ESD question on iBook repair

I am going to do a self-repair to an iBook G3 because the machine is out of warranty. I have the necessary tools and repair guide thanks to iFixIt. I am just wondering if anyone can answer these questions about using an ESD wristband, to prevent an electo-static discharge:
1) Is there an ideal spot to attach the alligator clip (on the iBook or any machine)?
2) Should a power cord be attached? It seems to stand to reason that, when attached, there is a direct connection to ground through the plug's grounding wire, but I seem to remember in my past that having a computer plugged in while doing a repair is a bad idea.
Any help is appreciated.
iBook (14.1 LCD 900 MHz 32 VRAM)
1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 | 2.1 GHz iMac G5 | 30GB 5th Gen. iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Okay.
Before you unplug it and start, assemble all your tools so you don't have to get up from your chair during the procedure. Sit down, touch any one of the metal rims around one of the rubber feet. Then unplug the adapter from the iBook and remove the battery.
When you remove the keyboard, touch the RAM shield with the clip to make sure that you have equalized any static electricity.
After you have removed the bottom case, you can attach the clip to the metal edge of the battery compartment.

Is this serious as it seems to be working fine.
Can I repair it with a retail Panther install disc that I have.
    Any help would be welcome,

I think that I am going to buy a retail Leopard install disc and start from scratch.
Good plan. It is a good idea to have the install disks for the OS you are running. Note that the Retail version does not include the full range of iLife apps. You can install them from the original disks, if you have them, or if you have iLife installed, and want to preserve it you can do an Archive and Install or choose the upgrade option.

  • IBook repair recommendation- Apple?

Hi- I have an iBook G4 that is broken- freezes on boot, sometimes before getting to the finder, sometimes once the finder has started, sometimes doesn't get to boot at all.
Fails AHT with an error about the video RAM, but also won't work in target mode- so basically something is fried on the logic board.
Looking for recommendations on repair- does Apple have a flat rate repair for iBooks if I just carry it to an Apple Store, or am I better going to an independent or one of the mail in services- I trust Apple more but don't want to spend a lot more money than another option.
Any chance these logic board issues will get picked up in a recall? i am starting to read about this a bit- this computer is out of warranty (it is a friends, as I always buy AppleCare) but only by about six months, and has been well cared for- my sister's iBook G4 went through like six motherboards while under warranty before they gave her a new one.

Since the Hardware Test fails, and there is no AppleCare, I suggest still taking it into an Apple Authorized Service Center near you and compare the price and time it would take to what you might be able to get from one of these two places as well:

    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
Any chance these logic board issues will get picked up in a recall?
As for the answer to the above question, that is the kind of question you won't find an answer to here, as it would require speculation.

  • Basic questions about recovery/repair preparation

When I got my machine, over two years ago, I made repair disks on DVD's per Toshiba's instructions. Now, with my nightly backups, I have it make a system disk image on a NAS device.
If I were to have a large failure and need to restore my system,  is there anything I can do now that would prevent me from having to go back to my inital system install of two+ years ago and start reinstalling everything?
I guess what I'm wondering is if would making another set of more recent repair disks be useful at all in giving me a "jump start" on recovery and how my scheduled system disk image fits into the picture. I've heard some folks say system disk images from a NAS device can't be used but they were not particularly credible sources so I don't know.
Probably pretty basic questions, but having recently had a scare with my machine, I want to be sure I'm as prepared as I can be.
    Thanks.

If you cannot boot from an optical disc or flash drive to a program that restores from that NAS image, Sally, then it's useless. What system/procedures are you using? Read the manual.
The original recovery discs in my view are not very helpful. I would use them only to establish whether hardware is at fault when debugging a problem. Daily backups are the best source of recovery. We keep ours for ten days and test the recovery procedure from time to time.
Most of us who make backup disk images create them on an external drive connect via USB. Windows 7 already has such a backup program. One can boot from a repair disc to restore that image.
As you realize, this is important Let's sort it out.

  • A Cautionary Tale + Question about ibook hard drive

I made the switch to Mac almost two years ago; I love my ibook G4, but I wish I had purchased AppleCare. Now I've got an odd HD problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen.
Right now the HD is OK; obviously, I'm using it to post this message. But fairly often I will get the whirly, the computer will absolutely freeze (no F9, no option-command-escape, nothing). Guess what makes it better? Tilting the entire computer up at about a 30 degree angle! Everything goes back to normal--the HD kicks back into place, the whirly goes away, and my computer is fine--until I place the computer on a level surface again.
I have a theory as to why this is happening, and I'm wondering whether it's correct. Stupidly, I have in the past carried my ibook around while it's open. Recently I heard an odd groaning sound coming from the HD while doing so. I bet that I scratched the HD somehow or loosened it in some way that it only works when it's tilted in a certain direction. Do I need to replace the HD? I'm on level ground right now, and, knock on wood, everything's OK.
Any similar experiences out there, or responses to my theory? Thank you.
    iBook G4 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Andrew, if you're booted from a Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) install disk, you should be able to open the Disk Utility from the Installer menu without actually installing Mac OS X. What does the Disk Utility tell you about your iBook's hard drive? Is the S.M.A.R.T. status failing? Are you able to "repair disk" and/or "repair disk permissions" on the hard drive? Have you run the Apple Hardware Test CD? Although it does seem to sound like a hard drive hardware issue, before you go about replacing the hard drive, it might be a good idea to go through these troubleshooting steps to eliminate things like a bad logic board first. What if you go about the cost and time to replace the hard drive but it's actually the ATA controller on the logic board that's the problem?

  • IBook Repair

My iBook came back from being serviced yesterday -- I'm really happy with their fast turnaround and the quality of work under AppleCare. However, I really wish Apple would explain exactly what they repaired -- Can anyone identify these Apple parts for me?
    APPB-630-4661 MLB - 1GHz
BST APP-632-0240 FLEX CKT ASSY HDD IBOOK G4 14
    APPB-655-1112 DA TOSHIBA
I know for sure they replaced the hard drive. What are the other parts?

    Hi Joyce,
The hard drive (655-1112) and ribbon cable to the drive (632-0240) were replaced.

The other was the main logic board (MLB)

  • IBook Repair, Missing RAM

We sent in an iBook G4 for a repair last week. We purchased the computer with an extra 512MB of RAM so it had 768MB total. When the computer came back from Apple the RAM was missing. The worst thing is that Apple is not going to correct the problem. They will not return our RAM and they will not pay for us to buy new RAM. We've already spoken to several people at Apple. Our next step is I suppose to file a police report. Any advice on resolving this issue?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

These people are weird; had a similar situation.
I sent my iBook to the repair store for my "freezing problem."
They fixed it beautifully, but the outer case of my iBook looked as if it had been in the Iraq war for six days.
I called, complained, and I got my way.
All you need to do is call them up [AppleCare], with your orignal receipts (iBook and the extra installed RAM) and demand for your RAM to be placed back in. You have the proof, just fax them all the information as your proof. If they refuse, I suggest you take legal action.

  • Audio Question re: iBook

Hi all. Quick question on the iBook G4. My wife wanted to watch a movie so she plugged headphones in to the jack. She then complained that sound was only coming out of one speaker. Is this normal on the iBook? Do I need to download some software or something to provide stereo sound? I didn't know anything about the audio on the iBook.
    Thanks
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
Open system preferences from the dock, choose the 'sound' option and ensure that the slider for the balance between left and right speakers is in the middle. I have read in previous posts that the ibook can sometimes move the slider. It happened to mine once.
The other checks you can make is to ensure the headphones are fully plugged in, if the connection is loose this can affect the stero reproduction.
Also the software that you using to watch the movie check the sound preferences.
However I do think its it more than likley to be the sound setup in system preferences.
    Hope this helps.

  • IBook repaired, but what is part 630-7059?

I had a lot of issues with my new iBook that had been well documented in this forum earlier. It went back to Apple for repair, and all I can find out is that one part was replaced:
630-7059 PCBA, MLB, 1.33 GHz, BETTER, Q72B, NT
Anyone out there with the foggiest idea what this is? Might it be the logic board or something related to the power management system? Thanks!

    Hi David,
630-7059 is the Product number, MLB is the Main Logic Board, 1.33Ghz, Q72 is the code for the G4 iBook, and NT I don't know all I can think of is Windows NT which is a server platform I think. Don't quote me on this, Just guessing for the most part
    I hope this helps,
    Jon

  • I have a question about a repair

Apple is sending me a replacement phone and on the iphone 5 that I have right now I have apple care plus. How will this transfer to the new phone since they will have different serial numbers?

A friendly suggestion: search the forum before posting a question. This one is asked almost every day.
The errors are spurious. Ignore them.
Although repairing permissions is a popular ritual, it's almost never useful. Don't waste time on it unless you have a specific reason to think it's necessary.

  • Question about iBooks

well, i have an ipod touch 32gb 3rd gen with iOS 4 and i've downloaded the ibooks app but when i browse in the ibookstore none of the books have any artwork. My question is if this is because i'm in ecuador (south america) and i have an ecuadorian Apple ID and all of the books from the ecuadorian ibookstore don't have artworks?? or this is caused by a bug of the ibooks app?? or something else?? Thanks for your help and sorry for my english as i said i'm ecuadorian and my first language is spanish.

The largest free book provider is gutenberg project which doesn't provide unique artwork just the title name. You could find unique artwork using the internet after syncing your books back to itunes. You could replace the artwork like you do when adding artwork to a song. This is what I've done.

  • Is my ibook repairable?

I have a 12.1 inch 600mhz ibook that is running os x. (not sure which update)
My problem is when i powerup it shows a white blank screen and then after 60 sec. or so i get a flashing "?" and flashing older os9 happy finder icon. My brother says nothing i can do, but its a mac surely there is something i can do.
Every once in a while it will completely boot and then when i start to use it it will freeze up! any suggestions? Also i had a tech tell me that possibly the pram battery needs replacement.? thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
First of all, stay away from that tech with your iBook if he doesn't know enough about it to know that it doesn't HAVE a PRAM battery.
In order to help you, we need to know which version of the OS you are running. Some procedures work for one version, and are totally useless for others.
Have you upgraded the OS with a newer version, or is it running the same version that came on it? Do you have the system CD's that came with the iBook? Do you have any OS upgrade CD's you may have used on it?
When did you buy the iBook? Did you buy it new or used?
    How much RAM is installed?
What kind of optical drive does it have? (CD-ROM, CD/RW, DVD, or Combo?)
How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?
The more of these questions you can answer, the more likely it is that we can help you.

  • Quick Question re Permissions Repair and Accounts

Does a permissions repair apply across all user accounts? A friend has one account they can't access (sticks after log-in screen) but other accounts that they can. As a first try I want to suggest they try and repair permissions but not sure if this will work for the account they can't log-in to being run from one they can?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

Repair Permissions only affects system files used by all users, so is unlikely to fix a problem that only affects one user. That user may have a bad login item ("Accounts" system preference"). Try starting in Safe Mode.

  • Internal to external hard drive questions (G4 iBook 10.3.9)

    Hello All,
I have a G4 iBook that the internal hard drive has crashed. At the Apple store, they cannot get the drive to mount.... I have a friend that thinks he can get it to spin, and therefore thinks he can get any info that is not corrupted off the drive. That would be way cool!! He only wants me to bring him the drive, and is going to use a device that plugs into the drive just like it would in any computer, and at the other and it is USB on the end he will plug into his PC to make the transfer. Here comes where I need help. He is a PC guy, and knows nothing of Mac. If I buy an external hard drive will it need to be formatted HFS+ first in order to transfer any data that might still be good? I herd that most external drives come formatted in Fat32. Another thing is I would like to use this external hard drive for both my Mac at home, and a PC at work. i have herd that fat32 will work for both, but have herd some people having trouble with backing up a mac on a fat 32 partition.
If anyone has any other ideas of how to get what ever is left on my drive so that I can recover it, and also how I can use an external HD for mac and pc (although not simaltaniously)that would be cool.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Thanks,
    Sean

I have encountered no problems with fat32 formatted drives. I format my flash drives the same way too. For backing up files or using the drives for file transfer between a Mac and a PC it's very convenient. You can't use a fat32 formatted drive for cloning PPC Mac hard drives. Your friend may also find he can't access the hard drive through a Windoze computer.
