ESATA on a imac-g5? anychance?

What to get a good reliable firewire hdd for my imac g5 (using FCP) at the mo using usb2 which is painful...
ideally want alot of GBs (500/750) with firewire 800 - so that its future proofed for any new computers (can only use fw 400 on imac g5)
This one (Seagate free agent 750Gb)- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-FreeAgent-7200RPM-External-Software/dp/tech-data /B000PHD8NE/ref=deasmtd/202-8765712-5641409?ie=UTF8&qid=1191867883&sr=8-6
is 750 GB, FW 400 and uses eSata - what the **** is eSata and can i connect this to my imac-g5? is there a special adaptor i would need and could i get the 3.GBs per second speed (is it equal/faster than Firewire 800?)

This is what eSata is:http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-esata.htm but it's not available for G5s. The fastest you can transfer data is 400 firewire, which is preferable to USB, as it's faster. Get the drive, and when yu upgrade, you can use the faster transfer modes.

  • ESATA external and iMac

    Hello,
I have the latest iMac 24", 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory.
I'm looking for another external drive. Can this mac use eSATA drives? Sorry I don't much about them.
    Thanks.

I don't have personal experience with them so I can't comment from that point of view. I would recommend doing a search on this forum and Google them to see if there are any recurring issues.
I did just that, it seems the only thing I found was make sure the firmware is up to date and some have reported them being noisy.
Personally I use Lacie Quadra D2's (currently have 3 of them) and have had very good luck with them. I have them daisy chained together. My thoughts are it's worth it to pay a few more $ for them if I have critical information on them, even then I make sure I have redundant backups.

  • Add eSata to Intel iMac (Early 2008)

Would it perhaps be possible for me to add eSata to an Early 2008 iMac?
System profiler only shows 1 esata port, and it has my internal plugged in to it.
I've searched Google and found a few people who suggest that it's possible, but I can't find any help in what components to use.
Anyone here tried to do so?

Depends on which Intel Mac you have.
Mine has two FireWire 400 ports.
The more recent models have one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 port. The FireWire 800 port looks different; it's rectangular. You can use a cheap adapter to convert from FIreWire 800 to 400.
If your current hard drive is a 3.5-inch drive, the enclosure probably has a daisy chain port (and extra FireWire port). So one option is to connect your new drive to the back of your existing drive.
Another option is to get a self-powered FireWire hub. For example
    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-FireWire-6-Port-Hub-F5U526-APL/dp/B0006BHCEK/ref=pdbbs_sr1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227916824&sr=8-1
And yet another option is for use USB 2.0. I've been using one external drive through USB recently, and it works just fine. It's supposedly slower and less efficient than either FireWire 400 or 800, but for casual use, it seems just fine.

  • ESATA and the iMac G5

I'm considering an additional second external hardrive. (A backup clone to my first external HD).
I've been reading a lot about a very quick connection called "eSATA" which some of the external HD manufacturers offer. (For example some offer a combo USB2/eSATA approach).
Can anyone let me know if the iMac G5 can connect to eSATA?
Is it possible? Is it a simple cable swap-out? etc etc
    Thank you in advance.

    iMac G5 20"/iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    No Rich,
There is no eSata port on the iMac G5, and therefore no way of connecting it.
Firewire 400 remains by far the best means of connecting an external drive to your iMac G5. You'll find it is much faster than USB2 in "real world" usage, and it is also the only way that you can use an external hard drive as a "boot" disk with these computers.
By all means get a combined FW400/FW800/USB2/eSata enclosure, if you wish, but you won't get any additional speed benefit from the extra cost of doing so as the FW 400 will be the only one it is really worth using. (The only advantage is possible future compatibility when you upgrade your computer next time and greater interconnectivity options if you intend to connect the drive to other computers with the relevant ports).
    Cheers

  • ESATA and 24" iMac

Hello - Pardon my ignorance, but I am getting ready to purchase two LaCie d2 500 Gb drives, and I would like to know if the iMac can use the eSATA connection.
    Thanks in advance...

No. The iMac has USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 ports. There are no external SATA ports.

No. There is no eSATA interface on the iMac. Use Firewire.

  • Fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac?

What is the fastest and best external hard disks for video use with Imac (I believe it is currently not possible to use Esata on the Imac).

For DVCam. HDV etc, I'm a fan of the G-raid drives. From personal experience they
are very solid performers. I only had one issue with a new drive that was replaced
next day. They are not the cheapest drives to be found but the build quality
    is excellent. Check out:

  • SATA port on an iMac

Considering upgrading and giving my mini to daughter.
Is it possible to get an iMac configured or modified to include a serial ATA port, for faster transfer speeds with an external HD?
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Without some dodgy jury-rig there is no way to add eSATA to an iMac.
Very high speed external hard disks should be connected via FW800 (800Mbps). Most hard drives will be limited by mechanisms not the transfer bus unless you are connecting multiple drives. If you truly need that much speed you should look at a workstation like the Mac Pro.

  • I am going to buy a new external hard drive and have some questions first

Although I asked this question several years ago, I would like to ask it again, just if in case technology in general or external hard drives in particular have changed in any significant ways.
I need to replace a 1 terabyte LaCie external hard drive that died on me after a few years.
    1. I am afraid of buying another LaCie. What other brands are reliable? I heard that Western Digital is. Also another brand beginnibg with S (so helpful, I know).
    2. Do I have to look for a drive that is MAC FORMATTED? I vaguely recall this term from years ago. I also remember another term that I was to look out for, but I don't remember what it was. Something like ”chronicled“ but obviously not that.
    3. Should I get more than 1 terabyte? Right now I have an old, old 125 gigabyte LaCie that still lives, but it is so small that it is almost nothing
    4. What do you think about buying external hard drives fron Costco as opposed to from the Apple Store?
    ~L

Ziatron, you wrote ”All you do is open the enclosure and the hard drive plugs in. (done.)“ What enclosure?
This is the enclosure I like, it needs a hard drive to work : http://www.cooldrives.com/ox93saiihadr.html
    But there are many others.
looking at my two dead laCie ext. hard drives and they don't have ”enclosures.“ Just holes in the back to receive the cables.
A hard drive enclosure is a box or case the actual hard drive goes into. Look at the images in the link above. You can see what is inside.
This hard drive goes inside the above cool drive enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD20EADS/dp/B001RB1TI S/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258862242&sr=8-1
You recommended getting a hard drive with a Firewire connection, but most of the hard drives have USB.
Well maybe, the better drives are Firewire.
    Should that matter to me?
Yes, Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Is USB a whole lot slower than Firewire if I am transferring materials?
Firewire is faster and _more reliable._
Take a look at the link below, "Build Your Own External Hard Drive". The enclosure I like is easier to use.
    http://www.harmony-central.com/articles/tips/hard_drive/
    http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/externalhdcase.htm
Also you need a Mac Pro to use eSATA, with a iMac use the Firewire port.

  • Will they install an SSD drive for me?

    Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a 2.5" SSD drive for my Intel-based iMac - will the Apple Store install it and move my existing HD to the slave bus for me? I've still got AppleCare left.
If so, how much would they charge me for?
Also, is there an eSATA solution for iMacs?
    Thanks
    Georgios

The simple answer is no they will not because it's not something they sell. Also I don't believe a 2.5" SSD will fit, the bay is designed for 3.5" hd's. Regarding eSATA drives, again your iMac does not have an SATA port on the back so it will not support an eSATA drive, however if you have an iMac with a FW 800 port that would fine, while not as quick as SATA it's a good solution.
If you still want to go down the SSD path then you can look to see if there are any repair centers in your area that will do the work. That being said if your machine is covered by warranty I'm pretty sure installing a SSD drive would void it.

  • Upgrading my 320G to a 1TB

Is it possible to bring my iMac to an authorized dealer and have them replace the 320G internal drive with a 1TB?
    Sean

If you use the internal drive as your start up drive and then save documents on the external drive then you are saving space on the internal drive and can use it for whatever you want. Personally I keep things files valuable on my external drive (photos, music and sensitive documents) I would recommend against using a USB 2.0 drive for and external storage drive especially if you will be accessing it a lot. I would recommend a FW or preferably a FW 800 drive, you will find the IO speeds of FW800 far superior to USB 2.0. OWC's Mercury line and Lacie Quadra D2 line are both highly recommended on this forum. Both have USB, FW and FW 800 connections and both also have eSATA however the iMacs don't have an external eSATA port. If they did have an eSATA port I'd recommend using that as it's IO is even faster than FW800.

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • Adding an esata port on new iMac?

Is there a way to add an esata port to the new model iMac?

OWC has offered this in the past, but I don't think it's possible with the new model iMacs, they way the teardown would have to be done.
On the other hand, with Thunderbolt on the new iMacs, why bother with eSATA?

  • 2007 24" iMac eSATA ports

    For anyone out there interested...
I have successfully installed 2 eSATA ports on my 24" 2007 Aluminum iMac.
I am very impressed with the results!
I am running Mountain Lion off an internal SSD (which I also upgraded) and can boot from external eSATA connected drives.
If anyone would like more information on how to do this, lemme know.
I found that when I was seeking this info, it was rather scarce on the web.  Not anymore!
It's not that tough an upgrade... especially if you do it the way I did.
And it costs approximately $60 (usd) in parts, give-or-take shipping, etc, etc.
    Cheers!
    J.
P.S.  I passionately love Apple & their products, but I must admit, my greatest disappointment is the lact of eSATA support.  I get the Thunderbolt perspective... but eSATA is just one of those standards that is waaaay too common and will be around for a very, very long time.  Just support the **** thing.

    It's really straight-forward, actually.
    Here is a parts list:
The eSATA port to SATA cables you can buy almost anywhere.
The Mini PCIe to SATA card I purchased from M-Factors, $35
    http://www.mfactors.com/pm362-sata-to-mini-pcie-adapter
It shipped really fast, I was impressed.  It also seemed to work fine (and still is) without installing drivers.  It was recognized and booted off an external drive without hitting the option key.  Pretty cool.
The reason you MUST purchase this card, as opposed to any other is the proximity to the LCD screen.  There is absolutely no room between the card and the LCD.  Other manufacturers' cards required people to solder eSATA connections.  I can't risk my iMac or external drives failing, so I needed a more refined solution.
Try as hard as I could, I couldn't find 90 degree SATA to eSATA cables anywhere.  Just crazy!
So I purchased the BYTECC 90 degree Male-Female adapters from Newegg.
Pulled out the Airport Card, plugged them new parts all-together, et voila!
I decided to drill holes in the bottom perferated grill on the Aluminum housing.  Not the most beautiful of solutions, but it works!
