Has anyone used a SONNET Tempo™ SATA Pro ExpressCard/34 (Note I said "PRO" yes the expensive one) on a new MacBookPro with 4GB RAM running 10.5.8?
Hi,
I use the Sonnet Tempo Pro ExpressCard with the SeriTek/2EN2 enclosure and the Mid-2009 17" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5.8) with 4GB of memory. I have not experienced kernel panics with this configuration.
AMUG has just posted a FW800 review that also provides eSATA ExpressCard performance details. Look at the eSATA section in the Performance portion of the article for more information. The heading is: "How does an eSATA ExpressCard Compare?"

  • Express card for MacBook Pro

I have a 15in MacBook Pro (Early 2008). and i have bought an Express Card from ST Lab which i cannot seem to get to work.
When i look in the Systems Report, were does the Express Card show up??
And were is the driver? will it automatically load up?
    Thx
    John

I just bought the same st-lab USB3.0 expresscard on offer from Maplin, to try in a 17" unibody MBP, 2009 running Snow Leopard.
I downloaded and installed the LaCie USB 3.0 driver, which recognized the card, since it uses the same chipset as Lacie's adapter and LaCie don't seem to have enforced any vendor tie-in (they might have for usb3.0 drives, though, not sure yet).
In System Profiler (About this Mac -> More Info) it shows up under PCI regardless of driver, and, with the LaCie driver installed, it appears also under USB as a "USB Super-Speed Bus".
I haven't tried it with a USB 3.0 drive yet (none to hand) but it runs USB2.0 drives just fine, power issues notwithstanding (it won't supply enough to run e.g. an Iomega 1TB USB2.0 pocket drive - needs a 2-ended USB cable with extra power supplied from one of the Mac's USB ports, or external 5v plugged into its power socket).
I haven't tried it on a Thunderbolt equipped mac (mine is too old for that), but the LaCie driver claims to be Lion compatible.
I also downloaded CalDigit drivers - these are based on open source code so while people report that the driver as-supplied doesn't work with non-CalDigit drives, they do provide source code under the GPL. which one could readily modify to suit other vendors. The also provide a brief PDF doc describing (very vaguely) the process to build the driver from source - this is enough for a reasonably experienced programmer but won't be of any use to the average user. The CalDigit documntation suggests issues with thunderbolt systems, implying that some or other Apple update may have stopped their driver working (this is speculation - when the LaCie driver worked I didn't investigate further.)
All trademarks acknowledged, and it goes without saying that neither Apple, ST-Lab, Lacie nor CalDigit will support any of this in this context.

  • USB 3.0 express card for Macbook Pro on Lion?

Does anybody know a USB 3.0 express card that works with Macbook Pro using Lion?
I just got an IOGear express card from Amazon that did NOT make it clear that it was Windows only.
Only after I tried to install it was it painfully obvious it was Windows only.

Hey mark327 do you know if i can use this card as well with this driver?

  • Updating Graphics Card for MacBook Pro

    Hello.
I have the most recent 13 inch: 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro.
The thing is, I absoutley hate the Intel HD 4000 Graphics card that comes with it.
The only game I play on my MacBook Pro is Battlefield 3, but the graphics card has a hard time trying to run the program
Other than the graphics card, all my computer specs meet the requirements to play the game.
    MY QUESTION IS
Is it possible to replace my graphics card with a Nvidia graphics card? Probably by opening up my laptop and putting it in.
I heard that this way was impossible, but I am not 100% sure.
And if that doesn't work, is there any way to get a newer graphics card? Probably externally through the bolt connection thing?
    Thank you

    Jon,
Like yourself I found that a customized PC is the way to go for PC games. For several years Apple sort of kept up with PC graphics ability making the Macbook Pros, Mac Pros, and some iMacs close enough to play recent demanding PC games.
The current trend of thinner and lighter for the Apple laptops has compromised the gaming capabilities to the point that I have switched to a PC Clevo P150HM for new games.  I play Skyrim on ultra settings. The best thing about these PCs is the initial customability and some upgrading ability later.
One big question I have about the trend to Retinal displays is how much more graphics ability is required to just maintain the existing level of performance.

    Greetings Jon,
I'm guessing from your description that you were using FaceTime Beta.  With the release of the full version of FaceTime for sale in the Mac Appstore, the Beta is no longer available through Apple.  If you have backups (which everyone with anything they care about on their computer should) you could restore the App from your backup.
If you don't like using a credit card online you can go buy an App Store gift card in a local store and add credit to your account to purchase it.
    Best of luck!

  • External Graphics Card for Macbook Pro 2011?

Tired of just having no graphics card which really irritates when i play high graphics games....just really need to know if there is an option of using an external graphics card

There is no external graphics solution that will be anything but much, much slower than what you have.
If your MacBook is not meeting your needs, sell it and buy one that better meets your needs. Most of the 15" units today have a discrete graphics processor that tag-teams with the Integrated graphics for superior performance under stress, acceptable battery life when not taxed.

  • Upgrade RAM to 16GB or new graphics card for Macbook Pro?

I edit very large photos daily in Photoshop CC, each photo around 25mb, with the finished PSD file at 300-500mb. I also have a dual-monitor display. There's a tiny bit of lag whenever more than one or two programs are open, and when I'm editing the screens will freeze for 10 seconds every minute or so. Is this a RAM issue, or do I just need a more powerful graphics card to power two displays? I'm a college student on a budget and want to keep this as cheap as possible. I've seen 16GB RAM on Amazon for $150, which is a stretch but doable. I don't know anything about graphics cards. Also, how would I go about installing either?

    The correct RAM specifications for a 2012 13" MBP are:   204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
The most reliable sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
Look at this video which shows hoe to install RAM in your MBP:

    A) a new iPod Air
    Or
    B) a new MacBook Pro with Retina.
After researching this topic, I found the placing an old SIM card in a new iPad would be impossible. There is no way for consumers to remove the back cover... Without dropping it off a building. My best suggestion: Use the current plan up first. Then buy a new plan.

  • ESATA for MacBook Pro

Is it possible to connect external eSATA drives to a MacBook Pro? If so what do you need. I want to take advantage of the speed gains.
    Thanks

You'll find one option at http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposataexpress34.html , Reelsick and another at http://firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2sm2-e/
Bear in mind, though, that eSata will only be a little faster than FW800 (which current MBP's have built in), so you may want to consider whether the price of the additional card is worth it when compared to a FW800 drive if you have a FW800 capable MBP. Barefeats have some useful reports on speed comparisons of the different interfaces -see, for example, http://www.barefeats.com/rosa06.html

  • Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

can you help me handing me some direction where I can download an antivirus for MacBook Pro compatible and has no cost

Sure - just download the free ClamXav from here - http://www.clamxav.com/.
Be sure to read the documentation.
It's the only av app you'll ever need and the price is right. Whatever you wish to donate.

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • ESata express cards without hassle? Recommendations?

I got two 1TB WD My Book Studio drives. Currently connected to MBP via
800 Firewire. The drives each have an esata port.
Anybody here bought and successfully use an esata expresscard in MBP express card slot to
connect the same or similar without the hassle of having to troubleshoot?
Any specific card recommendations for a trouble-free card, please?
Most importantly, have you experienced a noticeable and significant performance improvement in, for
example, photoshop with drive thus connected as scratch drive - or loading pics into, eg, Lightroom or Aperture?
    Cheers

This probably belongs in the "earlier" MacBook Pro forum. The new MBP's do not have an ExpressCard slot...
    Hi,
The Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 17" still has an ExpressCard.
I have had better luck using direct connect "native" SATA enclosures with eSATA ExpressCards on the MacBook Pro.
