ESATA Kernel Panics in Safari 5.1.7 (OSX 10.7.4)

I'm experiencing kernel panics whenever attempting to load drives using the browser-based interface for the HighPoint Technologies RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6 Gbit/s for Mac controller. This began occurring immediately after updating to Safari 5.1.7 (OSX v10.7.4).
All my eSATA peripherals are therefore completely unusable. Rather than using Time Machine to back up to the last update, has anyone got a workaround? Either using Terminal or Firefox or something else? IE?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Update: Safari 5.1.7 seems to be causing the problem. Firefox 11 is not causing kernel panics.

  • 10.6.5 is causing kernel panics in Safari -- 6 mo. old i5 MBP, Help!

    Hi everyone,
I have a 6 month old MBP 15" i5 with a 128GB SSD. I ordered it brand new from Apple, never opened the case, screwed around with the RAM, etc. which I believe is a main factor in Kernel Panics.
I have repaired permissions after booting from the original CD and without, as well as verified the disk which "appeared to be OK." I've also run the Apple Hardware Test off of Application Disk 2 by holding "D" at startup, and no errors were found.
Externally, I have a LaCie D2 Quadra HD daisy-chained with an Apogee Duet into FW800, and an iPhone dock into USB. Everything else is Bluetooth.
I have never once experienced a kernel panic with this computer until the 10.6.5 update the other day -- and I've used my computer the exact same for the last 6 months. After that, I've experienced 3 kernel panics this week alone -- all three in Safari. Usually when I'm doing a lot, or I've opened a lot of tabs, or even when I navigate to certain pages without any tabs open, it doesn't matter -- the beach ball appears for a few seconds, then the slow gray-colored transition appears with the "you need to restart your computer" message. At this point, I simply don't know what to do. I think the key lies in the kernel panic logs. Here are all three:

If someone could help me debug these, I'd greatly appreciate it. There are other active threads right now with people having the same issue but the difference is that a lot of them have installed RAM after the fact, creating some kind of conflict. Regardless, I think 10.6.5 may have corrupted something, or is corrupt by nature.

It just says what was running at the time the panic was logged

but it'd be tough for Safari to create a panic of itself, and the others are all apple & unlikely to be a problem... which'd suggest hardware then, but it's easier/quicker to remove those 3rd party kexts than to run hardware test or reinstall/update again.

  • Kernel panic when I insert and restart OSX tiger CD

I have a slot loading imac PowerPC G3 DVD-ROM drive, 256MB RAM and 10GB HD, which shipped with OS9
I have been using it like this since I bought it, but in recent months it had slowed, crashed a lot etc and I thought it was time to get it up to scratch.
I wanted to upgrade it to OS X tiger, but having done little to maintain my imac over the years thought I better get into good shape before I tried.
Disk first aid had identified a problem with the startup disk which I could only seem to resolve be reinitializing the startup disk from my original CDs. So did this.
I also erased and restored OS9 from the original software restore CD.
I tried to upgrade to tiger straight from OS9 and got into terrible trouble losing image on screen. (attached a borrowed monitor to do repairs)
I then downloaded from the apple site OS9.1 OS9.2 and OS 9.2.2 and installed in order (because I didn’t have CDs I just opened the downloads and installed from there)
I also downloaded new Firmware 4.9.1 and upgraded this.
Screen problem resolved, but now trying to upgrade to tiger from OS 9.2.2 encountering a different problem
Insert tiger CD – big X appears and a button to restart – press this and imac begins to restart – grey screen appears and dark grey apple then stops and a kernel panic (white in black) appears saying
Panic (cpu0 caller ox002de020) unable to find drivers for this platform “power Mac 2,1”
Loads of other text/numbers appear including “backtrace” etc
    Until it comes to
    Panic: we are hanging here
Everything freezes at this point and I have to restart the computer from the restart button and forcibly eject the CD with a paperclip in the force eject button.
Having deleted everything early on I now have no other software installed on the computer other than supplied with above.
And I detached all peripheries before trying to upgrade
Been working on this for days and am getting nowhere, can anyone help?

    Hi Rod
Have you tried running Disk First Aid again (from your original Software install CD) since erasing the drive?
to do this should I boot to the CD by holding down the C key and run disk first aid from the utilities folder on the CD? Am I alright to do this from the OS 9 CD even though I've upgraded through the downloads to OS 9.2.2?
defective, damaged or dirty Tiger DVD
How could I test this? I do have an ibook running Panther but I'm reluctant to get that involved as its working fine and storing a lot of my files while I sort out the imac.
or a DVD drive that needs cleaning
It could be this, how do I clean the DVD drive?
Is there any possibility that an "open firmware password" is set on this computer?
Not sure, I don't think I've set one, how would I check?
I recently bought the Tiger DVD new from Amazon and the RAM is all original Apple RAM.
    thanks for your help
    Sarah

  • Kernel Panic when I try to install OSX 10.3. Can anyone help?

I bought this iMac recently. It has OS 10.2.? installed and OS 9.1. When I try to install OS 10.3 I get a Kernel Panic when it reboots to start the installation. I ran the Norton Disk Doctor it had over in OS9 -- said it fixed some things and now ok but I still get a Kernel Panic trying to install Panther. I just want to re-format the whole computer with 10.3 and get rid of 9. How can I do that?
    Thanks.

    KeepItSimple:
If you're getting a kernel panic when trying to install, then I'd start with RAM and the installation disks.
RAM: Panther has higher standards for RAM than does 10.2.x; if you have more than one RAM module, take one out (assuming that leaves you with at least 128 MB) and try again. If it panics again, try switching the RAM. As far a brand names go, I prefere Kingston or Azen RAM.
Installation Disks: if they're grey, they won't work. Grey installation disks are packaged with specific Macs, and only contain hardware drivers for that specific Mac. You need the retail version of the disks, which were sold in a black box. There are four CDs in the set, three of which are for installing the OS (the fourth contains Developer Tools). The three OS disks are black with a large silver X in the middle.
    Good luck!
    Andrew

  • Reproducible kernel panic on Mid 2012 MBA5,1 OSX 10.7.5

I'm 100% sure all these issues started after the latest upgrades. However, since I did the firmware one first and system one later I can't be sure which caused it. I did do a time machine backup just before the OS update, will the OS restore itself or just my user files? I think I'll have to do a complete restore from recovery partition.
Either way here are the issues.
Everytime I let the computer go into sleep mode, and then wake it up, it kernel panics. This does not happen if I close the lid. I have to leave it to go into sleep mode on its own. It only panics when I press a key to wake it up, before that I can still ssh into it so it hasn't paniced yet.
I found some other posts with these trap codes, indicating the HD4000 chipset in my MBA. Many indicate a Chrome related issue but I never use Chrome, though it is installed.
The other reports are fairly identical except for the CPU ID which differs in each. I hope I'm just adding my complaint to the stack here because there were a lot of MBA posts relating to this issue, many of them  recent purchases. I'm doing to try a time machine restore just for the **** of it.
Ever since these issues started I also started seeing network problem when trying to use software update. It asks me if I want to diagnose the issue but it only says my connection is working, which it is in general. This also started at the same time as the panics.

This gets rid of the crap that causes the KPs after sleep MBP mid 2012. All the stuff floating around from me playing with different utilities over the years!

What exactly gets rid of the KP? All I see in that thread is troubleshooting by listing installed services, kexts and startup items.
I've checked out my own and since my MBA is fairly new, only used as a thin client, I had nowhere near the amount of items displayed in the linked thread.
If it was something I installed then it would most likely be Microsoft Office, Valve Steam or Oracle VirtualBox. I don't know what Adobe fpsaud is, maybe something with flash? Google Keystone is Chrome's auto updated if I'm not mistaken.
I don't think any of this explains the Kernel Panic, and definitely not the inability to use any software updated due to network errors. Even though my network works fine and network diagnostics says it works too.

  • MacPro 1,1 10.6.8 won't boot after kernel panic

I apologize for the long post, but figured I'd lay out the whole scenario.
I had a kernel panic in Safari yesterday. Powered down. Powered on. Message appeared saying to power down, and restart again. Did that. Then the fun started. The restart was slower than normal, with each screen (gray, blue, Snow Leopard background screen) slow to come up and move to next. Finally, it stopped on the Snow Leopard screen but the login screen never appeared.
I have my fair share of kernel panics, sometimes triggered by something Virus Barrier is guarding against, sometimes for other reasons. I regularly save the reports but can't say off the top of my head that I know of something that could be implicated in this present issue.
Since this issue surfaced, I've tried multiple interventions to no avail. I used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory and optimize the disk, both reported by the software as successful. The SMART status of the disk was normal. Verified and repaired permissions. As is typical, some were reported but nothing noticeably out of the ordinary. Still not able to reboot.
Used Apple's Disk Utility to check the status of the drive, and ran through the other available diagnostic tests. Still not able to reboot.
Among different attempts to restart, sometimes it stopped at blue screen, sometimes at Snow Leopard default background screen image.
Reset PRAM. Still no reboot. Booted into Single user mode/verbose mode. Then fsck -fy. The second time I ran the latter, it reported "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" and I ran fsck -fy once more.
The report on screen in Single User mode showed some things I don't know how to interpret. Lines of the report beginning with "AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= " were as follows:
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=1
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=7
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=6
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id=0 LocalApicId=0
    Other things from the report:
    • Mac Framework successfully initialized using 16384 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
    • BSD root: disk1s2, major 14, minor 5
    • jnl: unknown-dev
    • com.apple.launched 1 com.apple.launched1 *** launched[1] has started up. ***
Do things in this list look normal? Any red flags?
As it stands now, none of the measures have enabled the computer to reboot. When I power on it goes straight to the default Snow Leopard screen. Oddly, if I power it off but then later go back and hit the space bar, such as one would do when the computer has been idle and the computer or screen has gone to sleep, the computer instantly powers itself on. Likewise, trying to power on and hold down the "c" key to attempt to boot from the system CD to Disk Utility does the same thing. That's really odd. Powering on via any key on keyboard is not expected behavior!
So ... what I most want to determine is:
    •  Were Disk Warrior and Disk Utility mistaken in reporting that the hard drive is functioning normally? Was it actually failing?
    •  Did the fsck -fy routine, with the reported action "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED," hasten it to its death?
    •  Is it more likely that the processor or some other major hardware issue is involved?
The computer is old, and has been more fitful over the past 6 months or so, but I've also had more issues with Virus Barrier forcing kernel panics during that same time, so it's been hard to say whether it was the computer that was acting wonky or Virus Barrier causing the wonkiness.
I just need to know whether I should wipe and reformat the existing WD disk, go buy a new disk to format, or give up on the computer and order a new MacPro model to replace it. If the latter was undertaken, I would really prefer to get the old MacPro functioning long enough to have use of it while I can complete an order and get something new set up. I have some tasks that I need to be getting done and data that I need to access to take of other tasks. I have a current Time Machine back up. But now that I can't even boot from Disk Utility, it seems I will have to buy another drive to do the interim solution.
I would very, very appreciative of any expert advice.
    Debbie

    Hi hatter,
Good to talk with you again about my Mac Pro 1,1. Can't believe I still have this stalwart machine, but it just keeps on keepin' on.
I have a Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard. That's the disk I was using Disk Utility from. I did the hardware tests that I saw among the tools available when one boots from the disk. Could be I'm missing something.
While I was waiting for a reply from someone at Discussions, I went looking at Walmart for an SATA disk. They were completely out of them due to local storms that fried a lot of people's computers and hardware. It's a small town. Not a lot of options. So I came back home and thought I'd try again to boot from the Apple DVD. That time it worked. I was going to do a restore from the Time Machine backup, but then decided to just reinstall the OS from the DVD and see what happened. Clean seemed better than dirty, you know?
At any rate, I installed the OS - to the same WD Caviar Black hard disk. When it restarted, everything came up looking back to normal, except that I need to update to 10.6.8 and reinstall iWork apps and other Apple add-ons as needed. Oh what a relief it is!
I would like to do some hardware testing though. If you can advise, I would appreciate it.

  • AAHH Kernel Panic!

When ever i watch a video on you tube for more than 10 mins i either get a Kernel Panic or safari unexpectingly quitting. Also the machine randomly restarts sometimes too. This has only just started happening when i did the most recent airport and secureity updates. i also have just got a new battery for my macbook. I am guessing its one of these 3 causing it as it worked fine before these updates.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Right, that didnt work. what happens is that it randomly restarts, applications unexpectantly quit and kernal panics. i have just erased and re-installed mac os x. The only change i have made to my macbook is getting a new battery.
Any ideas greatly appreciated...this is killing me!
    thanks
    Archie

    Hello,
I've vérified the hardware, the RAM is OK, I did use applejack, verified SMART, disk permissions and so on, softwares are up to date, but Lion stills crash with different kernel panics, under Safari, or/and Word, or/and Mail, or/and etc.
    May someone help me ?
    Thanx.

  • Kernel panic undiagnosticable

Hi! I am new in this forum. English is not my natural language so please excuse me for possibles mistakes.
After a year of fighting, bringing the iMac for support service (where I was told that they did not failed, passing all tests and diagnosed nothing) they suggested I change the hard disk, it could be there and hardware. I did and it was time without fail but relapsed. Again the service say technically unable to reproduce the problem and it is indiagnosticable, so as was the hard disk warranty to swap him again and started a new install all the software slowly "just in case." It had all gone
very well until yesterday, It crashed. I was watching a streaming video, that was how I began to fail last run before changing the disk.
My question is whether that data can be revealing for some of you. Safari problem? Once I remember that I shut Safari suddenly, It crashed out an error message that was closed unexpectedly then jumped the Kernel Panic. Another fact that may be important is perhaps that the report that came out on the closure of the system, leaving me the task deceased had been Reportcrash.
Today it crashed again loading some images on google search, and the log info about the Kernel Panic said Safari was the crash's cause.
Any idea or cuestion? I don't know what to do anymore.
    Thank you.

  • 2011 i7 15" kernel-panic and  10.6.7-update ,performance so far-fixed.

i was getting kernel panics with iphone usb tethering in osx and when gaming my fans where whirring so fast my macbook could have almost started lifting offa my desk, however, ive since done the update and done smc reset a few times and reset p,ram too few times[jus to make sure etc]and its kicking along very nicely now,i run bcamp win 7 too and i have been playing far cry set to "high" for about 6 hrs today without a glitch,in fact, after doing the update and smc-p,ram etc,its not really even getting that hot,no joke, certainly not too hot to touch at all,and the fans are not buzzing even whilst gaming,so the usb thing is not fixed for me with iphone,[in osx, its fine in win 7]but i dont care, there is a big difference now, just thought id let the rest of you geezers know since its quite the distress to have your new i7 quaddie behaving more like a fan forced oven than a schmick laptop.for anyone in doubt about all this kerfuffle, unless you have a glitched hardware job,you will be fine, just do what i did, reset pram, smc and update, and u will be good as gold,ok.
ive been giving it a hiding for 2 days and no kpanic, not even loud fans, temps still going hi-ish,but thats within normal op temps[topping out in the hi 80-s whilst gaming etc],the next step for me will be to inspect the carelessly hideous amount of thermal paste that may be applied to the chips [not potato chips btw],and clean/reapply some fresh stuff if it looks bad like photos ive seen on other sites+ ifixit, this will help if heats an issue. mbpro 2.2 i7 15" 8 ram[samsung]7200 rpm hdrive,[hi res glossy].hope this helps anyone.ps =APPLE,PLEASE APPLY THE THERMAL PASTE PROPERLY NEXT TIME,===BAD APPLE===!!

Ever notice how much easier it is to read something that uses capitalization and punctuation? When you're trying to communicate, make things easy for the folks on the other end.
You would be insane to void your warranty by replacing the thermal paste in your machine now that it's working perfectly.

  • Kernel panics with AGP PowerMac

OK, getting kernel panics on my ADP constantly (running OSX 10.4.11), especially when downloading files, or listening to streaming music. I have an OWC Mercury Extreme G4 (1st Gen) cpu installed. Below is an example of a kernel panic report:

I'm not too quick about reading these, so can't see what might be the cause... Any ideas?
    Thanks

I've googled up this site here, so once home I'll follow the steps in running the Kernel Debug Kit, and see where this takes me. I'll report back here with the results, but in the meantime, if anyone has advice, please don't hesitate to pass it along.

You shouldn't have them at all. I don't see anything in the 2 panic reports implicating Safari?
Disconnect all peripherals, only Apple keyboard and mouse and test. Often connected peripherals cause kernel panics. See isolating issues in Mac OS X. for troubleshooting steps.
EDIT: Run your Repair Disk from your install disk.

  • Kernel panic after loading YouTube homepage in Safari

    Hi,
Starting about a day ago, I've encountered problems with Safari locking up my entire system, and ultimately causing a kernel panic when I visit YouTube's homepage.  Typically, what happens is that the entire screen locks up, though I can continue to move the mouse pointer, but clicks aren't recognized, nor is any keyboard input, so command-option-escape does nothing.  There are periodic flashes of black on the screen that occur in horizontal bars, appearing in various places on the screen before the complete kernel panic happens.  The following is the entire console log of the latest login session that ended in a kernal panic:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm guessing that the message "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!" is the most likely indicator of the cause of the problem, that it was some sort of video problem.  Also, on the top of the YouTube homeage is currently a Samsung banner video that seems to have been halted in mid-load (I can see the frozen "gear" load progress indicator).  Could it be that an attempt is being made to load some sort of video format that Safaril or the OS can't handle?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hi Linc,
I uninstalled Rapport, but the problem remains.  The lockup wasn't bad enough this time to cause the kernel panic screen to be displayed (I did a forced shutdown after the machine had been frozen for a few minutes), but other than that, the symptoms were the same.  Here's an updated console log of the entire session:

I believe that the problem is caused by a large Samsung banner ad that's at the top of the YouTube page.  The page loads, and then the banner ad starts to load, and then the coloration of the ad switches to odd colors, and the loading of the ad stops.  I have some control over the mouse and system for a few seconds, after which everything locks up, and I get the flashing black bands that I initially described.  In this case, I attempted to grab a screenshot of the banner ad, and I was able to do a command=shift-4 and have the cursor shape change, but everything locked up after I moved the cursor about an inch on the screen to attempt the screenshot.  FYI, landing on specific YouTube pages (such as following a Google link) doesn't cause this problem, probably because that Samsung banner ad isn't on any page other than the homepage.  I had heard that some YouTube videos were implemented in HTML5.  Could this have anything to do wtih this problem?
    Thanks,
    Ken

  • Powerbook G4 1Ghz,OSX 10.5.8 - Kernel Panic when downloading in Safari

Revisiting this, as original discussion (August 2010) was archived.
Original problem was kernel panics particularly when downloading in Safari. Various people had similar issues, and crash logs appeared to indicate Airport Card/Driver as issue - one respondent suggested replacing Airport Card.
Having left this for a few months, and reverted to Tiger, I decided to give it one last try - purchased a second-hand A1027 Airport Extreme Card on Ebay, installed it (thanks iFfixit!), tested functionality (still in Tiger), then installed Leopard (new, fresh install from retail disk). Software Updated to 10.5.8 (via Ethernet for speed).
Have been up and running in 10.5.8 for 4 days now - and all running beautifully. iLife 09 installed fine (no iMovie 09 though - failed min-spec).
Have "thrashed" my 17" Powerbook constantly - this morning tried downloading combo update 10.5.8 - 759 MB - downloaded, verified and mounted fine.
Leopard runs superbly - not incredibly fast, but appears to be at least as quick as Tiger - one definite improvement is the Airport speed, and strength of signal.
Whilst I can't categorically state the the "new" Airport Card is the solution, it is the only thing changed in my configuration. Although the card itself appears identical to the one it replaced, I think this may have done the trick.
Will continue to monitor, and post if any issues arise.
17"  Powerbook now good for a few more years yet!

You probably  have the problem described at  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088
gfxCardStatus by cody krieger  may help by allowing you to keep the graphics set to one of the two modes
In any case : take it to Apple or an AASP & show them the report They should run a specific test with a simple pass/fail result shown on screen.
The three year period since purchase has probably passed; but nonetheless, if you're asked to pay, I'd call Apple customer service (or speak to the store manager ) & request that they consider your case. Several users here have previously obtained free repairs after doing so, even though outside the time limit. Here's a fairly recent one,
    and another
