Es2 in unison = stereo issue

Hey all.
I'm in the midst of retouching a mix - kinda last minute - if you catch my drift.
This particular track I'm working on I'm using the ES2 with 2x unison as a bass instrument.
The problem I'm trying to work on at the moment goes as follows:
The instrumentation of the bass functions more like a 70's style, funk keyboard part. Syncopated, melodic, enforces the melody of the singers.
The unison sound is very nice & open, but there is this flux between the voices where the body of the sound, < 300Hz, is going all over the place and I'm trying to tame it.
I've tried just simply working without the unison and adding chorus after, but it's just not the same. I've also tried using a multiband compressor, where I only use 1 band to squeeze the low end when this flux occurs, but the low end is still swirling left to right randomly.
Anyone have a good tip? Despite whether or not I figure this out, I figure this is a good opportunity to get some fresh outside advise in general.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Ideally something like Reason's stereo image plug-in would be cool right now. It works with 2 independent bands, very cool.

thanks for the respose.
the result of the unison setting plus a high setting of the analog knob created a very "wide" stereo bass/lead sound. The oscillators were noticeably detuned and that resulted in beading. So if you image every voice in unison mode being a seperate instance of ES2, that beading results in very unstable phasing - on two separate channels, uniquely. Hence volume and panning was messed up - and that ain't no good for a bass sound.
Switching the signal to mono would have unfortunately defeated the purpose of the actual stereo effect I wanted though.
As I said before; the Reason Stereo Image tool is very useful in such a scenario as you can independently control 2 bands. Where you can pull freqs <300Hz to mono and keep >300 Hz wide.
Whateves.
Peace

  • 4.3 Update - Car Stereo Issue, voice dialing not working with Bluetooth

I've seen some similar issues reported, but they were for specific cars/stereos, and the symptoms were different, so I'm posting about mine:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SIII, Android 4.3.
    Car Stereo: Pioneer AVH-X2500BT
This is a stereo I bought and installed myself. All of its features worked fine, and I was enjoying making calls using voice dialing via the stereo. Then, I installed the 4.3 update to the Galaxy SIII. Ever since (literally, I made a call that day before installing it, and tried shortly after), I cannot use the voice dialing feature. Any attempt to use voice dialing or voice commands via the car stereo will fail. Here's what happens:
I do a long press on the car stereo's Home button to initiate voice dialing. On my phone, S-Voice starts up, and a Toast (little message) pops up briefly that says "Check in-car audio". When I talk, the little animation on the microphone button in S-Voice does not happen, meaning it's not hearing anything. The car stereo shortly cancels out of voice dialing mode, as though it timed out, or something.
I've tried switching to Google voice, but the same thing happens. I've tried all kinds of configuration on both devices. I've unpaired and re-paired. Nothing.
Also, turn-by turn directions from Google Maps appears to not work. The app thinks it's giving them, and when I turn the car off, the voice suddenly works from the phone, but it just won't come out the stereo.
All other features work fine, including Pandora, and streaming Bluetooth audio. I can even make phone calls, by accessing the contacts and recent call list from the car stereo. The calls work and come through the stereo fine. Literally voice dialing and Google Maps are all that doesn't work.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

There could be any number of factors that may be affecting this, byounie. It may be that the firmware on your car stereo headunit may need to be updated. My direct recommendation to check first would be to access your bluetooth submenu, and next to paired info for the Pioneer AVH-X2500BT, you should see a little cog wheel/settings icon. Please select this, and start unselecting everything available there. Work your way up, and enable and test these different settings one by one, to see if there is a conflict between Google Maps and Voice dialing services. Let us know what happens, byounie.

  • Sync sound mono stereo issue

I'm currently syncing sound for a short film on Premiere CC. I synced all the clips in the timeline and it all syncs and sounds great. But when I "merge clip" the clips audio in the bin changes. The sync is still perfect but the sound goes from stereo to mono and tracks are added. The audio on-set was recorded in two ways.
    1) 1 track stereo L+R
    2) 3 track mono
When I merge clips with the the 1 track stereo, it goes from being one track to two. And it's no longer L+R. Both tracks are centered. When I sync the 3 track mono it adds 6 additional tracks. the top track being the audio and the bottom two being empty. Then the 4th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Then the 7th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Why am I having this issue and how do I fix it?
Tom if you're here I could use your help. Thank you!
    Dan

The issue comes from multi-channel .wav files.
I've worked on projects with multiple audio sources where the sound guy recording each one as discreet .wav files. So if you had two lavs and a boom for a particular shot, each take would generate three distinct .wav files. It took slightly longer to align on the timeline for syncing, but when I performed Merge with them, everything worked fine.
But on my current project I was working with a different sound recordist who would record those multiple sources into a single multi-channel .wav file. They were all recorded mono, but on some shots it would result in 6 different recorded mono tracks. Premiere displays those multiple mono tracks in their own separate tracks, already lined up on the timeline.
But when I merge this audio with picture, the resulting clip is crazy.
When the audio is synced and merged with picture into a clip, it exponentially adds blank tracks. Normally, during a merge, stereo tracks are split into two distinct mono tracks, one for each channel and mono tracks should remain the same. That is what is supposed to happen. But as we see here, an additional thing is going on that shouldn't happen.
Instead, with multi-track files, it treats ALL of the tracks as singular multi-channel tracks and tries to "split" them by creating additional empty tracks. But the most bizarre thing of all is that the number of dupes is equal to the total number if tracks. So for a shot with two lavs and a boom, there would be three tracks in the one clip. But Premiere is treating each of the three tracks as if each of them has three channels and creates three tracks for each of them; one with audio and two blank ones, for a total of nine tracks. For shots with three actors on lavs and with a boom, there are four tracks that are multiplied four times, giving me 16 tracks. I even have some takes where the five original mono tracks are turned into 25 tracks. Again, only five of them actually have audio in them and the rest are blank.
It's exponential. Had I been given an 8 track file, it would be turned into 64 tracks but 56 of them would be blank!
To make it even more fun, the real audio is spread out vertically on the timeline with the dummy tracks in between also equal to the number of real tracks. So a merged 4 track clip places the real audio on tracks 1, 6, 11, & 16, but audio from a merged clip with 5 tracks puts the audio on tracks 1, 7, 13, 19, & 25. So I can't just do a blanket "Modify Audio Channel" on everything and delete the dead tracks. It is all relative.
After the clips were borked up with the extra tracks, I went to Clip->Modify->Audio Channels and turned off all the empty channels, then saved a preset based on how many tracks there were. So in my footage bin I was able to organize by Audio Info and it listed the number of tracks it had. So I could put all of my 12 Mono Track clips together, highlight them all, then apply my "12 Mono" channel filter preset to all of them at once. Then I dragged them back to the timeline and they were fixed. Technically, those blank tracks probably still exist, but they are no longer visible.
And better yet, it doesn't put any vertical gaps between them. So if my audio was really on tracks 1, 6, 11, and 16 it places them on the timeline in tracks 1-4.
Now that I have the presets I can apply it to any further projects where I encounter this. It is still idiotic and obnoxious but not as catastrophic as I thought it was.

  • Confused About About Logic Stereo Issues

I'm not sure if any of this is true or not - but I have heard some talk about the stereo spread imaging in logic not being as wide in the mix as it could be. I think it had to do with using a stereo track vs two mono tracks instead.
Is any of this true? Is it better to use 2 mono tracks rather than one stereo track to get a wider stereo spread?
Someone else mentioned that it might be a good idea to use some sort of existing logic plugin to help widen the stereo spread on these stereo tracks. There is a special logic plug-in called " stereo spread " - would this be the proper plug-in to alleviate this issue? Is it really needed?

Yeah, but what about the right?
    Mono forever!
That doesn't answer my question though. I think you're avoiding the issue here. I see you're leaning heavily toward the left, and that's not...
    ...right...
I was going to say that this stereo spread issue
    (if it can
even be called an "issue") is a pan laws thing.
But I already did it for you...
I am merely in agreement. Can we just agree to agree?
    (hee hee!)

  • Scion TC Ipod stereo issues since itunes 7 release?

I upgraded my scion tc back in may of this year to an ipod stereo my ipod worked great with it up until i synced it with itunes 7.0. After this the ipod would freeze up when changing tracks as well as the hard drive could be heard spinning. Ultimately one ipod has been destroyed and the replacement is on its way out. I have had the stereo replaced as well as the car completely checked over by scion and they cannot find anything wrong with it. It has also exhibited issues after being formatted by a mac as well as a pc both running the same versions of itunes and both had the same effect. Has anyone else experienced issues with ipod connectivity in cars since upgrading to itunes 7?
    pc   Windows XP Pro

I finally gave up on iTunes 7. After uninstalling iTunes 7 and reinstalling iTunes 6, my iPod became more reliable and Windows XP would consistently mount it. Even though iTunes 7 is well conceived, I founded considerably slower than version 6. The slowdown becomes apparent when iTunes automatically starts with connecting an iPod. Syncing the iPod with a large music database will cause a slowdown; even a crash.
I do not believe that iTunes is multi-threading well on Windows XP. My other syncing applications do not put a strain on my computer’s resources. My computer handles Photoshop 10 megapixel processing and a 2 gigs bi-directional sync over my network without a hiccup. iTune grinds my computer to a halt with just a 2 gigs syncing to the iPod. In addition, all startup items were disabled in the troubleshooting process.
Even though features like the Summary tabs and view by album art appeal to me, I will hold off on the iTunes 7 upgrade in place of speed and reliability. I have a couple recommendations as well. These suggestions are for people with large music databases and a large number of hard drive and firewire devices.
TURN ON – Automatically update selected playlist only
TURN OFF – Open iTunes when this iPod is attached
If you restore you iPod, leave your computer alone for several hours while iTunes fills up a large capacity iPod. It took me all weekend to reload my iPod.

  • Car stereo issues

Does anyone know how to fix the problem of running there iphone thru their car stereo system. ever since i loaded the new os4 into the iphone i cant seem to get it to work the stereo ipod cable. tried everything. reboot this, reboot that and nothing. my old iphone works and still has the 3.1 software on it.

Hi.. I have a Sony Mex-bt3800u and had the same problem. Bought it when I was running os4.0.1 and after a hard reset everything worked great. Last weekend I updated to os4.1 and the stereo would no longer connect via usb.. But it wud thru Bluetooth. It drove me mad n nothing was able to cure the problem. I spoke with Sony n they said apple needed to fix. I wasn't happy n almost took the stereo back.. B4 I finalised this decision tho I visited halfords with my lead n phone n realised it wudnt work with any of the stereos which meant it was an iPhone problem. So I kept the stereo as it has the best of everything n least it still had the blutooth streaming option. Anyway.. I ordered an iPhone 4 last nyt which should come 2moro so decided I wud set my 3G up for my gf/t mobile. Now os4.1 doesn't have an unlock so I decided to downgrade back to os4. This ended up being pointless because it didn't downgrade the basement also. So I upgraded str8 afterwards again n am now waiting for 4.2. Anyway to cut a long story short.. My phone didn't connect b4 doing this.. I backed up from a much earlier backup n synced only the music at first and then afterwards a few of my apps too as it'll b set up as a new phone once the 4 comes thru the door. This was done yesterday. I came out to my car this evening and much to my amazement the phone now works with the stereo perfectly again. And I'm not even 100% sure why. Everything is the same as it was. Except I guess I skipped os 4.0.1 as now I went from 4.0-4.1. Other than this I only synced music.. Then apps. And I haven't added my Cydia tweaks cos theres no point yet. I did do the complete upgrade within it tho as before and the iPhone n stereo connectivity Is fully back for anything iPhone related on youtube.. Follow dinozabinos or what it is he calls himself. I never have any issues following his advice. This myt not solve your problem but it certainly has mine. I used the same oringinal version of 4.1 as I already had previously so that ain't updated!!. So I don't yet see what's different. But I can defiantly assure you this worked. If ya can't tell.. I'm made up. I may trobleshoot further if the new 4 has any issues. Good luck. I'm assuming this post won't b banned by mentioning the word Cydia because it's helpful and I found a big named store t'other day selling iPhones 4 which all had this on them. This told me 1 thing. They were jailbroken. Say no more.

  • Bluetooth Stereo Issues

I have tried the Sony Ericsson HBHDS980 and HBHDS205 both have drop call issues. Music works flawlessly, but whenever I receive a call or try to call someone, the connection always drop after a while. I have had the drop call issue with the HBHDS980 on other Win Mobile phones. I am just wondering if others have issues with stereo bluetooth head set. I have a blueant V1 which works flawlessly for calls but it's not stereo.

How do you mean car update? The head unit is aftermarket not built-in so the car itself does not have Bluetooth. It's worth noting (I forget whether I already did or not) that the Bluetooth streaming works perfectly with my iPhone 5 just not with the Sony. I'm now on my second Xperia Z2 as the first one's call quality was abysmal. While this one seems a **bleep** of a lot better this Bluetooth streaming issue is actually doing my head in and making me want to change phones completely.

  • IOS4.0.1 update causing GM Car Stereo Issues

    Hi
Updated to iOS 4.0.1 yesterday. Since the update when i plug my phone into my car via 30 pin connector and USB, my interface on my car loads as normally, however after a few minutes or so, or if i go to change songs, static cuts though and eventually will cut out the music sometimes remaining as ear shattering static or switch to static. At this point the car's UI will be stuck on that song and time elapsed on the song, i can switch to a different source and come back and the static or silence will remain.
On the iPhone 4, the play symbol will still be displayed as well as the album art of the song playing. Nothing has changed since the last time i used the setup except for updating to iOS 4.0.1.
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Similar problem here. My iPhone 3Gs worked sometimes in my 2010 Suburban when connected by USB cable. Then I updated the iPhone to version 4 and it stopped working completely. When I used the new "Multifunction" app to close all open apps it began to work. However, a week later it has stopped working at all. The "IPod/Aux" does not appear on the radio screen and there is no music menu. The iPhone appears to be charging, but songs play from the iPhone speaker, not the car stereo. Does anyone know of a solution or if GM is working on an update to the firmware in their radio?
(I would post this on a GM forum if there was one.)

  • Garageband and iTunes--Stereo Issues

I am using a Mac Mini from 2006 and Garageband 3.0.4 for podcasting. And the problem I am having is after I record the podcast, in playback it only plays through the left speaker. The pan is in the center position and trying to compensate by pushing it more to the right only makes the recording go mute.
However, after I save it, send it to iTunes, and convert it to an mp3, it plays back "kinda" in stereo. But, much more of the sound still comes through the left speaker. To even it out, I have to move the Mac Mini's slider a bit to the right to get volume coming out equal in both speakers. How do I get it to a point where when I save and convert the file, sound comes out of both speakers equally.
I should add, I use music at the beginning and the end which was originally recorded in stereo and it sounds just fine. So, the podcast starts with the music in full 50/50, left-right, stereo. But, then when my voice starts, the balance is like 70/30, left-right. How do I change this?
Please note: I don't believe this is a "Pan" problem I have fiddled with the knob in the Male Voice track and it makes no difference what I do except make it worse. I save the file as a Micro 64kb file in "Save As" and Export to iTunes as a Voice Podcast. In iTunes, I convert it in Custom mode so it is a 64kps file. And a 30 minute podcast ends up being about 14mb.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Itunes-airport-stereo issue

I have my itunes hooked to my airport in which I have my stereo hooked so I can listen to my itunes on my stereo wireless. Since the new Itunes download, I cannot get to play on my stereo. The button is gone where I can switch from computer to stereo. Please advise any advice.
    thanks
    g

I'm having a similar problem. However, my iTunes audio output selector button does show and it also has options of computer or airport express. But iTunes will not engage a selection of airport express. Other computer in the house on iTunes 6 still works fine. I've re-booted airport express from this computer a couple of times, no effect.

  • Stereo Issues

    Model: HPTouchsmart 300 PC
For seemingly no reason at all, the stereo seems to be switching to mono from the left channel at random intervals. If I change the sample rate, the problem fixes (temporarily) i.e. the act of changing the sampling rate fixes the problem, even if I switch back to my old sampling rate immediately. To be 100% clear, the sound isn't cutting off from the right speaker, it is just doubling the output from the left. The problem, obviously, is independent of the audio source - headphones, speakers etc all have the same problem. No 3rd party audio codecs on this thing either.
I'm clueless as to what is going on. I updated my audio drivers, with no effect.

I don't know if it is confirmed to work on all models, but there are two theories as to why that works to eliminate the warning.
Theory 1: The warning doesn't play through the preamp outputs
When you use an external 4 channel amplifier you would be using the preamp outputs to feed the signal to the amp and wouldn't be using the normal speaker level outputs of the head unit.  If the warning only plays through the internal amp and not the preamp outputs then you wouldn't hear it.  I personally don't think this is the case (see below) since they seem to want you to hear and it wouldn't make sense for them to only have that one thing that doesn't play through the outputs.
Theory 2:  The warning plays after the unit is off
This is the one I think makes the most sense.  The warning plays after the unit itself has shut down and since you would normally be using the remote output of the head unit to turn the amp on and off, the amp itself would be off by the time the warning plays and you wouldn't hear it.

  • Iphone 4s no longer plays music in my car!

Last week I lost all my contacts, they disappeared, everything else is in tact. I decided to do the upgrade that itunes asked for on my 4s, now I cant play any songs in my car when I plug my phone into usb. Worked perfectly fine before. Sometimes a song will play a bit and then just quit. The songs work fine when listening on itunes.I also noticed that when syncing a number of songs doubled on my playlists on my phone....any suggestions?

    Hi hockeymom11!
So it looks like you have a couple of issues here, let me address them individually. If you have a backup in either iTunes or iCloud, you will want to apply that backup to your iPhone in order to get your contacts back. The article informing you on restoring from your backup can be found here:
iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521
As far as the songs go, you will probably want to try deleting all of the songs off of your phone and resyncing them onto your iPhone.
The car stereo issue is a little more intricate, and has a whole article to itself outlining troubleshooting steps. You can find that article right here:

  • IPhone 4 no longer playing music in dock

    Hi,
My iPhone 4 has stopped playing music through any of my Apple docks. My friends iPhone 3 plays music through the same docks ok so the problem doesn't lie with them. My iPhone 4 charges in the dock Ok but just doesn't play music. I suspect this could be related to a recent IOS upgrade - I'm currently on 5.1
Has anyone else experienced this or know of a solution?
    Thanks!

  • Problems recording in-line w/ Creative Nano P

I have been trying to record some streaming audio of talk shows using the in-line function. For some reason it only records in the left channel and the audio quality is poor, with some minor background hiss. The plug connection is tight; I checked it several times.
I' m not too fussy on audio quality- just wondering why this is happening. Just want something to listen to on long rides. Any thoughts or hints would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'm not sure on the technicals about it, but it's not a feature that works very well.
I understand the quality can be a bit of a problem, but I've not heard of mono/stereo issues before.
You're best to keeping with the mic/line in port on your PC.
Difficult though when recording on the PC Hence the recommendation to use MediaSource.

  • Exports for DVD only include left channel of audio! Help!!!

Hi, I just realized that the files that I have been exporting using compressor have been only exporting the left channel. I am not sure what the problem is and would appreciate any help anyone could give me, as I'm on a big deadline and need to solve this ASAP.
The way I've been doing it, is I right click on the sequence name in Final Cut Pro and select Export > Export Using Compressor. Then I selected the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes option. The AIFF file that is created seems to only have audio in the left channel. The original files themselves are definitely stereo, and play both channels in Final Cut.
I really don't understand. The Inspector within Compressor shows this information for the AIFF file:
    File Extension: aiff
    Estimated file size: unknown
Audio Encoder: 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
It says Stereo, so I don't know what the problem is! Please help!!!

In the Sequence Settings, I see this:
    Downmix: 0
    Grouping: Stereo
I also checked the Audio Mixer window and nothing seems to be muted or solo'd. A1 is panned all the way to the left, and A2 all the way to the right, but I'm guessing this is normal, and just the way that stereo channels are shown?
I'm not sure if I have downmix enabled--where do I check that?
On somebody else's suggestion, I tried exporting a non self-contained Quicktime movie from FCP and then dragged that into Compressor and it seems to solve the stereo issue. Not sure why it doesn't work going straight from FCP, but there must be something going on inside there...
Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it!
