Essbase hangs on solaris

Hi all,
We installed System 9 in Dev Env. We are testing the installation by creating sample reports
in webanalysis and FR.It worked fine when we craeted. later on when we are trying to create new
reports from (DEMO -> basic) Essbase, the process hangs.
I need to kill the session in Unix. I killed the sessions almost 10 times. I could able to load the sample data
into the Planning cube. and i can see the sample forms generated from planning application .
Any sugestions plz...............
Thanks.

Does you see any errors in the Essbase.log file, application log, or system logs? Are you running into resource constraints?
Have you set your ulimits for memory and stack in the .profile of the user which executes the Essbase process?
Are you using 9.3.1 or another revision of Essbase?
Regards,
-John

  • Installation hang on Solaris 10

    I've been trying to install Solaris 10 on a Compaq(HP) ProLiant ML350 G3, so far without success. During the pre-boot Configuration process, I get a few messages about conflicts between a couple of 'devices' identified only as PNP0A00 and PNP0303. I've read elsewhere that these can be safely ignored ... so I've assumed that's correct and let 'em go.
    When the boot-from-CD process begins, the first (and last) text I see is "Loading Driver ata.bef." At that point the CD activity light stops flashing and the machine hangs hard - it has to be physically powered down. I've seen on other sites that this condition will clear up after 10 or 20 minutes, but in my case it has persisted indefinitely.
    This computer, a ProLiant ML350 G3, has 2 hyperthreaded 2.2Ghz Intel Xeon CPUs, 2.8 GB of memory, q Compaq Smart Array 642 SCSI Raid controller with 4 72GB Drives in Raid 5 (seen as two volumes of 16 and 56 GB), Hitachi GCR 8480-B CD-ROM drive (IDE), ATI Rage XL PCI video, standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse, Compaq NC7760 Gigabit ethernet adapter (Broadcom).
    I really need some help here...Any suggestions (short of trying a different machine altogether)?
    Thank in advance,
    jeff

    Hi Philippe,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I installed the whole suite including directory server in a non-defaut install directory. I am wondering if changing install directory will cause issues.

  • WLS6.1 hanging on Solaris- and SIGQUIT doesn't work

    Hi,
    We are experiencing a problem that looks like a deadlock when our server is under load (using WLS6.1SP2, Solaris 8 and the 1.3.1 JVM supplied with WLS). After processing many requests, the server hangs and CPU usage drops to 0%. Unfortunately the standard means of getting a thread dump (sending a SIGQUIT with kill -3 or Ctrl-\) does nothing. The problem also occurs if WebLogic is running under debug (using
    -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=none -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=5555) but alas the debugger hangs when trying to pause the server after this deadlock). It appears as though the server is not accepting any requests (including administrative requests from the console) but this doesn't seem to be due to thread starvation as CPU usage is 0%.
    The only output we can get is from truss, which seems to indicate no activity at all until the SIGQUIT is received. It seems to register the SIGQUIT but it looks as though it is not being processed.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Kevin.

    We found a solution to this problem, relating to the threading model that the JVM
    uses.
    Have a look at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/threads/threads.html for more
    details.
    The default threading model on Solaris 8 is many-to-many (threads to LWPs) with
    thread-based synchronisation. After playing with various threading models, we
    found that the best was one-to-one with the alternate thread library. This is
    the default provided by Solaris 9, but you can also tell Java to use this with
    older versions of Solaris by putting the following line in your start command
    prior to executing WebLogic:
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    Apologies to anyone who was looking for an answer to this beforehand: I should
    have replied to this newsgroup back in September!

    potential work arounds. Depending upon the data in the pstack output,

  • Java hang on Solaris 9 64 bit

    On the Solaris 9 64bit while I'm using my java (jre1.3.1) application causes the Java windows to hang. These windows cannot be closed or even killed from the resident Window manager.
    But if I use Solaris 8 64 bit or Solaris 9 32 bit my application works well without hang.
    Can someone help me???
    thank you
    Rina

    Although I got the following link
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/A96167_01/toc.htm
    however, it's for Solaris 8.
    Is the process same for Solaris 9 or there're any issues during the installation?
    Are there any additional configuration compatibility checks need to be done?
    Is there any quick installation steps like your earlier link?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I didnt compile with -g option, but i got to the root of problem. In the program I was just doing cout , so it was very simple, but I was linking libpthread library with the program , also was giving -mt flag during compilation. When I removed this both, the program disn't dump core and nither did it hang.
    But the same thing worked with solaris 2.8 64 bit CC 5.0 with patch 108528-10 .
    So I just can make out the difference as to why this this is happening

    Hello,
    We have a new 220R Solaris 8 ( Generic_108528-13 ) box

    fixed it,
    when I took out all PATH's ( setenv PATH .... ) it worked.
    Here is what I had had for a PATH list:
    setenv PATH /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/dt/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb
    setenv PATH ${PATH}:${ORACLE_HOME}/bin
    setenv PATH ${PATH}:.
    I'm guessing that the install was accessing a make from the wrong
    location. that's only a guess.... anyways I commented the all
    PATH variables out and the runInstaller worked/completed it task.

  • System_Exec and Open System Command Pipe hangs in Solaris

    I'm using LV 7.1.1 on Solaris and I'm having major problems with the System Exec function in combination with Open System Command Pipe.
    1. The program has to run different stuff in parallel but the System Exec won't run in parallel with Open System Command Pipe. It immediately hangs and neither function ever returns. LabVIEW must be killed.
    2. After executing Open System Command Pipe, stopping the program and then executing a System Exec, that too hangs. The external script called by Open System Command Pipe is no longer running but obviously LV leaves something behind anyway. Close Pipe doesn't seem to clean up everything. Again, LabVIEW must be killed.
    3. Also, regardless of any System Exec call, the first time Open System Command Pipe and Read Pipe is executed it takes a very long time to get the result. After stopping the program and restarting it, it's much faster.
    Has anyone else experienced these problems?

    I'm having the same difficulties... tried many things, with no luck...

  • System.getRuntime().exec() sometimes hangs on Solaris 10 u4...

    Hi everyone, I have a multi-threaded application that basically starts external programs ( bash scripts ) using Runtime.getRuntime().exec(unixCmd); The thread waits for the process to finish and when it does, returns the return code from the process. During peak period, it's not rare that the program reaches at least 5 concurrent threads, therefore 5 process are running at the same time.
    We used to run this program on Solaris 10 u2 using Java 1.5.0_6 and we never had any problem whatsoever. Recently, we moved the application to a new server running on Solaris 10 u4 using Java 1.5.0.15 and the problems started... We observed that about 1% of all the process launched hang. Even the destroy() method of the process has no effect. The only way to stop the process is with the cmd kill -9. We also observed that the script called by the application is not executed at all, not even the first line.
    Here is my code:
        Runtime shell = Runtime.getRuntime();
        Process proc = shell.exec(cmd_unix_final);
        if (Server.getProperty(PROP_LOG_ENABLED).toLowerCase().equals("true"))
          outputGobbler = new StreamGobbler(proc.getInputStream(), Server.getProperty(PROP_LOG_OUTPUT_FILE), Server.getPhase());
          errorGobbler = new StreamGobbler(proc.getErrorStream(), Server.getProperty(PROP_LOG_ERROR_FILE), Server.getPhase());
          outputGobbler.start();
          errorGobbler.start();
        do
          try
            returnValue = proc.exitValue();
            processFinished = true;
          catch (IllegalThreadStateException e)
            try { Thread.sleep(sleepInterval);}catch(InterruptedException ex){ex.printStackTrace();}
        while (System.currentTimeMillis() - launchTime < threadTimeout * 1000 * 60 && !processFinished);
        if (!processFinished)
          proc.destroy();
          returnValue = ServerReturnCodes.SERVER_RETURN_CODE_TIMEOUT_ERROR;
        return returnValue;
    ...If you have any idea what is causing the problem, please let me know, thanks!

    Thank you both for your replys. We are going to try an other version of Java soon... As for the process, the bash script does not even gets executed, the process hangs before that, at the creation phase.

  • NFS / automount hangs on Solaris 10 SunOS oats 5.10 Generic_125100-07 sun4u

    We are running Solaris 10 125100-07 on a SunFire V440.
    We host computer services for another department on this host.
    The server acts as both an NFS server and an NFS client. We do a lot of cross-mounting in our environment due to the lack of large centralized storage.
    This particular machine automounts shares from our Solaris 8, 9 and 10 servers and possibly a few Suse servers, and a NetApp owned by another department.
    Every day and a half or so, something happens to either NFS or the automounter, and the machine 'hangs' in that we have NFS requests that never get filled.
    Restarting either autofs or the nfs client, or both does not seem to help. The only fix we have found so far is a reboot.
    We have throttled NFS_CLIENT_VERSMAX to 3 and set AUTOMOUNT_VERBOSE and AUTOMOUNTD_VERBOSE both to TRUE.
    The general failures we see look like this:
    May 17 04:44:15 oats nfs: [ID 333984 kern.notice] NFS server grieg not respondin
    g still trying
    May 17 04:44:15 oats last message repeated 1 time
    May 17 04:46:15 oats automountd[392]: [ID 196269 daemon.error] dupreq_nonidemp:
    duplicate request in progress
    May 17 04:49:57 oats last message repeated 4 times
    May 17 04:52:15 oats automountd[392]: [ID 196269 daemon.error] dupreq_nonidemp:
    duplicate request in progress
    The dupreq_nonidemp messages repeat until we reboot.
    The nfs server that does not respond varies from day to day. No other computer on our network complains about it.
    This started after we installed 125100-05, and has continued through 125100-07.
    As far as I can tell we are up to date on patches:
    root@oats # smpatch analyze
    No patches required.
    Any thoughts?
    I was thinking I might back out 125100-XX.

    Interesting,
    we have the same problem on SunOS Generic_118833-36 on V440, V445, V240, V245, but not on an old E420, and not on a T2000.
    We upgraded them with patch cluster to Generic_138888-07, but it has not changed anything:
    E420 and T2000 are stable, the Fire-Vxxx have problem, each has its own "problem interval": one system 1.5 days, two systems 10 days, one every 3 months.
    The problem is: NFS/TCP is suddenly dead. Then all NFS mounts, e.g. a manual mount, is hung with "NFS server not responding". A reboot helps.
    We have added proto=udp to the mount options. No more problems since.
    Permanent mounts, without Automounter, would certainly work, too.
    But IMHO there is nothing wrong with Automounter itself, but the hanging occurs e.g. after 4000 NFS mounts, and Automounter is the enabler for that.

  • Running java process in a while loop using Runtime.exec() hangs on solaris

    I'm writting a multithreaded application in which I'll be starting multiple instances of "AppStartThread" class (given below). But other threads are working fine.

    2. Other thing i noticed is the Thread is hanging after completing the process ("java ExecuteProcess"). But the P.waitFor() is not coming out.
    3. Is it bcoz of the same problem as given in Bug ID : 4098442 ?.
    4. Also java 1.2.2 documentation says:

    I'm running this on sun Solaris/java 1.2.2 standard edition. If any of you have experienced the same problem please help me out.
    Will the same problem can happen on java 1.2.2 enterprise edition.?

    1. Is there any problem with starting a Thread inside

    2. Other thing i noticed is the Thread is hanging
    after completing the process ("java ExecuteProcess").
    But the P.waitFor() is not coming out.This is a vital clue. Is the process started by the Runtime.exec() actually completing or does the ps command still show that it is running?
    3. Is it bcoz of the same problem as given in Bug ID :
    4098442 ?.
    4. Also java 1.2.2 documentation says:

    ed buffer size for standard input and output streams,
    failure to promptly write the input stream or read the
    output stream of the subprocess may cause the
    subprocess to block, and even deadlock. "These two are really the same thing (4098442 is not really a bug due to the reasons explained in the doc). If the program that you are exec'ing produces very much output, it is possible that the buffers to stdout and stderr are filling preventing your program from continuing. On Windows platforms, this buffer size is quite small (hundreds of characters) while (if I recall) on Solaris it is somewhat larger. However, I have seent his behavior causing problem on Solaris 8 in my own systems.
    I once hit this problem when I was 'sure' that I was emitting no output due to an exception being thrown that I wasn't even aware of - the stack trace was more than enough to fill the output buffer and cause the deadlock.
    You have several options. One, you could replace the System.out and System.err with PrintStream's backed up by (ie. on top of) BufferedOutputStream's that have large buffers (multi-K) that in turn are backed up by the original out and err PrintStream's. You would use System.setErr() and System.setOut() very early (static initializer block) in the startup of your class. The problem is that you are still at the mercy of code that may call flush() on these streams. I suppose you could implement your own FilterOutputStream to eat any flush requests...
    Another solution if you just don't care about the output is to replace System.out and System.err with PrintStreams that write to /dev/nul. This is really easy and efficient.
    The other tried and true approach is to start two threads in the main process each time you start a process. These will simply consume anything that is emitted through the stdout and stderr pipes. These would die when the streams close (i.e. when the process exits). Not pretty, but it works. I'd be worried about the overhead of two additional threads per external process except that processes have such huge overhead (considering you are starting a JVM) that it just won't matter. And it's not like the CPU is going to get hit much.
    If you do this frequently in your program you might consider using a worker thread pool (see Doug Lea's Executor class) to avoid creating a lot of fairly short-lived threads. But this is probably over-optimizing.

  • EPMA 11.1.2 Essbase Hangs at status waiting for Update

    I know that in 11.1.1.3 there were issues deploying an essbase cube from EPMA, 11.1.2 however claims to be able to do this, but I am having a problem getting the cube deployed.
    I am on 64-Bit Windows 2008, all hyperion products are version 11.1.2 with SQL backend.
    I can validate a simple cube just fine from EPMA.
    I can create cubes in EAS.
    I however cannot deploy a simple cube from EPMA. I have checked all conditions on permissions and followed the guidelines.
    The essbase application is registering to Shared Services (thus I can make sure the permissions are Provisioned).
    The system gets stuck at "Waiting for Status Update..." it will remain at that level (50%) without ever updating. I have changed the awproperties file to time out after 45 minutes. I am not seeing any errors recorded in any of the logs to indicate what problem is going on.
    I need some suggestions as to where to look to force some form of error logs that will give me some clue to the next errors I need to deal with. Or some advice from anyone that has experienced this issue. This is an essbase cube not a planning application. I have EPMA HFM Applications, as well as FCM, FDM deployed on the same foundation without issue.
    The only issue I can find close to this is a Planning deploy with problems about JVM size but nothing about Essbase application JVMs.
    Any ideas?

    Is this an essbase only application? It seems like the property is defaulting to stored and then flipping the initial stored member to shared because Essbase isn't interpreting the deployment correctly. I would try using ShareData as the datastorage property (I think that is the correct spelling). Also, I believe the correct way to set IsPrimary is Y/N and not 0/1.
    If that did not work I would try the following in this order:
    1 - I would first extract the dimension in question using the file generator and confirm that the properties are indeed correct.
    2 - If they were correct. I would toggle the dimension from shared->local->shared. EPMA is still a little nutty and this will fix a fair amount of issues as it will 'refresh' the application's version of the dimension. I would then deploy
    3 - deploy from EPMA->Planning only (no essbase creation), then deploy to essbase separately after ensuring the property represents itself in planning. If it is essbase only - create the outlnie instead of refresh.
    4 - create a duplicate app in EPMA and deploy the copy of the app - and see if it has the same problem
    Try that and see how it goes.

  • Runtime.exec() hangs on solaris 10, deadlock in soft_delete_session ?

    Hi,
    In my application sometimes Runtime.exec calls hangs for ever.
    The pstack of java process is at the end of the post. It seems like there is a deadlock in soft_delete_session.
    Does anyone know of any java/os patch we can apply to fix this issue?
    I will really appreciate any tips to get over this issue.
