Errrrrrrggggg MULTIPLEXOR ERRORS??

Well first of all I have iDVD 7.0.4 and I am tried of beating my head against the wall. After many attempts to create and burn my project to a DVD WITHOUT getting a multiplexor error in the last 15 minutes after encoding menus, video, and audio for 3 hours I finally burned my project to a DVD! Don't know what I did differently on this one versus the other ones that failed but I got it done. Then after a review of my project I noticed a few minor things (most wouldn't have noticed it but I did because I made it) that annoyed me, so I made a few changes. Then I went to re-burn the project again and I got another MULTIPLEXOR ERROR at the end!! ERRGGGGG!!!! I have no earthly idea what I am doing wrong. I mean is this software buggy or what?
When I first created a project I actually, without even knowing what I was exactly doing, created a DVD with some video clips I had. I used one of the canned themes, added music, titles, etc. I was amazed I actually did it! So, I took on a different project and just duplicated the same procedures I used with my first successful try, and it's with this one I repeatedly get the dreaded "MULTIPLEXOR ERROR" at the end. I am so sick of it and have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Ok, I just spent about 40 hours going thru this myself after many happy DVD creations.. I've also used dashes "-" and ampersands "&" many times in my chapter markers with no problem at all.
The odd thing is when I exported the video from FCE 4 w/o chapter markers it all worked. I then tried just numbered markers and still had problems. I then made a new FCE project and imported that file just in case the project or sequence was corrupt. Then I made new chapter markers with the dashes in the names and exported that with the markers. That file worked without problems.
I believe even though it worked with no markers that the direct cause was not the markers but problems in the video or audio that IDVD had a hard time dealing with and the added work of handling the chapter markers just was the straw that broke it. Exporting the video w/o markers and reimporting it somehow smoothed over whatever was causing the problem. Also I think that with errors it's a C#$p shoot as to how the errors are exported so sometimes if you change a marker's name and export the video and it works it may lead you to believe that was what fixed it when it really was how the error exported. I should note that the video was from VHS and old and had a lot of problems to begin with.

Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.

as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
B. Location of Chapters
• Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
• Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)
Important when from iMovie HD6 or previous - Now also observed when using FCE 4

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.

Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
Summary - What to try
1. Chapters
• Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
• No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
• No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
3. Safe re-boot
4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
SDMacuser adds to this
• On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
7. Trash iDVD pref. file
8. Make a new iDVD project
9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

Error #-1309, Multiplexor Error

I am trying to create a wedding reception DVD in iDVD. I make home videos like this in iDVD all the time and I never have any issues. I edit the wedding in Final Cut and then export it to QuickTime. Next I create the menu in iDVD and add the QuickTime file. Then I save it as a disc image. Usually, it takes about an hour or two and then it says Disc Image Created Successfully. Instead, it is taking about 5 hours and then when it gets to the very end, it says:
"Burning Finished - Errors were found during the burning process - The error #-1309 was reported"
and then I click okay and it says:
"Multiplexor Error - There was a problem during multiplexing/burning"
What does this mean? How do I fix it. I tried calling technical support and they were useless. Like I said, I have done this numerous times before and it usually works every time. The video is an an hour and 10 minutes and I know that anything over an hour has a harder time rendering, but usually I just change the settings to Best Quality and it works fine. Not this time. I tried deleting everything, even the Quick Time file and starting over, but it happens eveytime.
Any help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks!

Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...

Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.

Multiplexor Error in iDVD '09

I know this question has been asked a myriad of times so I apologize, but I haven't seen a definitive answer, that works for me yet.
iDVD goes through the entire action of processing my HD movie project. Once completed, it begins to multiplex at which time it tells me I have a Multiplexer error and my disc cannot be completed but my disc is fine and still usable.
*I dumped my prefs. I burned the DVD at 1x speed using high quality (Maxell and SONY) DVD-Rs. I un-encoded the assets and then re-encoded them. I turned off all other running apps. I re-created my self-contained HD video files. I ensured I had plenty of hard drive space.*
Everything so far points to a app bug that needs a desperate fix.
Does anyone have an 'official' support response from Apple regarding this issue that seems to plague so many people? We honestly can't ALL have the same file woes with our content that we are trying to author.

This may hopefully help:
I was using the Sunflower template for a project and MP error would be coughed up at the last stages of the burn. Turns out that the snippets of video i had in the sunflower dropzones were well beyond 7 minutes. See KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2178
By clicking on the dropzone you can then adjust the length the snippet will play for; I play it safe and set it for no more than 2 minutes.
While trivial this bears asking: you do have enough HD space when burning?
Also, until you get the problem resolved why not burn as a disk image instead of using physical DVDs? Eventhough iDVD indicates the DVD can still be used, you don't risk making a coaster or having to insert a DVD each time.

Multiplexor/Burn errors

Since I can't imagine that I am the only one that experienced this problem I thought I would post this small piece of advice to anyone who is receiving the following error message when attempting to burn a DVD in iDVD 6.
Multiplexor Error
There was a problem during multiplexing/burning.
While I realize there may be a multitude of reasons for getting this error message, my solution was twofold:
1) Saving the project as a Disc Image and using Disc Utility to burn the DVD and selecting a slower burn speed. iDVD doesn’t allow this.
2) Buying 8x or slower DVD-Rs. For some reason, 16x discs are not compatible, at least with my two Power Macs (single 1.8, dual 2.0).
First save your project as a Disk Image. Then exit iDVD and double click on the .img file to mount it. Open Disk Utility (found in the Applications folder, under Utilities.). The .img file you mounted should appear in the left-hand column. Highlight it by clicking once which will activate the burn button above. Click this Burn button. Insert a 8x (or slower) blank DVD-R. Click on the blue triangle button in the upper-right to display advanced options. Select a slower burn speed, perhaps 4x. Click Burn.
Like I said, this is just what worked for me. Good luck.

You can get this error by trying to burn a DVD too fast. Slow it down, using a disk image and Toast or Disk Utility.
Did you try Flash's first suggestion?:
1) Saving the project as a Disc Image and using Disc Utility to burn the DVD and selecting a slower burn speed. iDVD doesn’t allow this.
I tried making a "diskimage" using disk utility, and the one step in IDVD did not recognize it at all.
If you have a disk image, just burn a DVD. Forget OneStep in iDVD.

"device failed to respond properly" error

I have a mac mini sans dvd burner. Thus, I was happy to get a Plextor PX-740UF dvd burner in the mail. The fun stopped once I tried to burn a dvd. I have gone through 10 dvd's so far with no luck. I have been reading this forum trying to find a solution. I have tried Verbatim DVD-R lately. I saved a disc image and tried to burn it with the disk utility. Everytime I get the following error: Unable to burn "name.img" - the device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
iDVD keeps giving me a multiplexor error. Nonetheless, I don't understand the error from disk utility. Why or how could a device fail to respond? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Error message: Error During Rendering / Encoding

I have used iDVD in the past without problems on my macbook pro. Now it seems there is no way to make it work! I get this error everytime: "Error During Rendering/Encoding" the error is in the menu/slideshows, but I see that it never gets past the menu item on the list of things it is working on. I have tried going to the older menus and no luck. It says that the burning process has been cancelled. Any ideas?????

I was having the same problem yesterday and researched all the solutions in the Forum. I wasn't experiencing the problem with burning to a disc, because I was trying to burn a disc image, so the variable of "better" versus "best" disc wasn't a factor. I did three simple things that I read about, after I tried four times and received the "Multiplexor Error" thing. One, I deleted encoded assets (Advanced > Delete Encoded Assets). Two, I trashed the iDVD preference file (home > library > preferences > com.apple.iDVD.plist), but only after I closed the iDVD application. Three, and maybe this stupid little glitchy thing made a difference, I deleted from the title and scene headings all characters other than letters of the alphabet and numbers. I have a few "&"'s and "/"s in there and maybe a few other little lazy short-cut things. Sort of a Microsoft thing, but maybe that was the trick. So, this morning the Disc Image was created, I've burned several DVD's (Magnavox DVD-R), they work on my Sony Blu-Ray player and all is happyland today.

Error message when attempting to burn idvd project

please help. I have recently created several movies from vhs with no problems in idvd, the latest one is giving me problems though.
i created the movie in imovie and shared it with idvd (no problems) used the same exact theme as the other two movies (made sure there were no error messages in any of the menus) and clicked burn. Everything appears to encode properly, but i get an error message in the burn stage and need to force quit to exit idvd. after three attempts i now also get a "multiplexor" error.
I tried to make a burn disc with a small file to see if the superdrive is functioning properly and it seemed to take forever (never happened before)
Any ideas? I'm trying to get this done before Christmas.

alright, i added new ram, so i am running 2 gigs now, tried again...failed. i get all the way to burn and a popup comes up saying burning finished errors found during the burning process, i click ok and the burning wheel is still turning and i need to force quit to get out of idvd. i might go crazy, so any help is appreciated.

Cannot create disk image iDvd 7.1.2 (multiplex error)

I'm at my wits end and extremely disappointed.
Basically, I've gone through the threads that I can find, I'm down to importing a basic movie directly into iDvd. No menus. No options enabled (that I'm aware of).
When I go through the iDvd process of creating a disk image all goes smoothy until the very end when I get a multiplexor error (no error code or text saying why).
Extremely frustrating. This is on a new Macbook Pro running 10.7.2. I don't have problems with my other Apple systems, just this new one. Perhaps Apple would like to take it back??

2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutely needed.
e.g. external USB/USB2 hard disks, other FW hard disks etc.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.

Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
Summary - What to try
1. Chapters
• Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
• No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
• No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
3. Safe re-boot
4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
SDMacuser adds to this
• On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
7. Trash iDVD pref. file
8. Make a new iDVD project
9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

'Burning to file' hits multiplexing error

All the discussions about media type become moot when no media are involved. I 'burned' to a disk image and just before the end (5.5 hours of processing) it announces multiplexor error. The disk that was to hold the image is mounted over the network using afp and runs fast enough to play video across the net. The disk has 38Gb of space available and the project file is 3Gb. The project is two videos under an iDVD08 theme with a jpg dropped into the top level menu dropzone. very simple. i havent played with the videos or anything like that. According to ffmpegX the videos are AVI, mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x336, with audio of mp3, 48000Hz, stereo, 160kb/s. Any suggestions ?

I tried out this seemingly strange idea of DVD burning spped even when writing to a file. I am still using the network disk. The sppeds on offer where 1,2,4,8,Max - instead of Max i selected x2.
I got the same result. Tried again with best performance encoding as well (38 mins instead of 5 hours) and got same multiplexer error.
i will continue clearing space on the local disk so i can try that out.

IDVD Multiplexer error # -536870198

I have been running a series of movies with slide shows at the end. All seems well in iMovie 5 but when going to iDVD 5 and doing the burn, it encodes assets, renders movie and audio. Almost immediately after it goes in to burn mode you hear the DVD spin up, slowdown, then stop. Error message appears saying "Burnung finished. Errors were found during process. I click the disclosure arrow and get the error code # -536870198 - Multiplexer error. Problem during Multiplex/Burning. Anyone have an idea what that code means and how to fix it?

I have been suffering like most on this discussion with multiplexing errors. The only thing I can add is something I haven't come across in reading thus far. System profiler says my superdrive supports DVD+R, but that type of media was the source of my problem. Interestingly, I burned 3 copies of a movie onto these type of discs, and that's when I began to get the multiplexor errors. I tried most everything in these discussions to no avail, and then decided to change the dvd media, just in case. I used Maxell DVD-R discs, and it finally worked.
My point is: even though my superdrive should be able to use DVD+R media, it didn't. If you're in a similar situation, switch to DVD-R and hopefully, this will save you time, money and headaches

IDVD can't create disc image

I posted this in the iDVD forum and it was suggested that I also post it here, since its an FCP movie.
(I use Final Cut Studio 5) Here is my iDVD post:
(I have searched iDVD for solutions and have tried all i could find, as you'll read below, but still nothing worked for me, .....)
I made 3 movies in Final Cut, exported them as stand alone movies. (This is the way I have done it in the past)... one is 43 minutes 16:9, one is 43 minutes letterboxed, other is 9 minutes 4:3. They had chapter markers in them.
Created an iDVD project, widescreen format. Added the movies ( both by dragging and dropping and by 'add movie' command) and created a slideshow, with added audio.
I 'Save as disc image' so i can burn several copies. This I have done a lot of times, in the past.
Since Friday last, every attempt has given me an error: Multiplexor Error ...There was an error during muxing preparation (Project conversion) is the most common one. (I don't know how to access Terminal for more details)
I have tried:
• I first encoded at Professional setting .... error message
• changed the encoding to High (to fit all three movies) ... read here that the Multiplexor error was due to the app not calculating the size right ... same error
• removed the plist ... same
• moved files off my hard drive for more space ... same result
• removed the letterboxed movie to decrease size: same error
• chapters: idvd did not recognize the FCP chapters (never had this problem before) so added ones in iDVD ... same error
• removed idvd chapters... same result
• went back to FCP and removed the chapters and re-exported the movies .. same result
• change encoding to Best Performance (only 2 movies and slideshow now) ... same result
• changed the theme ... same
• removed the theme's audio... same result
• reinstalled idvd ... same
• brought the movies into iMovie, added chapters and exported (as QT movie to DV stream) ... same error, and the chapters disappeared again
• saved the dvdproject in the Documents folder on my hard drive (thought this would do the trick as it had been on an external) ... same error
I don't know what's left to try!!
I'm doing all the things that I used to do but am having no positive results . The only thing that I have changed since the last dvd I made (a year ago) is upgrade to Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Can anyone help me ... please? This is a commemorative project that is needed for an association's archive, so I can't not do it. I'm just at my wit's end and don't know what other measures to take. (other than use DVD Studio, and don't know how!)

movies were exported using QT conversion
Format: QT Movie, default settings
Options: size: NTSC 720x480 4:3 (for small movie)
Settings: Best; Keyframes Automatic; H.264, 29.97 fps; no internet streaming.
For 16:9 movie: same, but Size: Current (630x354)

.... so when you all were telling me to use Compressor and DVD Pro, I went to the local McNally-Robinson and checked out the resources there.
Found a Mac Genius book on FCP, which lightly touches on compressor, and an Apple Pro training book on DVD Pro 4, which also touches a bit on Compressor but gives specific instructions on settings to get me started (and which i have since experimented with).
So I naturally bought them and have been reading in steps and then going to work. (That's why i haven't replied to you: wanted to be able to give you a report.)
Since last week I have
• compressed 2 movies, and recompressed the main one several times to fine tune the quality
• made a dvd pro project (and 'saved as' in various versions and configurations) that has:
• a 16:9 video with chapters, added in dvd pro
• a 4:3 video with chapters( Dvd pro) converted to individual stories
• a slideshow
• a folder added to the dvd-rom with the photos used in the slideshow
• an intro menu with my own livetype generated background movie (also used in the video)
• the dvd template used changed to 16:9 instead of 4:3 aspect
• 3 chapter menus for the 16:9 movie
• a story menu for the 4:3
• background music, different for different menus
• remote control connections, for the tracks and the menu (that all work) (except for one problem that I have posted in the DVD forum)
• built and formatted a few of the configurations to make disc images that then played in dvd player (but haven't burnt to disc yet as i am waiting to solve the final 'menu' button problem)
Haven't done scripts or layered menus, or subtitles yet, and none of my work uses alternate angles, but i think I've got a fairly good handle on this now. And I think I'll use DVD Pro and Compressor from now on .... they're great and DVD pro is much more able to be individualized.
I still need to experiment more with Compressor, tho', and to learn more about the compression codecs.
(I don't like the quality of the Livetype segments in the 'send to QT' option form FCP, they're blurry. And the 'using Compressor' videos have nice crisp text, but there are residual lines in the edges of things wherever there is movement. I always set the Motion Estimation as 'best', and 2 pass VBR Best, and in the last one I tried, i set the Average bit rate at 7.6, max 8.9 and the GOP to IBP, size 7.
Doesn't seem any different from the others, just a teeny bit larger in size. But i'm happy with it for now, no more time to tinker with this part on this project.)

Can I burn a 10.33GB movie on a 4.7 GB Dvd-r?

Cut an Imovie that is 48 minutes long and 10.33GB
I try to create Imovie Magic with IDVD8 and burn it on a 4.7 DVD-R.
Takes 33 hours to render and burn. Is that nuts?
The computer usually shuts down or freezes and I can't continue.
I have another Mac, and I'm trying to burn the same movie on it
This time, I use an external drive. Takes 7 hours to burn, then as it's about to finish, it craps out. Sometimes it gives me a multiplexor error.
In the past, with Idvd 6, I've burned similar type and length movies onto a dvd.
What gives?

Don't move the iDVD application out of the Applications folder. That will mess up any updates as that's where the updaters look for the application.
Do you mean that you only have 16GB free on your HD or 16 GB total? If you need room on the boot drive you can move your iTunes and iPhoto libraries to one of the external HDs and run them from there. Also you can regain some free space by running Monolingual to remove the unneeded language modules. Just be sure to not delete English or very bad things will happen.

Various iDVD '08 Problems

I have read the posts in this discussion group and I don't see anyone describing these types of problems. Perhaps you can help.
I have a large (4 GB) multi-slideshow (11) project with over 400 total slides. I built each slideshow in iDVD from the pictures in my iPhoto '08 Library.
While building the project, iDVD crashed twice and I had one kernal panic.
In rearranging the order of my slides for one of the larger slideshows, several small groups of slides were randomly (?) scattered throughout the rest of the slideshow. I didn't notice this until after I burned the DVD. I could have sworn the Preview was perfect for all of the slideshows before the burn.
Trying to burn the project to a DVD was problematic. There were no warning symbols on the DVD map of the project. The first burn ended in a "Multiplexor Error - during muxing preparation (Project Conversion)". Nothing was written to the DVD. The second try ended in a "Multiplexing & Burning Asset Parsing" error. Still nothing written to the DVD but somewhat further along than before. On my little iMac G5-1.8 these initial burns (with encoding) take on the order of 5 hours.
A call to AppleCare Support gave me a few suggestions. The first was to try Advanced > Delete Encoded Asset. This eliminated the background encoding that was probably messed up with all of my editing of the slideshows. It gives a fresh encoding of the project at the time of the burn. This allowed me to finally burn the DVD. But I can't claim victory yet. When I played the DVD on an external player, part way through the last slideshow, the transitions (Dissolve) from one slide to the next were lost and it just displayed a green screen for the entire transition. This was the last slideshow of all my pictures (all 400 of them).
My Project Info window gives me a 100% green bar for Quality at Best Performance encoding. Every line in the Media box has a check in the Status column. Steve from AppleCare suggested changing the encoding to High Quality. From other posts on this discussion board it looks like iDVD will make two passes for High Quality encoding. Would this double my encoding and burn time to 10 hours??? Another suggestion Steve made is to eliminate one of my slideshows, perhaps the last and biggest one. Any other suggestions?
Has anyone else run into these types of problems in iDVD '08? Is this typical for new software?

When slideshows are sent to iDVD from iPhoto they are rendered out as movies, so they will take about twice as long to encode using two-pass. And since they can have motion, they will benefit from two-pass encoding.

I didn't create the slideshow in iPhoto and use the "Share > Send to iDVD" command. I built each slideshow within iDVD using the photos in iPhoto. I chose this method because dragging photos from a Finder window into iDVD significantly increased the file size of my project (from a few hundred KB to several hundred MB for the same number of slides). The one slideshow I did send to iDVD from iPhoto is several hundred MB and according to what you say above, it apparently was rendered as a movie before going to iDVD.
Questions:
Do you think this is where iDVD is having trouble with the large slideshow and the transitions for it (remember the green screen transitions)? Should I just pull the last slide show of 400+ slides and burn it as a separate DVD? All the other smaller slideshows (a couple were over 100 slides each) in the project were encoded fine with their transitions. It appears that iDVD is going to the iPhoto Library to grab each slide for the slideshows and then building the transition. For this project, the total is over 800 slides. Could that be the reason for the long encoding time?

What is taking so long and making the project so large is the transitions. To isolate the problem I suggest first burning this project without transitions to a disc image. If this still fails then just start removing slideshows/images until it works and then you will figure out which image is causing the problem.

I noticed in the progress window that transitions are encoded and tracked separately from other project items like menus and slides. But the transitions were encoded in parallel with other project items. I will try burning the project to disc image without the transitions and compare the times. But I really like the transitions between slides. They kind of take me back to the old days of a slide projector, screen and trays of slides.

Invalid field in parameter list. (0x26, 0x00)

I was archiving my old family videos and making a nice movie of them in final cut express. I exported them the same as I always do and created a menu using the reflections theme in iDVD. The movie was big so I adjusted the settings for DVD+R DL as I hae done before and clicked burn. I use and external Sony DVD Burner that is wonderful and has never given me any trouble.
After about ten hours I came back and there was an error message.
Burning Finished
Errors were found during the burning process

When I clicked on the down arrow this appeared...
The recording device reported the illegal request: Invalid field in parameter list. (0x26, 0x00.)
So i clicked ok and this appeared...
Multiplexor Error
There was a problem during multiplexing/burning

So I clicked ok and took the dvd to try and play it in a DVD player, obviously it wouldnt work so I quit iDVD and restarted my mac. I tried the process agian with another DVD and after 10 hours, same message and same result. So I went to the store and got sony DVDs (I was using memorex ones), but still, even with sony's DVDs I go tht esame message.
