ESata external housing options??

Hi everyone
Could anyone help me out with which eSata external housings to buy for my g5 mac.
I want to hook up an external sataII 500gb harddrive to my g5 via sata. Which eSata housings would you recommend. I want to leave the option of being able to add another drive, even maybe 3 or 4 at a later stage. So a housing that can hold more the one drive in it.
Also, i will need a eSata card to go into my g5, any recommendations
Thanks for your help

Sorry for my ignorance. This is what i found on my "about" section
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.4f1
I have four ram slots.
Thanks for the links. I will check this out and tell you what i think.
I've decided now that i don't want an external housing for only one drive, so thankyou very much for the reference but i want room for upgrade

  • K9A2 Platinum esata port and Install and Usage of esata External Hard Drive

I just bought a sata hard drive and an icy dock enclosure for backup purposes. Having never used one before can someone explain how this works?
I have the hard drive in the enclosure, no problem there. I plugged it into the esata port on the back of my motherboard, but vista won't recognize it and when I reboot and go into the BIOS, I don't see it there either.  I have purchased Acronis True Image 11 Home for backup and mirroring purposes. I wish to mirror my existing internal drive to this new external drive.
    Questions:
    1. Can I use the esata ports on the motherboard for this drive, or should I use the PCI bracket and plug it into one of the existing sata ports on the motherboard? If esata port, exactly how do they work? Are there BIOS settings for the esata ports or do they operate more like a usb connection?
    2. Do I need to do anything with this drive before using it; format, install operating system...??
    3. Are the esata external drive considered plug and play or do I need to plug it in before I boot my computer.
    TIA.

Everything seems to be working as I would have expected at this point, with the exception of the size of the mirrored drives.
I decided to make another mirror onto the 3rd drive making all 3 drives identical. So now I would expect all three drives to show the same "GB free" while viewing with Vista explorer.  The odd thing is, is that which ever drive I make bootable - SATA5 port and becomes the C: drive,  shows 226GB free. The other drives, either as E: or J: will show as 268GB free.  Most be an Acronis or Acronis user (me) issue/oddity?
But bottom line, the sata and esata ports seem to be working as I would expect. Though plugging the external hard drive in before booting (power on or off, needs to be unplugged from the esata port) seems to hang at the FasTrack screen as described above.
My only guess to why this all seems to be working currently is that I don't think I ever had my bios set correctly. After enabling the onboard controller, having the drive actually plugged into SATA5, then rebooting, selecting boot sequence and selecting the raid drive as the first boot device. At least this is my recollection, I made so many bios changes previously that I thought I had it all covered.
Any thoughts?  I think I will try to get an answer on the Acronis size difference before I try to setup my RIAD 1, since that would require erasing two drives, per your instructions here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113738.0
    Thanks for help once again.

  • Adding an eSATA External Drive Success Story

Aim: Add an eSATA external drive to a QIP 7232 2.
Note: Links are to products on Amazon, but other vendors sell the same equipment.
    1. Purchase a Western Digital AV-GP 2 TB AV Hard Drive, 3.5 Inch, SATA II, 64 MB Cache - WD20EURS, $109. Two terabytes, and designed for stressful AV applications.
    2. Purchase a Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360SU-BK External Hard Drive Enclosure, $32. This device comes with an eSATA cable but I used instead an 18" cable I bought on Amazon for $5 (no dust-collecting coils of eSATA cable stuffed behind the DVR!). Eighteen inches is ample.
    3. Insert drive into enclosure. If you don't want a very bright flashing blue light disturbing your television viewing, do not connect the LED power wire to the front panel of the external drive.
    4. Aftermakingsuretheexternaldriveisturnedoff, pluginitspowersupplyand connect the drive to the DVR with the eSATAcable.
    5. Turn on the external drive.
That's all it took. I can't remember whether the DVR immediately recognized the drive or whether I had to go to Settings/DVR to kick off this process, but whatever happened, it was simple and quick. There was no lengthy disk formatting process -- less than a minute after I turned on the drive it was ready to accept recordings.
I was astonished at the simplicity of the whole process and gratified to find that my existing recordings were untouched. I can't imagine any way in which Verizon could have made this process easier or quicker.

Thanks for the helpful info! I see WD makes a 3TB AV hard drive. Do you think this would work with the Motorola QIP 72322 DVR?

  • Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD

I am trying to copy a VMWare Fusion virtual machine, 57 GB, from my Macbook Pro's laptop hard drive to an external, eSATA hard drive, which is attached through an ExpressPort adapter. VMWare Fusion is not running and the external drive has lots of room. The disk utility finds no problems with either drive. I have excluded both the external disk and the folder on my laptop hard drive that contains my virtual machine from my Time Machihne backups. At about the 42 GB mark, an error message appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Windows1-Snapshot6.vmem" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
After I press OK to remove the dialog, the copy does not continue, and I cannot cancel the copy. I have to force-quit the Finder to make the copy dialog go away before I can attempt the copy again. I've tried rebooting between attempts, still no luck. I have tried a total of 4 times now, exact same result at the exact same place, 42 GB / 57 GB.
    Any ideas?

Still no breakthrough from Apple. They're telling me to terminate the VMWare processes before attempting the copy, but had they actually read my description of the problem first, they would have known that I already tried this. Hopefully they'll continue to investigate.
From a correspondence with Tim, a support representative at Apple:
    Hi Tim,
Thank you for getting back to me, I got your message. Although it is true that at the time I ran the Capture Data program there were some VMWare-related processes running (PID's 105, 106, 107 and 108), this was not the case when the issue occurred earlier. After initially experiencing the problem, this possibility had occurred to me so I took the time to terminate all VMWare processes using the activity monitor before again attempting to copy the files, including the processes mentioned by your engineering department. I documented this in my posting to apple's forum as follows: (quote is from my post of Feb 19, 2008, 1:28pm, to the thread "Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD", relevant section in >bold print<)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have since tried this operation with 3 different drives through two different interface types. Two of the drives are identical - 3.5" 7200 RPM 1TB Western Digital WD10EACS (WD Caviar SE16) in external hard drive enclosures, and the other is a smaller USB2 100GB Western Digital WD1200U0170-001 external drive. I tried the two 1TB drives through eSATA - ExpressPort and also over USB2. I have tried the 100GB drive only over USB2 since that is the only interface on the drive. In all cases the result is the same. All 3 drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I know the files work on my laptop's hard drive. They are a VMWare virtual machine that works just fine when I use it every day. >Before attempting the copy, I shut down VMWare and terminated all VMWare processes using the Activity Monitor for good measure.< I have tried the copy operation both through the finder and through the Unix command prompt using the drive's mount point of /Volumes/jfinney-ext-3.
    Any more ideas?
Furthermore, to prove that there were no file locks present on the affected files, I moved them to a different location on my laptop's HDD and renamed them, which would not have been possible if there had been interference from vmware-related processes. So, that's not it.
Your suggested workaround, to compress the files before copying them to the external drive, may serve as a temporary workaround but it is not a solution. This VM will grow over time to the point where even the compressed version is larger than the 42GB maximum, and compressing and uncompressing the files will take me a lot of time for files of this size. Could you please continue to pursue this issue and identify the underlying cause?
    Thank you,
    - Jeremy

  • PO to supplier using external send option email (to multiple addresses)

    Hello All,
We have activated PO external send option for our client but they want that PO should be sent to more than one ID of the supplier and it seems that is not possible by maintaining multiple addresses in Vendor Master's Address view as system only picks one having indicator ticked, also system does not allow to tick it for more than one address. Please let me know if it is possible using standard function to send PO email to more than one address.
I need to know if there is any standard way of doing this w/o using any development or ABAP work.
Also has anybody tried using disctribution list SO15 if it is possible?
Please help we are at Go live.

    Hi,
From my opinion, it's impossible of the standard function in SAP system, so:
    Firstly you need to confirm with your buyers, whether they really require to send the information to multiple addresses, maybe they can send the information to one contact person on vendor side, then the contact person can forward the email to other relevant people;
If have to do it, you need to develope an ABAP background job to do it!
Hope you can solve the problem!

  • HP Pavilion - Do I need external Recovery option?

    Hi,
I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15.  Keep getting contractdictory advice.  Some say must have an external Recovery option; others say why, there is no need and it is a lot of hassle to create a set.  Need advice:
    1)  is it really necessary to have an external option when I have the recovery partition (D) on the hard drive?
    2)  If I need an external option (however hard that may be to create), am thinking about buying Panasonic DVD-RAM Disc Rewritable 9.4GB.  Is this appropriate media?  And, how do I work out how many discs I need to buy?
    3) absolute worse case secenario - if I needed to recover & didn't have an external recovery media, what would be my other options?
Unfortunately, know enough knowlegde/experince to worry but not enough to know what to do.  Can anyone help?
    This question was solved.

To the best of my knowledge, HP allows driver downloads regardless of warranty status..  About the only time you will ever have an issue is if you are trying to put an OS on a machine it's not designed for..  IE Win7 on a Win8 machine, etc etc..
Even then, there are always alternatives...
My philosophy has always been to NEVER put anything on a computer that you can't live without..
If Drivers are your concern, don't worry.  With VERY few exceptions, drivers are ALWAYS available..
The hassle of going out into the wild of the Interent to find them is really the only downside...

  • Am I correct that Quantum does not support the eSATA external drives?

I bought an eSATA external drive when they first became available and I get a huge amount of storage space (something like 120 hours of HD).
Can you mix and match your old DVR with the new Quantum DVR?  In other words, could I keep my old one up in the bedroom or is quantum all or nothing?
The 6 channels at once thing is appealing - particularly during football season ... but going backwards on recording capacity is a dealkiller, regrettably.

So I've renewed my FIOS contract.  If/when the six-channel DVR starts supporting eSATA, I'll reconsider switching to it.  If the port is on there, it's a shame that they're not enabling it.  I guess that they want an upcharge for extra capacity rather than letting you buy it yourself.
The VMS boxes are in a sense using older firmware such as the guide being the older version then what the multi room boxes use right now which is why the ports arent enabled yet. I'm sure once they release a new firmware upgrade they will be enabled.

  • New Mac Pro: What are You using to connect your eSATA external drives to you nMacPro?

    Hi,
I have some eSATA external HDs that I would like to use with my 2013 New Mac Pro.
I was just wondering what other  have been using to connect their nMPs to eSATA devices and how well it has worked.  I have seen a USB3 to eSATA cable from NewEgg.... which seems like a good idea ... if it will work.
    Thanks!

LaCie TB HUB has two TB ports which is good for daisy chain. Has two esata ports also. I connect a Voyager bought from OWC to one sata port and that's where my bare 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives reside when I need them. The other sta port has a Pioneer 207 blu ray drive. When I sleep my 2013 Mac Pro I turn off the power to the Voyager and the Pioneer. All work flawlessly.

  • Removeing internal RAID to external housing?

    Hello!
So, I have a couple drives formatted as a striped RAID and want to move them out (to make room for new drives) - can I put them in some external housing as is and expect the housing to understand that they are formatted as a Striped RAID?
I am trying to avoid cloning everything off to a single drive and re-formatting the two old RAID drives.
    Thanks in advance, Don

I'll say this: clone or backup, even under the best of circumsances if you have data on them.
    Yes, it should be fine.
Why not look into G5 Jive then, and keep them as internal. You'd have to buy a controller unless you already are running some external drives.
A Sonnet Temp and 4-5 drive enclosure, even if you only are using two drives now.

When you plug headphones in, or external speakers, where it states "internal speakers", it will rename that "headphones", say. Unless you are running an external sound card.

  • External Video option not working

Recently our Final Cut System crashed. We're running 10.5.7, FCP 6.0.6. We have an external JVC monitor that always worked before with Video Playback. Now we have no Video Playback options (we do not use Digital Cinema Desktop - but that is all that is currently available.). We have reinstalled FCP several times - the issue is NOT a) installation b) a JVC driver c) a faulty monitor (we see an image when we digitize footage). Footage is digitized through a Sony HDV 1080i deck. The deck is functionally normally. In fact, everything is functioning normally except that since we did the system reinstall we no longer have any video playback options behind Digital Cinema Desktop. The Help boys tried but I couldn't describe the problem any more clearly than this. The connections have been checked and indeed not changed. The Video Playback worked for six months previous to the crash. Does anyone know how we can recover External Video options? PS Important note - the External Video setting is set to OFF and will NOT reconnect to "All Frames" or "Single Frame". Thanks.

Are you trying to preview HDV? Or DV? I know you can preview HDV via firewire as DV...don't know how to do that...but someone does.

  • Is the iCloud an external storage option?

    Hi,
The storage area has 5.93GB available and I am unable to update the operating system as there is not enough space available. I have emptied the Trash.
I need to look at external storage options and am wondering if purchasing 200 GB in the iCloud and move audio, movies and photos from the MacBook Air to iCloud is a practical option instead of an external hard drive or mini drive. Audio, movies and photos take up 75GB storage.
    Thank you.

The funny thing is, I've seen loads of cheap "replacement" MagSafe adapters on eBay, Amazon and in local shops. On eBay, they cost (new) about $26, on Amazon I've seen them as cheap as $17!!, against the $80 that Apple charges. And apparently, it's not worth it to pursue the matter, it's been going on for more than a year now.

I really dig that unobtainium reference :-)
What I've found is that the bricks aren't so frail but the DC cord is! Apparently that's difficult to make resilient, with the characteristics that Apple wanted them to have. Out of every ten broken MagSafe adapters I've seen, only two actually have failed electronics, five have frayed DC wiring and three have a broken MagSafe connector.

  • Best External HDD Option

I am looking for some advice on the best external setup, speed, and capacity wise, its also important to keep in mind this is for a portable setup so I do need to be able to carry it around with me.
As far as I know the best option would be for me to buy a large capacity 10,000 RPM SATA HDD, and then purchase an Express32 Card that supports eSATA.
    Is this a viable option?
I have heard that eSATA is the fastest option for data transfer, because I could always get an external enclosure that supports FireWire 800...
But as far as I know, FireWire and SATA arn't compatable, so I would have to buy a IDE hard drive, and then I'm not sure that you can even get 10,000 RPM IDE drives.
    oh, the drama!
I really have my heart set on a 10,000RPM Drive.
Any advice would be most appreciated!!
    -Chris

    I would go for a 750GB ATA HD @ 7,200 rpm with a
    firewire 800 enclosure.
As far as I know the is a compatability issue between
the SATA and Firewire Technologies.. Which basically
means you cannot get an enclosure that is firewire,
    and supports SATA drives.
Mac Sales have them. I have a 2.5" 100GB SATA 7200RPM drive I've been thinking of putting in a FireWire external enclosure of theirs.
