ESATA card w/ drive connected causes Windows 7 bootup to hang

I installed the NewerTech MAXPower eSATA 6G PCIe 2.0 card in slot 2 (PCI Express 2.0) of my Mac Pro (January 2008). My Mac Pro is configured with Mac OS X 10.6.x. It also has 64-bit Windows 7 installed via Boot Camp.
The NewerTech eSATA card works fine with Mac OS X. However, if an external drive connected to the eSATA card is powered ON at the time I natively boot-up to Windows 7, booting up hangs with the following message:
Marvell 88SE91xx Adapter - BIOS Version 1.0.0.1003.
Initializing...
If the external drive is OFF at the time I boot-up Windows 7, boot-up doesn't hang. I get the following message during bootup:
Disk Information:
No hard disk detected!
Then, my Mac Pro continues to boot up into Windows 7; it does not hang. However, I can't use the drive. If I turn on the drive (a LaCie D2 Quadra 1 TB hard drive) after logging into Windows 7, it is not detected by Windows 7. This is different behavior than with Mac OS X. If my LaCie drive was off when I boot-up into Mac OS X, and I turn on the LaCie drive after logging into Mac OS X, the drive is detected properly and shows up in Finder. I also have the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro Qx2. If I turn it OFF prior to booting into Windows 7 (to prevent a hang), and then turn it back ON after booting into Windows 7, then Windows 7 recognizes the Qx2.
So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to bootup Windows 7 natively while an external drive is connected? I reported the problem to OWC and they said that their "engineers are working on it", but it's been weeks, and it seems nothing is being done. BTW, I only tried slot 2 on my Mac. Wonder if it will help to try another slot.
Thanks.

I haven't had any problems using the card other than Windows 7 bootup hanging if an external drive is connected to the card. Do you think it's a good chance that it's an issue with the external drive having the USB/eSATA/firewire interfaces, and not the card itself? Unfortunately, all my external drives (all of which hang during Windows 7 bootup via bootcamp) have the USB/eSATA/firewire interfaces.
I did some write tesing (large video files) using the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (4 drives in a RAID 5 config), which has a USB/eSATA/firewire interface. Using the eSATA interface, I was getting 202 MB/sec. Using Firewire 800, I was getting 65 MB/sec. So the eSATA was 202/65 = 3.1 times faster than Firewire 800. So, eSATA is certainly desirable to use. Not sure how much better I'd get with an enclosure that has only eSATA, and whether or not I'd get rid of the Windows 7 "hanging during bootup" bug.... Not an easy test to do given how much these external enclosures cost.
If anyone has any suggestions on alternate eSATA cards that work with Mac OS X SL, Windows 7 (natively via boot camp and via Parallels), let me know. Driverless would be great. I've done a lot of searching around for an ideal eSATA card, but seems that each one has different pros/cons.
thanks.

• Java Swing apps cause Windows 2K to hang

I have an IBM clone machine running a P4 and Windows 2k that hangs whenever I try to exit out of a window in a Java swing app. Whether the window is the main application window or a menu window instantiated by the application to be a child of the main window, does not matter. It hangs regardless. I have tried multithreaded apps and they do not cause my windows machine to hang. Neither do simple swing apps. But any multithreaded swing app causes it to hang. JEdit causes it. Forte causes it. I am running Java 1.4.1. Thanks for any help in this.

Installation This is turning into a FAQ, so I thought I'd post it on the community site. A lot of people have complained that jEdit can hard freeze their windows system after upgrading to Java 1.4.1. If you experience this, the problem is not with jEdit, but with your video driver. Updating the driver to the latest version should solve the problem; downgrading to Java 1.4.0 might also work.

• JRE 1.4.1 causes windows 98 to hang

I just installed the latest JRE 1.4.1, now every time I use the one Java program I have my computer hangs. Sometimes I can open it and then close before the hang - then I get a ddhelp.exe is not responding error message. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling all sorts of things without success. Only solution that works is to reduce the graphics hardware acceleration to the "basic" setting, but then other software I have that has heavy graphics requirements does not work.
Any idea what is wrong?
I run windows 98SE, Radeon7500 graphics card, AMD1700 processor. May also have a related problem - the windows update site keeps telling me to install a Java VM update dated March 4 that has already been installed so maybe something is not registered properly but then I have reinstalled most things luding this update) without success.

JRE 1.4.2_07 crashed Windows XP-SP2, with a graphics device driver operating ATI Radeon 9800 XT (Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll).
Further tech details below this message.
The Sun Java web sites suggested the next java version upgrade to fix the crash problem.
This forum provided the solution that is very applicable to the latest Windows XP, SP2 as with the Windows 98 SE problem: Conflict with DirectX. The JRE1.5 Contol Panel was a "ghost screen" until I the following process worked to display the window contents:
"After spending the last few hours trawling through forums and newsgroups I noticed a lot of debate about how a certain Windows graphics software called DirectX may be <in conflict> with the JDK/JRE."
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type dxdiag, and then click OK

• Sound Blaster PCI causes Windows 98SE to hang at boot

ASUS P5VD-X motherboard, PentiumD805, GB RAM, 250GBHD, Win98 and XP Dual Boot, Ati Radeon 256 8x AGP.
Hi. After installing the standard old Sound blaster PCI card under Win98SE with the drivers disc and rebooting PC, Win 98 just hangs at the boot screen. I can still get into safe mode and have tried uninstalling PCI from add remove programs but unfortunately still cant get to load normally. I have the onboard SoundMAX audio which is still enabled in bios and?its drivers?installed on win98 so i guess i could use that instead of Sound Blaster if i could boot normally into win98. The is now removed from but win98 still hangs on boot up.
When i installed the SBPCI drivers disc and before i rebooted win98 before the crash i noticed that it placed windows media player icons on desktop. I have also tried uninstalling media player.
Interestingly i cant even get the bootlog option or command prompt to work at all it just freezes even though safe mode and safe mode command prompt only work.
I have tried restoring the registry with scanreg/restore to a week ago when there were no boot up problems. This however has still not resolved the boot up hang as soon as windows 98 logo appears.
Can anyone help?

A bunch of things are probably conflicting. The Creative cd seems to have installed WMP7 (later cd's might do that.)? Or possibly a version of WMP6. Your SoundMAX driver is conflicting with the Creative driver. 98 doesn't play well with 2 soundcards. You should have uninstalled the SoundMAX, deactivated it in the BIOS, then installed the Creative card and drivers. 98 can be trashed easily by this kind of thing. I would format (have all your drivers and program setup files saved to a cdr and remove all hardware except for keyboard, mouse and videocard) and install Windows. Install?all the optional Windows components you want from Add/Remove Windows Components tab and the Plus 98!?software if you have it. Then use the packages such as the Unofficial 98SE Service Pack and the Autopatcher Alpha .6 for Windows 98SE on msfn.org Windows 98SE Service Pack forum to update your system. That Autopatcher contains just about all the updates and the Service Pack (installed first) contains?some nice registry tweaks, 256 color tray icons, Windows 2000 color scheme,?nicer desktop icons, a cleaner Dialup Networking .4 install than Microsoft gives you, etc. Then install your hardware and drivers. Have your on board audio disabled in the BIOS from the start if you want to install a Creative card instead.

• ZAA causing Windows 7 to hang

I have been tracking an issue with my Windows 7 systems (both x86 & x64) where the system will randomly hang. Usually this is when the end user launches a program. The latest shows the program starting to launch, windows 7 shows the spinning wheel but never launches the app. Eventually the computer will stop responding all together. you can move the mouse and the num lock or caps lock lights will react but nothing within the OS will react. Most of my end users are just powering off the computer which is causing even more problems with the OS.
The other item I am seeing more and more of is the zenWindowsDeamon windows will hang with nothing listed. This seemed to start happening when I moved from 11.2.3a to 11.2.4. I am now running 11.2.4 MU1.
I requested the other tech to create a support request when he can but also figured I would post here to see if this is something someone else has an idea what might be happening.
Thanks

I have currently standardized on the NC2SP3(IR3) as when I first tested the IR5, I had issues which have now been resolved, I just have not rolled out the IR5 yet.
I had numerous problems, that I believe started after the update to 11.2.4 (NO MU1) we stayed at this version for about 2 weeks, I deployed some ZAA clients and had numerous reports of issues. After researching it a bit more, I updated to 11.2.4 MU1, in which I had to open an SR as the update did not lay down clean and It would not even start when trying to re-deploy it again. I attempted to deploy the new 11.2.4.MU1 Agent and had some successso I thought. At this time I stated to have calls about being prompted with a ZCC / ZAA agent Login screen after the Novell logon indicating that the credentials were incorrect or the certificate was invalid. After some online forum research, someone indicated they had a similar issue and digging into the program files directory and re running the CASA.msi cleaned up the prompt.it seems to work for me as well.however the casa.msi install was either masking the issue or fixing itnot sure. It also turns out for some reason or another the majority of the desktops internally ended up in the wrong Location, and this offline location had no policy / servers associated as it is for offline access, so these 2 issues I believe were somewhat related..., To make matters worse, ZAA would not detect the correct location without a Physical (Or scripted / Partial hands on) hands on event after the update... I left a handful of desktops for days, they would not return the correct location I had to go to each workstation and run the following:
zac cc
zac ref bypasscache
zac cc
zac ref general bypasscache
zac unr
zac reg https://xxx.xxx.xxx:444
zac ref bypasscache
zac cc
zac ref general bypasscache
This was the only good order where I got clean results. This seemed to clean up any issues in regards to logins and being stuck in the bad location....
I have been down the road of the ZAA Cleanup utility as well.Did not seem to have the results that I was looking for on the XP machines, I have not seen a lot of issues on the windows 7 installs. However I have kind of held off on going hog wild on deploying it as I have started to see issues, and still have many older 11.2.2 Agents out there that are running well other than the location issue.
And nothe CASA.msi Install has not helped the Freeze / Lockups on the XP machines just the above issues with Location.

• Drive beta cause lumia 920 to hang and get hot to ...

I recently downloaded drive beta to get me to the Fenway ballpark in Boston. The stopped navigating. I had to stop the app and restart many times. Hung on navigation. Left open on last attempt to see if it would figure things out. It ended up getting hot enough to almost burn my hand. Did someone forget to test this on a real handset?

Unfortunately with ATT firmware there do appear to be some anomalies.

• ThinkPad T510: eSata External Hard Drive Not Working with Windows 7...

Hey folks,
My LaCie Quadra 1TB drive arrived on Monday and the Quadra disconnects 1 minute into any copy / move function using the eSata connection. The USB 2.0 connection works just fine, however, I invested the extra money in a Quadra specifically to take advantage of eSata connection and would like to get this working.
I received the following from LaCie support:
"...the issue with eSATA and large or small drives on Windows 7 is a known issue.  However, it is not limited to LaCie drives and we believe this to be a Windows 7 driver issue from Microsoft... using a third party eSATA card with its own drivers does eliminate the issue."
So, before I spend another £50 on an eSata ExpressCard trying to fix something that should work out of the box:
Any idea how to get my eSata drive working on my ThinkPad T510 or ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3?
Does the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 eSata connector have its own drivers, as this - ideally - is where I'd like my external drive to be permanenelty connected.
Kind regards,
John Diddy

Hi Bananaman,
Nope. tried a new eSATA cable and the issues are exactly the same.
LaCie recommend an ExpressCard with it's own drivers to resolve the problem. Trying to avoid this route as I intend to use the drive for regular backups and running virtual machines so it'll be used heavily and I'd rather not have a cable sticking out of the side instead of the docking station!
Any further thoughts?

• Can I connect a drive via eSata/USB to one connected to MBP via FW800?

I have a drive that only has USB/eSata (Drive 1). I have another drive (Drive 2) that's got USB, eSata, and FW800... it's currently connected to my MBP via FW800.
Is the following possible?
Drive1===>USB/eSATA===>Drive2===>FW800===>MBP
The purpose of Drive1 is only to back up the contents of Drive2, I do not need to transfer anything directly from the MBP to Drive1.
Questions:
1) Is this possible without errors?
2) If so, what performance can I expect?
3) Which is safer/better, using USB or using eSata?

No. Although drive enclosures may have pass-through ports they are for daisy-chaining via the same port. Also, you cannot connect the drive by more than one port at a time without causing a potential dangerous condition for the drive. However, you can connect separate drives by separate ports. That is you can have one drive connected by FW, another via USB, and still a third by eSATA (if you have the requisite ExpressCard/34 card.)
Which is better? From fastest to slowest; eSATA, FW800, FW400, USB 2.0, USB 1.1.
The ideal method for accomplishing you stated goal is to get a two drive enclosure populated with two identical drives. Use Disk Utility to create a mirrored RAID array. What ever is saved to the array volume is mirrored on both drives automatically. The array should not be used as a startup volume, but it can be used to backup a startup volume.

• "mountain lion" esata card drives won't mount

Just installed mountain lion on my brand new (2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon) MacPro tower with an Apple store bought eSata card.
Yesteray everythign fine under regular Lion.
Today, with Mountain Lion, my drives on the eSata card will not mount.
If I connect the drive sthrough firewire they do mount (phew!)
But I need them to operate under eSata for speed and because I have a lot of external drives.
It only appears to be a Mountain Lion issue.
Anyone else report problems?

Hmmm..there were never any drivers for my card. In fact I don't even know what my card is..because it just came from Apple.
Okay..I found drivers..

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

• Can't access a USB Drive connected to Time Capsule from a Windows PC.  Apple Care can't/won't assist.  HELP!!!

Trying to get my Windows 7 PC to access the USB Drive that is connected to my Time Capsule.  I have a Fat32 Formatted USB drive connected to a 2TB Time Capsule and I'm trying to get access to that drive from a Windows 7 PC.  I've attempted to map the network drive (based on some 3-4 year old articles I could find online) but any time I access a file from the PC, the Time Capsule "freaks out" and disconnects all connections to it which forces me to unplug it to restart the Tim Capsule.  I'm at a loss now as to what to do.
Spent a few hours talking to Apple about this and much more.  Apple Care can't or won't help with this particular problem (the guy I talked to, as nice and helpful as he wanted to be, had no experience supporting their hardware in a Windows environment).
Someone has to know how to fix this so, PLEASE, help if you can!

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
Good luck.

• Access external hard drive connected to Airport Extreme USB via Windows & Mac

I have an Airport Extreme and I would like to connect an external hard drive to it via USB so that I can backup pictures, music, documents etc. I need to be able to see the external hard drive from my windows PC. I eventually will be buying a Mac so I would like to be able to also get to my pictures and documents via the MAC as well.
I currenlty have an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV so getting to the external drive from these devices would be a huge bonus also if that is possible.
I recently bought an ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive and I had to return it because it was only formatted for the PC. When I plugged it into my Airport Extreme, I could see the drive via the Airport Disk Utility but I could not see it from my PC and I could not map a drive to it. When I contacted ioSafe support, they said that what I was trying to do was not possible since I did not have a MAC available to me to reformat the drive.
I hope that I am not trying to accomplish the impossible because I will always need to live in a MAC/PC world.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

You must know people with Macs.. it is 2min work to plug a USB drive into a Mac Laptop and format it Mac OS extended with a quick format.. And that is better IMHO than buying a utility or buying a pre-formatted drive which are often more expensive for no very good or obvious reason.
Another option is a Linux boot disk.. Linux distributions have very similar command line tools to the Mac OS. (some are identical) and HFS+ has been available for ages in Linux.

Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.
