1) Don't believe you can get this info.
2) You set this in configuration
3) Time being dense means it's part of each block and therefore if you use 1 time period then a clock is created for all time periods
4) There isn't a recommended size. It's more to do with what you want to do with it. Generally a really big cube is better in a ASO. And a read/write cube and / or a cube with lots of calcs in better BSO. But the lines are blurred and there isn't a simple answer. You need to evaluate your environment uniquely.

Doubt in EAL (Essbase Analytic Link)

Hi All,
I have doubt in EAL (Essbase Analytic Link)
I was not able to find the 'Target Design Grid' tab and 'Connection Type' tab (to set replicate or transparent partition) and 'Security migration' options under 'Essbase' tab in Bridge Window. Any specific selection we need to do for this?
Also, Analytic link repository will contain the tables (metadata) similar to HFM repository which will create the essbase outline. But we make partition with Data synchronizing server with essbase. So it means DSS database also have same tables as Analytic link repository? At what time the DSS database is getting populated?
I gave a try many times by reading Oracle docs but some little doubts are still pending . Hope i will get a reply from you as usual

Essbase Studio SQL Query Doubt

Can some on explain me what does the below statements mean realted to Data Load SQL Override Editing
"If a member is prefixed with previous members of its dimension (for example, parent or all ancestors), more columns are returned.
● If some columns in the data load SQL statements are NULL, you can add SQL statements to load the data at the next level in the outline. This is known as NULL Promotions."

Essbase Dimension build error and Unable to Stop/Start Application

Hi All,
I am trying to build the dimendion in the ASO application it is throwing the Error meaasage " Dimension Biuld failed , ther may be problem in allocating memory".
While i am trying to and Start/Stop my respective Application it is throwing the below error meaasge
I tried to debug this issue by checking the Locked objects, and asked my Admin to close my sessions forcebully if any running and also checking all rules files . But i didn't get any clue/solution from them.
Please help me out from this issue

Thanks for your answer friend. My admin has successfully killed my session forcebully. And he doubted that i may not have enough rights to Stop/Start application and he provided me the required rights. After that also the error is repeating as below. we two are not getting where we went wrong.

How to rename existing members in an Essbase Outline

Hi there,
I would like to do as follows:
1. List all members at Level-0 of a specified dimension (or parent member) that have names matching a wildcard string. e.g. names begining with 'JWC'.
2. Delete the Level-0 members that satisfy the above condition. I must verify the list from 1 above before deleting the members.
3. Rename remaining/existing members at Level-0 of the dimension (or parent member) specified above by attaching a required prefix to the existing name.
Note:
1. I am working with an historical cube and I must preserve past year data. Hence I cannot select "Remove Unspecified" on the dimension build rule as my current data set contains data for current year only.
*kp> The level-0 members that I need deleted contains data for current year only, hence I can safely delete them.
2. I am expecting some sort of script/s (CALC or Maxl?) that will allow me to do the above tasks (List, Delete, Rename) without any manual input.
3. I must get this done by 31 Jan and before rolling out the oldest year data. Hence I urgently need your help here!

Error while adding essbase server(V9.3.1)

I have installed all essbase related products and configured everything thru configuration utility successfully.But while adding essbase server through ADMINISTARTION SERVICES CONSOLE,I got the following error.

I am sure that I am giving correct credentials as I did it couple of times.I just added the essbase server as LOCALHOST and username as ADMIN and password as PASSWORD and confirm password as PASSWORD.I am not sure where I am making mistake.or Do I need to configure anything after adding the ADMINISTARTION SERVER through CONSOLE.
Please let me know if you have any idea on this.

Yes,While configuring essbase server,it has asked me to provide userid and password twice.
First time:
By default it came with userid as hypuser.But i changed it to essadmin(This is the user which i have created in database specifcally for essbase).
Second Time:
After the above step is completed ,when i click next,It was asking the for userid.By default it came with admin.I left it as it is and provided password as password.
After this it took several mins to configure and finally came out successfully.
Now my doubt is that Do I need to provide essadmin(which i have given while configuring essbase server) while adding essbase server through CONSOLE?.

Write Back Capability in Essbase

Dear All,
I read some where BSO has a direct write-back capability which is not possible in ASO, correct me if i'm wrong. Now my doubt is What is write back capability.

'Write-back' refers to the ability of end-users to send values directly to the cube from a combined read / write interface such as the Essbase Excel Add-In, Smart View, Dodeca, Planning etc. A user can look at a value retrieved from the cube, decide for whatever reason that he or she wishes to change it, enter a new value and 'write it back'.
This is in contrast to data loaded (usually as part of a batch process) from an external system.
ASO is one of the two data storage mechanisms available in Essbase - it stands for 'Aggregate Storage Option'. As John said, write back to ASO cubes is only possible at 'level zero', and this feature was not introduced until version 9.3.1. Hyperion smartview 9.3.1.5R2 and essbase 9.3.1.3

I aaworking in smartview and essbase reporting support for 3 months. I have some doubts about the version of hyperion 9.3.1.5R2 and essbase 9.3.1.3.
I have got lot of cases where the hyperion add-ins got corrupted. Does this version gets corrupted easily?
Also I noticed that my colleagues who support a differnet version Oracle fusionware 11.1.2.1 for smartview and essbase
have never had cases of corruption. Is there something I should change in the system settings?
Please help me in this.

Oracle Data Source for Essbase

Hi, Good Morning to ALL,
I have a doubt using Oracle Data Source with Essbase. When we use Oracle as the Data Source to load the data into Essbase cubes which of the following options would be better?
1. Is it better to create a single table or view, when the data is in multiple tables and then load into essbase?
OR
2. Is it better to join the tables by entering the SELECT statement in the Administration Services Console during the data load?
Which of these methods can be processed faster?

There are a couple of theories for loading Essbase from relational sources.
To be optimal there are techniques that you can create in the relational database to make joining more efficient.
Single View/Table
Everything you need in one large view. You can create one of these every period if you are performing incremental loads.
Star Schema
One large fact table all dimensions are represented with single Id foreign keys
One dimension table per dimension whose primary keys are connected to the fact
Snow-flake Schema
One large fact table all dimensions are represented with single Id foreign keys
Mutiple dimension tables per dimension whose primary keys are foreign keys in each connecting table then to the fact
These are the "text book" options; many other hybrid ways have been developed in recent years.
I would recommend using EIS against any relational source, as it will guide you through the OLAP loading process.

1. we have to migrate 7.1.6 to 11.1.3 and then
2. 11.1.3 to 11.1.2.2.
Will the migration utility work to migrate 7.1.6 to 11.2.2? Please suggest on this am not getting a clear clarification on this.

Cannot see all the essbase dimensions when performed reverse engg.using ODI

Hi,
I performed the reverse engineering process for getting the dimensions from Essbase to the Model. First time the session has shown an error. When i right clicked the session in the operator and clicked on restart it has run succesfuly. But only the Accounts dimension got reversed. The rest of the dimensions are not seen in the Model. Please suggest

I have got to import my actuals data which is ther in Oracle database to Planning. As i was told that ODI is not compatible with EPMA, i cannot load data into Planning using ODI. As anyways the data is to be stored in essbase itself i want to use ODI to load the data into essbase. For metadata upload i am making use of Interface tables
My problem is
1.do i need to have a staging table for bringing my actuals data into it first and then connect it to Essbase?
2. If yes, what shud be the table format, like the columns?
3. And, the user wants this to be automated. And if there are any changes to the base tables(tables with actual data in oracle) they shud be reflected in the essbase aslo. So is there any lookup functionality in ODI?
I am new to ODI so having many doubts. Hope to see a reply soon

I have following doubts regarding loading data to Hyperion planning by a custom connector
1) Loading data to Hyperion Planning application using Essbase Java API would be possible at application layer (Hyperion Planning) or at database layer (loading data directly to essbase database) ?
2) If we load data directly to essbase database how are we going to recognize which essbase server is connected with Hyperion Planning application ? Does user require to know in advance the underlying databse server ? Is there any API in Essbase or in Planning to connect to Planning application ?
3) If we load data directly to essbase database how to find out Planning applications and essbase application ? In other words how to differentiate between essbase applications and Hyperion Planning appllications ? Or How to recognize Planning applications ? Is there any API in Essbase to find out this ?
4) If we read data directly from Essbase how do we recognize data from a Planning application ?
5) What is the difference between Classic planning application and EPMA planning application ? Can we develop a connector to work with both these flavour or type ?

Essbase port issue

I have one doubt regarding Essbase ports usage.
If I define 1000 to 2000 ports range for Essbase Server in config file….
If some other application (Not Essbase) is running one of these port say 1200… I start my Essbase server.. one application tries to start on 1200 port….. what will happen??
Whether server will rollback all the application which are started before this one??

I have followed all the steps, but in step 4 when I try to make a new connection, i still get the same error message as before i.e. *"Unable to connect to essbase:1423. Client timed out waiting to connect to Analytic Services Agent using TCP/IP. Make sure that server and port values correct "*
I think I am making some mistake in step 3 while assigning access EAS and access Essbase rights. Can you tell me how to do this exactly? The way I am doing it is by selecting the admin user from User Directory->Native Directory and then going to the provisioning screen for that user. In the provisioning screen I select all admin roles for the user... Is this the correct way? I tried one more way, which is to select my Essbase Server in the Projects directory and do right-click -> 'Assign Access Control'. This gives me an error message saying *'Login failed due to invalid credentials'* .. could this be because to begin with I am NOT logged into SS as an admin? How can I check and change what my SS rights are?
