ESS questions!!

Hello,
I have a few questions I would like to ask you:
1. How can I check my ESS version?
2. I have an ITS based ess, with sap 4.6c and EP6.0 . Is it possible to upgrade to a newer version of ESS?
3. I will only have to implement ESS for Personnel Training. Do you think the effort of upgrading to a newer version of ESS is worth while?

Hi Ricardo,
1. To check your ESS version you can try to find the original PAR files that were deployed and in the Manifest file you should be able to find a version number. Even easier would be to ask whoever installed it or find the original download as the ZIP file name should have the version details included in it.
2. It depends what version of ESS you want to go to. ESS versions align with what backend SAP system you have. If you are on 4.6C I think you options are limited and for example you cannot benefit from the Web Dynpro based ESS packages. In portal content studio you will find all ESS versions and it will list what backend requirements there are for each one.
3. See my answer to number 2. You may not even be able to upgrade without upgrading your SAP HR system. I am not familiar with the Personnel Training parts of ESS so I can't really help with that.

Hi,
My client has ECC 6 and EP 7 in the landscape. I am implementing Employee Self Service portal. It looks like standard Purchasing Requisition and Goods Receipts iviews (ESS package) are pointing to SRM. We are not implementing SRM here. Is there any way I can use these iviews pointing to ECC (probably ME51n, MIGO?)?
Do I have to have SRM in order to use these standard iviews? Is there any standard iviews available for ECC purchase requisition?
If you implement Purchase Requisition using ECC instead of SRM, what is the licensing impact? Client has purchased the license for Employee Procurement Self Service.
Another question is, Is there any standard iview for Travel & Expense approval? I dont find it in MSS.

HI Horny,
Can you use the Following Tables:
S039 - > LETZTABG - Date: last (i.e. most recent) goods issue
EKPO -> EBELN - Purchasing Document Number.
You can create View by using these two tables (Material Number is the Common) and uploade the data.

Unable to retrieve Personnel List items

Hi,
User needs to process payroll. In Time management for Time Entry it shows the following error instead of showing up EBB- approver.
Error message:
+*Unable to retrieve Personnel List items. Please try again later, or if the problem persists,

ESS/MSS Upgrade from 4.6 to ECC 6.0 Question..

Hi Gurus,
During the upgrade SAP R/3 would be upgraded from 4.6C to ECC 6.0. The HR module on this R/3 has - Org Management, Benefits, Time Administration and Payroll. They use ESS based on ITS. My question is when they go from 4.6c to ECC 6.0 - would they have to let go the ITS based ESS transactions and go with Web Dynpro based ESS? If yes then what happens to all the customizations they have done to ITS based ESS transactions. Would they have to be redone on the Web Dynpro based ESS?

yes You need to do different customisations for the Web dynpro since ECC 6 is better with WD, ITS functionality wont work here. Please check the training material for the MSS which is very exhaustive.
But if you continue to use ITS then your old customisation should work but then again there will be changes..better to move wholly to WD

A question about ESS / MSS implementation.

Just a brief again about our landscape as:
1. We have an ERP ECC5.0 system which has J2EE6.40(add-in) without the 'EP' usage type and the present Support package level of the relevant ESS and MSS components are as follows:
a. J2EE6.40 Support Package level is '17'.(We are going to deploy the XSS components here)
b. ERP ECC5.0 system's Software Components details are as follows:

2. We have a separate NW2004s(Dual stack(ABAP7.0+J2EE7.0) installation having EP7.0 with Support Package level is '16'. (We are going to deploy the Business Package for ESS & MSS here).
Here are my questions?
1. what is the best 'Support Package' level recommendation or combination is applicable for all the components(J2EE6.40,SAP_BASIS,SAP_ABA,SAP_APPL,SAP_HR,EA-HR...etc.,) involved in this type of mixed landscape - ESS & MSS implementation?
2. If we apply the higher Support Packages 'only' for the ERP ECC5.0 software components such as: SAP_BASIS,SAP_ABA,SAP_APPL,SAP_HR,EA-HR - what other ERP ECC5.0 software components would get impacted from functionality prespective ?(let us say if we keep the current Support Package level for other software components as untouched)
3. Is there any dependency exist from the Support Package point-of-view between the ESS MSS Business Packages and with XSS components(PCUI_GP; ESS; MSS)
4. Is there any dependency exist from the Support Package point-of-view between XSS components and ERP ECC5.0 software components such as "SAP_BASIS,SAP_ABA,SAP_APPL,SAP_HR,EA-HR"

First you should check note 1007341 which helps consultants proposing this type of landscape
To answer some of your questions
1) For SPs you have to patch ERP 2004 components following ERP 2004 stack and patch
    ERP 2005 components following the ERP2005 stack recommendations at www.service.sap.com/sp-stacks
    in terms of equivalence levels I would select SP levels from each stack with similiar release dates
2) Presumably you will be using ERP2004 components in the front-end in some capacity therefore these
    ERP2004 components must be patched in line with ECC 500 stacks
3) There is dependancies between Business Packages and XSS
4) There is dependancies between back-end components SAP_HR and EA_HR and XSS/BP
    SAP_HR and EA_HR also have their own dependancies with the other back-end components listed

ESS Business Package role authorization question

Hi,
We are going live in a few weeks with the ESS BP in EP7 SP12. All we are planning to use right now are two of the Benefits webdynpro's (Benefits Participation Overview and Enrollment).
My question is this; Do I have to give all users the Employee-Self-Service role or can I simply just add the everyone group to the two benefits webdypro's?
Any insight to this would be greatly appreciated.

best solution would be to create a new role (for example "myESS") and add the two iViews to it. then assign the role to a group that includes all employees (I wouldn't use "Everyone"...). This keeps you the best flexibility and structures your content from the beginning.

Help about ESS/MSS - Deploy error and landscape question

I read a lot of post about this topic, but I continue something confuse about them.
I want to configure ESS and MSS.
My landscape is:
- J2EE 7.0 with Portal 7.0 (2004s) in a server A.
- ECC 5.0 ( with HR component SP05) in a server B.
Server B, has only stack Abap.
Server A is the latest version of Netweaver today. (stack j2ee and stack abap, BI, XI, Portal, etc)
I download and deploy in server A (J2EE 7.0), this components:
- BP ESS for erp2004
- BP MSS for erp2004
When I deploy the ESS BP, the deployment break raising this kind of error with the most of components, for example:

Obviously, for this reason the most of iviews raise errors. A few of these works ok.
I assign role, and others configuration steps, this part I thinks that is OK
I configured the Jco, the role in Portal, the profile in ERP for ESS, etc.
My principal question is:
Can I use Portal 7.0 against ECC 5.0 in order tu use ESS/MSS based on webdynpro, without stack j2ee in ECC server (B) ?
Is necesary install J2ee stack in my server B ? or not?
Where I need to deploy the XSS 500 components ? in the J2EE 7.0 ?
Why when I deploy have this problem and the most of components cant deploy it?

Custom ESS/MSS iview question

Hi all,
The requirement is to create a custom ESS/MSS iview under one of the worksets in portal. For example I am creating a custom Beneifts iview under the Benefits workset.
I have to get the user personnel number to get the corresponding data in the WD application that i am creating. Where do i get this value from?
My assumption: It is stored as a global variable in a different WD component and i have to reuse the component in my new application to get the corresponding variable
I have tried my best to make the question clear. let me know if this needs to be more clear.

There might be some portal events raised when a employee is selected. You should subscribe this event in your custom component and work on.

I have seen this question in other places and all the answers did not quite make sense and were sometimes conflicting.
We have been trying to modify some text labels in an ESS/MSS web dynpro DC. We make the changes in the View properties, save metadata, reload, rebuild, and deploy. The changes are showing in design time, but not runtime. I have seen some postings from people saying to change the *.xlf file, but then I have also seen other documentation from SAP help saying not to change the *.xlf files (b/c they are generated at build time). Also, the generic *.xlf file appears to be changed at build time, but the language specific one (in our case en) is not, which I would guess is why the runtime changes are not showing up. What is the correct solution and process to make these changes appear? Is there an additional step for regenerating a language specific *.xlf?
I also know that you can change these labels via content admin in EP7, but we want to change them at design time.

Some questions relating to ESS Customization

Hi Gurus,
Have a couple of questions regarding ESS Customization. And also to understand ESS better.
1. I am trying to pull out the Additional Personal Info stored in Infotype - 0077 and show it in Portal. For this, I am planning to write a new functinal module/ RFC which would return the infotype values to front end. Is that ok or is there any best practice for doing this?
2. Where is the Home Area Page defined? Is it part of the WebDynpro component or is it stored as a configurable element in the backend? Any directions would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of importing the ESS Components into the track. So, couldnt get to see the code yet.
3. Which transaction can I use to see the various Infotypes' descriptions? And which transaction/ table can I use to see the
infotypes'contents or fields?

ESS Licensing Question

If I develop a custom infotype and expose it in the Employee Self-Services portal, is this covered by the ESS license? Or do I need an SAP license for the employee to access it?

I think Ravi answered for the first question.
Yes it is covered ie there is no additional licensing involved for customizing iviews. You can create as many iviews as your business requires.

I have following questions about say Address Infotype. I am aware that all these listed below are possible. But looking for the correct table names.
1) How do I make fields mandatory in the backend PA30 transaction ?
2) How do I make fields mandatory in the ESS Address Service ?
3) If I have 3 new custom subtypes for address created in the backend, how do I enable the Portal users access these subtypes from the ESS Address service? How do I make these 3 new subtypes available on the Portal ?

2) Open the required iview in portal content administration and preview it. From there choose CTRL+Rightclick mouse button, this will open up WebDynpro administrator personalization. Where in you can personalize every field of that iview/application. Making mandatory is one of them.
3) V_T7XSSPERSUBTYP - in this view, make new entries for custom subtypes. Refer to the standard entries/documentation.

Custom webdynpro question in ess

I have three questions while developing webdynpro for ess.
1. I developed a standard webdynpro with authorization deployed in WAS Java ,its a ear file, now in portal i created a webdynpro iview with page(on hitting preview of iview the applications runs).Now how to put the link in Portal ESS overview page which on clicking the link invokes the iview thereby the developed webdynpro application. I know the pcd location of the iview created.so what is needed to make the keep in with standard ESS applications in portal,what configuration is needed in homepage framework.
2. I developed local webdynpro DC instead of standard webdynpro, used build DC and deployed.what are the steps to make it available in ESS Overview page in portal.
3.I developed a selfservice webdynpro using FPM ,what are the steps to make it available in ESS Overview page in portal.(should be similar to 2nd question)

What you have to do is create an iview for Webdynpro Application which you deployed on the portal ....add it to the workset and the role ....then copy the PCD Location of it and then goto the ECC SPRO -> Cross Application Components -> Home Page Framework -> create a new Resource and specify the PCD Location in the URL of the PCD Column of it ...then create a Service ...assign the resorce created for it ...and then finally add the Service to the SubArea you want and it will show in the portal under that SubArea like Personaol Information or others....
