Essbase 5.02p13a to 6.5 or 6.2.1 - All comments welcome..

We are currently running Essbase 5.02p13a on UNIX and are looking to upgrade to either 6.2.1 or 6.5. Any comments regarding these versions, upgrading to these version are very welcome. Is anyone on 6.5? Is it stable?

We are currently migrating from 5.0.2p13 to 6.5.0. It's HP-UX 11.0 here. Big performance improvements thanks to parallelization of both loads and calculates (60% less time) but requires more RAM (up to 50%). A lot better than any earlier 6.x on this platform. Beware, once migrated no way to go back unless rebuilding from scratch so double-check your backups.Have fun,Alex

Planning Security Filters not reflecting in Essbase filters for 2 of 4 cube

We are using Hyperion Planning with essbase. In essbase we have 4 cubes in essbase (BSCF, EMP, IS, MGN). We would like to add security for the entity dimension as we don't use it currently but we do for other dimensions.
I have created a new group (FIN_APAC) in SS so that restricted access be given to users in Asia for only their LE(s). Then I enabled security for the LE dimension in planning and set security filters through a command line load. For existing groups I gave write access to all LE members and for the new group (FIN_APAC) I gave write access to certain members.
When I refresh the security filters in planning they should reflect in Essbase and it does for 2 cubes (BSCF & EMP) but for the other cubes (IS & MGN) the essbase security filters are NONE! In planning all the LE members are set to be included in all plan types.
The main problem seems to be with this new group (CSR_FIN_APAC) as whenever this group is assigned the essbase filters are not assigned properly. For the existing groups that have added LE security for all members the security filters are updated for 4 cubes as expected.

When you create a planning application we can create 3 essbase cubes as plan types. if you use Capex, Workforce you can able to create max of 5 databases in Essbase version 11.1.1.3.
if it is 11.1.2 you can add one more cube
In your question, have you created 4 Essbase cubes. can you explain how that is possible.
if all the LE members in all plan types means in 3 Essbase cubes. when you refresh security from planning to essbase that works fine.
Can you explain the situation perfectly so that can able to give ans.

Loading Errors-Essbase

Hi all,
Please help me with this..
I got the following errors while load is running in essbase, I have seen this in log files..
All other cubes loaded successfully, except 1 cube.
ERROR 1054004 - Application is not loaded
ERROR - 1002097 - Unable to load database
The Oracle website shows
Possible solution for 1st error is Make sure that you created the filters correctly.
2nd error is not mentioned there.
Please help me solving this issue.

Hi,
First of all can you start this database from say EAS, does it say it cannot start?
It might be a hung esssvr.exe process, stop all the databases and if you still see an esssvr.exe process running you may need to end that process unless you can stop it with maxl or esscmd.
If you are unsure how to do it then it might be easier to give the box a reboot.

How can I migrate an Essbase Appl. from one machine to another?

We uses 3 computers to cover our development cycle: one for developing, one for testing with almost real data (integration test) and a production machine.I created a new Essbase appl. and want to transfer it from one machine to another, but only using batch scripts (ESSCMD) due to company policy. I don't know where the name of the application is stored. (I thought it is essbase.sec, but I believe is not true)I transfer all the files that belongs to an appl. (the list of them I get using BEGINARCHIVE) but is not enough.Does anyone have a hint?

If you can map a drive to each to the servers, then:1. Create an application/database on the new server with the same names as those on the old server.2. Use Windows/DOS, copy the outline (.otl), calc scripts (.csc) and load rules (.rul) to the new server.3. Export the database from the old server to a file(s) on the new server.4. Stop/start the new database/app.5. Import the data into the new server (no load rule needed).

Data Load behaviour in Essbase

Hello all-
I am loading data from Flat File using a server Rule File. In the rule file i have properties for a feild where in it replaces a name in flat file for member name in outline so it is somwhat like this:
Replace With
Canada 00-200-SE
Belgium 00-300- SE
and so on
Now in my flat file there was a new member for example china & the replacement for it was not present in Rule File & when the data was loaded in the system it didnt rejected that record on the contrary it loaded the values for china in
the region which was above it and overwrited the values for the original one.
Is this the normal behavior of essbase , I was thinking that record should have been rejected .
I know when we do a Lock & Send via Addin & if member is not present in outline it give you warning when you lock that sheet & eventually if you dont delete that member from the template it will load data against it in the member above it.
Is there a waok around for this problem or this is what it is ?
I am on Hyperion Planning / Essbase Version 9.3.1.

Still thinking how does these properties effects the way data is being loaded right now. Have gone through DBAG & i dont see a reason y any of these peoperties might be affecting the load^^^Here's what I think is happening: China is not getting mapped, but the replacement for Belgium is occuring and resolves to a valid member name. Essbase sees China and doesn't recognize it (you knew all of this already).
When the load occurs, Essbase says (okay, I am anthromorphizing, but you get the ida) "Eh, I have no idea what China is, but 00-300-SE is the last good Country member I have, I will load there." Essbase is picking the last valid member and loading to that. I liken it to a lock and send from Excel with nested dimensions and non-repeating members. Essbase "looks up" a row, finds the valid member, and loads there.

Search for "Unknown Member Fields" -- it's all the way at the bottom of the above link.
In fact, to save you the trip, per the DBAG:
If you are performing a data load and Essbase encounters an unknown member name, Essbase rejects the entire record. If there is a prior record with a member name for the missing member field, Essbase continues to the next record. If there is no prior record, the data load stops. Regards,

Essbase members not picking up data values

Gurus,
I have some members in my JOB CODE hierarchies, such as 100, 200, 300 ETC.
Now I have added 100A, 200A, etc to the hierarchy. 100A is the sibling of 100, 200A is the sibling of 200, so forth.
Now, 100A, 200A, etc (the ones with the alphabet A is not picking up the values/percentages, while doing a pushdown.
Is it because of the ALPHANUMERIC member names?
Essbase allows such names right? or Do I need to change any setting/properties, etc like that?

the answer is it depends. It is not Essbase itself that would not allow those member names as all member names are really text even if they look numeric. The problem could be in your script to "Push down" data. it could be doing some match based on UDA or member format. without seeing the pushdown script, I can't determine what could be your issue. It could even be a block creation issue, but who knows.

Synchronize MSAD and essbase groups and users automatic

I know it is not possible to import to Essbase users and groups directly from MSAD or LDAP. All users are deffined with external authentication. There is a way to create an application which make this synchronization possible ? May I have some samples? Thanks. 

If you are using LCM and groups are native and users are external provisioned against the groups then you will need to export the groups, if you want the provisioning against applications then you will also need to take that across.

Essbase security Migration from native mode to external authentication

Hi!!
I want some guidance on setting up security, all the users are currently in Native user mode and Native groups.
Now we want to migrate to external mode, current version of hyperion is 11.1.1.3, any steps to follow in
this direction would be really helpful.
What is the best way of migrating huge user base from native directory to setting up for external authentication,
this is the first time move from native to external authentication, If anyone who has done this will be helpful.
steps to setup , maxl based migration will be helpful or utility based.

When you say native mode do you mean that that essbase security is in native mode and you want to convert to shared services security mode,or do you mean you are using shared services securtiy with native users and you want to use an external directory like MSAD.

Yes the first piece is correct, our security is in native mode.
and we want to convert to shared services security mode,
The request involves moving from essbase native mode to Shared services native user mode (moving all the existing users, groups and existing provisioning)
The next stage is moving from Shared services native user mode to external directory. (moving all the existing users, groups and existing provisioning)
Your input will guide me in the direction.

Install Essbase App on SAN (v11.1.2)

Has anyone installed the entire Essbase application on a Storage Area Network (SAN) drive in Windows environment? If so, what has been your experience? Faster / slower performance? Any risks should the SAN configuration change on the back end?
In the past, Essbase was always installed on a local D:\ drive and the E:\ drive was used for page and index files.
Current setup
1) C:\ Operating system
2) D:\ Essbase application (essbase.exe, etc) and other non-Essbase apps on a local drive
3) E:\ Essbase page and index files on a SAN
Proposed setup
1) C:\ Operating system
2) D:\ Other non-Essbase applications on a local drive
3) E:\ Essbase application (essbase.exe, including page and index files) on a SAN
Any comments are appreciated.

Best way to keep Essbase data available at all time

Hi all,
We are trying to find out the most suitable way of designing our Essbase cubes so that the data is available to user all the time even during data replication and aggregation.
We may have aggregate the cubes every one hour and cubes will both ASO and BSO.
Can someone give some direction on this? Can we use trickle feed for ASO and or clustering is a better option? Also what kind of clustering will be best suited for this?
Any other tip wlll be really helpful.

U do not need aggreate ASO
becouse all agregates calc automaticaly with user retrive process . But u may have to use material view for store most popular report on storage.

1) What you decision - Budgeting or only Reporting
2) How many interactive concurent users
3) How many members in mesures, count of dimensions, count members in dimensions,levels in dimensions

EPMA Essbase vs. Classic Essbase | Best practice question

Dear all,
With no formal training on the topic of EPMA but with the experience of using it together with Planning, I'm aware that deployment in EPMA is destructive for any content created manually in the Essbase application under it.
e.g. when doing a full deployment all manually added calculation scripts will be erased.
I have following questions about the Essbase EPMA applications:
Is Essbase deployment similar destructive as with EPMA Planning?
Must all application content also reside in both EPMA and calculation manager? Is it possible to only use EPMA to control master data and do all other actions in Essbase?
I see a real added value of using EPMA for a client of mine but if I (fear that I) might need to tell them to migrate all their scripts from Essbase administration console to Calculation manager. As such, it will be hard to find the added value of the switch for them.
What about Essbase studio? I'm not aware of any need for Essbase studio in the context of a Planning EPMA implementation, but what about Essbase EPMA? Is this a must-do, adviced or just nice to have?

It depends what you mean by destructive, if you mean does it suffer from the same sort of problems then yes, personally I find it difficult to understand the benefits of moving away from a classic way of maintaining essbase applications to an EPMA managed world, just my opinion.
You should be able to see use calc scripts in the same way as before and the same goes for other functionality.
Essbase Studio is required as EPMA uses some of the codeline to deploy the applications to Essbase.

Does essbase studio support Parent/Child build method

I am trying to build essbase outline from Essbase studio where my source data is in Parent child format. Dimension hierarchies are not built correctly with this build method.. all members are appearing as siblings... could you please confirm if essbase studio does support Parent Child build method... so that i can try to fix the bugs at source if there are any. Thank you very much for your help. I have now built essbase outline with recursive hierarchies.
I have total 11 dimensions and 1 fact table. During the cube schema built, chosen fact table column 'Amount' into measures/measure, 11 hierarchies into hierarchy section... and one dimension as "Account" dim from the 11 dims. The data load is failing with the below error:
Failed to deploy Essbase cube.
Caused by: Failed to load data into database: CurrrASO.
Caused by: Cannot get async process state. Essbase Error(1003007): Data Value [8.23326e+007] Encountered Before All Dimensions Selected, [1] Records Completed
The native sql issued by Studio does not contain the dimension column which is designated as Account dim. I have used custom sql (included one column from each of the 11 dims) but here the data value is also treated as member name and all the records are rejected.

Essbase - Shared services security , User provison

Hi,
I am new to 11.1.1.2 Hyperion version.(worked on 9.3.1) I have some doubts on the user security in 11 version.
We have Distribution environment setup like Essbase on linux and remainng applications on windows 2003 server. Essbase is also registerd with shared services. Here are my questions.
1. If I change the Shared services Admin password (default password) will it effects any other applications?
*2. How to change essbase admin password (default password)?(from foreground we can change first time only)*
3. I am trying to login into EAS as well as essbase admin user but under essbase I am not able to create New User. The Create users option on security is disabled seems like already externalised. I am not able to get those users who are created in shared services evnthought using Refresh from Shared servcies+ option in essbase.
4. If I want to a user with only essbase applicatons provisioned what is the procedure.
Here i followed the procedure. Created xyz user in shared services and provisioned Only Demo applications. trying to loing EAS with xyz credentials login successfull and prompted for essbase credentials with server name , username (Extername authentication) getting failed. If i provide admin password at essbase server leverl i am able to connect and see all applications.
Please help me on this...

I know there have been a number of security issues being addressed since the base version.
e.g.
Security. Users are not de-provisioned properly, causing Essbase applications to remain accessible to

Is it possibole to implement mutiple layer hierarchies in Essbase?

Hi experts,
I want to know whether the following layout is implemented. How to create different layer hierarchies in ESSBASE?
If it does work , I want to drag this hierarchy into presentation. Please help me as soon as possible. Thanks.

Well, I have to say that I do not really not OBIE so I can not make a good comparaison.
What I could say is that in Essbase we use to have multiple dimension that we cross all the time
Therefore in your exemple I would have 2 dimension, one called Entity :
Total
----Location
--------Region1
------------District1
------------District2
--------Region2
------------District3
------------District4
An other called Product:
-Product
-----Brand
---------Product Type
-------------Product 1
Then you "cross" the two dimension like:
Product Type
Product1 | Product 2 | Prodcut 3 ...

Distric2 110 220 250
