

What format is that external drive?

  • Errors when transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive.

    Hello,
I need some help transferring my Time Machine backup to an external drive. Let me explain what happened.
I have a Mac OSX Mountain Lion that was upgraded to Mavericks when the upgrade came out. Prior to upgrading, I've been backing up  WD Passport Mac with the proprietary software "WD Unlocker on it". It worked flawlessly but after upgrading to Mavericks, I decided to backup and noticed that once i inserted the WD Passport, my screen will flicker, windows will close and reappear.
I decided to read up on this and discovered that Mavericks is not compatible with the "WD Unlocker " program on the Passport drive. Since I already have a backup in place, i decided to restore my computer to factory settings and when I attached the Passport drive with my backup on it, My device will see the backup but it will keep spinning for hours without restoring my backup. I decided to read further on this and I got the same Mavericks compatibility conclusion.
I then copied my entire backups.backupdb folder to my Mac desktop and formatted my WD Passport external drive and got rid of the proprietary software "WD Unlocker".. Once this was completed, I then tried to copy my backups.backupdb folder to my external drive within finder. Each time i tried, i get error messages and permission messages. Even when i changed the permission on the backups.backupdb folder to read & write for everyone, i still get the permissions error.
Please helppppp. I have over 500gb of vital data in my backup.
    Thank you.

Since you don't really have a question, I will give you a very broad information source for the next time you have a Time Machine question.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

  • I keep getting error msg. 4 my lacie external drive that it unexpectedly quit. It then proceeds to go away and reappear again a ffew

    Hi All,
Since I upgraded to ML, I keep getting error msg. 4 my lacie external drive that it unexpectedly quit. It then proceeds to go away and reappear again a few mins. will appear. It also mentions this ejection could destroy my data. I've already updated the Driver to the most current one ta LaCie had for my 500 GB Rikki External. That didn't help. I also tried Disk Utility to repair permissions No Help! Suggestions?

That would be highly unusual, since the Apple ID is almost always the email address, unless it's changed later, and normally has to be unique to set up a new Apple ID. In any case, if you have two Apple IDs (or more), you probably need to authorize the computer using both.
    Regards.

  • I upgraded to Snow Leopard on an external drive.  how do I reconnect to my old data?

I upgraded my Mac Mini from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  My old system is on the internal drive and the new OS is on a 500GB external hard drive plugged in via firewire. I made the mistake of not selecting for the install to include data from other volumes.  Now I cannot find how to include that data from the old volume. In fact, the new iTunes does not even see my iTunes library installed on the same volume.  iTunes does not even detect when I plug in my iPad.  Please point me in the write direction.  there is no useful info in the manuals.
    thanks,
    Len

Thanks John, that was it.  To tell the truth, the name Migration Assistant finally came back to me even before I saw your message, but that was pure luck.  I was disappointed that searching on my Mac and the Apple support site did not bring up that term.  Even having found the tool, the creators had apparently not thought of migrating from the another drive on the same computer.  Pretty big oversight to me.  Luckily I've been using Time Machine on another external drive and that option was available and worked.
Thanks again because if I had not thought that name and you had not responded, I would be veeeeerrry frustrated.

  • Should I upgrade the internal hdd on my 2008 8.1 iMac or use an external drive?

I have an external hdd right now it is a 500gb go seagate goflex with a number of iTunes folders that I put on from my windows pc. I just received this 2008 2.4ghz core 2 duo 8.1 iMac and tried to import the files. The internal hdd is only 250gb so they would not fit, when I tried to get iTunes to run from the external drive it would but I would have to manually open each artist then album then song I wanted in the Finder for it to play. The songs do not show up automatically in iTunes, even though I think I followed all of the instructions for external hdd support. I was going to buy a new iMac and have the genius set it up, but now I think I am going to upgrade the RAM myself and am deciding wether or not I should also replace the internal hdd to 2TB or just get an external hdd so when I get a new iMac, maybe next year, I could still use it. However, I don't want to get another, larger external hdd if I'm going to have a hard time transferring all of my media to iTunes. Can I pay to have an apple genius do this at the store? I just upgraded the operating system to Snow Leopard and am waiting to upgrade RAM before moving to Mountain Lion. I just want my iTunes to sync up, at this point I will do just about anything, short of buying a new Mac. Thanks for any help.

You can keep your iTunes collection on an external drive.  You can also keep just bulky items that you may not want to see often such as movies and just keep smaller items on the internal drive.  This split option is more tricky but there are several ways to do it.
If all you have is a modest music collection, you can manage with an internal drive.  Most modern media collections with huge movies files fast outpace even larger internal hard drives and you will have to resort to an external drive.  Your computer dating from 2008 is (according to Apple's coproration standards) on its way to becoming a museum piece (hey, I still use a 10 year old computer, but Apple gave up hope for me years ago).  I would not upgrade the internal drive.   That will cost you a lot  and be tricky to take with you to your next computer. An external drive you can just plug into a new computer.
Some of the issues you are encountering are because you do not yet know how to properly manage and transfer iTunes files.  We can help you, or you can pay somebody a lot of money to do this for you on a regular basis.
Your GoFlex drive was used with Windows. Macs and Windows use different drive formats.  If you are now using Mac-only then you will need to reformat the drive (you will need to store all those files elsewhere while you are doing this).
Do not buy just one external drive.  When that drive fails (oh, and believe me, it will) your whole collection will be lost.  Some of it you may be able to download again from Apple, but Apple does not "store" your iTunes collection, it is up to you to ensure its safety.
