Esd to be replaced by esound: gnome is being pushed in

hello everyone,
i'm running XFCE on my old trusty AMD 750. Sound is provided by ESD, as advised in the wiki.
today i'm offered to replace esd by esound (which i believe is basically the same). if i choose to do so, gnome is being pushed in as dependency. But i don't want/need gnome. is this dependency really mandatory??
can i safely install esound without gnome?
thx

  • How to replace Epiphany in Gnome Shell ?

    Hi there,
when im searching for something in the gnome shell overview it offers me to search for it on the web, if nothing is found on my system.
Unfortunally epiphany is opened, but I want to use chromium.
I selected Chromium in the "Default App" Dialog but that does not take effect:
How can i change this ?

I'm looking for doing the exact same thing, but with Firefox.
    Relevant GNOME documentation:  https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ystem.html and https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stabl … ider2.html.
I also found this commit log that details a bit more which files are involved in the process of making Epiphany's search provider...
Another example with an extension that integrates Wikipedia search in the shell: Wikipedia Search Provider (GitHub page linked).
I tried creating /usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/firefox-search-provider.ini based on epiphany's one by just substituting browser names, however while this put a Firefox option in Search settings
of course it doesn't pop up in Shell results... I don't know what I should modify to do so, but it's probably a lot more effort than that
I must add that as soon as a search is done through the Shell that offers you to expand it in Epiphany/Web, a complete Epiphany/Web process (so it is WebKitWebPocess and epiphany) starts in headless-mode and eats up some of your RAM (54MB on my system), even if you didn't follow through in Epiphany (dev blog post about this "feature": https://people.gnome.org/~csaavedra/news-2013-10.html). No need to say that those processes don't terminate by themselves either, and if you do it manually it'll crash-restart your session.
As I wasn't happy with this I disabled Web search provider in GNOME Control Center (Preferences > Search) and use the Web Search Provider extension, the only that allows you to search through configured search provider AND respect your default browser choice AFAICT... Let us know if you find something else!

  • My home button is getting stuck. I've purchased the express replacement plan and am now being told I didn't.  I love my iPhone but will not continue to pay for services over and over. I need my phone fixed but will not pay again.

I need help to repair my phone and purchase the express replacement plan in 2012 and am now being told there is no record of it. I need this done and seen about ASAP.

Apple does not have an "express replacement plan" so are you talking about the AppleCare program?  If so, and you did purchase that warranty extension, contact the plan by http://www.apple.com/support/applecare

  • File associations trouble in XFCE after removing Gnome

    Hi all,
I recently decided to switch to XFCE, totally replacing my previous Gnome DE, I removed gnome and all associated dependencies using "sudo pacman -Rscn gnome" then configured my new XFCE desktop to my liking, problem is that now some file associations are messed up, for example, If im on chromium and download a file, clicking "show in folder" opens up firefox instead of thunar, there were other problems, but I got them fixed by removing the contents on the folder ~/.local/share/applications/ that was filled with a lot of wine apps and some weird stuff.
Now the only thing missing is this firefox thing, no idea how to fix it, please help, also I tried removing firefox but "show in folder" doesnt do anything.
regards and thanks in advance for the help

I did read it but that didnt help, in the end what worked was regenerating the database and restarting comp. Also Xfce is a DE as the article states. Sí this behaviour wasn't normal.
Thanks a lot for the help provided

  • How to change default audio device for gnome?

My laptop has an integrated sound card, but I lately got a USB headset (headphones+mic, which works with linux btw, I tested it with GizmoProject which lets me choose which /dev/dspXX I want): http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=U200&cpc=SCH
So, how do I change the default audio device for *all* desktop sounds to the headphones? I tried the two gnome sound properties, and when I select the headset device they let me configure it but ALSA still uses the internal audio card. Why isn't there a way to easily select which device you want for your sounds as there is for BeOS, Windows and OSX?

Eugenia wrote:Well, it's still not good enough.
We can't satisfy everyone. What you want is a corner case. For most people ALSA and dmix works appropriately, and that is what esd uses by default. We cannot document and automate every configuration possible. That's up to the users.
However, if you don't want to restart gnome, try the below... I make a few assumptions, but even if they're wrong, they're hardly difficult to work around.
Just copy the /etc/esd.conf to ~/.esd.conf, make your change, then do killall esd. Presumably gnome will restart esd, and it ought to read your local config. If it doesnt, start it yourself.
Feel free to write a script that automates this, or document it on the wiki.
I have to restart Gnome to get this thing working. Other OSes *automatically* can use an alternative device. But if I change ESD, I will have to restart Gnome, no?
Well, if you try my suggestion above, no. You can restart esd yourself. And that's what all the other distros do, except with some fancy GUI.

  • GDM, gnome-session exits to login screen after a few seconds

Recently, I've done a fresh installation of Arch Linux on my girlfriends laptop. She's using gnome and would like to log in graphically using GDM.
However, when I try to login via gdm, I get kicked out of gnome after a couple of (say about 30) seconds back to the login screen. It doesn't seem to matter if I do something. Even with no input/programms/whatsoever, the session ends after a short time.
The problem appears to be related to gdm, not gnome, though, because if I do not start GDM but launch my gnome-session via 'startx' from a terminal everything works perfectly fine.
I've read something about KMS issues somewhere and tried adding "nomodeset" to my kernel command line. The kickout was gone but gnome started in failback mode and issueing "gnome-shell --replace" started the gnome-shell but messed up parts of the screen.
Since I'm using fluxbox with no graphical login on my own machine, I really don't know where to start looking. Any clues/suggestions what to look at for fixing the problem?

i had the same issue but with xfce , a full system update fixed it . try doing that without starting 'X'  . Also have you checked logs for any errors.

  • Gnome bug?

Ok, I just installed arch, and after i got my internet i installed gnome, but for some reason i can't shut down or restart in gnome, i have to do it in a terminal. Is this a reported bug? did i do somthing wrong?

try disable the esd deamon, i think maybe ur problem is same as mine...
try not to start the esd, then you can shutdown in gnome.

  • KDE/Gnome interference

Although the problem is there already a long time, only recently it really has started to bug me.
I run a KDE4 desktop environment, but I still heavily depend on GTK and Gnome applications.
I've also grown quite fond of the possibilities of the composite systems.
However there seem to be quite some glitches.
    Examples:
VLC toggles Fullscreen: Flashes of the Gnome wallpaper will appear.
After starting a gnome program, the kmix interface is replaced by the gnome volume images (when using the keys on my keyboard)
When plug in of a new USB-disk both the Gnome system and the KDE pop-ups will appear.
    All these things are accumulating
And I wonder whether there is a way to keep both systems separated?

  • Gnome-shell not run automatically

    hi.
when gnome 3.8 came out, I was using gnome classic (compatibility mode) and the option to switch back to gnome-shell disapeared in gnome tweak tool. So I had no option to switch to gnome-shell. I never mind continue to use metacity and gnome classic in compatibility mode.
Now in 3.10 I don't even get a mouse cursor and font rendering is awfull. So I have to use gnome-shell and not metacity.
How do I do so that gnome-shell is automatically run when I launch a gnome session ??
I have tried to add a gnome-shell.desktop in ~/.config/autostart or add gnome-shell with gnome-session-properties at start. Nothing worked.
At last, I was able to prevent metacity to run at launch by removing metacity.desktop in autostart or removing a session file lying around.
Now, I have to open a terminal and manually run gnome-shell.
    Help.
p.s.: how does gdm launch gnome-shell for you ?

    It works.
What I have done is to remove ~/.config/gnome-sessions/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and replace it with gnome.session
But I got a "ooops something wrong happened" when I tried to login so I think what fixes it was running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session gnome
from a terminal run from a console with startx and gnome-session --session=gnome in ~/.xinitrc
    I got help from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7385192.html
a post from an arch user posting on gentoo forum. WTF !

  • Replacing Motherboard on HP Desktop PC

Considering there are too many issues with the Pegatron IPISB-CU (Carmel2) motherboard on a HP PC that is 4 years old such as my blu-ray drive and dvd drive not working both at once, video card fan died and not going to spend countless of hours trying to find the same replacement for a video card that won't play new games. Also newer cards have new UEFI bios that aren't compatible with the Pegatron board I have and most companies won't do custom BIOS to make the card work with the motherboard. I have thought about replacing the motherboard and try to push it another 2 years. However I have a few questions about this process.
First of all, WILL the Intel Intel Core i5 2400 currently on the HP PC will work with another different board or is it LOCKED to the current motherboard configuration and won't work with any motherboard replacement? How about the memory sticks? I know Intel makes their products to be compatible with their own products and upgrading/replacing with other non approved HP parts won't work with their products.
How will my Windows 7 installation will be affected by the motherboar replacement? Will I have to do custom/clean install of Windows 7 or will I still be able to use the Recovery Suite in the PC for re-installing Windows 7?
I do not plan to upgrade the PSU on the PC because I am shopping for a low power video card (can't afford it.) And I also know that if I upgrade the motherboard I know that I will loose the Wireless/Bluetooth card and the card reader because it has a secondary power intake that I haven't see in any other motherboard configuration.
Or just scrap the system and start from scratch. I just can't believe my luck 900$ down the drain in less than 4 years.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

First, replacing the motherboard that will accept the components is not that difficult, just need to do some searching.  The Windows install will not like the new motherboard, so expect to purchase a new retail copy of your choice.
If you do not plan on a high power video card, then possibly the present PSU will be OK.
I suspect the new motherboard that will accept the present CPU will also accept the memory, as they are usually of the same technology.
The BluRay drive and the DVD, if working, will probably transfer also.  You will/could probably still use the same case and the card reader by keeping the case.  Unkown about the bluetooth card, but typically they use a commonly found PCI slot

  • Beware apple store iPhone replacement program

Beware apple store iPhone replacement program:
We took my daughters broken iphone 4 into an apple store and was told that the damage was not covered under warrany but for only £120 we could get a replacement iphone 4
the problem being when they helped her set  up the replacement Iphone 4 they installed os7 as the opperating system rendering the phone useless as it now runs slow, freezes & cannot use messaging at all etc
we went back to the store hoping they could HELP  &  were told that the iphone should not have these problems & to do a full restore; as it turns out the processing chip cant handle os7 which becomes Very apparent & now the store staff are suggesting that they will upgrade the phone to something newer & give us a £60 discout towards a new phone for something we paid them £120 48hr earlier.
Its not the Apple experience we have all come to love can anyone suggest how we might restore the phone to an earlier opperating system

That's nonsense. I have 2 iPhone fours and both work just fine with iOS 7. As mentioned take ti back.

  • Replace agent for push via console

    Hi!
I want to replace the agent which is beeing pushed via the console. I have SCOM 2012 without SP today. I want to push the R2 agent via the console, as I'm soon upgrading my SCOM, and therefore see it convenient to begin installing the R2-agent, as this works
    with my console.
I guess there is a msi-file within the SCOM-directory in my MS, but so far I haven't been able to find and replace the correct one. Manual install of the R2 agent works fine, and show up within the console with correct version number.
Any help appreciated and a Happy new year:)
    Best regards
    Rune Haugen

    Hi,
If an agent was installed using the push install method, after upgrade the server the agent will be put into a pending update state and can be upgraded through the Console.
Otherwise the agent should be upgraded manually.

  • My New Every 2 disappeared from VZW computers when they were correcting upgrade to replacement

I have been a long time Verizon customer who has had New Every 2 ever since I started about 10 years or so ago. I used to have the old Western States calling plan which I switched to Nationwide 450 min plan 2 years ago when I changed to a Smartphone.
I got my $100 New Every 2 discount fine on that phone. Now I hear it went down to $50. But mine has disappeared from Verizon records (except for notes) apparently as part of their mixup when I replaced the defective smartphone (HTC Touch Pro 2). It was approved about 8 mo into my contract, but I was having trouble deciding what to replace it with (plus I was sick for several months so my brain wasn't into thinking about that). Before the year was up, I called the VZW rep who had agreed to the replacement (it was working but the backlight wouldn't always come on--sometimes I had to keep pressing it multiple times, as well as other issues).  I asked specifically if I had to do the replacement prior to the year being up. He said no, it had been agreed to so I didn't have to actually do it before the end of the year.
So I didn't. That led to multiple problems when I finally did replace it. Every step of the way, VZW was treating it as an upgrade rather than a replacement of the defective device.  They kept wanting to start a new 2 yr contract, etc & I kept telling them, no it was a replacement.  Wasted a lot of my time having to go over that each time I talked to a person. & finally, after i had adamantly refused to agree to a new 2 yr contract they said ok, but then I got a new 2 yr contract.  Ok, another call & they backed that out.
But the upgrade date was Dec 2012 instead of 2011 as it should have been. Another call. Finally they fixed that, but in so doing, rather than restore back to the original contract, they had me on mo to mo starting at the time of the replacement. & somehow in all that, the New Every 2 discount disappeared from the contract.
So I am just now upgrading--just got my new iPhone 4S which I trust will actually be a reliable smart phone for a change--but since the New Every 2 wasn't in the computer but just in the notes, I wasn't given the discount on the price, but she did give me a credit for that amount.
OK, now i'm concerned about next time. Is New Every 2 still available for those who have had it long term?
& how can I get it back in my contract, rather than just in the notes, so next time I don't have to go through all this again?
my previous phone had been a basic flip phone which just worked so I kept it for about 5 yrs before upgrading to the smart phone. I intended to keep it for several years, not expecting to have such defective WinMob phones. The replacement was a downgrade with less features & it has freezes & the alarms (which I count on) don't work well. I know smart phones are more complicated, but still. With 2 yr contracts it would be nice to have devices that actually last & work well for 2 years rather than having to have 2 devices, both of which have had issues during the 2 yr contract.
I trust the iPhone 4S will not only be a very useful & fun phone, but also a reliable one for a change, that I will keep for a while. But I am concerned about the status of New Every 2.
& now, soon I'm off to get my new iPhone 4S set up & activated at the Apple store.

    Thank you!
I actually just got off the phone with Verizon and thoroughly confused the Verizon Rep because he has never had that question asked before! He finally "tested" the new phone's activation status to see if the phone has been activated to my account, and he said it had (even though it is not actually associated with my number), and I can do what I want with the phone- store it, use it, let someone else use it, and not worry about the 30 day policy biting me in the b*tt with a huge charge of the phone's retail price!
Phew! I like it when it doesn't take weeks to get an answer (have had MANY hours on the phone with Verizon regarding diff. issues, and am always worried that problems and questions will take way too much time to answer).

  • Battery Problems - Replacement needed?

    Hi everyone!
I've not posted on this forum before but just thought here would be the best place to come to ask for expertise and opinions!
Okay i'll cut to the chase!
Roughly 18 months ago I purchased a lovely Macbook Pro with the Macbook Pro Applecare too.
In January 2009 I realised that the battery wasn't too good health wise.
Since brand new battery life was roughly 3 and a half hours
Since January 2009 the battery lasted roughly over an hour/hour and a half.
Since May 2009 the battery barely even lasts 30 minutes. (iStat Pro says my battery health is 14%)
As you can tell, I am quite annoyed at this! (details of battery information below as of May 2009)
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 768
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 781
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 267
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -202
    Voltage (mV): 12213
In January I enquired about the battery and would I be able to get a replacement for free due to being covered by the Applecare, but I was told by the man at the Genius Bar that I would have to pay full retail price for a new battery due to batteries not being covered by applecare and the complimentry 1 year warranty was the only thing that covered the battery health.
I read that "Apple claim a battery should retain 80% capacity after 300 cycles" and that getting in touch with customer relations may be a good idea. Can this be applied to my battery information?
Is there anyway I can get my battery replaced by Apple? Or is it a case of paying an obscene amount of money for a new battery which would do the same after 18 months?
Thank you for any help! Additional information if needed will be gladly given!
    Chris.

Well another problem - probably related - has occured!
Hopefully, if I can wangle it a bit, would this be able to get a replacement battery under Applecare?
When I do use my Macbook Pro and it isn't plugged in, even though it barely lasts 15 minutes now the "Reserve battery power" window pops up on screen, even when the battery status indicator (top right of the screen) shows that there is 3/4 of the battery power left 2 or 3 times in 5 odd minute gaps (black too).
Due to this error, and Applecare wanting to solve almost any problems encountered with Macs, would I be able to - if I use craftyness and ingenuity - be able to get a replacement battery?
Is this a good idea or not?
Thanks for any help, and thanks to Kappy for replying!
    Chris
