We recently migrated to Essbase 6.1 patch on Sun Solaris 2.8. The calc times have nearly doubled for all applications. Did any organization with same configuration had similar problems? How was it resolved

We tested configuration of Essbase and AlphaBlox on Solaris 6 and NT. We found that Essbase was slower on Solaris. We currently run Essbase on an NT box and the Web Reporting App on Solaris.

Databases that Crystal Reports 9 can function with

Hi,
We are going to purchase Crystal Reports for the use with a new financial program that we will be purchasing. The financial program that we will purchase allows report customization within the program if using the Crystal Reports 9 engine. For that reason we are going to purchase Crystal Reports 9. Otherwise we would have to create custom reports outside of this program if using a more recent version of Crystal like 2008.
However we need to make sure Crystal Reports will work with our SQL Server 2005 database. I tried to research a bit on Crystal Reports 9 (of which currently I know nothing about) and came across this document when doing a search https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/202ff507-281f-2b10-78b6-b6bce2668d6b.
We also need Crystal 9.0 to work with Paradox and BDE databases. It looks like BDE 5.1 and Paradox 8 & 9 are listed as supported platforms. I also see SQL Server 2000 but do not see SQL Server 2005. Will Crystal Reports 9.0 work with a SQL Server 2005 database and also what are the plans for Crystal Reports 9.0 working with future versions of SQL like 2008?

Not memory consumed, no swap file usage

We have a 4 processor Windows 2000 server with 4 gig of Ram.While running a data load and calc process against one database in Essbase that pegs the cpu at 2 gig, the Essbase server info window shows no memory being used and no swap file space being used....Why? Essbase has configurable parameters that control RAM usage - specifically:The Index CacheThe Data CacheThe Data File CacheThe Calc CacheThese settings will have an effect on what memory Essbase uses during a calc. Did you ever noticed that members that are dynamic calc in a sparse dimension are considered stored members when you look at database statistics ?I wonder why ... ???Why would dynamic calc members in sparse dimension be considered stored member when the same members in a dense dimension are not.Example :Dimension X is dense. It has 10 members, 5 of which are dynamic calc. In database statistics, you will see the following:Dimension Type : DenseMembers in dim : 10Members stored : 5For argument sake, use the same dimension but set it to sparse. It could be a bug - or just the way the value is calculated. For example - if you tag members of sparse dimensions as dynamic calc, the POTENTIAL number of blocks stays the same. I would argue that it should decrease, since you will never have blocks stored for members that are dynamic.However, if you have data in your database, the number of EXISTING blocks does decrease, which is expected.Now, the other possibility is that Essbase calculates blocks according to their block number. Even though a sparse member may be dynamic, Essbase may still track the block number for this "dynamic" block in case it is required for a rollup or other calculation. The "storage" of the sparse member is merely to assign the sparse combination a block number.That is my best guess (aside from a bug)... I couldn't find an explaination in the DBA guide. ERROR - 1241101

I can't find the error-1241101 from the Essbase error messages,who can tell me why cause the error? And I find the error don't affect me to import the dimension correctly----import database 'db'.'DepByDay' dimensions connect as 'dbo' identified by 'dbo' using server rules_file 'BRA' on error write to 'BRA.err'; ERROR - 1241101 - Unexpected Essbase error 1030001.-----

This is a bug when updating dimensions via SQL interface and MaxL. If you test the same using Esscmd, you do not get any error message.Here is the answer I got from Hyperion Support:For your reference, the same issue has been reported in Defect#172820. It has the same problem descriptions and error message. This issue is fixed in Essbase 6.5 patch 6. Essbase 6.5.6 is expected to be released in July.Hope that this helps.

Unexpected Cell Formatting

Hi,
SV v11.1.2.103 with Essbase and APS patched as required.
Having constructed a drill through report in Studio and then removing it as it interfered with the DTS function, SV is still formatting cells as if the drill through report is available.
I was wondering if anyone happened to know where the cell formatting definitions might be held? If it is possible.

Text shrinking when viewing or exporting report

Hi guys,
I am developing a crystal report in VS2008 with CR10, using the design environment within visual studio. I have a strange problem where my report looks fine when in the crystal report designer but as soon as i run it through the crystal report viewer or export it, the text seems to shrink. I have a text box that spans from the left margin to the right margin and is multiple lines, when exporting it goes about 25% smaller... if i put a line on the page the line spans the length correctly, so seems to just be text boxes. I've tried setting page size and margins and setting the printer to 'No Printer' but nothing seems to work.
any ideas appreciated

please post in detail:
Are you using VS 2008 with full CR 10(File version 10.0.9500.0) ?
or
Are you using CR 2008 with embedded designer (File version 12.0.1100.683)?
The first version would not be supported as CR 10 was never tested for VS 2008.
In this case please update to CR XI R2 or CR 2008 to work on supported and tested environements.

HELP - Partition Error Unable to open file (c:\TEMP\ESS00001.tmp)

While tryint to create a partion that we have in 5.02p14 to 6.2.1, I receive the error during validation. any ideas?Unable to open file (c:\temp\ess00001.tmp).When I go to c:\temp directory, I can see the files but they are empty.Please Help.Thanks, Paul J.

we've gotten this message in essbase 5.02 patch 13 when updating the partitions if there was an error when saving. i think it happens because essbase only partially updated the partition definition file so when you try to save it again, it looks for the temp file. the best way i found to fix this is to delete the .ddb (not .dbb) file from both source and target databases. this will delete any partition you already have existing on the database though.

Security file corruption

It simply mean that Essbase can't readthe security file (essbase.sec).Do you remember what you did afterrestoring it (copying essbase.bak toessbase.sec).One thing I know is that 5.0.2 cannot handle very large (>18.000) numbersof users (this was fixed somewhere in 6.X). So if you register large numberof users (or filters, etc that is recorded on security files), the nexttime you restarted Essbase, you mightget this error.

I did run into a similar error when doing retrievals on dynamically calculated members in essbase, this recursion error. IF it is the same error, it was a bug in essbase 6.1 patch 3a, not sure if it was solely limited to that version or not. The solution was to upgrade to 6.2.1 where the bug was fixed.

i want to apply patch for Essbase 11.1.2.2 now can i do that ?. is there any sequence ,because i had applied patchs for shared services, workspace,planning and FDM earlier thats why - ?

i got success message in command prompt when i applied patch for FDM , but once i open webclient and workbech client in help i am not able to find .300 new patch i applied for FDM
where can we check it -?

You can patch Essbase in any sequence, it will say in the readme if there are prereqs

Is Oracle Identity Management 11g Patch Set 5 (11.1.1.6.0) reqd for Essbase

In the Media pack Readme for parts required to be downloaded for different EPM products, Essbase has Oracle Identity Management 11g Patch Set 5 (11.1.1.6.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) listed. Can someone please tell me if this is a must have. If not under what conditions does one need to have this?

It is not a must have, if you don't know what OIM is then you probably dont need it :)

Essbase Patch Set Update 11.1.2.4.001

Hello,
I'm doing an install of EPM suite 11.1.2.4. There is a PSU for essbase out from couple of weeks ago. I have couple of concerns:
What the difference between downloading from edelivery.oracle.com vs downloading from Hyperion Performance Management and BI Downloads
Would the files be updated already with psu or would I still apply it separately?

There shouldn't be much difference but you should really stick with edelivery as everything is supported through that route and Oracle Support for patches
The patches will not be applied as they will be base releases so you will need to patch.

Essbase doesnt start after DST patch

Dear Friends - We are using Essbase server version 7.1.5. Recently we applied the DST (Daylight saving) patch on our Essbase server and operating system (Unix AIX) and after that we are unable to start Essbase on our servers. The message it gives is "The Essbase license is already in use, or the license file does not contain a valid server type. Please make sure the license is available or please contact Technical Support to validate your license file. " We tried using new license file without any help. Could anyone please help us on this. 

Hi Bill, Thanks for your response. We use the license file directly in our Essbase servers instead of using license server. We have the path of the license file in the essbase.cfg file. After the DST patch was applied by our system administrators, we attempted to start the Essbase using the custom startup scrript we have (one which we use to start Essbase). The script does the following : 1. runs the .profile 2. export ARBORPATH and LIBPATH 3. start Essbase with the 'ESSBASE' command in background mode. We found that Essbase is not starting and the log gave us the message mentioned in our topic. Could you give us any clues what might have happened. Thank you once again. Regards -

Which patch is stable in Essbase 6.2

As far as I know, the only patch available for 6.2 is 6.2.1. We have been running Essbase 6.2.1 on a Windows2000 server since 3/24/2002 without any major problems.
