ESATA ExpressCard Problem

I bought a new eSATA ExpressCard.
One of the new ones that are smaller and don't need a special driver.
When I plug in a drive and start it up, it causes a kernel panic.
I know that the card is fine, I'm pretty sure it's a software conflict.
The strange thing is, that if the disk is plugged in and running before I start the computer, everything is fine. That is, no kernel panic.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to figure out what's causing the conflict?

It's from Other World Computing.
Brand: Best Connectivity (?)
It's replacing a LaCie SATA II ExpressCard 34, which had a driver. I tried with LaCie tech support to remove all the driver parts but I can't be sure I got all of them.
I know that I works just fine because I have a bootable external drive that I use for maintenance.
When I boot from this drive, which is bare bones (just a few utility programs like Diskwarrior), it works beautifully.
My gut feeling is that it might be one of my startup programs, because if I boot from my internal drive with the card and hard drive plugged in and running, it works.
Go figure.

  • Reccomendations for eSATA expresscard please!

    Hi,
I've just installed Snow Leopard and my 2 port esata express card no longer works. During the install process OSX stated that my SIL3132-based card is not supported and the software has been removed and placed in a folder.
I have had problems all week trying to get this thing to work in Bootcamp with Windows XP (the attached drive would never show in Explorer) although it did work perfectly in Leopard.
That's all by the by anyway. I'm pretty much over this cheap and nasty card so i've decided to bin it and buy another one in the hope that it'll be less troublesome.
So my question is can anyone tell me a brand/model of *2 port* esata expresscard that they have got working both in OSX Snow Leopard AND Bootcamp with Windows XP please?
If i can't find one I will be forced to use Firewire 800, but i am unsure if this is quick enough for multi-track audio recording and video editing.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    John

A bit of research shows that your card uses the very same chipset as the Firmtek card. Therefore you may be able to get their driver to work with your card instead of spending your hard earned cash on a new card. I will be testing this over the weekend when I install Snow Leopard myself and try to get things up and running. I, however, will be doing a clean install (shame on Apple for requiring a wipe for this option to appear) and dual booting with either Tiger or Leopard so that I may use some programs that likely will not work with SL (and possibly in this case, eSATA). If you insist on getting a new card, I suggest the Sonnet Tempo Pro, which uses the Marvel chipset. May as well upgrade performance at the same time as making it work with a new OS that all cards should work with anyway.
On the driver front, while I am not suggesting that you break any EULA's which Firmtek may have on its drivers, most cards based on the Sil-3132 chip use Silicon Image's reference design. Thus the driver should work without any modification. At the very most you may have to modify a plist file to get it to accept your card and install it. Kudo's to Firmtek for going above and beyond the (lack there of) work that Silicon Image puts into their drivers. If I knew what I know now I would have gladly paid more for a card from a company that writes their own drivers.
I'll update once I get SL up and running and (attempt to) get my eSATA card working with it.

  • Pcmcia  eSATA ExpressCard and Yosemite upgrade?

When I upgraded to Mavericks the pcmcia  eSATA ExpressCard in my 17" MacbookPro stopped working, and I had to go through an involved process to restore the libraries that were removed from that OS upgrade.
Does anyone know if pcmcia eSATA ExpressCard drives work under Yosimite, or will the upgrade break that drive again?
The ExpressCard on this laptop is dedicated to the Aperture library which won't fit on the hard drive and it is critical to keep it functional.
    thanks all!

Same Problem here. No warning no nothing. I am using this card to connect my backup disk and now - nada. @Apple: This is bad policy not telling in advance that there ist unsupported Hard/Software on a system _BEFORE_ upgrading. This software is there for a reason!

  • ESata Expresscard 34 - how do I use it?

An Addonics eSata expresscard that I inserted into the expresscard slot on my Macbook Pro is not being recognized because I see a little item appearing on the menu bar. However, I have on idea on how to get it to recognize the hard disk it is connected to. Also, the lights on the eSata do not light up - I assume that this will happen once the hard disk is recognized?

I finally got it working, but am somewhat disappointed with the results. I find that it takes longer to transfer a file from my external drive to the internal drive via eSata than Firewire 800. Do I need to configure the eSata expresscard? I thought data transfer was supposed to go much faster than FW 800.

  • MacBook Pro 17' (2010) don't want eSATA expresscard/34

    Hi
each time I connect the eSATA expresscard/34 Griffin in the macbook pro
it start a kernel panic, grey screen, etc.
or, a message : HD not readable, Do you want to erase and initialize your HD?
And there is no new update in the Griffin website.
I've try to reboot in 64 bits... same result.
    Please, someone know some issue?
    thank you
    jem

Try to find out who the original chipset manufacturer is and then go to their web site and see if they have updated drivers for 10.6.x. I have a card which uses the Siliconlmage chip set and found a 64-bit compatible driver for 10.6.3 for the dual port system. If you have a SiliconImage chipset try this link:

  • Lion 10.7 - Proper driver for Dynex eSATA Expresscard adapter?

I just upgraded to OS X Lion today, and I'm having trouble talking to my external drive with my eSATA expresscard adapter. (see link below)
    http://reviews.bestbuy.com/3545/8682393/dynex-2-port-esata-ii-expresscard-adapte r-reviews/reviews.htm
The adapter is detected as a "Mass Storage Controller," but I can't get any connectivity with my external drive. Has anyone had success with this/any expresscard adapter? Back to good ol' USB 2.0 for the time being I guess...
    Thanks in advance!

I can confirm that this driver (SLI 3132 ver. 1.2.5.0) is working for my Dynex 2 port e-SATA II ExpressCard Adapter.
(Link to Mac specific driver page)
I haven't done any super heavy lifting with it yet, but so far so good.
Will report back if I see any issues over the next couple days of use.

  • GX630 boot from esata expresscard adapter

    Hi,
i have GX630 with non functional sata ports (sata working for 5min and after that not).
Now i booting from USB, but this is little slowly.
I read many topics about booting ssd card from expresscard slot, and it works, but its much expensive for me.
Can i boot from esata expresscard adapter (adapter supports booting)?
Can bios in GX630 recognize this sata adapter?
    Thanks for reply

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
the EFI and SMC updates are specific for each Mac model.
Therefor trying to apply an EFI update made for the newer MBP to an older one would either not work (because the Installer checks the model) or, if it installs, surely crash your MBP.
    Don't try it !!
Since the newer MBPs uses a different (newer) Intel-chipset on the logic board, it is most likely that the ability to boot from eSATA Express Card is not implemented on the chipset that is in your 'older' MBP.
    Sorry

  • W530 eSata expresscard 34 recommendation

    Hi,
I need to get an eSata port on a W530 and I would like to get a card that's fully compatible with full bandwidth and no BSOD.
    Could anyone recommend card(s)?
    Thank you

I'm also in the market for a reputable brand of SATAIII eSATA ExpressCard. Glad I ran into this thread. I just looked through this Addonics Card recommended but I could not find indication of its port-multiplier support on the following official web page.
I have a 5-day eSATA external HDD enclosure and I'm dying for a true SATAIII ExpressCard with port-multiplier support.
Could any current owner of the Addonics Card confirm this does support port-multiplier? BTW could someone recommend some real SATAIII eSATA cable as well?

  • Firmtek SeriTek/2SM2-E eSATA ExpressCard/34 - Deep Sleep issues / problems

    Hi There,
Has anyone had experience with these cards? I've emailed FirmTek twice over the past 2 weeks but haven't heard back.
The card and drive work as expected until the computer sleeps for more than 20min or so (I can't be sure of the exact time). When you wake the computer the drive is on the desktop and you can browse previously viewed directories but if you go to a new directory, the Finder locks up.
Turning the drive off and restarting works until the computer sleeps.
I have a new 17" Macbook Pro running 10.5.7 connected to a Western Digital Mybook Studio edition enclosure.
I checked with FirmTek before purchasing the card to ensure compatibility with my existing drive (I'd heard Lacie & Sonnet both have issues) so I'm not sure what the problem is.
Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Cheers

    Dear Ben,
My guess is that you may have some type of Spam filter that prevents the FirmTek response from reaching you. If you live outside the US it can be difficult for companies to call you when this occurs. You may want to check your spam filter, call FirmTek or email them your phone number.
It is possible that you may have another extension loaded that is causing the issue. This is what I would do.
    1. Look for WDBMService in Macintosh HD//Library/StartupItems/WDBMService. If it exists I would remove it. This startup item can cause the ExpressCard driver problems. Restart and see if this corrects the issue.
    2. If this does not correct the issue you can install an alternative driver. Here are the directions.
    A. Uninstall the existing driver by removing the following files (if they exist)
    Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/FTATASil3132EC.kext
    Macintosh HD//System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    Macintosh HD/System/Library/Caches (folder)
    Restart the MacBook Pro
    B. Download the SiI 3132 32-bit universal Mac OS X 10.4.9, 10.4.10, & 10.5.1 BASE Driver found 1/4 of the way down the page here: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=32&cat=3
    C. Install the SiI3132 1.1.9u driver downloaded in B above. Restart.
    Now try the WD enclosure.
The beauty of the SeriTek/2SM2-E is that it will work with the FirmTek driver or this Silicon Image driver which provides another option for certain applications. Just don't install both drivers together
    Have fun!

  • Recommend eSATA Expresscard 34

I just purchased Newer Technology Voyager S2 with OWC's Best Connectivity eSATA II Expresscard 34 with the JMicron JMB360 chipset. Things worked fine at first boot, but then I noticed that VMware Fusion would not load and a couple of times I experienced a panic attack and had to reboot the system. After some research there seems to be issues with Expresscards running eSATA on the Macbook Pros. Is there a card that does work that is reasonably priced? Can some one recommend what works for them. I am getting ready to send this combo back and get the Voyager w/ Firewire 800 for the reliability. Thanks.

what things did you find? I called OWC, they are telling me there is an almost across the board issue with these cards no matter how much or who sells them.
that's why apple is phasing it out with the SD card slot.

  • ESata Expresscard adapters & 10.5.7

Hi there - I am testing a MBP unibody 2.8Ghz with a eSata JMicron expresscard/34 expansion slot and a Lacie 1TB Quadra External. Earlier today I tried a make a Time Machine backup using 10.5.6 and it froze up near the 10GB mark. In order to get the drive working again I had to reformat it while connected with FW-800.
Given the update I figured I'd try 10.5.7 a try and see if any issues seemed resolved - so far so good - I'm at 15GB and it's still going - no freezeup yet. I figured I'd see if anyone has seen any similar improvement.

    thanks!

  • Firewire Expresscard problems... anyone got one that works?

I've got a toshiba laptop and I'm trying to hook up my first generation iPod with a startech.com expresscard reader (with two firewire ports). My third gen works fine, but the 1st gen can be read but not wrote to in windows explorer and iTunes (leading to all sorts of drama when I try sync). The iPod works fine in my other firewire computer. Does anyone know whats going wrong or know of an expresscard adapter that they use and works?
    Thanks for your time,
    Sean

Well, I have the one before that, the 2405, and I have them both connected via DVI. No problems.
Somethings wrong with the monitor...send it back.

  • ExpressCard problem

    Hi all,
Just got my new MacBook Pro yesterday, but am concerned that I might've found a problem with it. In my previous MacBook Pro (mid-2007 model), I used a Griffin card reader in the ExpressCard slot, and it worked perfectly. However, today I tried putting that card reader in to my new MBP, and it completely fails to recognise it; it doesn't even appear under the USB bus in system profiler. This then of course means that if I insert a memory card nothing happens. I've tried rebooting, inserting the reader while the laptop's off, inserting the reader + memoy card while the laptop's off, and various other combinations, but nothing seems to work. Problem is, it's my only ExpressCard, so I've no idea if it's a strange incompatibility between the card and the laptop or, in fact, a faulty ExpressCard slot.
So I'd like to ask: has anyone tried the Griffin card reader in their ExpressCard slot (and if so how did it work), and has anyone else had problems getting any kind of ExpressCard to work in the new MBP, where the card used to work in a previous laptop?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Wow, that was fast! Got a potential solution from AppleCare in less than 15 minutes.
I called AppleCare and described the issue. The technician had me do the following steps in order.
    1) Shut down the Mac completely.
    2) Remove all connections: USB, power, remove the ExpressCard reader from the slot - remove everything so you are left with the laptop all by its lonesome.
    3) Flip the laptop over and remove the battery. You do this by lifting the little handle and removing the case cover. Then, pull the plastic strap attached to the battery to lift it out it. Set the case cover and the battery aside in a safe place.
    4) Next step is to reset the PMU (Power Management Unit). With the battery removed and all devices disconnected, turn your MacBook over and open the lid, and hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Do not release the power button while you are counting - you must hold it down and keep it held down while you count to 15.
    5) After 15 seconds, let go of the power button, and replace the battery and case. The battery slots back in easily enough. The case is a little tricker. It goes in nose-first (i.e. the bit closest to the front of the laptop goes in first), then you lower the case down to rest slightly open on the bit by the lever. Push the little lever back in to winch the case cover back in to place.
    6) Turn the laptop over, and reboot and login like normal.
You should now be able to plug your card reader in and have it work without problems. I was able to plug my one in and make two 800 MB transfers without issue; previously, it would fail randomly half way through the transfer.
Prior to the resolution of the issue, the only other device I had attached to the Mac was a USB hard drive (250 GB Western Digital MyBook, connected to high speed USB 2.0). However, after I went through the steps above, I attached this hard drive again and tried the transfer from the ExpressCard a second time, and was able to transfer all the files without the "device removal" error I was getting before.
If you have the same issue and are having problems, just call AppleCare (you get 90 days free with every Mac you buy, so use it or lose it! ). They are keeping my support case open in case I see any more issues, but everything seems to be working great now. I'll post back here again if I have any more problems.
Wild *** guess: I downloaded all the software updates last night, including all the firmware updates. I'm guessing some of this left the high speed USB bus confused, so resetting the PMU and associated widgets might have cleared this problem out. Again, just a guess.
    Thanks,
    - max

  • Compact Flash to Expresscard problem

I just got a brand new 17" Macbook Pro. Along with it I've purchashed a CF to Expresscard reader to get the images from my Nikon D700 into Aperture. But it's simply not working.
When I plug the card into the reader and the reader into the Expresscard slot, I get a small icon up near the clock (it's a small square icon) with the option to "Power off card" when I click on it. It also says "IDE Controller". I can't get the Compact Flash card to show up on my desktop, in Aperture, or in Image Capture.
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated! I've never used an Expresscard slot before, so I don't know if there's anything that I need to be doing differently. I can't imagine having to install drivers for the CF to Expresscard reader, but I guess anything is possible.
Thanks a lot in advance for any assistance.

    It is this card:
    http://www.amazon.com/CompactFlash-Adapter-Express-ExpressCard-Support/dp/B003XQ S7RQ/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1313253634&sr=8-16
It is not showing in Finder, Aperture or in Image Capture.
I believe I have the latest firmware as the Macbook Pro just arrived from Apple 2 days ago - how do I know for sure?
    Thanks.

  • ESata Expresscard/34 Recommendations

I am planning on getting an eSata express card for my MacBook Pro and am trying to figure out what would be the best card to get. I have read over several of the threads in these forums, but haven't really found solid recommendations for any of the various cards. I have a 15" macbook pro running the most recent version of Leopard and a WD my book external harddrive (home edition). What express card would you recommend for this setup?

I also have this card which works fine on a ProAvio Raid 5.
Transferring 30GB of video files from a graid2 on the internal FW800 bus to the Proavio Raid using the express e-sata card gave about 51.2 ish MB/sec. is that what I should expect.
There is nothing else on the internal FW bus.
I also have a sonnet express 34 FW800 card which DOES NOT WORK, with these drives.
Has any one used this card?
