ESATA combo Drive on iMac?

I have a Late 2006 20~inch iMac with a USB2.0 & 1394 & eSATA combo Drive {SBP-LUN}.
I have a Macally external drive that has an eSATA port.
My iMac has no eSATA port.
I am presently using the Firewire 400 ports {1394}to connect the external drive to the computer.
How do I utilize the eSATA part of the combo Drive?
Thanks,
Robert

eSATA is for external drives, hence the 'e'.  I am guessing OWC is making an eSATA from an internal SATA connection.
I am asking how to use the existing eSATA bus on my computer.
You are probably guessing right.  And I'm guessing it is not a straight forward process (like inserting a Y connector in some key place).  If it were I would thing there would be plenty of posts on the various forums on how to do it.  If you google "add estata to imac" there are plenty of discussions on this topic but a quick sampling of them showed the ones I looked reference the OWC turnkey enhancement.  Check them for yourself.  Maybe one I didn't sample shows a way.
Are you saying that the Firewire & USB bus on my computer is connecting to an internal SATA port via an eSATA port on the bus?
I never said that.  FW and USB are separate busses.

  • 17" combo drive Intel iMac- is this the right external DVD drive to get?

Earlier in the week, I bought a refurbished 17” white Intel iMac from the Apple Store. It came without the Superdrive, only the combo drive.
As this will be a holiday gift for a niece with small kids, I thought being able to burn DVD’s using iDVD would be nice for her. I understand she can attach an external FW DVD drive to do this, and I just want to make sure to give her the right info for buying in case she wants it (she has someone that can put it together for her)-

  • Mechanical problem w/ internal combo drive - replacement needed

Combo drive on iMac appears to be failing - works only about 25% of the time. When a CD/DVD is loaded (open/close/tray work fine), the drive makes a lot of noise (clicking) then ejects after several tries to load. If it does load - DVD/CD play fine. This is a mechanical rather than software issue. The current internal drive is a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A. Where can a replacement internal combo drive be bought online compatible with this iMac? Other options/Recommendations? Thank you in Advance for any info you can provide.

Leslie, Welcome to Apple Discussions. You may wish to opt for an firewire external DVD-RW drive. Here's an example. This will be far easier to do; the internal upgrade is not for the faint hearted:

    Full Apple Service Manual
As and when you do it you may want to give consideration to boosting the HDD and 'factory' RAM at the same time. You must remember to replace the thermal paste as you close the iMac up.
As for Drive selection: xlr8yourmac runs a drive database. Click this link and enter DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW, iMac G4 and OS 10.4 in the relevant fields and click search. The Pioneer DVR110 seems popular and compatible.

  • Combo-Drive not reading Discs

Hello, earlier today i was importing songs from a cd-r to iTunes. During the import, my computer froze and wouldn't respond so i restarted it. When i restarted the computer and logged on the disc that i left in wasn't appearing on the desktop. I put in several other discs including a dvd, cd-r, and a lens cleaner but none of them were read. When insert them the drive doesn't even make a noise and the disc isn't moved at all when i eject them. Is this a software issue or do i need to replace my combo-drive?

  • I need to refresh my iMac's OS but I can't use the combo drive

I need to upgrade the OS on an old iMac G4 I bought and the internal combo drive is dead. Is there a way to do this using either a Flash drive or a HD drive? I have SuperDuper so I thought I would copy my system from an existing iMac G4 to this computer, but SuperDuper isn't being so Super right now and is coking on some files.
Any other ideas? (I don't have an external DVD drive but do own a MacBook and have a wireless network if that helps.) THANKS.

Does the "new" iMac have Firewire (I think all G4 iMac had FW ports)? If so, you can connect it via a Firewire cable to another Mac and boot the iMac G4 into "Target" mode which will make it appear as an external hard drive on which ever computer it is tethered to.
You can then run the install DVD on the computer and install the system to the "Target" which is the old iMac.

  • Rev. B iMac with noisy Combo Drive?

Just got a brand spankin' new iMac 1.8 17" with Combo drive. I put in a cd and ripped it using iTunes, but noticed that it sounded like my iMac was accellerating to Mach 2. The sound didn't seem out of the ordinary for what a drive would make, just a bit louder than I'm used to. Of course, I'm also used to having a Dell box sit on the floor, not right in front of my face.
So, ym question - does this sound like a normal noise to you?
    Jayson

It's the drive, as well (probably) the processor cooling fan.
Mine cranks up a bit when I am ripping CDs.
b Just got a brand spankin' new iMac 1.8 17" with Combo drive.
You do mean the Rev B, not the Rev C iSight, correct?
The new iMacs are 1.9 or 2.1 and do not come with a Combodrive, only a Superdrive.
Why/how did you get it brand new a month after they quit selling them?
And I hope you got a really good deal as the iSight is $200 cheaper.

  • IMac combo drive extremely loud out of the box

Well our new iMac 17" just arrived and it is gorgeous. When I put in the CD to install Office there was this VERY loud whirring that didn't stop until I completed the installation and removed the CD. I put in another CD and it did this for several seconds and then quieted down. Is this normal?
    Thanks in advance

  • IMacs' combo drive doors are stuck closed

We have ten flat-panel G4 iMacs (700 MHz) at work, and at least five of them cannot open their optical drive doors. When the eject button is pressed, I can hear what I presume to be the motor trying to push the door open, but nothing happens. The first iMac to do this had it's combo drive replaced and now works, two others never stopped working, and I didn't check the remaining two iMacs. On one that is not working, I tried opening the drive using open firmware and by holding the mouse button down while restarting (as other threads have suggested), but I could still only hear the motor trying open the door. Having 6 drive doors all fail at the roughly the same time seems like a software problem rather than a hardware problems. (Everyone does their own updates, but I think all or most are running OS 10.4.11.) Does anyone have an idea about what to try next.

I'd try installing a fresh copy of 10.4 on an external firewire hard drive. Now boot the iMacs from that fresh copy of OS X. If the issue persists you can assume it's hardware.
If you use a finger nail to lower the white dome optical drive door do the trays open then?
My iMac G4 certainly still works fine since 10.4.11 was installed.

  • Installing from iLife CD on an iMac G3 with Combo Drive

I am helping my son to upgrade to iPhoto 4 on his iMac G3. I sent him the iLife 2004 installation CD, not realizing that he had a combo drive. The install program tells him he must use the DVD. Is there anyway to bypass this? If not, I guess I'll have to send him the DVD.

    I installed iPhoto 4 manually.
Try this: insert CD, try to find the iPhoto Package

I created an iDVD project an iMac with a Combo Drive. As I sent the slideshow directly from iPhoto to iDVD, I did not know until I was ready to burn a 240 picture slideshow. Is there ANY way I can move the dvd project (~ 800mb) off the iMac where I created the project to move it to an iMac with a SuperDrive?

    Hi Grant
You can also burn a Disk Image to DVD via an ext. FW burner. Lacie makes a few models that work well on most macs. I built my own from a Pioneer 110 and an ADS 1394 Pyro enclosure. Not that expensive to make your own. Runs about half the price of a Lacie Ext. Burner and it requires No Drivers!

  • Sept. 2006 17" 1.83GHz Intel iMac Combo drive won't read discs...

When I insert a CD (audio or data), the drive spits the disc out after about 15-20 sec.  Nothing shows up.  Nothing said.  The disc just comes back out.  Hardware Info shows the drive is there:
    MATSHITACD-RW  CW-8124:
      Model:          MATSHITACD-RW  CW-8124
      Revision:          DACH
      Serial Number:
      Detachable Drive:          No
      Protocol:          ATAPI
      Unit Number:          0
      Socket Type:          Internal
      Low Power Polling:          Yes
      Power Off:          No
But nothing else.  Doesn't show the serial number either.  Can't find any tools to test the drive with.  A friend suggests I remove the drive and try manually cleaning the lens (Using CD/DVD cleaning disc did nothing).  But I don't want to go to all that trouble, if there isn't a more than likely chance of it working.  Too much disassembly/reassembly effort  I'd rather just replace the drive while I'm in there.
I don't have the original discs that came with this system, so I can't run AHT.  I'm told it won't tell me anything either, just that the drive is there, which the Hardware Info already says.
Should I try to go in and manually clean the lens or just replace the drive?  Has anyone else manually cleaned their lens and had their drive work or is replacement really the only option at this point?
I'm told I should just get a USB external CD/DVD drive and be done with it... but I'd like to restore this computer to fully working order, if possible.

The Early iMac's are one of the most difficult iMac's to open and work on. Another problem given it's age, is that display cables and other connections are very brittle and it is very likely that more harm than good will come from working on it.
On that note: I suggest finding and using an OS X compatible External tray loading CD/DVD drive for several reasons.
    1. External CD/DVD drives are faster and more reliable than slim-line super drives.
    2. For about the same cost or less, a good External CD/DVD drive should also give you the ability to burn CDs and DVDs.
    3. Using an External CD/DVD drive is a lot easier than ripping into the iMac and replacing the internal drive.
Personally I am happily using an older LG GE24LU20 with both my Early Core Duo and Mac Mini, but others here have also recommended that the GP10 DVD and Blu-ray, the LaCie's and the OWC FireWire drives are all very good solution for a busted internal super or combo drive.

  • What kind of interface does the Combo drive on a 17" iMac use?

I found a "universal" adaptor for drives and I was wondering if I could plug the Combo Drive from a 17" iMac (1.6GHz) into it. Here's the adaptor/interface
    http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adaptv2.php

I am familiar with Newer Technology, and their products are good. I suggest contacting them to make sure your drive is compatible, it looks as if it should be, but call to make sure.

  • Matshita CW-8122 Combo Drive

I was wondering if it might be possible to use a Matshita CW-8122 slot loading Combo Drive in a G3 CRT iMac. I realize that none of the G3 CRT iMacs shipped with slot loading Combo Drives. I want to be able to watch DVDs from any region in the world & be able to burn CDs with optical drive.
The Matshita CW-8122 Combo Drive meets all those requirements. It's listed on www.thefirmwarepage.com as being flashable to RPC1. I'm guessing nobody has ever tried this before. Is there any reason why one of these optical drives wouldn't work in a slot loading G3 CRT iMac?
Does the Matshita CW-8122 receive its power through a IDE cable when installed in a Aluminum PowerBook G4? I ask because I own a Indigo iMac DV Special Edition 400 MHz that currently has a slot loading CD burner installed. If it's impossible to use the Matshita CW-8122 slot loading Combo Drive in a slot loading G3 CRT iMac I will just install a Matshita SR-8184 slot loading DVD-ROM drive instead.
I can burn CDs using the Neto Dragon software OWC sells. Otherwise it's impossible to burn CDs on a slot loading G3 CRT iMac. Roxio Toast for instance requires a G4 or G5 or Intel processor.

    Hi,
    Go here:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
Select DVD CDR, Matshita and CW-8122 and hit search. You'll get 3 returns and the iMac is the second one.
I own a Indigo iMac DV Special Edition 400 MHz
That poster explains the cabling problems.
BTW I have used an Apple branded SR8583-B DVD-ROM to play DVDs in a 400 iMac. I salvaged that drive from an old B&W G3 tower.
Roxio Toast for instance requires a G4 or G5 or Intel processor.
Hmm I used to burn CDs in my Beige G3 using Roxio toast 3 and 4 via SCSI.
I have a La Cie CD burner that's firewire I'll try it and post back.

  • EMac Combo drive for a DVD burner ( superdrive)

Hi . I have purchased a used eMac 1 ghz . it has a stock combo drive . i burn a lot of DVDs .I have a external plextor DVD burner ( super drive ) and i was woundering if it would fit in the eMac ? do i need to remove the little bezel at the end of the tray ? I have always owned a older Slower G3 type mac , this will be my fastest mac i would ever have . So i want to be happy with it .
    Thank you kindly

I guess burning to external is not so bad . i have been haveing problems when OSX tryed to verifi the burn and it fails so i though putting it into the computer would resolve that . I will keep the burner in the external case if it means i have to take the top off the optical drive itself .

  • Has anyone upgraded to iDVD 5 with Combo Drive & external disc burner

I have an iMac G5 with a combo drive. I have purchased a Lacie d2 drive to burn slide shows from iDVD. The Mac recognizes the Lacie on the firewire input but says under system utilities "Disc burning: not supported". I would upgrade to iDVD 5 if this will support an external disc burner. Any suggestions.

Apple pays for permission to burn DVD's (something about MPEG2). However, they don't pay for each copy of iDVD sold. They pay for each DVD burner sold. Thus, they don't allow burning to external DVD burners...officially. Under the File menu, choose "Save As Disk Image". Once you have the disk image, you can use the resulting Video TS and Audio TS to burn a DVD using Toast. A version of Toast or some other burning software should be included with your external burner. I hope this helps.
