ESS System creation required or not

Question

Hi All,
For ESS Configuration(XSS 600 sp13, ESS_BP1.0) in portal 7.0 , does the creation of system (SAP_WebDynpro_XSS )from system administration->system configuration  is required or not? Portal,XSS,ESS_BP all are on same J2EE Stack, I am asking this because in the ess iview i didnot found the system propery which used to be there with value "SAP_WebDynpro_XSS " for earlier versions.Now I am not seeing the system property, so how does the iview is identifying where the webdynpro applications are running.
    One more question on the execution flow of ess, when we click ESS tab in portal, the iview overviewpage launches the XSSMenu webdynpro application and the result is building the ess overview page in portal by reading the homepage framework from backend,from next time when we click specific service from ess overviewpage for example address application, then whats happening does it reading the img config again or it has in memory from the first call and knows which iview it has to invoke and which webdynpro application.

In other words what are the process steps taking place
1) on clicking the ESS tab in portal displays overviewpage in portal with areas,subareas,services.
2)on clicking service link ilike address in portal ess overviewpage displays address application in iview in a page.
On the above two steps can you tell the interaction between nw04s portal7.0 and backend ECC6.0
I think for first step the overview iview calls the webdynpro XSSMenu application with parameters which generates overviewpage in portal by reading hompage configuration.
what about second step on clicking the service link of address application does it reads the homepage configuration again or uses from session which it got from first step and the address iview launches address webdynpro application?
