ESA Development

Is the ESA still being actively developed for? Since the final cutover to Cisco, they have sent EOL notices for a couple of AsyncOS versions but nothing new has come out. The last version is from more than 1 year ago and the Outlook plugin is more than 2 years old.
I have been promised bug fixes in both but there is nothing in sight. Just wondering if this thing is still on?

Bob, I'm a PM in the email security team. Venetian is currently undergoing beta and targetted for FCS in May. It brings in lot of great features like virtual appliances, CPQ among host of other newer items. Outlook plugin 7.3 is coming out in next couple of months. We have released BCE apps in appstore for both iphone and android. It's all happening

  • Searching for diploma thesis theme

    Hi all,
I'm currently searching for a theme for my diploma thesis which will start in 10/2006.
I'm going to focus the topic in the <b>ESA</b> (or in general: <b>SOA and web services</b>) environment so any suggestions are welcome! The duration of my thesis is limited to 3-6 months so the suggestions should be realizable in this period. Maybe I could bring forward ESA development or solve a problem?!
My main development focus is ABAP Objects and Java - I'm working in SAP Environment since 2 1/2 years.
If your interested or have any questions about the procedure please don't hesitate to write me an e-mail (please use the e-mail address in my SDN Business Card).
    Best regards
    Dominik

    Hi Dominik,
I have a very simlira situation, I'm looking for a theme for my thesis.
Same as you I plann to do it in 3 months, and I have a similar background in abap.
    (big coincidence, isn't it?)
I'm not sure about ESA, the theme can be implement a solution? or a business process using web services?
    integrate current web services?
I'd like to know if you already have a theme or some interesting options.

  • ESA system and Netweaver developer studio

    hi
how can i  connect to ESA system from Netweaver developer studio?
is there a tutorial i can learn from?
    thanks

    hi guy,
there is no such thing like a "ESA system". ESA(Enterprise Service Architecture) or more precisely SOA(service oriented architecture) is an idea or a paradigm, describing a kind of IT-architecture(application level) capable to meet a number of today's challenges of heterogenous system landscapes (find yourself some kick-start literature to get familiar with SOA/ESA principles).
This said, you can't "connect to ESA System" from NWDS, but you can develop software(e.g. services) in NWDS to be deployed to a system that resembles a service oriented architecture, for instance SAP Netweaver, which adds enterprise level features (scalability, stability, sw lifecycle management, ...) to it's SOA blueprint nd therefore calls it ESA.
    hope this clarifies some things,

  • Client-Server - SOA.... Is it really a transition or a big development  ?

    Hi,
In all sources related to SOA/ESA by SAP, it is said that, transitioning from Client-Server Arch(CSA) to SOA is the same as transitioning from Mainframe systems to Client-Server Arch.
If we think about Mainframe and CSA, it is obvious that there had been big differences in that transition. Such as, the INTELLIGENT CLIENT concept had appeared to replace the DUMMY CLIENTS, so this had changed the way of IT Business. There would be a main application providing several functionalities(server) and other applications which want to use those functionalities (clients) would connect to the server using some functionalities on its own (that means a client appliction should also have some functionalities in order to at least connect to the server, so that made them different from the DUMMY clients of the mainframe era)
Now, when I look at the differences between SOA and CSA, I cannot see that incompareble differences. Why ? Let me explain :
    - One of the most important differences between SOA and CSA is, SOA is vendor and platform independent, so that any application can call any applications functionality as long as they are using Web Services. That is true. But the question arises here : It is still the case that someone is calling some others' functionalities (services), so there is still a client/server mentality, isn't there and We will still be using several client/server programming languages in order to realize the main functionality of the web services but this will be transparent to the user and the integration. The main difference is, SOA is vendor and platform independent. But I don't think this can be commented as a missing feature of CSA. Because the aim of CSA was to make the clients more intelligent and not to make them vendor/platform independent. And also architectures like CORBA and DCOM have also tried to achieve that independency (even though they have restrictions compared to Web Services, one of the main reasons for this is using Web as a transport/communication protocol) but they are still treated as some extensions on top of CSA because they are using CSA beneath. But if we compare Mainframes and CSA, even though I haven't seen manframe ages, I think it is clear that CSA does not use any architectural functionality of Mainframes. They are completely different.. But is SOA and CSA completely different ?
I agree with all reasons why today business needs sth more agile, more flexible and it is becoming clearer day by day that SOA and Web Services provides this environment, BUT, I still cannot make it clear, WHY it is accepted as a transition from CSA and why it is not treated as a big development over CSA while using the main features of it.
    Any comments will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Ahmet Engin Tekin

Good point..Actually those are the things clearly known but it becomes a bit confusing to build clear sentences when it comes to declare the differences. Anyway, here are my additions :
    - Mainframes were centralized systems which had their own hardware architecture as well. All processes/applications were running on 1 central DB/system and everyone in the company had to use the same functionality and interface.
    - In time, as a result of business demand, people needed different functionalities/applications regarding different business needs. This could either be done by extending the higly-costed big mainframe systems/softwares OR a new approach had to be developed in order to solve those problems. At this point, (thanks to IBM,Macintosh and Xerox) PC and ethernet concepts had emerged. That was a completely different hardware architecture which allowed less costly systems and also distributing the process load and/or applications to different systems in one landscape (app servers, intelligent clients - 2 tier, 3- tier arch.). Thus, while those were happening on harware side, new communication and programming models/languages emerged on software side. As a result, people started using different applications on different systems according to their needs and thus an efficient solution had been provided to the business need (described above).
To criticise, this was really a big transition. Not only software concepts but also hardware concepts are also changed drastically. Actually, it is not wrong if we say, developments on the hardware side, allowed changes on the software side
    - What happened next ? Companies started using so many different applications by different vendors with different business logic and programming models (thanks to CSA). But in times, this has emerged the biggest problem of the CSA era : Integration.
We all know the rest. "Web Services" concept emerged with SOA as well. So that, the boundaries between the systems began to disappear.
So, is this a transition ? Well, yes it is.. The point that made it confusing (at least for me) is that this time there is no hardware transition (yet) but only a transition in software side. But I still insist that the IT transition during Mainframe->CSA was like a revolution (forget what you've left behind) but from CSA to SOA; it is more likely to be an evolution (the next best thing)
    Anyone have more comments ?

    Ahmet

  • Development in ECC 6.0

    Hi Friends,
We are implementing the SAP 6.0 version. I have heard that the development in ECC 6.0 should be done completely in java. Is that true?
If that is the case what are the option that ECC 6.0 has to develop reports in java accessing the Sap database.
Can some one please help me with this?
    Regards,
    Ramesh

    Ramesh ,
There are several approches to your problem . Before that let me say , "ECC 6.0 should be done completely in java " is not a right assumption because ECC is built on ABAP stack so the application / programs within the ECC should be developed in ABAP .
Coming to your problem , if you want to develop reports in java accessing the backend SAP ECC , as per the NW04s , you could have a look at the following IT scenario
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/f5/416c4255b3c553e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
The easiest method is using visual composer , pls have a look at this
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/44/6bb4dfce353673e10000000a114a6b/content.htm
More complex application can be developed using webdynpro technology ( again you could use webdynpro for java or abap ) as apposed to SAP 's earlier approach ( using HTMLB , JSP , JSPDynpage etc - Abstract component etc.... mentioned by sukanto will be in this category  ). Webdynpro is the strategcal UI development technology for SAP because of its numerous advantages

And finally , this is the SAP's very latest approach using ESA/ SOA methodology using composite appication .

  • Role of a developer

    Hi,
What is the role of a devloper involved in ESA of SAP. To what extent is he expected to understand business processes?
What are the tools he would be using. How much coding he would have to do, and besides web services , what else he would be working on. Is it only java and j2ee?
    Regards,
    Harish

    Harish,
The role of the developer will be crucial in ESA. What he needs to understand is that given a business process, what are the functionalities that will be required by other applications internally / externally and then develop them as services.
He needs to develop the granular service and keep using else where in his own application. ESA does not necessarily mean web services and it has nothing to do whether its Java / J2EE / ABAP / .Net. If you are coming from SAP R/3 stand point, you need to make sure that you have all the coding that is a part of the business process is available as services.
    Hope this clarifies your question.

    Ravi

  • CAF (Composite Application Framework) and ESA

    Hi,
As far as I understand, XApps is presented as a piece of Netweaver (the column on the left side of the NetWeaver stack), an XApps is also a kind of business process based on several applications (or services ?).
XApps runtime and composition platform is the CAF and not NetWeaver ?
So I am confused and I do not understand if
    - ESA and XApps is the same concept
    - ESA and XApps are not based on the same technology
    - XApps will be part of the Enterprise Services Repository and CAF will be rewrtitten to be based on XI so that the vision and the strategy is coherent
If someone ca nclarify, I will greatly appreciate.
    Cheers.Christophe

XApps is a concept. There is no general implementation of it. You can write Xapps in Java, In ABAP, or whatever. However, there are nice tools in development to do XApps, which are completely Java based.
    > XApps runtime and composition platform is the CAF and
    > not NetWeaver ?
CAF does run on NetWeaver. As it has a "Framework" in it's name it naturally should not contain a server environment, should it?
    >
    > So I am confused and I do not understand if
    > - ESA and XApps is the same concept
    No.
    > - ESA and XApps are not based on the same technology
    Yes.
    > - XApps will be part of the Enterprise Services
    > Repository and CAF will be rewrtitten to be based on
    > XI so that the vision and the strategy is coherent
    where did you hear this?

  • Publish Self developed service in preview system

Is it already possible or planned to be possible to publish self developed service in the Enterprise Services repository of the preview system? Is yes, where is this described?
    Thanks and best regards. Sandro

    Dear Sandro,
That is an excellent question - At the moment this is not possible in the ESA Preview System, but it will certainly be possible as part of SAP's upcoming product releases, where partners and customers can contribute content to the Enterprise Services Repository.

  • ESA in A2A interfaceing

    Good day,
I have a methodology question regarding the subject:
offcurse the ESA architecture makes a lot of sense in
B2B interfacing and in adding non-SAP systems to complete the SAP business processes in the organization system landscape, but what about in-house interface design, that is A2A interfacing? is this concept is the one to be taken when it comes to design and develop interfaces inside the organization? using XI for example?
    Real life scenario example :
interfaces that are created only to create\delete or update master data not as part of a business process.
.e.g. the trigger for the message is a change in master data (Create material master data) and not a business process that was initiated (create purchase order).
I'll appreciate your answer as this subject has high impotents.
    Nimrod Gisis

    hi kartik,
i disagree with your comments and do not understand part of it. i think your mixing things up.
can there be a contradiction between XI and webservices at all? webservices are a way to describe service interfaces and transport protocols whereas XI being a (managed) messaging middleware does manage message exchange (monitoring, dispatching, if necessary mapping, etc.). you can well use XI to manage exchange of SOAP messages(from and to) webservices if (and thats the crucial point for me) the management tasks aren't done elsewhere.
Next, I wonder what you mean with enterprise services in suggested contradiction to webservices. In my understanding, enterprise services are enterprise grade web services, if you like, very robust, clearly defined and whatever web services.
Here's my thought on the original question. Of course you can use webservices technologies to manage your master data if you think that management of master data is worth a web service (or an enterprise service). in your example, if you already have a UI to manage master data and want to use a single additional (A2A) update channel from an application that isn't capable of creating SOAP messages, etc, you might do it differently, maybe using XI to map data.
If you want to put all your (internal as well as external) interfaces on a common technological ground it may well make sense to web service enable all of those entities and keep their WSDLs in a common repository (local UDDI or Enterprise Service Repository).
    hope that helps,
    anton
PS: Kartik, please don't understand this as an offense, i'd rather be interested to understand your point of view.

  • Developement XI-Content for Enterprise Services

    Hi,
What is XI-Content? And what must be defined in XI-Content for Enterprise Service Enabling?
We have defined some services as provider, these services are goint to be in XI-Content. But we are also requesting some infromation to business partner, these inforamtion could be services or messages in case our partner does not have services.
So my feeling is: in XI-Content we need to define:
    Interfaces for the services which we provide;
Interfaces which we as consumer request?
Interfaces which from partner as provider?
Interfaces for the messages which are sending from partner?
Mapping between the service interfaces (provider <->consumer)
Mapping between the messages and the services?
I am sorry, but this is really confusing when we plan the development of XI-content.
Could you give me a clear picture or guideline according to your experience?
    Thank you very much.
    Jing

This XI content is nothing but most commonly used integration scenarios for address specific business process requirements for a particular landscape. For Ex:Interface for Creating PO ,Sales Order etc.
I have read many articles which say that XI Integration Repository will be re-named as Enterprise Service Repository which will enable the customers to kick-start with Enterprise Services.SAP sets the ball rolling by providing 500 Enterprise Services.
As far as I understand these services are nothing but commonly used re-usable integration scenarios which are powered by Webservices.Enterprise Service Granularity depends on how you define your "Service".
You have an awesome article on ESA which explains in an excellent way.
Search the sdn for Enterprise Service Design Guide which can be an answer all your questions.

  • What does ESA stands for ? and where it is use

    Hi,
What does ESA stands for ? and where it is use ?
    Thanx

    Hi
ESA is enterprise Service Oriented Architecture.
This is a new strategic direction in which SAP AG is planning to take all industries to. They have developed SAP Netweaver for this. SAP as such is a great application but JAVA is very user friendly. In past integration of web applications was not so good with SAP.
With SAP Netweaver ABAP and JAVA gets integrated great and hence we have seamless integration between SAP and webapplicaation. This also helps to give great USER interfae with real time information search on web from SAP.
e.g. tracking information of sales order, invoice etc from web from SAP.
    If helpful, reward accordingly.
    Kind Regards

  • XI, PI, ESA, ESR

    Hello Everyone,
I have been working with XI and now started looking to upgrade XI to PI and calculating ROA, etc...
As I am going to several docs, basically there is no change between XI and PI if we install latest service packs.  Am I right?
Is ESR part of XI or NW04S?
Is there any step by step example building an interface with ESA architecture using ESR?
I would like to understand the architecture and development procedure to implement ESA using ESR and XI.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  thanks..Hari Potti

    you're right
    >>>is ESR part of XI or NW04S?
    no it's not
    >>>Is there any step by step example building an interface with ESA architecture using ESR?
it should be a part of a new XI release

  • ESA in terms of SOA patterns

    Hello Everyone,
I had worked in SAP NetWeaver areas like XI,Portals, BW etc. I was looking through the SOA architecture and SAP mentions that ESA is the extension of SOA concept that it creates Enterprise services rather than only services where corporate object model, canonical data model is taken into consideration.
What I am looking at is that whether ESA has got some patterns like SOA has e.g.Service Proxy,Service Integrator etc. or how it fits into these typical SOA patterns?
Secondly I guess XI is the ESB of in ESA and in one of these forums I found that conceptually XI is ESB but actually its a Hub and Spoke model..just wanted to know then how its a ESB which is not similar to Hub and Spoke?
Thirdly is ESA composer tool like NetWeaver Developer Studio or its enhanced version of Composite Apps Framework?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks And Regards
    Rajeev

    Hello All-
I was just observing this post. Currently we are evaluating SAP NetWeaver stack in SOA space. We had come up with couple of evaluation parameters. If somebody can answer/point to the right resources, it will be great help
1.Does the NetWeaver provide any IDE which  have  ability to create new services in J2EE, .NET, DB2, and CICS?
2.Can the IDE convert existing J2EE, .NET, DB2, CICS components to Web services?
3.Can the IDE integrate with standard modeling tools (Rational Rose/XDE etc.) for forward and reverse engineering?
4.I understand that Web Application Server 6.40 can host J2EE based web services. Can it also host .Net based web services? If not, please provide suggested mechanisms from SAP to host non-J2EE based web services?
5.Can the registry tool provided by SAP integrate with IBM-Tivoli Directory Server and/or any other external directory servers to provide user based access permission to services. If Yes, what kind of integration is provided?
6.Does the registry tool support UDDI-level replication, enabling support for federated registries?
7.Does SAP NetWeaver provide a separate tool for Metadata repository or is it integrated with the registry tool?
8.Does SAP NetWeaver have capability to record Policies, contracts for Services and then later monitor them at design and run time?
9.Does SAP NetWeaver stack support service orchestration using services based on SAP, J2EE and .NET
10.What are the Data transformation requirements provided by the orchestration, BPEL engine provided by SAP?
11.What kind of domain templates are provided by SAP BPM engine?
12.Can the output provided by SAP BPM tool be interpreted by any standard BPEL tool? If yes please provide list of such BPEL engines.
13.Does SAP NetWeaver stack support WS-Reliability features? If yes please provide list of features supported and the details of support provided against each of the features
14.Does SAP NetWeaver stack provide any Testing Tool? If yes please provide the tool name along with the features provided.
15.What kind of Transport-Level, Service-Level security features by supported by SAP NetWeaver Stack? Can you please map the security features provided with WS-Security
16.From an SOA Implementation perspective, how does the SAP Netweaver stack leverage the standards suggested by CAF
    Thanks in advance

  • ESA catalog of possible services ; has this been published?

At Sapphire New Orleans in May 2004 it was announced that in 2004 the following would be achieved in the transition  to ESA-compliancy:
-Create a catalog of possible services and determine development priorities
-Deliver first sets of service-oriented scenarios, especially in the area of Collaboration scenarios
Have these objectives been achieved? If so, is there anything published on these items?
    best regards,
    Hans Diepstraten, Atos Origin

The announcement you are referring to contained a few different statements:
    - In 2004 we will deliver "First service-enabled scenarios: focus on collaboration"; this is part of mySAP ERP 2004.
    - In 2004 we will work on "Enterprise services inventory and prioritization"; this work started 2004 and is ongoing.
    - In 2005 we will make "Enterprise services inventory available for planning" by customers and partners; the publishing is currently scheduled for Q3 2005.
    Hope this helps.

  • ESA/SOA Architecture and SAP

I just went through the ESA/SOA documentation.
In case of implementation of an ESA/SOA concept, we
    follow 4 steps.
    1. Analysing the core business processes
    2. Forecast (Componentizing)
    3. Design of the services
    4. Implementation
My question relates to 3rd phase.
It talks about retaining the existing investment
made by industries in the current systems/
    developments.
So say take an example, i have SAP system 4.6 C
having standard as well as specific functionality
    implemented in ABAP.
So how the ESA / SOA architecture will help in
retaining the existing investment made in ABAP
    developments.
Few of the issues came to my mind:
    1. Not necessarily all ABAP developed have
there business logic done in function modules.
    2. It will involve rework of making all these ABAP
to make it usefull for ESA.
    etc...

    Yogesh,
You raise some good points.  In fact we had some similar constraints on re-use (use existing ABAP code as Services) at a client I worked with that already has a number of Services in production.  We leverage BAPI's as Services directly and through XI 3.0.  So just because you have ESA working for you, does not mean that everything SAP 4.6c is automatically useable as a Service.
For instance custom functionality that has been embedded in a set of dialog screens may be very difficult to extract to form a set of coherant Services (case above).  If complex logic has been placed directly in the screens themselves, you will a have harder time dealing with this.  The ESA / Services paradigm, as well general coding principals for component-based development encourage the separation UI and Business logic, but everyone can cite examples of doing it, so there is no reason to ignore it.
The short answer is that "yes" it may involve re-work to leverage the code already developed as Services.  Does this invalidate the statement "leverage existing investment in ABAP as Services"?  No, regardless of language ABAP or Java, code that was never intented to be used as Services will likely involve some re-work/re-configure.  The key is that many of the builing blocks of code that are used can be readily exposed as Services, and that most business functionality can be "wrapped" in a Service facade that makes it usable as Service.  The key is that the hard part has been done, you have code that meets a business need.  The additional step of making it serve as a Service or set of Services is a minor incremental cost.  Here the contrast is pushing something built and tested in a new direction to make it more valuable to the Enterprise -versus- considering buiding something completely new.
Also do not just limit your thinking to ABAP in 4.6c.  You could do some re-work in ABAP to expose capabilities as Services and then leverage NetWeaver to help turn them into the Enterprise Services for the organization.  With Netweaver you have many tools to help you do this with minimal effort.  For instance, if a set of Services are extracted from existing ABAP code (building blocks) that then need to be orchestrated to meet the business need you could use our ccBPM capability of XI to do this instead of the dialog screens that existed before.  You will quickly find you have many Services that can be used by other parts of the organization and mechanism to decouple your implementation from the consumers that use it.
For completeness, not all existing code in ABAP should be turned into Services.  There is plenty of valuable functionality that is only valuable in the context of the R/3 environment.  Part of SAP's use of ESA, is that <u>we</u> are re-working everything we have over time to create and leverage Services.  When we do this, customers have the same Services to leverage "as-is", and we have provided a technology platform (Netweaver) that allows you to extend our Services without creating many of the "custom code" issues that have been a part of the upgrade lifecycle.
