Essbase beginner's track at KScope

While it is not my intention to spam this board with Kscope informaion, I wanted to inform all of what I think is exciting news. At KScope 12 (June 24th 28th, 2012) we will have a track dedicated to Essbase beginners. subjects like
Cube design considerations
Dimension building and data load basics
Calculation basics
reporting basics
tool selection and much more.
Why am I mentioning all this now? For two reasons.
1. So people can consider attending and make plans
2. MORE IMPORTANTLY If you think there is a topic that shouls be covered you can let us know or if you want to present it, to encourge you to submit an abstract. The deadline for abstracts is Friday.
If you are chosen to present, your conference fee is comped.
Submit your abstract to https://caat.odtug.com/odtug_caat/caat_abstracts_upd.main?conference_id=90 or go to
If you do not want to submit for the beginner's track, use the same link to submit for any of the other tracks
www.kscope12.com to learn more

To add to Glenn's post, If presenting seems like a daunting task, here are a few guidelines to make the process much easier:
Here are some ways to make your abstract stand out:
1.     Be Clear and Concise – Clearly explain in the abstract what the attendee will learn by attending your session. What questions will be answered? Spell it out. Don’t mention the presenter’s name in the abstract or your company’s name. Make your abstract interesting, after all, if your session is accepted, your abstract is what will bring people in to see you speak.
2.     Pick and Choose – Put a fresh spin on an old problem or offer cutting edge advice? Do both. Submit multiple abstracts for your greatest chance of submission. You are limited to four abstracts, so make your selections carefully. Kscope is where people go to see sessions they can’t see anywhere else, so tailor your presentations to this audience.
3.     Toot Your Own Horn – In the biography portion, tell us what makes you a technological expert and an expert speaker. This plays a large part in the selection process.
4.     And of course, Double-check Your Work – Spell check, make sure there are no factual errors, make sure your abstract is high on educational detail while avoiding all marketing speak.

Robb Salzmann

Did you ever noticed that members that are dynamic calc in a sparse dimension are considered stored members when you look at database statistics ?I wonder why ... ???Why would dynamic calc members in sparse dimension be considered stored member when the same members in a dense dimension are not.Example :Dimension X is dense. It has 10 members, 5 of which are dynamic calc. In database statistics, you will see the following:Dimension Type : DenseMembers in dim : 10Members stored : 5For argument sake, use the same dimension but set it to sparse. In database statistics, you will see the following:Dimension Type : SparseMembers in dim : 10Members stored : 10Anyone else seen this or is this a possible bug or our server ???We are using Essbase 6.1 patch 2 on Sun Solaris 5.8.We also have Essbase 6.1 patch 3A on a development server also running on Sun Solaris 5.8. Both server shows the same statistics.Thomas

It could be a bug - or just the way the value is calculated. For example - if you tag members of sparse dimensions as dynamic calc, the POTENTIAL number of blocks stays the same. I would argue that it should decrease, since you will never have blocks stored for members that are dynamic. However, if you have data in your database, the number of EXISTING blocks does decrease, which is expected. Now, the other possibility is that Essbase calculates blocks according to their block number. Even though a sparse member may be dynamic, Essbase may still track the block number for this "dynamic" block in case it is required for a rollup or other calculation. The "storage" of the sparse member is merely to assign the sparse combination a block number. That is my best guess (aside from a bug)... I couldn't find an explaination in the DBA guide. • Query logging?

    Hi,
A customer of mine picked up this in the essbase log
Missing Database Config File [C:\Hyperion\AnalyticServices\APP\<app name>\OHead\OHead.cfg], Query logging disabled
The essbase app is used for planning.
I cannot find the file concerned. The other databases do not have a config file.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Nathan

You will only have a query loggin cfg file if you set one up. It is related to the query logging capability.
    From the DBAG
    Implementing Query Logs
Query logging provides a way for Essbase administrators to track query patterns of an Essbase database. The query log file tracks all queries performed against the database regardless of whether the query originated from Spreadsheet Add-in or Report Writer. Query logging can track members, generation or level numbers of members belonging to specific generations or levels, and Hybrid Analysis members. Query logging also offers the flexibility to exclude logging of certain dimensions and members belonging to generations or levels. Because the query log file output is an XML document, you can import the log file to any XML-enabled tool to view the log. For details about the query log file structure, refer to querylog.dtd in the ARBORPATH/bin directory.
To enable query logging, create a query configuration file (distinct from the essbase.cfg file) and add to the file the configuration settings that control how query logging is performed.
In the ARBORPATH\App\appname\dbname directory of Essbase, create a query log configuration file. The configuration file must be named dbname.cfg, where dbname matches the name of the database. For example, the query log configuration file for Sample Basic is basic.cfg. The output query log file is located at, by default, ARBORPATH\App\appname\dbname00001.qlg.
For more information about query logging and how to set up the query log configuration file, see the Technical Reference.

  • Attributes Dimension

I am having trouble understanding Attributes dimension. Can someone give a clear example and explain this concept to me? Also tell me how to view the Attributes in the Excel add-in.You can respond here or email me directly at [email protected] Lal

The best way to explain attributes are to go by example. Say you have an essbase database that tracks sales of products over time. So you have a Time dimension, a Measures dimension and a Product dimension.A requirement comes along where the business needs to analyze product profitability by package size - the size of the container each product is shipped in. In older versions of Essbase, there were 2 ways to do this:1) New dimension for package type2) Shared rollups in the product dimensionThese approaches work, but they add size and complexity to the database, which increases calc time. Also, the shared rollup idea starts to get cumbersome when you introduce more things - say product color. Now you have products shipped in different packages and in different colors. You can still create shared rollups for the colors, but now the business wants to compare sales of a package/color combination with a different package/color combination. You need even more shared rollups for the comparisons.Adding a new dimension creates all of the possible combinations of product, package type and color, but if you assume that these new properties are product specific, it adds sparsity to the database. In Essbase 6, you can create an attribute dimension - it looks sort of like a real dimension, but it works by piggybacking an existing dimension. You attach package type and color tags to each product, and you can then use the attribute dimensions to slice and dice the data as you would with real dimensions.By default, Essbase will sum all of the like attributes together to give you a total - sales for all red products for example. However, you can choose from Sum, Count, Min, Max and Average, all applied dynamically.Attribute dimensions do not show up in a default Excel retrieval. You can add them to the sheet by typing them into a cell manually or using Member Select. You can then use them as you would normal dimensions.Hope that helps a bit.Regards,Jade----------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • Basic question about tracking for beginner

Ok, heres the thing. I want to record multiple tracks at seperate times from the same mic in the same input, but when I go to record a second track and put that the input is track one, it will only let me record on all tracks that I have used this input for. Please help, Jeff

    Hi J,
I believe is this what you need,
You just record track 1 (see channel strip on left - I/O> input 1)
when you choose track 2 (the I/O is on input 2) press and hold that button that says input 2 and change it to input 1!
    (tracks 3 , 5, & 7 must be on input 1 ither)
    best regards,

  • Going to Previous Tracks- Help for beginner

Due to the length of my project and the need for chapter markers, instead of making one long track with over 100 markers, I've created 20 tracks with six or more markers per track. My problem is, if I am on Track 6-Ch. 1, I want to press the back button on my remote to go back to Track 5- Ch. 5. I'm sure there's an easy solution that I'm missing, but I've been missing it for awhile now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why not make one track? I don't understand why you would rather make 20 tracks with six markers... can you offer more details?
Why don't you just drag all 20 video clips into the one Track (timeline)? Then it's all the same timeline in the same track and all yer chapter markers will work backward and forward.
This would be way easier than getting into stories and or scripting.
If I'm misunderstanding what you are attempting to achieve, I apologize, let me know.
    Cheers!

  • User Tracking in Essbase 11.1.2.2

My client requires the follwing information from Essbase. I can get the below information when i expand my security and click on display user table. however is there any maxl command which would give the below information in 11.1.2.2 when i say "display user all" it does not provide all the information. Kindly help me.
    ServerName
    SystemName
    ActiveFlag
    LoginName
    Name
    LoginStatus
    EmailAddress
    ExpiratonDate
    LastLoginDate
    AdditionalInfo
    Regards,
    AS

I have written stuff using the API to get that info, as like you, I found that maxl fell short. The old ESSCMD "GETUSERINFO" (which still works in 9.3.1) provides more or less the info you listed
    User Name
    Description
    Email
    Locked out (yes/no)
    Change the password now (yes/no)
    Access Level
    Password expiration in days
    Last successful login
    failed login attempts since then
    login id
    However that command requires a username e.g. GETUSERINFO testuser;
The gurus on here will probably know for sure if there is a command out there.

  • Beginner question: Two audio tracks become one - how to undo?

I know this surely is a beginners' problem, i hope for a quick reply anyway. I've imported material I had before logged with AVID Liquid, into Premiere CS4. In order to get video and audio together I had to put video and audio in a new sequence by hand. I then loaded this seqeunce into the source monitor to be able to cut my material (one video track, two audio tracks (one from a directional mic, which I don't always want))  from there. But when I paste a clip in my editing sequence I only get video plus ONE audio track in the stereo track. But I need both audio tracks because sometimes I'm going to delete one of them. So my question: How do I get video and BOTH audio tracks from one sequence to the other?
Thank you very much, you've had much patience with me with similiar questions.
    Niklas

To do what you want, you won't be able to work with the media as a single clip.  You'd have to go into the sequence with the video and two audio tracks, and pick out what you want from there instead of the Source monitor.  Make your cuts, laso the clips you're using, then do a Cut/Paste from the main sequence into the edit sequence.  Make sense?

  • Hello, I'm a beginner and I want to know how to record let's say a vocal track, without recording the rest of the music on it ?

I have imported several wav tracks into a project in Audition. Now, I'm trying to record a vocal track directly in the program, but it also records all the rest of the music on that vocal track... What am I doing wrong ?
    thanks,

  • Beginner here - build to FLASH - video tracks missing sound?

OK...was reading some other forum entries on audio problems...way over my head...here goes my problem:
I can see it all working perfectly (including all sound) under Encore's preview all the sound for the videos are there...sound for Main Menu...sound for Secondary Menu...sound for slide show...sound for videos...I did a ULTRA build...
After doing a Flash build...which looked like it completed normally...I brought the .html file up...all the functionality works EXCEPT...no sound for the video clips.
Any ideas why? If you have an answer please dummie it down for me!
    Thanks, --bill

    David,
My hat is off to you for persevering with Encore 3 and getting it to output flash video. AFter reading that you had gotten it to work, I was inspired to try once again. This time I encoded my timeline to DVCPro HD by exporting the FCP project to Compressor. I then took this timeline (an 11 minute video) into Encore 3 and tried to build a flash DVD. I have a main menu and scene selection menu, and they both transcoded fine in about 20 minutes, but once again when Encore got to my timeline, the progress bar moved to about 1-2% and simply stayed there. After 7 hours I finally gave up and canceled the transcode which had never progressed any further and did a Force Quit on Encore.
I noticed in doing the above, that during the transcode of the menus Activity Monitor shows my cpu is reading 170-190 and varying as you would expect. Once Encore hits my timeline and begins the transcode of that, the cpu drops to 100 and remains there with no real sign of activity.
Can you tell me if your DVD that you successfully output to flash with Encore 3 had chapter marks in it? I am wondering if they could be the trouble. Some people have indicated that they solved the problem by going back to an earlier version of Quicktime. I am using version 7.5 of Quicktime, which is the latest version. Can you tell me what version of Quicktime you are using on the Mac that succeeded in outputting to Flash video using Encore 3?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • KSCOPE

    Gentlemen,
Hope u guys don't mind this approach but i thought regarding ODTUG kscope i can get best answers from this forum :)
After long battle with my manager he allowed me to attend ODTUG Kscope11 but would like to ask what all i can attend from this and how much it cost around could any1 help me in this so that i can sort with my manager and make the Early bird payment
I see series of presentation which comes close to 100 presentation on Hyperion and some trainings scheduled on same time on Hyperion products by different personalities please give some suggestion which is the one i need to or all of them
,(by nature iam a Hyperion developer)
    cheers

Congrats on being able to attend Kscope11, it is a wise choice from your manager. As others have said, it all depends on what you want to get out of it. Are you looking to learn new product, gain tips and tricks about what you currently do, or get hands on experience?
The selection of presentations is so vast, it is hard to narrow it down. First, ask yourself, what is your area of expertise and what do you want to get out of the conference? I wold first look at the hands on labs, these are half day sessions with you working though specific products to get a good intro to them. They are filling up fast with them being at 60% capacity already. Signups are on a first come first served basis so the earlier you sign up, the better selection.
As for sessions, there is an enduser track that is more case study-ish, As a developer, I would stay away from those, but there are tons of presentations on HFM, Essbase, Planning, etc that are developer oriented. I would HIGHLY advase getting there for the Sunday symposium with the Oracle product managers who go through what is comming up and the ask the developer panel (I think on Monday). In your little free time, visit with oracle at the kiosks to look at products you are not familiar with and visit the Oracle support room, to get questions answeres (Both new this year). If you don't want to sleep, you can join the Midnight madness on Monday (really 10:00) for some bonding with your Hyperion brethren and if you really don't want to sleep, join the late night Werewolf games.
Plan to leave the conference with your head spinning with new ideas and your body tired but energized with all that you have done.
If you give more specific details on your background and what you want to get out of the conference I'm sure Cameron, I or one of the other contributors to the board can help steer you toward sessions we things are geared toward your goals.
I look forward to meeting you at the conference, please make sure you come up and introduce yourself.

  • Message Codes in essbase

    Version: Essbase 6.5 and 7.1
I'm trying to parse certain application specific essbase log files (for both versions listed above) to track user activity. Basically I'm just targetting the "Requestor" message code range
I'm finding the user logged in by determining what comes after the word "User".
    Examples:
    1. "Administrator Has Temporarily Disabled User Commands"
    2. "Received Command [GetAttributeNameSpecs] from user [testlc]"
    3. "Received Command [GetAlias] from user [testcoml]"
However, my logic won't work in the first example. It will treat "Commands" as a
My question is there a thumb rule by which I can say that if it finds the word "User [" the word following it will be the user id?

Go to the Essbase error messages file http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_error/erhelp.htm
and look for the codes you need. It's better to look for the error number than the description if you can as it will be more precise

  • How to make a really basic pong game for a beginner

Hello.  I've read through a couple of threads on here dealing with making a game of pong in LabView, but in them the users had questions with far more complex aspects of the program than I want to deal with.  I am a beginner programmer in LabView with limited experience in Java and Visual Basic programming.  I was tasked with creating a game over winter break, and now that I finally have some time (this weekend that is), I decided that I'd make a really simple game of pong.  However, I have seriously overestimated the difficulty of this for a beginner who has very limited knowledge of Lab View.
I ask you to please have some patience with me.
I know what I want to do, and just need help inplementing it.
Here is the idea for my design to keep it as simple as possible:
-Create a field (I am not sure what to use for this, but from my reading it appears that some sort of a picture output is needed, but I cannot find that anywhere).
-Set up some simple function that can output the dimensions of this field to use with collision tracking.
-Create a ball that can be tracked by the program.
-From my reading I understand that the simplest way to "bounce" the ball off the sides appears to simply reverse the X velocity of the ball when it strikes the vertical boundaries and the Y velocity when it strikes the horizontal boundaries.
-Insert some sort of a "paddle" that the user can control with the left and right arrow keys.
Now, as I have mentioned I am a beginner with approximately one month maximum knowledge of this software, spread over about a year.  I want to take things slow.  So for starters, would anyone be willing to walk me through creating a visual output for this and creating a ball that will bounce off all sides?
If I can at least get that far for now, then I can move on (with help I hope!) of inserting an interactive interface for the "paddle."
I have found some LabView code for a simple game like this, but it also includes a score keeping loop as well as an "automatic play" option, and I am attempting to wade through all that code to find the bones of it to help me with this, but due to my inexperience, this might thake a lot of time.
I thank you for any and all help anyone may be able to provide.

    EchoWolf wrote:

Wel, there is the picture indicator in the picture palette. In newer versions it's called "2D picture". The palettes have a search function. Using the palette search function is a basic LabVIEW skill that you should know. If you've seen the example for the other discussion, it uses a 2D boolean array indicator. The boolean array is only recommended for a monochrome very low resolution display.
EchoWolf wrote: -Set up some simple function that can output the dimensions of this field to use with collision tracking.

That seems backwards. Properly programmed, the code always knows the dimension and the ball position. The program generates, (not tracks!) the ball movement. Of course you need to do some range checking on the ball position to see when it collides with the walls.
    EchoWolf wrote:

Of course you could make it more realistic by keeping track of three ball parameters: x, y, spin.
    EchoWolf wrote:

Pong is typically played with the up-down arrow keys.

LabVIEW knowledge is not measured in time units. What did you do during that month? Did you attend some lectures, study tutorials, wrote some programs?

Start with the posted example and delete all the controls and indicators that you don't want, then surgically remove all code with broken wires.
Alternatively, start from scratch: Create your playing field. Easiest would be a 2D classic boolean array that is all false. Use initialize array to make it once. Now use a loop to show the ball as a function of time.
Start with a random ball position. to display it, turn one of the array elements true before wiring to the array indicator using replace array subset.
Keep a shift register with xy positions and xy velocities and update the positions as a function of the velocities with each iteration of the loop. Do range checking and reverse the velocieis when a edge is encountered.
What LabVIEW version do you have?
LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

  • Multiple production instances - KScope follow up

Had this posted on Network 54 and it was recommended that I post here as well.
During one of the lunch and learn sessions at KScope I texted in a question about multiple instances in production. It seemed there was some confusion to the question so I thought expanding the question with additional details here may provoke some additional conversation on the topic.
We are currently running a single essbase instance with active - passive clustering in production on 11.1.2.1 (considering 11.1.2.3 for next year). For example purposes lets say we have two business areas sharing the instance each with 50 applications for a total of 100 applications. Things run very smoothly most of the time, but from time to time during peak usages the single threaded nature of the security file can slow things down. My thought was to run two instances of Essbase, one for each business area, one active on server A and one active on server B. They would each have there own failover to the other server.
    Current Set-up
    Server A
    Active
    Instance 1
    100 applications
    Server B
    Passive
    Instance 1
    Proposed Setup
    Server A
    Instance 1 active - 50 applications
    Instance 2 passive
    Server B
    Instance 1 passive
    Instance 2 active - 50 applications
I have seen that you can setup multiple instances on a server, but have also seen that it is not recomended for production. Are they considering this scenario when they do not recommend it or are there other reasons. I am fine if both instances fail to the same server as we run all applications on one server now and have plenty of memory. Also, we would have separate file systems and a separate port for the second instance (our end users do not know the port bases on their log in today so that will not be an issue). Are there any concerns with this approach, has anyone else tried it? We have successfully done this in our development region, but that does not have the usage on it that production has. It also seems a waste to have all the processors and memory sitting on server B not doing anything - we are paying for it why not use it.
Some additional information that was requested.
This is in addition to DR and having failover is required based on internal audit/IT standards.
We have a NAS device and understand that is still a single point of failure and is likely a bottleneck, which is why we archive any modified databases each night along with packaging up rules and calc scripts.
The servers are UNIX with 48 cores and 256+ Gig of Ram.
About half or more of the databases require write back.
    Thanks Andy

We have implemented similar solutions to take advantage of a server that otherwise be redundant for the majority of the time and it does work well, I have not personally done this type of configuration on unix using OPMN but have on windows using failover clusters, I feel OPMN is a bit poor in terms of management and lacks functionality so maybe worth considering Oracle clusterware depending on the flavour of Unix.
You could also look at look at virtualisation options as an alternative.
