ESata on Satellite L550-ST5702

I just purchased an external eSata hardrive and when I transfer files to it the transfer rate is only as fast (or even slower) than when I use USB. I am using Windows 7 Professional x86. Am I missing drivers or something? How can I increase the speed to the 3 GB/s eSata promises?

Seems like the forums are worthless, nobody answer you on your 2010 posting, I am gettings frustration with Toshiba, they Northamerica Phone 1800 #, doesnt work seems like does not work in canada, the option to request a recovery drivers doesnt recognize my Serial # for a L450 laptop. seems like the best option is to buy a new laptop but from other brand name.

  • Satellite L550-32bit vs 64 bit...

    hi folks,
I just purchased a Satellite-L550 on labor day.  Received it today.  In playing around with it, I noticed that it has vista home premium x64 on it...I didnt notice this when I purchased it (I chose the ST5702 option instead of the ST5701 option).
Turns out, I need this computer to be able to work from home when necessary...this requires use of a Cisco Systems VPN Client...My understanding is that none of these are supported in x64 (vista, xp, etc) yet, and my company only has support for 32 bit windows...
So I would like to reformat my computer and install Vista Ultimate (32 bit) on my machine so that I can run the vpn client...I have Vista Ultimate already, and I have generated the applications and drivers dvd.  I am concerned (since I dont know much about 32 vs 64) that some of the hardware in this st5702 (L550) will not be compatible and I will have problems getting everything working again...
Does anyone know if this will be possible or not?  Or have any other ideas about what I should do?  Is contacting Toshiba even remotely worth my time?
thanks for any assistance you can provide...

Any hardware that supports Vista 64bit will be fully supported under Vista 32bit so you are good to go there.  The opposite is not true though.  Not all hardware that is supported by 32bit is supported by 64bit.  You should have no problems performing this with the understanding that you will need to wipe the hard drive first then do a clean install of Vista 32 (you can't do an in place upgrade). The only hardware change that you will notice is that you will only see and be able to use between 3.0 and 3.5gb of the 4 gig of ram that is installed under Vista 32 (it's a limitation of a 32bit Operating System).
From what I can tell from looking at the two systems specs the main difference between the two hardware wise is the 5702 has 4gig of ram vs 3gig on the 5701 and the 5702 has a Higher End ATI Graphics Chipset vs the 5701's middle of the road at best Intel Graphics Chipset so you actually have a better laptop hardware wise.
If you wanted to do so and have enough hard disk space to spare you could install Vista Ultimate 32 to a different partition and have both your existing Vista 64 and the new Vista Ult 32 available to use.  See this guide but substitute Vista 64 for Vista already installed and Vista 32 for Windows 7.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Satellite L550 - System specifications

Have looked through searches but no luck - just need to find out whether my satellite L550 with i5 4GR running Windows 7 Pro has the capability of supporting an eSATA external drive that I want to build as the usb ready mades take forever to backup etc.
It has been suggested to me to find out if my machine's mobo is able to "hot swap" and is in AHCI mode - but how do i find out this info from the machine? Am fairly new to this sort of stuff and any help would be really appreciated.
Just as a matter of interest too - if I can use such a device is it "removed" in the same way as a USB device?

Hiyya Xardas my L550 is marked as PSLWSA-01000Q - is this what you mean?
I was just after something on the machine that willl tell me whether or not I can use an external eSATA HDD for backup and Scott Muellers site states that these come as 1.5 or 3 Gb transfer rates and to check to see what one's machine is capable of before setting the drive to one of those settings.
For example the drives come usually as 3Gb but have a lead that halves those different rates for compatability reasons for the machine one is using it on. In my case it is this Satellite.
Sorry to be a nuisance but I find the backups using USB externals take so long.
    Regards
    J

    Hello
Your posting is pretty confusing and it is not easy to understand you.
I dont understand which setup file you want to use but you cannot install operating system with click on some setup file.
You can install Windows 7 using Toshiba recovery image (if you got one) or using original Microsoft Windows 7 installation disc.
So please be nice and explain to me which disc do you have and how do you try to install Windows 7.

  • Satellite L550-1CC starts with Consistancy disks check

    Hi all
    I have a Satellite L550-1CC, running Windows 7.
Recently on start up I have been receiving the message " one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency " and then it runs a scan, and after 2 0r 3 minutes boots up to windows as normal.
This does not happen all the time, but recently has been more often than not.
Have I a problem with my hard disk?
    Any sugestions?

    Hi Xardas
I have noticed no noise from the HDD.
I have just checked Windows Event Viewer as you suggest and it has come up with lots of Warnings, around 50 or so, and even more Errors, about 100, that's just today.
The first error is "McAfee Real-time Scanner", however this program is not installed.
How do I get rid of this?

  • Satellite L550-11k - HDMI + VGA at the same time?

    Hi there,
I have Satellite L550-11k laptop, and i was wondering if i can have external monitor working hooked up on VGA port and HDMI monitor working ( or just audio from hdmi ) at the same time.
I tried and have no luck making it work together.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 as OS, and i think it's not problem related to operating system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards

I was able to select HDMI and VGA,( my built in monitor turned off ) but as i don't have a third monitor ( only laptop one and one external ) i could not test is there a picture on HDMI output but i can say there is no sound so i assume there is no picture also. I just needed sound from HDMI. Maybe i will be able to test it on summer. Thanks on your quick reply. I was wondering is this is a limitation of the graphics adapter ? By the way, it seems Dynadock is not compatible with Linux operating systems.

  • ODD on my Satellite L550-11J is damaged - looking for new suitable device

    hello,
the dvr device of my toshiba satellite L550-11J (bought in 2009) with windows vista 64 seems to be broken. it is a "pioneer dvd-rw dvrtd09a". it doesn`t show on windows anymore, not in the explorer, not in the device manager (if this s the english name of it, i don`t know, i am german speaking). it doesn`t even show in the bios or boot device, so i think it is not a software problem but the hardware is broken.
which new dvr device is suitable for my notebook? i cannot find the same dvr device on amazon or elsewhere to buy, so i guess i need another one that suits.please help.
    best wishes
    no-idea

    addendum:
sometimes, the dvr device is back for a little while, but 90% of the time it is not recognized. i guess it has a defective contact. i already took it out, blew into it and but it back in. no result. it has power and it can be opened and closed. cd`s that are put in are turning for a few seconds, than it stops.
when the device is gone, it cannot be found in the bios!!!

  • Satellite L550: some CDs does not play correctly - scratching noise

I have a Satellite L550 and I was happy with it so far, as long as I didn't use CD listening.
Now I found out, that some CDs will not be played correctly (scratching noise), but some are fine.
However, when I take the "scratching" ones into a standard CD-player, it works fine there too.
    What can I do?

    Hi
Scratching noice??? Did you try different software?
Winamp or VLC player are great, small applications.
What sound card do you have? Is it Realtek? If yes, then you should try sound driver update.
Furthermore Realtek sound chip support the Realtek HD audio Manager which can be found in control panel. There you can change the sound properties
But maybe it a compatibility issue between the disk and CD/DVD drive this ca be possible too

  • 5.1 Sound for Satellite L550

    Hello!
I bought a new 5.1 sound system but unfortunately my onboard sound card doesn't support it.
Is it possible to install another onboard sound card and - if yes - which ones can i use?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jnny

Hello - and sorry that i did not reply earlier.
    I have a satellite l550-11j.
To be honest, I don't really know the difference of sound between the onboard sound card and ones that support 5.1.
As far as I know it should be able to decode the sound as well so that it works just like that, right?
Or does it make a huge difference?
Another problem is, that I don't use windows but ubuntu, but well, I guess I can find a way to solve that issue as well.
    Greetings,
    Jnny

  • Satellite L550-18M - Cannot find any Touchpad Drivers

    Hello.
I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L550-18M and I can`t seem to locate any drivers for the full use of my touchpad (can`t use scrolling, nor zooming functions).
I tried installing some synaptics from the our sugestions official website and some synaptics drivers from a Toshiba Satellite L500D, but it didn`t help.
    Please send your suggestions.
    Thanks

    Hi mate
I dont know what Windows OS you have but I assume you are using Win 7 64bit. Right?
The L550-18M belongs to PSLNEE series.
It seems that there are no many drivers published for this series.
But there are touchpad drivers for other Satellite L550 series.
The Alps Electric and Synaptics touchpad drivers are released.
    In driver download form choose;
    - Satellite
    - Satellite L series
    - Satellite L550
    - All (short model)
    - All (operating system)
    - Touchpad driver
Then you will get all drivers for touchpad.
PS: be sure that the touchpad settigns are configured in control panel -> mouse -> device settigns

  • Satellite L550-11K - Device manager shows wrong CPU

I have bought the Satellite L550-11K to myself and because stan it has a p8700 processor with 2.53 GHz. However, in the device manager it stands 2 times a T4200 processor with 2 GHz!!!?

    Hey,
I had the same issue that the CPU in my desktop computer wasnt listed properly so I have removed the CPU from device manager (right click > uninstall) and restart the notebook. You have to remove both entries.
After restarting the CPU will be recognized again and this time it should be listed properly. For me it worked. :)
Another question, are you running the preinstalled OS or have you installed another OS?

  • Re: Satellite L550-129 doens't support Toshiba external HDD

Toshiba Satellite L550-129 doens't support Toshiba external hdd store.e canvio.
Al other thosiba laptops in the familie work with the store.e canvio and a lot of older coputers?????

If your external HDD is not recognized, then this can be caused by low power supply from USB port or its simply an software issue.
The Toshiba page http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/chd/store-externe-festplatten/canvio/ says that STOR.E CANVIO needs 900mA
The usual USB 2.0 standard provides 500mA
So you need an USB Y cable to connect such HDD to two USB 2.0 ports

  • Satellite L550 - SMART Reports HDD Failure Soon - What To Do?

    Toshiba Satellite L550-113
On startup, I get a SMART message reporting HDD failure soon, and I'm requested to hit F1 before it will continue to boot to Windows (Vista 32 Bit).
The actual message from the Toshiba HDD Alert application is as follows:
    Disk0
Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary.
I've ordered a new HDD to replace the failing HDD (can't be bothered p*ssing about with RMA's and tech support).
However, is it possible to fix the old HDD once it's been removed? If I reformat it, will this do anything, or is it more serious than that?

Thanks for the advice. I used the Win7 backup process using an external HDD, then installed the new HDD and restored the system. The built-in Toshiba backup system software was corrupted & missing, so Win7 backup was my best option.
The laptop belonged to a family member who passed away last year, so I've no idea if the warranty still existed. I needed to get the laptop up and running as soon as possible, so going through the RMA process with Toshiba was always going to take too long.
My question still stands... is there anything I can do with the old drive to get it out of SMART mode failure?
