ESata Card is Force Shutting Down My Computer!

I have a 4 port eSata Card, plugged into one of my PCI slots. I recently had to reformat my computer and now have 10.5.7. Whenever I plug in my 5 HD enclosure (NORCO), it will work for a little bit then the gray screen of death will come up saying I have to restart my computer by holding the power button.
I contacted the company that makes the eSata card (EZQuest) but they had no solution other than to replace the driver. I have tried everything and am now out of options. Any suggestions? Is it my card or computer?

Hi,
If it is this card it is a SiI-3124 based controller.
http://www.ezq.com/product/productspec.php?id=23
It is not unusual to find that this type of card will not work on the Macintosh if the BASE BIOS is not installed. The other possible problem is if conflicting drivers have been installed on the boot disk.
What I would do is install a fresh copy of Mac OS X on a spare empty hard disk and then install the SiI3124 32-bit universal Mac OS X 10.4.9, 10.4.10, & 10.5.1 BASE Driver v2.0.3 found here.
http://www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=27&cat=3
If it works you will know the original boot drive has a driver conflict. If this fails to work then you either have a defective card or the BASE BIOS may not be installed on the controller.
Have fun!

  • Safari will lock up on my MacBook Pro. Force quit doesn't help. When I try to restart the computer, I get an error saying Safari cancelled the restart. I have to press the power button to shut down the computer.

While I'm using safari,  it will freeze up. When I force quit safari and reopen it, I find that I'm back to where I was when I did the force quit and safari remains locked up. When I try to restart the computer, I get a pop up that says that safari cancelled my restart. I then press the power button to shut down the computer. When I reboot the computer and open safari, I see all the tabs and windows that were opened when this issue began, only this time safari isn't frozen. This problem started yesterday.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is there a fix for this problem?

Try Resetting Safari: Open Safari. Cick on the name Safari in the menu bar. In the drop down menu click Reset Safari.

  • My Computer has been freezing all of a sudden in the last week and i have to keep doing force shut downs!!!

My dad usually helps me fix this stuff, well go figure he is on vacation and a day after he leaves, the computer starts giving me problems. im so angry with it right now i might throw it off my balcony...
The loading icon randomly starts spinning sometimes and wont stop, requiring me to do force shut downs in order to make the computer usable again.  sometimes it does it right away, sometimes it does it after ive been using the computer for a bit... for a while i can switch windows until it completely freezes.  i cant click anything, cant force quit any programs or anything, and i the spinning beachball never goes away!  the computer isn't hot either when it crashes! SO FRUSTRATING! it was perfectly fine until the last week or so. im anything but a computer genious, but i ran the disc utility and it says the drives are fine.  things ive done in the last week.  done the updates that the app store was pestering me with, updated corel painter 12 with the most current patches because that started randomly crashing. well now painter works and its the computer crashing X.x
I dont have extensions on my safari aside from adblock. and i only have 2 apps downloaded and corel painter is the only software on the mac side of the computer.  parallels has an adobe suite on it but Corel is the only thing that has gone through changes recently...
i dont know what to do... i need to work on projects and the computer keeps making me lose progress and keeps giving me frustration. please help if you can...
I've never used the forums before so i don't know the right category, but if its wrong im sorry.  if you can just move it into the right one...

Back up all data immediately, if you haven't already done it.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My external drive won't eject.  should I shut down my computer? It says if I force eject, I might lose info stored!

My exernal drive will not eject.  Should I shut down my computer?  It says if I force eject I might lose info!

Hey I typically have this problem as well. For starters what steps have you went to to eject the drive? Have you just done it from finder or have you gone to the Disk Utility and tried to eject from there as well? If not then I would recommend this first. I would also recommend before doing anything to save any neccessary information that was placed on the drive locally if possible.

  • July 18,2011 AOL toolbar update install. I cannot open Firefox to uninstall the update or the toolbar because everytime I open Firefox it freezes and jams up. I have to shut down my computer as it will not even respond to force quit command

July 18,2011 AOL toolbar update install. I cannot open Firefox to uninstall the update or the toolbar because everytime I open Firefox it freezes and jams up. I have to shut down my computer as it will not even respond to force quit command. I cannot read my mail (aol) or access my bookmarks all for work.

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
You should be able to uninstall that AOL toolbar extension while running in the Firefox SafeMode.

Sounds like Word is corrupt, I would uninstall the app and then reinstall. Also there is a MS Office for Mac forum,  you can find it at: Office for Mac Product Forums

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks I have to force shut down to close frozen applications

    Hi all,
Since upgrading to Mavericks I have experienced several times that sometimes when an application close a simple force quit is not enough. The application will disappear from my dock but remain on screen with the spinning ball, and any instances of the application I try to open will also freeze instantly. The only way to clear them is to do a force shut down via the power button on the back of my computer. I have experienced this with Mail, VLC and Finder so I do not think this an issue with a specific program. If anyone is having the same problem or has an idea of how to fix it, it would be much appreciated

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Scrambled screen, forced shut down then blue screen. whats the problem?

    Hi,
My 2 years old Macbook Pro started to fail in the past few days in a strange way, to which I would be hapy to find an explanation or suggestion to fix it.
After a few hours of usage, usually when I open a program (iPhoto for example), the screen gets messed up, scrambled or just split in half (right side on the left and left side on the right). Usually the only option I have is to forcibly shut down the computer, but then I only see first grey screen stuck and after the second forced restart it is only blue screen after the apple logo upon restart.
I have managed to fix the problem twice so far (yesterday and today) by using the CMD-S combo at start-up and then fix the corrupted file system with the /sbin/fsck -fy command (which I had to repeat 2-3 times til the file system was fixed). After that I could restart the computer.
I am afraid that it may just happen again, but not sure what is the problem. could it be the video card, or the RAM or perhaps my HDD is dying?
I am no expert, please let me know your opinions and suggestions! I would really appreciate it!
    cheers
    Adam

I have this exact same problem. It's only started occuring recently but its dreadful. I think it has to do with graphic switching. Whenever I open a program that asks for dicrete GPU my computer does the above or just freezes. When I reboot, I have to put my password in twice due to filevault I think, It passes the first but freezes after the second.
I downloaded a program called gfxcardstatus to confirm this, and it only occurs when I try to switch graphics. (My idead was to force integrated only, but when I try that it freezez)

The only thing I tried so far was run Onyx with no success. I am going to try what you did.

  • My Macbook Retina doesn't log back in from sleep after typing in the password, have to force shut down

    Hi all,
Recently i've been having this problem once in a while (once every few days) that when I opened up my computer from sleep, I typed in my password and clicked enter. After that, it shows that normal grey box thing; normally it logs in after a few seconds, but sometimes i wait for 2 minutes and still it doesn't log in. I sleep it and wake it again, but this time i type the password and i click enter, but nothing happens, i can't click switch user either. At this point my only choice is to force shut down my macbook. This problem is a bit annoying since sometimes i have unsaved work.
Thanks in advance for any reply/ies.

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

Thank you for your reply BDAqua.
Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?
Thank you again for your input BDAqua

  • Shut down the computer from a java program

    Hello!
Can anyone tell me if can be made an java program that can shut down the computer (windows 2000 operating system) and forces all the programs to close?
If it can be made, can you give me some tips?
    Thanks
    Kata

    That's possible
but you don' really use java but Windows (only available for 2000 and XP)
    you should try that
    try {
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("shutdown -s -t01") // stop
    }catch(...
    or
    try {
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("shutdown -r -t01") // reboot
    }catch(...
    or
    try {
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("shutdown -l -t01") // logout
    }catch(...
    you're welcome.
