Esata port multiplier explaination please

I am looking for some advice about an esata enclosure setup. I would like to move into a multiple drive array for FCP and would like to know how the port multiplier works.
I already have figured out that hardware RAID is superior to software RAID. My question is whether I can get an enclosure with the parts that handle the multiplying (I already have a newer technolgy extenders cable product), or whether I need both that and a card which handles the multiplying?
If someone could explain to me what I need, and hopefully how it works, it will be much appreciated.

I believe I have found out that it does NOT support port multiplier from within an enclosure - not exactly sure why. That came from a post on this forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10117571&#10117571
So then the question becomes, if I get a card like the Sonnet Tempo E2P (which does not have port multiplier) will I still benefit if I choose an enclosure which has an internal port multiplier? Or do I need both card AND enclosure - both with port multipliers???

    I have just purchased a Zotac Nano computer which uses Intel HM77 Express chipset and has an eSATA port. I was surprised to notice my 8-bay hard disk enclosure did not work on this machine. I have read online that the Intel chipset supports eSATA port multipler in hardware but that the Windows drivers do not have it supported. However, some reports are that it should work under Linux.
    Does anyone have any idea about getting the on-board eSATA port to work with port multipliers?

  • Dv7-3065dx esata port multiplier

    Anyone know if the dv7-3065dx esata port hardware can function as a port multiplier? I want to purchase a Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive but it requires a port multiplier. I have the single slot thermaltake blackx right now and it works awesome, but I'm lazy and want the dual one so I don't have to switch out the hard drives.

    I have an HP ProBook 4520s running Windows 7 64 bit.
    Is the eSATA port compatible with port multiplier products? If not, is there any hardware I can purchase to solve this?

  • ESATA Port Multiplier-Is it installed

    I have 2007 Mac Pro. I recently installed an eSATA port.
    It works fine with a single eSATA drive connected.
    Just today, I purchased a Thermaltake: Blac X Duet

    On a notice included in the literature provided in the box, it states:
    "This product requires the host computer to have PORT MULTIPLIER function on the eSATA port in order to recognize the multiple connected HDD."
    Is this something built into the eSATA card or in the computer?
    Is there an update that I can download?
    The eSATA card is connected to an internal SATA port (as I'm sure everyone knows how they are connected).
    Any info would be appreciated.

    The built-in SATA ports do not support port multiplier. For that you need a PCI-e SATA card, such as:

  • Does the Envy 17 have Port Multiplier for eSATA?

    I'm looking at buying a multiple bay drive enclosure like this or this. They both support USB or eSATA host connections, but naturally you get faster speeds with eSATA, but for the computer to recognize all drives, it says I need to have Port Multiplier. I've looked and looked and looked and can't really find anywhere that says whether the 17 does or doesn't. I'd also rather have a software controller rather than a hardware. Any help?

    eSATA III is actually faster than USB 3.0, and that's assuming the enclosure I'm buying even has USB 3.0. On top of that, 3.0 doesn't even have that great of transfer speed. The fastest write I've had with my external HDD is around 90 Mb/s

    The SATA Controller of my Notebook is the Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller. My question is: does this controller support port multiplying? I want to connect a RAID-Drive on my eSATA but the computer just recognizes one of the two drives. If it is supporting port multiplying: how do I activate or use it?

    as far as i know this chipset supports raid "0+1"
    how about the readme which comes with this driver?
    try this:
    - opening storage manager
    - klick (right) on the device
    - choose create volume
    if your external drive has a ready built raid
    the OS wont see the seperate drives because the raidfunktion of your external drive shows only one drive to the OS...
    please read the manual of your external raid device to check what options you have...

  • K9A2 Platinum esata port and Install and Usage of esata External Hard Drive

    I just bought a sata hard drive and an icy dock enclosure for backup purposes. Having never used one before can someone explain how this works?
    I have the hard drive in the enclosure, no problem there. I plugged it into the esata port on the back of my motherboard, but vista won't recognize it and when I reboot and go into the BIOS, I don't see it there either.  I have purchased Acronis True Image 11 Home for backup and mirroring purposes. I wish to mirror my existing internal drive to this new external drive.
    Questions:
    1. Can I use the esata ports on the motherboard for this drive, or should I use the PCI bracket and plug it into one of the existing sata ports on the motherboard? If esata port, exactly how do they work? Are there BIOS settings for the esata ports or do they operate more like a usb connection?
    2. Do I need to do anything with this drive before using it; format, install operating system...??
    3. Are the esata external drive considered plug and play or do I need to plug it in before I boot my computer.

    Everything seems to be working as I would have expected at this point, with the exception of the size of the mirrored drives.
    I decided to make another mirror onto the 3rd drive making all 3 drives identical. So now I would expect all three drives to show the same "GB free" while viewing with Vista explorer.  The odd thing is, is that which ever drive I make bootable - SATA5 port and becomes the C: drive,  shows 226GB free. The other drives, either as E: or J: will show as 268GB free.  Most be an Acronis or Acronis user (me) issue/oddity?
    But bottom line, the sata and esata ports seem to be working as I would expect. Though plugging the external hard drive in before booting (power on or off, needs to be unplugged from the esata port) seems to hang at the FasTrack screen as described above.
    My only guess to why this all seems to be working currently is that I don't think I ever had my bios set correctly. After enabling the onboard controller, having the drive actually plugged into SATA5, then rebooting, selecting boot sequence and selecting the raid drive as the first boot device. At least this is my recollection, I made so many bios changes previously that I thought I had it all covered. 
    Any thoughts?  I think I will try to get an answer on the Acronis size difference before I try to setup my RIAD 1, since that would require erasing two drives, per your instructions here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113738.0

  • W701 esata port suffering from poor design/qua​lity from manufactur​e?

    After having my W701 for 5 weeks, with 2 replacment of MB due to different problems, last time bios and port problems, I got i back from Lenovo today. I had reported it with a no functional/very poor functional esata port.
    What happens is that:
    With my lacire drive;
    When I write to internaldrive everything is ok - when I write from my internal drive to the external it stops and says that the disc is no longer attached.
    With my chieftech cabinet with esata port:
    Writing from works fine - writing to starts good, then hangs for a minute or so - then drop from 50 MBps til 18 MBps, then continous, and does it again.
    When I use them against my HP Homeserver EX495 it works like a charm, so non of the disk is the problem, unless the have some love for my HP, and hate Lenovo - but that would seem rather absurd to me.
    The last MB didn't work better, and the new one dosn't either. Anyone who has an idea? I can't belive that 2 MB has the same problem, or? Allthough the IBM technician admitted when asked that he had not tested the esata port, he figured that since it was on MB, and that was changed it would work fine - but obviously that wasn't right.

    I did another test now after packing a .rar file. The transfer to the lacie failed, but to chieftech it went fine. But - sending huge .tiff files was the reason of buying esata disk, so that dosn't really help me, other than telling that sending 100 files will crash, and 1 file is less probable to fail, but has currently a 50/50 chance of doing so.
    I tried with the chieftech later - and it repeated the problem - it started with 6 MBps - den stopped - worked again - and so it kept on working.
    How I tested this time:
    1 file was zipped on my server - 2,5 GB (1)
    1 file was zipped on the internal drive - 5,5 GB (2)
    Transfer of file 1 from server to drive went fine to Chieftech , but failed on Lacie.
    Transfer of file 2 from internal to both Cheiftech and Lacie failed big time. Chieftech froze explorer, and until I plugged the disk out by napping the cable out it wasn't possible to use the computer. Lacie failed after 5 seconds.
    The first times I tried to transfer 129 files - and that didn't work any better.

    Sorry, but I have no suggestions for solutions to your first post.
    But, the W700 can run without RAID; you just need to turn it off. Backup all files before proceeding, during the boot process you can press CTRL + I to enter the RAID BIOS. Simply remove the drives from the RAID and install the OS to HDD 0 or 1. The other HDD will then be an "extra". After doing this you may also be able to hide RAID in BIOS, can't remember 100%, but should be do-able.

  • FW800 Exteral Hard drive and a port multiplier?

    Not sure if i can get my answer here, but hoping someone will point me in the right direction.
    Basically I am building my own Storage solution.
    I have an imac.
    FW800
    I have an external FW800 drive that I have pulled apart for the FW800 to Sata Bridge
    This is then connected to a Port multiplier that should give me 5 Sata ports to then attach 5 sata devices.
    The External firewire800 bridge has an Oxford Semi conductor OXUF924DSB-FBAG
    PDF details here, this suggests that it is already capable of to SATA dries but te board of course only has one. but also says that it supports port multipling.
    The port muliplier I have is a
    Lycom ST-126RM SATA II 3Gbps 1-To-5 Port Multiplier bridge board (for Rack Mount)
    everything has relevant power supplies attacted. But nothing is showing in the disc utility.
    Can anyone point me in the direction of anything tried and test please?

    What type of device and what do you mean by "doesn't work so good"?
    It could be that the FW controller is dying - I've had that happen to me and it caused me no end of trouble until I replaced the device (in my case it was an old LaCie external optical drive).

    I have a K9A2 Platinum mobo. It has a Promise T3 controller for the ESata ports. I can find no documentation on this controller, so maybe the company who made them went out of business. I am looking for the information about this controller of whether it supports a "port multiplier function" since I am considering buying a MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay eSATA & USB 2.0 External Enclosure from Icy Dock.

  • Safe to have OWC add eSATA port to 2010 iMac??

    Hey Everybody!! OWC is currently running a promotion called the "OWC Turnkey eSATA Add-On/Upgrade Program for iMac 27" '2010'" I love my iMac but because I use it in a music studio I could REALLLY use the extra eSATA port. For $169 (excluding shipping), that's a pretty darn good deal.
    I've never heard of an upgrade-port option like this for iMacs. Is it safe for me to pay OWC to do this or is it a risky move for my machine? I trust OWC a great deal but obviously it's not like I'd be having Apple install the port themselves. Any opinions, fact or references you can share with me about this one, please do.

    OWC is a reputable company that much I can say. While I know they warrant their work I am not sure how Apple would feel about it from a product warranty point of view. This is a question I think you should ask OWC and if the say Apple OK's it you should ask for that in writing.
    Going forward while iMacs are great machines and are very capable if they don't have the feature set you need I would recommend looking at the Mac Pro line.

    Does anybody know if the eSATA port available thought the W700 MiniDock is supports the Port Multiplier function?  There is a really interesting, just announced new drive docking station from Sharkoon (SATA QuickPort Quattro) that I'd love to try, if it has a chance of working via the eSATA port.
