Essbase Cube Build is hung once in a while

Hello All -
We've nightly essbase cube build (BSO/ASO both) on Essbase 11.1.1.3 installed on Unix HP-UX B.11.31. There are total 30 cubes and 7-8 cubes run in parallel most of the times. There is separate MaxL script for each cube and they are called in proper order through a scheduler. We've seen once in a while that one cube build (Maxl script) goes in hung state does nothing. This happens once in a month or so and it's not to a specific cube. It happens to any of the cubes. We went through the log files and didn't find anything.
We've noticed below instances while one cube build is in hung state when other 6-7 cubes are running fine in parallel.
1. Connecting to the server
2. Import dimension/data
Do we need to check some setup in Unix or config files? If any of you had faced this situation before, please let me know. That would really help!

I have seen a similar issue with our Essbase cube. Although we only have one cube. It does the night update routine just fine and users are logged in and working when all of sudden the cube freezes up. I can login to EAS, but when I select my server it just hangs. I can login into Workspace/Planning or Excel Add-In but when I select an Application, it just hangs.
We are also on a Unix box. We've checked all the logs and there is no error message indicating what might be wrong. The second time it occured we logged a ticket with Oracle and had them online. They checked our logs and found nothing. We uploaded all our log files to them for their team to take a look. They suspect our Essbase Agent wasn't running...not sure what the Agent is. That was a week ago and haven't heard back from Oracle.
To solve the problem we stopped and started the Essbase services only and the application came back. No data was lost or corrupted.
I've never seen this before. I've worked for two other employers with Essbase and both were on Window's boxes and never experienced this issue. First time I've worked with the software on a Unix box...

I think LLD is for low level design.
In any Essbase cube building, We didn't take much pressure for the design document.
Just we will document a report matrix.
Based on this we will identify entities(dimensions) and attributes(members).
From this we will analyze the data availability and the level of input into essbase.
This is enough to get into Application manager and we will build the prototype cube and allow the business users to drill into the cube.
From here we will do the changes to the design as well as to the cube to reflect the business users review comments.
Once cube is accepted we will deliver the final version of the design document with all the needed databse screen shots and batch scripts to automate the cubebuild.

Build essbase cube using Sql query.....

Hi Team, Can we build dimensions as well as load data into essbase cubes using sql query generated from cognos cube. If so , please guide me the procedure

I'm not sure about cognos, if you can create an ODBC connection you can try using that in SQL load rules and see if that works.

I wanna now if is possible build an essbase cube from two facts. My source is a dwh that have two facts.
- Fact A with dimensions D1,D2 and D3
- Fact B with dimensions D1,D2 and D4
Both facts have a relation 1 to n. How can i model that?

How to build an Essbase cube

Hi Everyone
I am new to Essbase , i looking for step by step process of creating essbase cubes . Please suggest me what tools do i need to use to build essbase cubes on relational database(Oracle 10g) . How hard is it for fresh guy to build according to a business requirement. Do i need to learn any scripting language to build a cube which involves in lot of calculation. I have googled a lot to get information on this, but i didn't get full information .Please provide me a link or doc or video through which i will get complete understanding of building essbase cube.

Hi,
I have Essbase 7.1.3 windows server and We do lots of Cube processing through Batch Files.
I would like to have an option to send email alerts to the business users once we are done with the processing.
Say for example , I have a Deposits Essbase cube and once i am done with the calculation and Enable connects to the users i would like to send a mail notification " The Deposit Cube now available....."
Essbase have some thing called " Triggers..." But i am not sure how far will it help me.

Okay, yes, I still use esscmd, so this example is for an esscmd script (some day I will convert them, I promise...).
The shell (batch) script that I use calls esscmd to do the job, and then scans the script (using the for command) for tokens. These tokens determine who gets an email depending on the outcome of the script. By encoding the messaging into the script, I can control the business logic at an appropriate level. The TITLE token is also used during the notification, but I left the logic out that builds the SUBJECT variable (for brevity)...

Essbase Studio: Failed to deploy Essbase cube

Hi
I have started working with Essbase studio sometime back and I am able to deploy BSO cube with success using the TBCSample Database which comes along with Essbase. Now I wanted to deploy ASO cube, as no sample database is available I thought to create one, I extracted ASOSamp using ODI to CSV files. Then I bulk inserted the csv extracts into MSSQL 2003 server which created 11 tables (Age, Geography, IncomeLevel, Measures, PaymentType, Product, Stores, Time TransactionType, Year). The above mentioned table does not have any keys(Primary, Foreign) as it is an Essbase export.
I then successful created ASO Cube Schema using the newly created sample database in MSSQL, validated cube schema without any errors.
Essbase Property Setting:
Measures Hierarchy is tagged as Dynamic Compression at dimension level
Time, Product and Year Hierarchy is tagged as Multiple Hierarchies Enabled, Year does not have multiple hierarchies but it has formulas for Variance and Variance % member. Is there a way to tag Year as Dynamic hierarchy?
But when I try to deploy the cube to Essbase I receive following errors:

Are these errors due to data source, if yes what could be possible work around?
Is there any problem with Essbase properties which I have set if so then when I validate cube schema why I dn't get any errors?
Please help me, I am stuck here not able to deploy ASO Cube.

Multiple columns (named the same originally) and mapped to the same lookup table are causing a Cube Build issue

Hey folks, looking for some insight here.
I've an implementation that contains some custom Enterprise columns mapped to lookup tables. In the instance I'm working with now, it looks like there was/is an issue with one of those columns. In this scenario, I have a column named
ProjectType, created initially with that name, mapped to a lookup table. This field's name was then changed to
Project Type. After that, it looks like another column was created, also called
ProjectType. So now, we have what I would have originally thought was two distinct columns, even though the names used are the same.
Below is the error we're currently getting during the Cube Build Process...

We tried taking it out of the cubes, and it builds fine. The challenge we're having is in building the cubes with that custom field "ProjectType". It's as if the cubes still hold some reference to it even when it's deleted.
Since the OLAP View ('MSP_EpmProject_OlapView_{guid}') is recreated, would it be as simple as deleting that View, and trying to recreate?

Was told not to report off transaction essbase cubes

Hello there,
we recently implemented Hyperion Planning and have 3 Essbase cubes: Planning, Capex, and workforce. We want to hook OBIEE up to the cubes for reporting. We have been told it is not best practice to report off the same cubes we're transacting in. How should we go about building reporting cubes? Is it as simple as "backing up" or copying our transactional cubes?

Multiple source columns from Oracle DB to Hyperion Essbase cube

We have a Source as oracle table to the target Hyperion Essbase Cube(Planning) 11.1.2 using ODI 11g.
Right now my issue is We need to map multiple columns from Oracle DB to One Dimension in Essbase (Planning).

Now using ODI ,* I want to map the oracle table columns(Multiple) to the dimension(Catdefinition) ? * Please suggest me with idea to achieve multiple column mapping to the single dimension in Essbase .

Do you even need FDM? You could build a load rule in Essbase directly. If you need to map, then you would register the Essbase target adapter.

Error regarding data load into Essbase cube for Measures using ODI

Hi Experts,
I am able to load metadata for dimensions into Essbase cube using ODI but when we are trying same for loading data for Measures encountring following errrors:
Time,Item,Location,Quantity,Price,Error_Reason

We are having a similar problem. We're using the IKM SQL to Hyperion Essbase (DATA) knowledge module. We are mapping the actual data to the field called 'Data' in the model. But it kicks everything out saying 'Unknown Member [Data] in Data Load', as if it's trying to read that field as a dimension member. We can't see what we missed in building the interface. I would think the knowledge module would just know that the Data field is, um, data; not a dimension member. Has anyone else encountered this?

Essbase Cube Performance

Hi,
We have migrated Essbase applications and server to new server. But cube build is taking almost double time as compare to old server. Eventhough new server configuration is very powerfull (Processor - 3Ghz, RAM-8GB, Disk Space - 380 GB).
All the settings like application, database, configuration are same on both the servers. Also calculation is taking double time.
Kindly tell what could be the reasons for it?

when you are adding a new member into Dense dimension. The cube uder dense (full) restructuring.
Information from DBAG
To perform a full restructure, Analytic Services does the following:
1.Creates temporary files that are copies of the .ind, .pag, .otl, .esm, and .tct files. Each temporary file substitutes either N or U for the last character of the file extension, so the temporary file names are dbname.inn, essxxxxx.inn, essxxxxx.pan, dbname.otn, dbname.esn, and dbname.tcu.
2.Reads the blocks from the database files copied in step 1, restructures the blocks in memory, and then stores them in the new temporary files. This step takes the most time.
3.Removes the database files copied in step 1, including .ind, .pag, .otl, .esm, and .tct files.

EAL replicated Essbase cube empty

Hi,
I am trying to build a replicated Essbase cube using EAL from HFM, all 11.1.2.2. The EAL bridge shows green across the board, so all good. When I build a transparent cube, I can see the data in Essbase, nio problems. Now I am trying to build a replicated cube, using the same region and Essbase grid definition as for the transparent. The outline gets built fine, and when I go to retrieve, it does the retrieve, shows the status bar, and eventually comes back with Successful.
However when I look at the replicated cube there is no data in it, no blocks were created, nothing. When I look in the EAL log, there are no errors, the last entry refers to Extract Region with a list of the dimensions, nothing more. I tried using both Embedded and a specific APS URL in the Essbase cube link in EAL. Like I said the transparent cube is fine, so I believe the region and grid definitions are valid, so I cannot understand why the data is not in the replicated cube.
Anyone has experienced anything similar and might have some hints?

Could the level 0 data have been zeroed out, and no agg run to propagate the zeros (or #Missing) to upper levels?
Did you at one time have some data in the database, then lock n send to overwrite?
If you had performed a database reset, that would leave no page file. If you simply overwrote data, then you could have some fragmentation (when data is overwritten, the data is written to a new space in the page file with the index pointing to new data. This leaves the prior data behind with no index pointer to it, but it's still in the page file.)
Was the export file of all data, or level zero data?
If it was level 0 export, perform an export all (3mb is not that much) to verify if there is any data. If not, I'd chalk it up to fragmentation.

Availability of Essbase cube

In AS 2005 MOLAP mode, a cube is available for browsing (querying) while the cube is reprocessing (not re-building), ie cube is updated with new member & factor data. I would like to know whether Essbase cubes are available for querying while data loading with (& without) restruring the dimensions.

Hi Chandra,
Generally the answer is yes (except during a restructure of the outline). In the Essbase database admin guide, there is a section on commited and uncommited access which explains when a block is available to a user during a data load or calculation.
