ESATA 5/6 + CF reader

Hey guys,
Is there any way to make the #5 and #6 SATA pathways on the motherboard capable of hot swapping? I just installed two Addonics SATA CF card readers and set them up in my second drive bay [wired to the SATA pathways on the motherboard under the fans]. Unfortunately, I can only get CF cards to show up in System Profiler, Disk Utility or the Finder if I put them in and restart the machine.
Is there any way to make that into a hot-swappable interface? They work fine with a SATA to eSATA cable using my e4P eSATA card... but I can't hot-swap with the internal interface.
Guesses?

Well, some research has led me to the realization that they are not hot swap ports from the factory. Lame, considering this is just a software/firmware thing.
Is there a workaround?

  • [W510] - USB 3.0 SSD, poor performance.

    Help please?
I'm getting some rather poor performance on both of the USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
I have an SSD that's been tested via internal SATA II connection, capable of (sequential) read 275MB/s, and write 250MB/s. Also have a 3.5 inch WD Caviar Black 2TB SATAIII (WD2002FAEX), tested via eSATA, capable of (sequential) read 150MB/s, and write 150MB/s (think it saturated the eSATA on the W510).
However, when either of these two drives was connected via USB 3.0 (tested with three different brands of USB 3.0 enclosure), the sequential read performance was only at 85MB/s, and write was (REALLY bad) at 60MB/s (even with the SSD). This leads me to think there's a bottleneck somewhere on the W510 (because I know for certain, the USB 3.0 enclosures are capable to at least give 130MB/s read and write. The drives are also capable of performing faster than 100MB/s as well).
All drivers, BIOS, firmware are the latest. Platform is Windows 7 Ultimate - 64bit.
The NEC USB 3.0 chipset seems to be connected to PCI Express 2.0 x1 bus.  Reading on the Intel QM57 chipset spec, the PCI Express 2.0 implementation is only capable of serving 2.5GT/s (http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/qm57/qm57-overview.htm), using 8b/10b encoding (http://www.tmworld.com/article/318759-What_does_GT_s_mean_anyway_.php), that gives 2Gbps.  So I was expecting the USB 3.0 connection is capable of giving me around (not exact, as I accept there's overhead) 200MB/s.
At this point in time, a single mechanical drive (consumer level) can't quite go up to 200MB/s yet, but SSD can.  And therefore, I expected my SSD benchmark via USB 3.0 could at least give me that....sadly it wasn't the case with the W510.
This brings two questions I have for the forum:
    1. Why is my W510 USB 3.0, in combination with high performance disks and rather capable USB 3.0 enclosures, perform so poorly.
    2. If my understanding from above is correct, then isn't this "USB 3.0" feature (regardless of my benchmark result) sounds misleading?  Because the product, W510, is simply incapable of delivering a USB 3.0 experience even in "ideal" situation (limited by the 2.5GT/s).

I did try eSATA as well, the WD drive was able to do 150MB/s and 149MB/s, read and write respectively. (as the QM57 chipset natively supports SATA at 3Gb/s)
The issue here is as part of the decision process to get the W510, USB 3 capability came into consideration (for having more than 1 fast external storage device).
    EDIT:
Ultimately, what I'm really after is:
    1. Have I configured something incorrectly, or misconfigured something.  Or is there's some ideal component linkage I'm missing.
    2. Is the W510's USB 3.0, at the very least, capable of delivering 2.5GT/s?
    3. I may, or may not have to file a complaint to Lenovo or BBB for misleading marketing / sales info.
    2nd EDIT:
I do thank you for suggesting eSATA.  However, if Lenovo is going to reply to this, I simply won't take "use the touchpad instead" if the trackpoint isn't working properly.

  • Images not showing in viewer and browser

I've been using Apreture 2.1.1 without any problems until yesterday. Even though all my projects are in tact, I can no longer see the images in the Aperture viewer and browser. I really don't know how this happened. To rectify the problem I did the following:
    1. Verified and repaired the Disk using Disk Utility
    2. Logged in in Safe mode and did the above
    3. Uninstalled Aperture, removed all reference files and re-installed
    4. Opened the Library and photos are all intact.
    5. Uninstalled Aperture and re-installed the 2.0 version
I did all the above but still have the same issue. Just can't figure out what is wrong here.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    thanks
ps. Forgot to add this: It also crashes when I want to quit it

did you dump the preferences and appropriate other files? prior to the reinstall? otherwise if any of those files are bad you'll be installing aperture with the same possibly corrupt files.
your problem sounds like a hard drive or cable issue, have you swapped out cables?
what cable are you using? eSATA? FW800?

  • Build your own MacBook pro

I am planning to buy a 13" macbook pro to use during my PhD. I will be dealing with large amounts of data (several GB big files) and will have to process them quickly. I will also be programming and writing and testing code. Should I improve the configurations? If so how? Should I add RAM? Should I upgrade the processor?

If you are going to be processing large quantities of data and programming, you would be better served with an i7 processor unit from the 15" family of MBPs.  The non-baseline hard drives and non-glare screens are only available from the Apple on-line store...memory upgrades are available at the Apple retail stores but very expensive compared with sources such as Crucial and OWC, http://www.macsales.com who are Mac specialists.  Upgrading from the 5400 rpm drive to the 7200 rpm drive will give an appreciable boost in storage access time.
If you are going to program in languages such as FORTRAN, you will need to register as a developer (free to do that) so you can download xCode which is free to developers.  You have to have xCode to run most compilers.
Also get an external hard drive, prefereably one that is fast and has multiple interfaces such as eSata and Firewire 800.

    Several drawbacks to that iMac:
    1) Slower, less powerful CPU - fewer cores and fewer threads. Plus, no iMac can be overclocked at all; they are permanently locked at stock speed.
    2) No RAID support or capability whatsoever.
    3) Can only accommodate a single internal fast disk - period. That disk, unfortunately, is used for the OS and programs. The only viable outputs on that iMac are the Thunderbolt ports - and they, too, are limited as to the number of disks that can be connected.
    4) The 3TB disk is normally way, way, way overkill for an OS disk. However, given the complete lack of internal upgradability and the lack of internal space, Apple might as well install the largest-capacity disk it could get its hands on.

  • Install Win XP,Vista or 7 to external HDD

    Hi there!
Can I install Win to external HDD or SD card by bootcamp?

The external port has to be a native port on the motherboard.
In the sense that USB or Firewire won't support booting, there are PC boards with eSATA that can, but you also in those situations need access to the BIOS boot manager - as I understand it and from my own PCs.
If you could tap the internal SATA port you could, but what is the sense of that. Hybrid systems with an SSD + 1TB internal drives, not sure how they are wired or there is the OWC kit for iMac now to add eSATA off the motherboard.

  • The new Macbooks and MacBook Pros - Firewire being phased out?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
With the latest release of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, does it seem to anyone else that Firewire is being phased out? Even the new iPod Touch's cannot be charged via a Firewire cable.
(The first iPod Touch has a Firewire/ USB compatible dock).
I am somewhat baffled as a year ago Firewire was all the rage for Video Editing. It had a better reputation for sustained transfer of data and not dropping frames.
    (Critical with video editing).
Also - the several miniDV cameras I've owned, including my current model, all transfer their data into a computer via a Firewire port.
I have three External Drives at the moment (mostly for Video Editing) and all work with either Firewire 400 or 800 (or both). None have a USB 2.0 port.
The new MacBooks don't even have a Firewire port.
The new 15" MacBook Pro has only a port for Firewire 800.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Should I begin shifting my external drives to USB 2.0 connectivity?
Even though USB 2.0's reputation for transferring Video is not very good?

When importing video from FireWire-based camcorders, the video is sent in real time to the computer, which is why FireWire is necessary. That's because FireWire-based devices use tape to record video (DV or HDV), which cannot be accessed in the same way as memory cards or hard drives (the camcorder can't rewind during capture).
With USB-based camcorders, this is no longer an issue, as the video is stored and transferred as a file, rather than a real-time stream.
Also - the several miniDV cameras I've owned, including my current model, all transfer their data into a computer via a Firewire port.
FireWire-based camcorders won't work with the new MacBooks (you won't be able to import your video without using another computer).
The new 15" MacBook Pro has only a port for Firewire 800.
And an ExpressCard slot, which can be used to add additional FireWire or eSATA ports if necessary.

Exceptionally well. You can also get an Express Card adapter and run super fast eSATA external drives too.

  • What to use for scratch disk?

I'll be getting a new mac in the coming year, probably either macbook pro or imac. In either case, I'll have a single internal hard drive. I know that I want to get more into Final Cut Express, and am trying to think ahead for my scratch drive purposes.
It seems to me that I will need a fast external disk drive, and that there are two ways to accomplish this. Either through an eSATA connection, or through a RAID product (or both!), so here are my questions:
    1. Should I be more interested in the notebook because it enables me to add an eSATA drive via the express 34 slot?
    2. What about RAID drives such as those offered by g-technology? These also seem to be a way to obtain good disk drive speed through striping. If these are good, then am I just as well off getting something like this and using with an iMac via firewire 800?
    3. Should I get the best of both worlds by looking for an eSATA product with RAID O? Or is this overkill (i.e. would I do fine with just one or the other?)
    Best,
    Corey

    Corey,
FW400 and FW800 both have sufficient bandwidth to handle video demands in Final Cut Express.
Since most modern hard drives can actually deliver more throughput than either Firewire spec, using SATA (or in your case eSATA) will usually give you better performance. FW800 can nominally deliver 80 MB/sec whereas SATA 1.5 can deliver 150 MB/sec and SATA 3G theoretically 300 MB/sec.
There are two situations where you may see a difference 1) if you have a camcorder that conflicts with other Firewire devices connected to your Mac at the same time (like many Canon models) or 2) when you are copying files/folders between drives. I don't think you will see much of a difference in routine editing in FCE.
Regarding Raid 0, imho the answer depends mostly on three questions - 1) have you covered your backup needs? Raid 0 does not provide backup, in fact Raid 0 alone (without some additional backup capability) actually increases the likelihood of data loss over time. 2) Are you doing enough video to need the benefits of RAID striping? 3) Do you have the budget - RAID will cost you quite a bit more than a plain external drive (eSATA and/or Firewire).
I think eSATA is probably the way things are headed in the market and if you have the choice you wouldn't go wrong with an eSATA express card/34 + external eSATA hard drive. Many of these external drives today support both eSATA and Firewire, just make sure that the actual drive inside is a SATA drive and not a PATA drive with an eSATA/FW bridge board.

  • DV5-1000US and Firewire

Hello. I have an HP dv5-1000US. Does it have firewire capability? I note that there is a port for eSATA but is that firewire?
    Thanks.

Hello again. I finally bought an eSATA cable. But it isn't working correctly. (Or I'm doing something wrong!)
I have an external hard drive that connects to my laptop and my laptop recognizes it in My Computer with USB. But when I try using eSATA the external drive does not appear in My Computer. Both my laptop and the external drive are eSATA capable.
When I connect using a USB cable the external drive appears in My Computer as Local Drive G and Autoplay runs when first connected. When I attach it using an eSATA cable it does not appear in My Computer at all and Autoplay does not run automatically. A short balloon message appears saying that an external storage drive has connected. But I have no way of accessing it.
Anyone have any ideas why the external drive is not recognized when I use an eSATA cable?
    Thanks.

  • Multiple external displays for X220 + ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station

I have ThinkPad X220 [PN#4290HT6] and will plan to use 02 external monitors.
My plan is to buy ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station and 02 external monitors.
Is ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station working with 02 external monitors by my X220?
Which ports of Docking to be used [VGA or DVI]?
    Thank you!!

I would be verry happy if you could post the results of your check (the "amperage" especially).
Yes, I am aware that there are 2 versions (with and without eSATA). The one I have ordered is unfortunately the newer one, with USB 3.0 (no eSATA). But from reading other threads I know that the eSATA port on the docking station is limited - it is not powered (eSATA-p, but plain eSATA), in contrast to the laptop port, so I will not be missing this feature so much as I thought I would. I will still connect directly to the laptop port instead. Why?
I'm using one-cable connection (powered eSATA cable eSATA-p connector to normal SATA drive connector) to connect external 2.5" drive to easily boot the alternative system. Great solution, by the way, and very cheap, cost of ca. 10EUR incl shipment (Delock is the only brand I've found that produces such cables). I never liked the need to have additional power adapter or USB power connection for SATA connection - too many cables for me. So initially I was looking for the older version of docking station. But after reading about the above limitations of eSATA port on docking station, I gave up, because I would still need additional USB cable to power it up when connecting to the docking station.
Unfortunaltely, all W-series compatible docking stations are very rare on the used market here in Poland, so I didn't have too many possibilities to choose from.

  • Suggested PC spec for Lightroom?

I have been using Lightroom for about 12 months and have found it to be pretty good but occassionally a little unresponsive.
Anyway, I am now looking for a new PC for other uses and am keen to make sure I spec it to run Lightroom smoothly.
What are the suggested specs from users here?
I am of the understanding that dedicated graphics is NOT of any advantage?
Should I go to Quad core or stick to Dual core?
How much difference does hard disk performance make? Worth spending extra to set up a striped RAID or something like a Raptor disk?
    64bit Vista or standard 32bit?
On a slightly different note, does Lightroom run 'better' on Macs?
Do Adobe give any options to swap Windows media for Mac or is it a case of a new purchase?
    Thank you
    Andrew

I currently have quad q6600 at 3GHz, 8 GB RAM, 10K Velociraptor 300GB system drive, 1TB WD 7.2K data drive and Vista 64bit. From my experience with Lightroom, Photoshop and other photo/video apps, this is what I've experienced:
CPU: Lightroom is CPU intensive, I always see all four cores working 100% when importing/exporting files. I would therefore recommend the fastest CPU you can afford, preferably quad core.
RAM: I never see Lightroom use more than 1.5GB or RAM and that is in my catalog with 100,000 pictures. I would think that 3 GB of RAM would be plenty just for Ligtroom. If you however run multiple demanding apps at the same time or use Photoshop, than I would recommend 8GB. When I use Lightroom and Photoshop at the same time, my system shows around 7GB memory usage. It would probably take more if Photoshop was 64bit.
HDD: Modern 7.2K HDD should be sufficient, if you can afford 10K Velociraptor, it would be even better. I don't have any benchmarks, but my system is subjectively much more responsive with 10K Velociraptor. If you have just one HDD, I wouldn't mess around with partitioning. I would get one large 1TB HDD for both system and data, or keep the 1TB just for data and add second drive for system. That way if Lightroom is crunching photo data on the second photo drive, your system drive stays responsive for other applications.
If I was building a new system today, I would try to fing a system board with the latest intel chipset (P45) as it supports 16GB of RAM. Also many of the cheaper boards that show support for 8GB of RAM are not very reliable with 8GB of RAM. You should do some research on this before you buy. My overall system performance (not just Lightroom) jumped up considerably when moving from 4GB to 8GB.
I usually build/upgrade my computer, but If my computer was too old to upgrade, I would probably choose to buy a new one already build from HP or Dell. They have some great prices for quad system (under 1K).
Regarding Mac vs. PC, it comes down to personal preference and cost. Both system have advantages and also both have problems. I believe Lightroom would run the same on comparable hardware. The only problem with Mac is that for me only Mac Pro would be sufficient for photo work and it's not exactly cheap and missing some modern features, e.g. Blueray and eSATA.
    Good luck.

  • RAID question (disk problem?) on K9A2 Platinum

This may be a newbie question but I just can't figure this out.
I have been getting hard stops and upon restart I am told my RAID array is critical or rebuilding.  Sometimes W7 will restart normally when I pick that, most times I have to go through some sort of restore routine.  I have reloaded my video drivers (ATI Catalyst) no difference.  Diskeeper indicates that the HD is critical and badly fragmented.
How do I tell which of my two disks is bad without cracking the case, unplugging one at a time and trying to reboot?  When I go into the Fatbuild utility both drives appear to have the same number.

Frankly, once the remote HDs are plugged in they will probably stay that way.  I just want faster backups.  If I go the AHCI route, presumably I have to enable the Promise controller for the eSATA ports.  Remember reading here that the K9A2 Promise controller runs the eSATA ports.  Is that correct.
The Diskeeper comment was just further grist for the mill that makes me think the RAID drives -- or one at least -- are not long for this World.  To date myself badly I wish I was able to use an original version of Norton Utilities

  • ESATA card compatible with CF card reader

Can anyone recommend an eSATA card that would be compatible with the Addonics flash card reader below:
    http://www.addonics.com/products/flash_memory_reader/aepddesu.asp

Their page says any SATA card on any computer.
The essential question is, "Do you want Mac Bootable" ??
Then you are limited to a few cards by Sonnet and FirmTek, or if you have a 2008 Mac Pro or previous to using a "cheater" SATA cable off the "extra" Optical Drive SATA ports.

  • New DVR, Can't Recognize Existing ESata Drive/Programs

I had a Motorola 7216 DVR box that had an external ESata drive.  The box had three issues:  froze 2-3 times a day for maybe 30 seconds, sound "clipping" during loud sections of shows/movies, and I could never get the Android app or web app to connect to the DVR.  So, I received a new 7232 DVR today.  Prior to disconnecting the old, I did the proper method of ejecting of the ESata Drive.
I hooked up the new DVR, and (possibly mistakenly) hooked up the ESata drive as well before booting it up the first time.   Did the initialization, all went well.   Went through the routine of adding ESata, rebooted, didn't recognize the drive.   Realize I maybe shouldn't have plugged it in, so unplugged ESata cord, rebooted, did Set-Top Box Auto Correct, then went through the proper routine to add external storage.   However, when rebooting, the box blinks one light for 30 seconds, then the entire display lights up, then it reboots, repeating this routine ad infinitum (nothing ever displays on the TV).
So, thinking I got a bad box, I hook up the old DVR, get it working, and then run the add ESata routine.  It now is in the same infinite loop as the old box (for 30 minutes now as I type).
Removing the ESata, and rebooting, back to normal operation, though without ESata and all of the recorded shows.
Any ideas?   Do you think my "mistake" in hooking up the ESata drive to the new box right off the bat might have messed up the drive?   I'm ordering an ESata to Sata cable so I can hook up the drive to my PC and see if it's accessable.  Maybe I can reformat it, knowing we'll lose all our programs (actually, my wife's programs......no big deal to me )
Or does it take a long time to initialize an existing ESata drive with lots of programs on it?
    Solved!

    Greetings, armond_in_nj!
Thanks for your message responding to my plea for help!
OK.... Finally have had time to try everything again AND make notes along the way.
    I have a Motorola STB, model HD DVR QIP 7216 P2 500GB.
I have a Western Digital external eSata hard drive, model  WDBABT0010HBK-NESN – 1TB (on the "approved" list).
And yes, I have tried everything mentioned in the post by "steveKane" just above my original. See below at the end for what happened when I tried to re-format my WD drive on my desktop PC.
When I first got my WD external HD several months ago, I had to call Verizon support to get the DVR to recognize the Western Digital external HD, but we finally got that fixed and all was fine (i.e., programs recording to external HD, status visible under DVR/Recorder Status using my remote). Then, around mid-november, when I would schedule programs to record, either when I was asleep or at work, when I went to view them later, often times one program was broken into 2 or more segments. Then a little later, sometimes while watching a recorded program, the DVR would just freeze. I would reset the Set Top Box (STB) and could continue watching the program. But this all got worse and worse and, finally, I called tech support. After a frustrating hour with a tech support person, who declared everything was fine with my STB because I could press RECORD and the DVR would record a short segment of programming. During that hour conversation, we had reset the STB more than 10 times. I finally asked to speak with this technician's supervisor, who finally agreed with me that the STB needed replacing. When I received the new STB, it would not function at all. So.... another call to support, more attempts on their end to re-set the STB, and finally they agreed that I needed yet another new STB. When that arrived, I went through all the proper steps to set up the STB first, without the external HD and, only when the new STB was working properly did I try to get it to recognize my external HD.
The Western Digital instructions for connecting their drive to my DVR are as follows:
    1. Power off the DVR box by disconnecting the AC power cord. --- Did that
    2. Connect one end of the eSATA cable to your My Book AV and the other end to the DVR box (do not use a USB cable to connect to DVR) -- Did that
    3. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the My Book AV and the other end to the electrical outlet. The power LED inlluminates. ---- I did, and it did
    4. Waii approximately 15 seconds for the hard drive to reach operating speed. -- Did that
    5. Power on the DVR box by reattaching the AC power cord. -- Did that
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
This procedure did not work. There were no on-screen instructions when I powered the STB back on. So, I did the following:
    1. I went to "DVR/Enable more storage" and followed the prompts from there, which at one point told me to connect the external HD to the STB, which it already was. I pressed OK to proceed and got the message that "external storage is active for this STB. To detect the external hard, please press OK to reboot the STB".
    2. Did that, waited; during reboot, a white band appears briefly across the TV screen with the words "Please wait" in red, then it goes away as the reboot process continues. Eventually, I get a message that says "Press MENU to watch FiOS TV, or turn your TV off". I press MENU, the screen appears (with red background) saying "Verizon FiOS is starting up - one moment pleast. Initial download in progress. It takes about one minute", then after a minute or so, the TV image appears.
    3. I go to DVR/Recorder status, and the external HD is not there.
Since the STB prompted me to connect the external HD during step 1 above, I decided to power everything off, disconnect the eSATA cable from the back of the STB, reconnect power to the external HD, then reconnect power to the STB to reboot.
Everything in step 2 above proceeds as outlined there, but still I got no on-screen instructions after FiOS started back up. So, I went to DVR/Enable more storage, followed the prompts until asked to connect the external HD to the STB, at which time, now, I get a pop-up screen that says "The connected external HD has been previously used with another STB with a different DVR. Using the drive on this STB will remove all existing content on the drive. Do you want to use this drive?" Options are "ACCEPT" or "REJECT". I press OK to ACCEPT, then we go through the whole reboot thing again, and still no sign of the external HD under DVR/Recorder status.
I even tried connecting the WD external HD to my desktop computer (running XP Professional) using a USB cable (following "steveKane's" suggestion in his posting of 12-02-12), thinking I could try to reformat the drive on my desktop. After connecting, I go to Window Explorer and the drive is not there. When I open the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Task Bar, the drive is visible there. I tried stopping the device, removing it, then waiting a bit and reconnecting it, but get the same results. Not visible in Explorer so that I can try to re-format.
The posting by "mcorbo" right above "steveKane's" posting says "The only way to reuse the drive is to let the dvr reformat it." So how does one get the DVR to reformat the drive????
I hope I have given you the information needed.
I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
