Update Essbase Cfg setting using MAXL or ESSCMD

Hi All,
I want to change the essbase.cfg settings using MAXL or Esscmd. Is this possible? I could figure out changing Substitution Variables but am looking forward to change settings like CALCCACHE, etc...
If yes, please let me know any insights on the same.

There is no pre defined feature that allows you to do this, but if you want to override the values in .cfg file, depending on what those values are, you can just set them in your calc script, ie: CalcCache, etc. It is best to do this manually anyway, as once you finished, you will need to recycle the Essbase service for them to take effect.

Not finding ESSBASE.CFG

Hello Gurus!
I am very new to Essbase.
I had Hyperion Essbase 11.1.13 installed. When I added my first essbase server from the administration services console, it was added. Yet when I tried to open it i got the following error "Error: 1042017: Network error: The client or server timed out waiting to receive data using TCP/IP. Check network connections. Increase the NetRetryCount and/or NetDelay values in the ESSBASE.CFG file. Update this file on both client and server. Restart the client and try again."
My problem is is that when I finally found the file essbase.cfg from F:\Hyperion\products\Essbase\EssbaseServer\bin, it consisted of the following:

and I found nothing about NetRetryCount or NetDelay. Is it possible that I downloaded the file the wrong way and that the essbase.cfg isn't complete?
Also, I read in a forum post that essbase.cfg is supposed tp be located in the directory $ARBORPATH but I haven't found such a folder when I searched for it.
BTW I don't think it is exactly a network problem as I pinged the server and it worked just fine.

Also, in the error msg it says:Update this file on both client and server. Restart the client and try again.
my questions are:
1- How do I update client and server
2- how do I restart the client?

Unable to start Essbase app when activating JVM in Essbase.cfg

Hi,
I am using Essbase 6.5.3, one of my application that uses a CDF won't start when activating the JVM in Essbase.cfg. Please help. Thanks.

I have successfully tested CDF in Essbase v6.5.7.
Can you please answer below questions.
1. Did you place the CDF file at respective location ?(Normally, there is a JAVA directory and you can place in that directory or create a new directory and place it in that directory under JAVA)
2. Did you update udf.policy file? Updating this file is required if you are using a cdf function like JExport which will extract the data and store in a file or database.
3. Did you set the JVM to the correct location? When you start an application are you getting a message like "JVM Initialization Failed". If the message appears, then the possible cause would be with your JVM setting.
4. Did you register the function to that specific application? You can register it directly from Application manager or use a MAXL Script to register the function.
Once you have successfully done the above steps, restart the application and check the log file
If successfully registered, you will see a message as
"Function "@JExport" registered [OK] (Similar kind of message.
If you still get error message, please post the log file content of that application.

So I try increasing the THREAD parameters in the essbase.cfg, but I don't really now what limit my system has (W2K SP2, 2 Processors, 2Gbyte RAM)Thanks in advance

Essbase.cfg file

I am a novice and would like to know how to set the parameters in Cfg file.When I have opened the file I am seeing only one entry there in that filei.e about JVMModulelocation. I wonder why all those default settings are not shown there? Can someone guide me on this?Jaya

JVMModulelocation .This Itself sets all default options.if you want means you can add some commands to change default settings and you can see it through app manager.Let me know if you have any Questions ?ThanksSreenivas

Unable to load data from essbase to Sql server2005

When executing the DataExport command Iam encountering the following error:

John, I have installed the appropriate patch for OCI. But for loading data I get the following error:
"Cannot get async process state. Essbase Error(1042017): Network error: The client or server timed out waiting to receive data using TCP/IP."
I had increased values of ConnectRetry and netDelay in the essbase.cfg. and restarted the server but unfortunately got the same error.

Is there a way to force essbase to use a certain disk?

We run essbase 9.3.1 most bso databases, but also some ASO.
Is there a way to force essbase to use a certain disk?
Our operating system runs on C:\. Essbase is installed on D:\ Our M:\ drive is for data purpose.
We want to direct essbase to create the *.ind and *pag files on the M:\ drive.
To do so I added "DISKVOLUMES M C 0k D 0k " to the essbase.cfg, restarted essbasse and created and loaded a new application. But is still creates the ind and pag file soin D:\ With configure application I am able to move the files before a databases is loaded.
Is there a way to force essbase to use a certain disk?

You can only correct it afterwards.
We want the essbase admins NOT be able to create a application on a certain path.
All the given answers tell me: let them do it and change it later on.

Are you sure the paths for arborpath (including bin directory) & libpath (lib) are set correctly? Otherwise save your essbase.sec and essbase.cfg, reinstall essbase, copy saved files back and restart

Error in deploying the cubes in Essbase Studio

I am getting below error when I try to depoly ASO cubes in Essbase Studio.
***Failed to deploy Essbase cube***
***Caused By: Error when retrieving data from SQL source***

***Caused By: [Hyperion][DB2 JDBC Driver]SQLDIAGGRP was specified and not null.***
I also checked the error log generated in the applications asking to increase the NETDELAY and NETRETRY COUNTS in ESSBASE.CFG, the config file. I made those changes, restarted the services and deployed again but in vain.

There have been a number of MaxL bugs with encryption that produce 'Parse error near...' messages. If you login to Oracle Support and search the Knowledge Base on 'Parse error near' you will find them. I can't see anything specifically relating to 11.1.2.1 or a known defect in the release notes... ...I'd get a support ticket raised, if you haven't already.
You don't mention platform, but I've also run into a bug running 'deploy' in 11.1.2.1 on a 64-bit Windows environment and there was a Unix bug too, but they both caused crashes so probably aren't your problem.

Whether it's on windows or unix, the principle is the same. I recommend you to read the documentation recommended by John.
From version 11.1.1.3, you can have automated backup.
For automated backup, you can refer to the Essbase Technical Reference, look for:
TRANSACTIONLOGDATALOADARCHIVE and TRANSACTIONLOGLOCATION in the essbase.cfg section.
And you need to use Maxl script to initiate the backup and recovery:
- For example to backup: alter database Sample.Basic force archive to file '/Hyperion/backupfile.arc';
- For example to restore: alter database Sample.Basic force restore from file '/Hyperion/backupfile.arc';

Manual Backup:
1. Full backup: --> I personally not a fan of this. Please test before you implement to make sure it works.
- Execute Maxl to BeginArchive the database
- Then backup the entire App directory.
- Execute Maxl to EndArchive the database
--> To restore, stop the app and then recover the entire directory from Backup.
--> If the data files are in different directory, make sure this gets backup too.
2. Selective backup:
- Execute Maxl to BeginArchive the database
- Backup .otl, .rul, .csc, .rep and any other independent object which you want to backup, e.g. .atx, .alg, .olg, .sel, .eqd
- Export level 0 or export input level or full export the database
- Execute End Archive to the database
--> To restore, stop the application.
--> You can recover the objects you want to recover, for example, outline, rule, calc script etc.
--> Start the app, and you can clear the existing data and re-import the data from backup, then run aggregation afterwards
--> with this one, you can create a blank app, which blank database, then recover to this newly created database.
You have several choices here, implement which you think is better for your objective.
I personally never use the automated backup and use the selective manual backup.

Max no. of users connections in essbase

Hi All,
How can i find what is the max. no. of users connections is allowed for essbase. If there is some setting in EAS console or we can define it through MAXL. We are using very old version (version 6- using ESSCMD commands). We have already provided access to about 475 users. 200 more users are waiting for access.

Herewith the relevant parameter you can define in your ESSBASE.CFG - it should answer your question:
MAXLOGINS
Sets a limit on the number of user sessions that can be connected to the Essbase Server at any one time.
Syntax
MAXLOGINS n
n Any integer from 1000 to 1048575 is valid. The default value is 10000.
Description
This setting limits the maximum number of user sessions allowed to connect to the Essbase Server at any one time. This number includes multiple instances of the same user.
You may wish to adjust the value of MAXLOGINS to match computer resources, or to more closely manage concurrent ports and user sessions. A concurrent port is used for each unique combination of client machine, Essbase Server and login name. For example, the same user > with five open Excel worksheets connected to the same Essbase Server use one port, but five sessions.
Notes
Increasing the value of MAXLOGINS increases memory use approximately 6 bytes per user session.
If the setting is less than the minimum value, 1000, the value is assumed to be 1000.
Example
MAXLOGINS 50000
increases the maximum number of simultaneous logins possible, from the default of 10000 to 50000. > Kind regards
