Essbase Netezza ODBC Linux
Hi,
Has anyone configured and successfully connected to Netezza from Essbase? I have installed the Netezza ODBC driver on my Essbase Server and have modified the $ARBORPATH/bin/.odbc.ini file to include the Netezza datasources. I have tested the connection with isql -v mydsn myusername mypassword and it says connected. However when I open a SQL in EAS and try to retrieve I get the following error
ODBC Layer Error: [HY000] ==> [Server and/or port attributes are empty]
Any Suggestions please? We have other datasources defined and are able to connect to them successfully. Don't know what I am doing wrong. Thanks for your time in advance.
Thanks,
Ted.
Hello Ted,
the first question is if this is supported.
Oracle has an MS Excel sheet as Support Matrix. Check this for the version you have. Like 11.1.2.x Non-Oracle DBs tab: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/oracle-hyperion-epm-system-certific-131801.xls
I see Netezza is supported for Essbase Studio, Interactive Reporting (former BRIO), and Production Reporting (former BRIO).
I think this also applies to your version.
A different route would be
an export as flat file and load this into Netezza.
an export into a different database which is supported and from there into Netezza.
Regards,
Philip Hulsebosch.

Installing Essbase Server on Linux, Other essbase components on windows.
Hello all,
We are planning to upgrade from 11.1.1.4 to 11.1.2.2. We have just the essbase server installed on linux and other essbase components like Essbase Administration Services, essbase integration services, provider services installed on Windows. My question is how do I go about gathering files to install just the Essbase Server on Linux and other Components on Windows. I have gone through the Media Pack doc for Windows 2008 64(on which we plan to install the other essbase components). In that if I click on the files needed for essbase(listed as essbase plus) it gives me all the files needed to install essbase components.Which means(correct me if am wrong) on a server where am planning to install just essbase components like Provider services, Essbase Admin Services and provider services it gives me the files needed for Essbase server as well, which I donot need. So how do I go about accomplishing this. Or are there any other ways to achieve what am trying to do.
Thanks,
Ted.Awesome, thats what I thought, so in that case, if I want to install Essbase server on Linux, I have to download the essbase files for linux and select only the essbase server while installing, and if I want to install essbase components on windows, I have to download the same set of files but for Windows OS and select to install only the essbase components that I need. Is that right?
Thanks,
Ted. -
Hi Experts,
Very quick question for you all !!!
Can we have Essbase studio to build Essbase application on Linux??
Which environment is better for EPM system, Windows or Linux??
--Thanks in advance--I want to run below products on based on your opinion...
Oracle Hyperion Shared Services

Instantclient-odbc-linux-ia64-10.2.0.1-20051213.zip
Hi,
One month ago in OTN there was a Link to the file
instantclient-odbc-linux-ia64-10.2.0.1-20051213.zip (26,662 bytes) (cksum -3623609500).
I found that link under http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
Platform: Linux Itanium
-> Version 10.2.0.1
Now it has disappeared. I really need that file. Please offer that link again!
Best regards
RalfNov 2, 2006. I'm adding this hoping it helps someone else in the future. I asked this question to Oracle Support. Their response:
QUESTION
========
Customer is planning to upgrade from 10.2.0.1 and 10.2.0.2. Customer is running ASM ,so customer is asking do they need to apply Patch 4547817 on Database Home or to ASM home as well.
ANSWER
======
No. You dont need to apply Patch 4547817 on ASM home.You should apply Patch 4547817 on Database Home only. You dont need to apply Patch to ASM home. You are going to upgrade database from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.2. Database can be on 10.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.2 but ASM cant be.

Issue in 11.1.2 Essbase configuration on Linux 5.5 64Bit - Config hangs
Hi Experts,
I am trying to do a fresh install and configure of EPM 11.1.2 in a distributed environment:
1. Oracle database version 11.20as repository on Linux server 1(linux 5.5, 64 bit) installed and working fine.
2. I installed and configured HSS on a Windows 2008 server SP1 64 bit - configured following: common settings, database,OCM,deploy to Application Server - Success. and I am able to open the HSS front end and check users,groups etc.
Now, I installed Essbase server,EAS server,ES server,EIS server on Linux server 2(5.5,64 bit).
The Problem is: When I am configuring Linux server 2(All the above mentioned Essbase components) -
Configurator asks for "Previously configured SS database"- I provide the details
next -> it asks for ES,EAS database schema -> I provide the details
next -> asks for weblogic domain information -> 2 options there -> I choose- > Deploy to an existing domain -> All the required info was already there(Windows server above)
BUT, when I click "next" -> the screen just Hangs and does not go anywhere. I waited for 1 hr and nothing happened.
So, I cancelled it and started the config again, but again the same issue.
the message on the linux server console are:
"HBR Configuration has not been initialized. Make sure you have logged in sucessfully and there are no exceptions in the HBR log file.
ConfigurationManager not available"
and No logs are generated under /oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/diagnostics/logs/config
any help on this will be greatly appreciated!!
this is a bit urgent ..please reply.
thanks,
AnkitCan we even have the following landscape?
1. HSS,OHS,Weblogic server,workspace - On a Windows 2008 server
2. Essbase server,EIS server,EAS server,EIS server - on a Linux server
3. Oracle database on another linux server.
my questions is, can we have the installation and configuration done considering the OS (wid and Linux), as described in points 1&2 above.
I guess I read somewhere, that all the web applications can be deployed to either all windows or to all Linux OS servers? - Is it correct? -

Netezza ODBC on 64 bit Windows 7
After some help here :
With a client, I've got nzodbcsetup.exe which is always installing 64 bit drivers, No good to me as Im running OBIEE locally and need to install 32 bit drivers.
Does anybody know If I need a 32-bit only ODBC installer or can I specify something when installing to force a 32 bit install ?
Weird thing is, its the same download as the other developers are using on OK on their 32 bit machines, just my laptop is installing as 64 bit ?
Is it likely the install file would handle both 32 bit and 64 bit installs ? BTW its a 44mb exe !
Should I be asking for a 32 bit only installer?PS CS4 does not support dual cards (or dual GPU cards) so the other card in the case is not being used.
Set up is simple:

ATI 5870 with 9.11 drivers
PS CS4 Extended 11.0.1 update

Hi,
I seem to have a big problem with an application I've made.
The application connects to a Oracle Database, fills the database with arround 1GB of information. Once the database is filled my application launches a series of queries to test performance.
My problem is when working with Oracle 11 in Linux (Fedora and Oracle Enterprise Linux). Apparently I can't seem to get past the database filling process. The free memory vanishes quite fast, eaten up between my application proces' and Oracle's. Now, I know the problem is not with my application because the same code works perfectly in the following databases:
Windows:
- Oracle 10R2
- Oracle 11g
- PostgreSQL 8.3
- MySQL 5.1
- MySQL 6-alpha
- SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
Linux:
- PostgreSQL 8.3
- MySQL 5.1
- MySQL 6-alpha
My application actually connects to the database and starts executing the inserts successfully. It's just that at some point the memory gets filled up, pretty quickly actually. I've watched the through vmstat. The first one to fall is the free memory, then follows the cache memory. And then it starts filling up swap. When it reaches to 2GB of used swap the behavior differs with the Linux Distribution: Fedora Core 8 crashes horribly, in Oracle Enterprise Linux at some point my application's process goes to "sleep" and I seem to still be able to do other things.
To connect to the database I use the [OTLv4 library|otl.sourceforge.net]. One might think that my problem is with OTL, but I use the same OTL in all those cases, and unless it's an issue between Oracle in Linux and OTL I don't think it's an OTL issue.
Can anyone push me in some direction ?
Thanks.Well, you seem to have a memory leak in your application, assuming nothing else is running. Check out the top(1) program; you can get it to sort the displayed processes according to how much %MEM (percent of memory) they are using. First entry is the culprit.
The best way I've found to locate a memory leak is to run your program using valgrind(1). This tool runs your application in a virtual CPU built in to valgrind(1). It can detect tons of different memory usage issues, from using an un-initialized variable to leaked memory.
Of course, you may not have a memory problem. Does you program generate huge bursts of I/O or is the I/O more evenly paced? Kernel I/O backlog can consume memory quickly. While your application is running, open two more windows. In one, run the command:
$ watch -n3 -d cat /proc/meminfo
and in the other:
$ watch -n3 -d cat /proc/slabinfo
Try to figure out what memory usage is steadily increasing; that can tell us if the app is leaking or the I/O channels just can't keep up.
Hope this gives you some ideas about how to proceed. -
Dear all,
I'm trying to use the linux32 odbc driver provided with the instant client. I follow the instructions provided, ODBC_IC_Readme_Linux.html:
1) I unzip instantclient-basic-linux32*zip, instantclient-odbc-linux32*.zip
2) I run odbc_install.sh
3) I add to LD_LIBRARY_PATH the directory where libsqora.so.10.1 is
I don't understand what I have to do thereafter... I should set the TNS_ADMIN variable, but in the instant client installation there is no tnsnames.ora file.
Indeed if I try to connect to the DB with the unixODBC utility isql, I get the error:
[S1000][unixODBC][Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12162: TNS:net service name is incorrectly specified
[ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect
Any suggestion?
Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Andrea ParentiI found the solution to the puzzle.
The "TWO_TASK" environment variable had to be
defined, and to be equal to the connectidentifier
defined in the tnsnames.ora file.
Hope it can help somebody else.
Cheers,
AndreaTHANK YOU! I was having the same problem, and your
solution fixed it.
Where the heck did TWO_TASK come from??? Where did
you find the documentation on that? I searched for
information, but there was no definitive webpage
defining its use.Hi,
indeed I didn't find the description of TWO_TASK in Oracle documentation, but on the web (mainly searching with google), after many unsuccessful attempts.
Some explanation about the TWO_TASK variable is in the Ask Tom website, http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:89412348059

Hi All,
We have OBIEE installed on RH Linux server. On the same server we have the Netezza ODBC CLI installed.
So I set up the ODBC connection from OBI to Netezza and build a test rpd.
Everything seemed to work fine with very simple queries. Just querying one table for example.
However, once I started doing more complex reports in answers, the OBI server started to crash.
Symptoms would be I would create the answers report and try to look at the results. After a few seconds I'd get an error message like this...
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW). [Error Details|javascript:void(null)]
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred.
[nQSError: 12010] Communication error connecting to remote end point: address = LOCALHOST; port = 9703. (HY000)
And the SQL at the bottom of course.
Then, I'd log out and try to log back in and I'd get this error...
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLDriverConnectW). [Error Details|javascript:void(null)]
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC
State: 08004. Code: 10092. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: 08004] [nQSError: 10092] The Oracle BI Server is not currently running.
Cannot connect to server machine (08004)
And I'd have to bounce the OBI services to get things working again. If I built reports off of any other area that connected to Oracle DBs (via OCI) there was no crash and no problem.
So basically, I've got an intermittent problem of crashes somehow related to using ODBC connection.
Anyone else seen this?
EWish I could give myself points. Oh well.
Our setup is Netezza DB server with Netezza 3.5.
OBI RH Linux ES4 server with Netezza ODBC Client 3.51 and Data Direct (provided by Netezza) already installed.
The reason for this problem is that OBI is not certified to use the Netezza ODBC Linux Driver 3.51.
OBI is certified only through the Netezza ODBC Linux 3.1.4 Driver.
So here's the steps I used to solve my problem. Hope this helps someone else out there.
This solution assumes you have the most recent versions of the Netezza Linux ODBC Client and Data Direct ODBC Administrator (32v51) installed already.
<ul><li>Telnet into the OBI/Netezza Client box.</li>
<li>su to the Netezzaa user.</li>
<li>In Netezza users home directory create a file .odbc.ini and .odbcinst.ini.</li>
<li>Include contents in these according to Netezza's guidance. My examples are at the bottom of this post.</li>
<li>Exit from Netezza user and su into OBI user.</li>
<li>Make sure the .profile or .bash_profile of the OBI user contains references to the Netezza Home Directory on the same server and the Netezza HOST where the Netezza DB resides.</li>
<li>Something like this should be in the profile...</li>
</ul>
bq. bq. {color:#000080}+NZ_DIR=/opt/app/netezza+ \\ + export NZ_DIR+{color} \\ {color:#000080}+NZ_HOST=stdwpprnz1+{color} \\ {color:#000080}+export NZ_HOST+{color}
<ul><li>Also make sure that in the OBI user's profile LD_LIBRARY_PATH there is a reference to *${NZ_DIR}/lib*.</li>
<li>And that the PATH contains a reference to *${NZ_DIR}/bin*.</li>
<li>Shut down all OBI processes.</li>
<li>Copy the .odbc.ini and .odbcinst.ini you created earlier from the Netezza user's home dir to the home dir of the OBI user.
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+cp $NZ_HOME/.odbc.ini $HOME/+{color}</li>
<li>{color:#000080}+cp $NZ_HOME/.odbcinst.ini $HOME/+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Navigate to $OracleBI_HOME/setup
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+cd $OracleBI_HOME/setup+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Backup the original odbc.ini and user.sh files.
<ul><li>+{color:#000080}cp odbc.ini odbc.ini.orig{color}+</li>
<li>+{color:#000080}cp user.sh user.sh.orig{color}+</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Open odbc.ini in an editor such as vi.
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+vi odbc.ini+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>In the [ODBC Data Sources|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/] section add the same reference you placed in the same location in .odbc.ini file in Netezza.</li>
<li>Then below add a section with all the details just like in the .odbc.ini file in Netezza.</li>
<li>Save and close.</li>
<li>Now open user.sh in an editor such as vi.
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+vi user.sh+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Edit the file for content. See my example below.</li>
<li>Save and close.</li>
<li>su to the Netezza user.</li>
<li>Go into $Netezza_HOME/lib</li>
<li>Remove the libnzsqlodbc3.so symbolic link pointing to libnzodbc.so
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+rm libnzsqlodbc3.s+o{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Rename original libnzodbc.so to libnzodbc.so.orig
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+mv libnzodbc.so libnzodbc.so.orig+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>FTP to [ftp://ntzftp.netezza.com/Releases/3.1.4/]</li>
<li>Get the file cli.package.tar.z</li>
<li>Note: The FTP site requires a username/password provided by Netezza via a ticket through their support site</li>
<li>Unpack cli.package.tar.z to reveal cli.package.tar</li>
<li>Unpack cli.package.tar to reveal a set of files one of which is clientsw.3.1.4.tar</li>
<li>Unpack clientsw.3.1.4.tar and go into the revealed lib directory</li>
<li>Copy the libnzsqlodbc3.so found there to $Netezza_HOME/lib</li>
<li>Create a new symbolic link pointing libnzodbc.ini to the libnzsqlodbc3.so just copied in
<ul><li>{color:#000080}+ln -s libnzsqlodbc3.so libnzodbc.so+{color}</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>su to OBI user and restart OBI processes</li>
</ul>
Any issues with using fields of any sort should now be gone.
Example of my files (some entries changed for security reasons):
Example of .odbc.ini in both Netezza user's home and Oracle user's home...

Data services on Linux to MS SQL ODBC connection
We have DS 4.1 SP2 running on Linux and trying to connect to MS SQL database via odbc. The admin guide tells you to modify the ds_odbc.ini file with an entry like this:
[test_Microsoft_SQL_SERVER]
Driver = <install_location>/lib/libodbc.so
RebrandedLib = TRUE
where install location is location of datadirect ODBC driver. But the problem is there is no libodbc.so in this library. There is a libodc.a file there instead.
Secondly, it also tells us to modify the file referenced by $ODBCINI with the following entry. In my case, ODBCINI also references to ds_odbc.ini under /dataservices/bin folder !!. Also, below it tells you to enter the /lib/DAmsssxx.so file location. But there is no such file under datadirect/lib folder. There is a DAsql25.so instead.
[test_Microsoft_SQL_SERVER]
Driver=<install_location>/lib/[DA][DD]msssxx.so
Description=DataDirect <current version number> SQL Server Wire Protocol
AlternateServers=
AnsiNPW=Yes
ConnectionRetryCount=0
ConnectionRetryDelay=3
Database=<database_name>
EnableQuotedIdentifiers=1
HostName=<SQL_Server_host>
LoadBalancing=0
LogonID=
Password=
PortNumber=<SQL_Server_server_port>
QuotedId=No
ReportCodePageConversionErrors=0
DriverExpirationBehavior=1
What should I do ? which file do I need to modify exactly and with which library ?? I don't have to modify the odbc.ini file at all ??
Do I need to install the Data direct drivers first ?? if so, how ?
Thanks
BVHi,
ODBC connectivity from your machine will not help as the connectivity to SQL Server will be established from the job server.
On the connectivity test, can you please check with your Linux admin. You can also refer to the following link for some details.
Links:
http://www.easysoft.com/developer/interfaces/odbc/linux.html
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Odbc
Can you please check the following link. this is specific to ODBC connectivity for Linux based job server.
Links:
http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/EIM/ODBC+connections+from+a+Linux+%28or+UNIX%29+jobserver
The below is for SQL server based connectivity from Linux.

Setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Essbase
Hi all,
I am trying to retrieve data directly from Essbase into SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) by setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Essbase.
I read this document in the below link and I was convinced that I could use ODBC to connect to Essbase, but our data administrator says that Essbase is an OLAP database and can NOT use ODBC.
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/esb_sqlint.pdf
I am a SAS programmer, but I have no background in technical configuration, so I was wondering if someone can help me if it is really possible or not to connect to Essbase using ODBC.
If it is possible, I have a follow up question...
I followed this link below to do a set up and did so successfully before the actual step to add a new data source to ODBC driver.
I should be able to select the TNS Service Name from the drop down list. This name will be that which I named in the TNSNAMES.ora file’s Alias = section, but I don’t see this option…
It would be great if someone knows why I do not see this option populated under drop-down in the screenshot.
Setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Data Source | Ten Six Consulting1) As I recall, the problem of returning 0 is caused either by an outdated version of the ODBC driver or of the MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). Updated versions of the ODBC driver are available here on OTN and updated versions of the MDAC are available at <http://www.microsoft.com/data>.
2) Versioning-
To determine the version of the Oracle8 ODBC driver you should be using, simply match up the first three digits of the ODBC driver version and the Oracle client version (see chart Mr. Oehl posted). The 8.1.5.6 ODBC driver should go on an 8.1.5.x.x system, the 8.1.6.1 ODBC driver should go on an 8.1.6.x.x system. If you have an Oracle7 client, you'll need one of the version 2.5x Oracle7 ODBC drivers.
Any ODBC driver should connect with any Oracle database. No need to match anything up there. You can determine the version of the database you're connected to by calling the ODBC function SQLGetInfo with the InfoType SQL_DBMS_VER.
A little elaboration on version numbers
- Oracle versions are generally 5 digits (i.e. 8.0.5.2.4, 8.1.5.1.1). The versions that you get on CD's are generally (always?) x.x.x.0.0 versions (i.e. 8.1.5.0.0, 8.1.6.0.0). The last two digits are incremented by periodic patchkit releases <ftp://oracle-ftp.oracle.com/server/patchsets/wgt_tech/server/windowsNT/>
- ODBC drivers must report versions in 4 parts, each part having 2 digits (i.e. 8.01.05.05). Since we're lazy about typing extra 0's, we simplify this and just refer to the 8.1.5.5 ODBC driver.
- The 8.1.5.x ODBC driver is built with the client libraries that ship with Oracle 8.1.5.x.x, the 8.1.6.x ODBC driver is built with the client libraries that ship with Oracle 8.1.6.x.x, etc. This is why I said above that you need to match the first 3 version numbers between Oracle client and ODBC driver to determine which to use.
I hope this is more enlightening than confusing...

Sybase iq data source for essbase
Hi,
We're trying to build cube from sybase IQ. Since I cannot find a specific SYBASE IQ driver, i used the sybase driver (ARase22.so) to create a SYBASE IQ data source in the odbc.ini file.
Below is the error message I got when tried to do a query using the above data source from a rules file: ODBC Layer Error: [57] ==> [[DataDirect][ODBC 20101 driver][20101]SQL Anywhere Error -143: Column '@@maxpagesize' not found].
Our system info: Essbase 931 on linux, Sybase IQ 15.1
Can anyone please advise.
thanks
YWI remember having used Sybase(as a SQL source) for Essbase in UNIX, few years ago.
Not sure if it's any different from Sybase IQ you are referring to? Are you stuck up some where?

Issue with Essbase - SQL Interface in UNIX box
Hi All,
One of our customer is facing an issue while trying to connect to the Oracle datasource from Essbase version 9.0.1.0.00 in a 64 bit UNIX box. He is using Oracle wired protocol for SQL interface.
Customer has tried the below and getting the below error:
1) Ran the nst-sql.sh file.
2) Edited the odbc.ini file and the .profile file with the required dsn information.
3) From the console selected the open SQL option and received the following error " There are no datasources defined. Please create one to continue"
I have attached the odbc.ini file and the .profile file for your reference.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Bharathi Raja

After editing the files you mentioned, did you restart the essbase services?
At the very least, did you exit EAS, then restart EAS? (I don't remember which one of these will do it.) If your entries are correct, then one of these should get the essbase user to 'see' the odbc connection.
Also, it might help to remove extraneous entries in the .odbc.ini file, kind of difficult to read thru all of that.
