  • HT3275 Can Time Machine back up more than one computer without overwriting one of the backups?

I was using Time Machine to back up files from my G5 onto an external drive. I now want to use the same drive to back up my laptop with Time Machine. If I set it up for that, will it overwrite the backup files from the G5?

If I set it up for that, will it overwrite the backup files from the G5?
No, Time Machine will create a new backup file for the laptop and automatically keep backups separate for the G5 and the laptop.
This assumes that you still have plenty of space on the external hard drive to backup the laptop.

  • Can you restore a time machine back-up more than once?

    Hi,
About a week ago I tried restoring an old time machine backup to check that it worked - and it did. I now want to restore that same backup again. It's still there on the external drive that it was backed up onto, but no longer has a time stamp associated with it, and it no longer allows me o restore it. Any help would be appreciate d.

I was not aware that such a limitation existed.  Try this:  (disable Time machine temporarily
Click on the Time Macine HDD, and open ''Backups. backupdb' folder.  You then might see another folder with you name on it.  Open that folder which should show you a series of folders with a series of dates.  See EX.
Select the folder with the date where the data that you want to retrieve resides.  Open that folder and keep opening folders until you get to the item you wish to restore.  Drag the item to your desk top.
    Ciao.

  • Can Time Machine backups for more than one Mac be sent to the same external hard drive?

It's pretty straightforward, really.  We have two Macs, both running Mountain Lion.  Can we use the same external hard drive for Time Machine backups of both?

It would be best to partition the HDD - one volume for each Mac (you cannot partition a Time Capsule).
Note that by doing so, you will lose both backups should the drive fail.

  • Error: Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • Error: An attribute cannot appear more than once in the same start tag

    Hi Everyone,
when i run the page sometimes it works fine but sometimes it throws Compilation Error as below.
"Error(502,1224): file:/C:/Jdeveloper/jdevhome/jdev/myhtml/OA_HTML/fwk/t/Session_2055663493/region1.uix<Line 502, Column 1224>: XML-20124: (Fatal Error) An attribute cannot appear more than once in the same start tag."
And i delete the particular file from the path and run the page so this time it works fine.
But later after sometime i get the same error but the session number will be changed, then again i need to delete it and run.
What can be the permanent solution for this issue?
Plz let me know any suggetions.
    Thanks.

Seems like the mdl file is corrupted or was not generated correctly.
Can you try to create the mdl file again and then try the import ?
If it doesn't work then try contacting Oracle Support.

  • Time machine wont start?

Time machine wont start in my computer after I double click on the icon. There is no error message -- seems to ignore me completely.
Any tools to find out what is going on?

Not sure what happened, but re-booting fixed the problem.

  • My HD is shrinking/ Time Machine wont back up

So my Macbook pro has been running really slowly lately, like getting progressively worse, and now the external hard drive that I back up to time machine is spinning all the time, Time Machine wont back up, it just says "Calculating changes" and now I noticed that I have 3 less gigs on my internal HD although I have written nothing to it today. The external HD works fine other wise, I can move files manually to and from it, but I'm getting really freaked out that I maybe have a virus or something, although I have never know anyone whos had one on a mac. I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow, but I need to work on my machine now. I my main log in got so slow yesterday that it was unusable, so I created a second log in which work much faster last night, but now seems to be slowing down too. Oh, my right fan has been noisey for some time too, and my system runs at 140-160 degrees, which I have read is fairly normal, although it is often hot to the touch. Any Ideas??!?!

That sounds like something corrupted on your internal HD. Verify it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). As noted there, if that shows errors, you'll have to repair it, per the yellow box there.

Was that just an experiment, or are you keeping other data there, in the same partition as your Time Machine backups? If so, that's not a good idea. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

I have a TON of art/photos on this computer. I'm wondering if backing my hard drive up with time machine gains me more space and processing speed-or if it only slows my computer down? is it better to house my files on a seperate drive from the drive i am using for backing up with time machine?

Just to add a little, Time Machine is not a storage drive. Backups on there are not in a form you can use as you would from your normal internal. If you delete your pics etc. after backup, they won't be backed up on subsequent runs, and will eventually be lost when the TM drive gets near full and starts deleting the oldest backups. Have a read of Pondini's TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
To do what you want, you need another drive to which you can simply copy your pics etc and open from there while booted to your internal. (this is a basic storage drive)
The storage drive can then also be backed up to TM (provided the TM disc is big enough).

  • Time Machine wont backup

I bought an external hard drive and put files from my old computer on it before I bought my iMac. Now I want to use it for backing up my iMac but Time Machine wont backup to it without erasing the contents. Is there a way around this? Or will I have to buy a new EHD? Or is there a way to backup to cyberspace?
    Thanks

The drive is probably set up with the MBR (Master Boot Record) partition map, that Windoze uses. To use it for TM you must completely reformat it, which will erase it. If you have enough space (or can borrow another external temporarily), you can copy the data off, reformat it, then copy the data back.
TM works best with it's own, exclusive space, so you should partition the drive anyway. If you're going to use the other data with a PC, make the other partition MS-DOS (FAT).

  • AGP SAWTOOTH wont see more than 896mb RAM

It wont see more than 896mb of RAM in any combination of the 4 slots. And whats more, if I put four 256mb chips in, it will only see 512mb. So I currently have 3x256 and 1x128...
This is true with OS 9.1, 10.3 and 10.4...
    Any ideas? thx

Hello! Have you checked to see if all the ram is the same spec. i have 4 512 meg pc133 sticks in my Sawtooth and it shows 2 gig of ram. OS 9 will only recognize 1.5 gigs as I understand it. I think that OSX has the ability to "lock out" portions of memory that may be out of spec. Tom

I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

  • What items do you delete from backup on time machine to make more space available

What items do you delete from back up on time machine to make more space?

There's no need to do that unless Time Machine has reported a Disk Full alert. In this case you can:
    1. Delete older entries using the Time Machine application to free up sufficient space.
    2. Get a new and larger Time Machine backup drive to replace the old one.
    3. Erase the backup drive and start over.
