Essbase Prompts

I noticed a weird behaviour when creating prompts out of essbase generation columns in obiee. I have an Org dimension which is across 5 generations. So In my report i have the org generation starting at Gen2 which goes all the way down to Gen5. So i have a prompt with 5 gen columsn gen1, gen2...gen5.So when i select some members in the prompts from gen1 to gen5 itz giving NO results. how ever it shows results in the report if i use a normal drill down instead of the prompts. So even it has results for the selected prompt combination it gives no results. But in the drill down it shows results.
Prompt columns: gen3, gen4, gen5
Report columsn: gen3, dollars
filters in the report: gen3, gen4, gen5 are prompted
so drill down from gen3 wrks fine if i do the same selection in the prompts itz giving No results. Kindly Advice...

In the Physical Layer, uncheck the two check boxes for Organization Member that says
1. Default member type ALL
2. Use unqualified member name for better performance.
This should allow you to apply filters at any level to the cube members.

Essbase connection - POV in Financial Reporting prompts missing

Hi,
I'm connecting to Essbase using Financial Reporting, this report has 3 POV's. When I go to Workspace and run that report, I only see one POV. When log in as someone else, I see the 3 POV's expected. Does anyone ever encountered this? Does anyone know how to fix this?

I had a similiar problem, but really not sure how close it is compared to yours.
My issue was, for a old report,I had 3 "user point of view" dimensions set up, but when I ran them on workspace, I had none of the user POV prompts coming up for selection. I identified that, the user point of view isn't working or not recognized by the report. so below is what i did to get them to work.
1. Navigated to "Dimension Layout" and moved the "user point of view" dimensions to "Pages". Saved it.
2.Then again reverted back the same dimension back to "user point of view" dimension.[Just did this to get rid of the report memory having the user point of view dimensions]
3.Unchecked Grid point of view [Incase if it is checked]
4.Navigated to Task->User Point of View, and for the 3 dimensions in the user point of view, select "Member from List" and for each dimension give more than one selection[ :) ], like sample below.
Dimension: report viewers may select Choices List
Hsp_Audits A Member from List Hsp_Rate_InputValue, Hsp_Rate_USD
Save the report, Try running the report from Workspace. This way i got all my user point of view prompts while running them in workspace.

Can I change user name after running essbase from command prompt??

Hi,
I run essbase from command prompt and during this activity I was asked to give user name and password, but by mistake I put wrong user name and now wolud like to chanege it.
Is it possible??

It worked,
now I was able to connect to easbase from planning, I ve created sample aplication and initialize it but cannot connect to Eas to download data for sample application. After I run the validation there is now only one error displayed:
Essbase / Essbase Administration Services
FAILED Web App Availability of web application context (POL-MPIKULSKI 10080, eas)
Error: com.hyperion.cis.utils.BadResponseCodeException: Bad response code: 404
Recommended Action: Check application is started
I tried to start the eas from start>programs>epm system>essbase>administration services>start administration services(java embeded) but it didnt help.
can I start in in different way??

Hello ,
You can check the login through the Essbase command utility.
go to command prompt . type - essmsh
then you will be able to see MaxL prompt
enter the command login username password;
you can use this utility to load data , import export running calc etc...

List values from different prompts into one.

Hi All,
We have OBIEE 11g and building Analysis out of Essbase cube. Here is our Requirement we need to build a Dashboard prompt which shows values from different tables.
All these tables belong to one dimension and this has about 10 tables in it. So the prompt which we build should pick specific values from each table.
I know we can build prompt for every table which we will end up with 10 prompts which doesn't look good so we need to show all the values of these ten prompts in single drop down (One Prompt)which we can use for refreshing the dashbaord.
Say we have table names as Gen1.Organisation, Gen2.Organisation,.........Gen10.Organisation

are there any dependancies on the selections e.g if you pick Gen1.Organisation1 does this mean that you can only pick Gen2.OrgA or Org B?
if there are no dependancies and you want all possible combinations across ten tables then you are looking at one huge drop down list !!

11.1.2 essbase upgrade not recognizing application files location

Hi all
I am upgrading an essbase database (Planning) from 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.2,
I trying to configure 2 essbase servers (original 11.1.1.3 and new 11.1.2) running on 1 physical server using different ports and filesystems
Following all the steps in the Deployment guide in Preparing Essbase Data for Upgrading,
I ran all the steps in the Manual file transfer instructions to copy from source machine to target machine.
I have started the steps in rehosting the essbase applications,
- Completed enable lookup by cluster name:
- I completed the server to cluster script on the HSS box (updateEssbaseServer )
when i went to run EssbaseUpdateEssbaseServer one of the planning databases did not update i got this error

looking in the logs i found that it was trying to go to the prior location of the 11.1.1.3 instance and not the new location of the 11.1.2 instance

I followed these instructions and specified a different directory when running the staging tool, the script was empty, i do not believe it should be, it should contain mapping info to update essbase.sec, which it did not
On the Configure Essbase Server page, for Full path to application location (ARBORPATH), specify the location of the existing or replicated Essbase data.
Note:
If you replicated data to a new machine, and if you selected Differently-named disk volumes, table spaces, or ARBORPATH on source and target or Consolidated disk volumes or tablespaces on target by exporting data during data replication, you must run a script immediately after configuring Essbase to update the Essbase security file to reflect the disk volumes on the upgraded system. The Essbase Staging Tool provides a script to update the settings in the security file (essbase.sec):
Start the Essbase Server and EPM System services. Navigate to ARBORPATH/app on the machine that is hosting the upgraded Essbase Server and run the following script using MaxL:
%ARBORPATH%/bin/startMaxl.bat -u userName editagtsec.msh
where userName is the Administrator user name to connect to the upgraded Essbase server. The script prompts you to enter the password.
Note:
editagtsec.msh could be empty in some scenarios. For example, when you launched the Staging Tool, the Staging Tool reports on existing volumes. If no volumes are listed, editagtsec.msh is empty.

Problem in Obiee 11g when using Essbase as a data source.

I imported Essbase objects into RPD. I would like to build an report analyzing by "City" (e.g. HK) and "Channel" (e.g. Bar, Restaurant). However, this dimension combined as one dimension in Essbase. Is there any methods to separate one dimension into two in RPD? Or, is there any trick can I used to complete this task?
Btw, I have tried to duplicate the whole set of Essbase objects in RPD. Then, join the copy to the original object by using the dimension key in both object. For example, "Customer" in original object is joining to "Customer" in copied object. However, an error prompted out when I run the report by dragging the dimension and a "Fact" measure into it.
The error message as follow:

Is there any method to join an external table to Essbase object in RPD? For example, external table contain (Code, Description, Postal Code) and Essbase table contain only (Code, Description). How can I use the "Postal Code" to a report as well?

It appears that I can view in Excel through the RPD when I am accessing the RPD in offline mode. If I try to access through online mode it just says "Connection Failed".
I also tried viewing the data through Answers but received the following error:

Sequence will not validate with run time prompts in business rules

I am in Hyperion Planning v 1.1.1.3, with Workforce initialized. I am creating a sequence of business rules. The rules use run time prompts within them and validate when used on their own. However, when I insert them in a sequence the sequence will not validate, apparently due to the run time prompts.
The sequence returns the error: Cannot calculate. Essbase Error(1200323): Error parsing formula for [FIX STATEMENT] (line 7): expression expected after [(].
Line 7 in the business rule is as follows:
FIX ([rtpYear],[rtpScenario],[rtpVer],[rtpCC],[rtpBU],[rtpEmp])
The problem is not isolated to this business rule, it occurs with any rule I try.
Can sequences function with run time prompts in the included business rules?

I have figured out that if any rtp is hidden in the business rule, the sequence will not validate. Is this expected behavior for sequences?
Additionally, hiding the variables in the sequence has no effect if the variables are not hidden in the rule. When launched from a menu in a web form, the user is prompted for values for all variables (except for the Execution Database Name) although they are prepopulated based on the members in the POV, Page, etc. Is this also expected behavior?
I also find that it won't validate if "Merge launch variables" is selected (I have included rules associated with different plan types and with different dimensionality, so this may be expected). The user is prompted to provide values for every variable in each rule in the sequence, many of them duplicates (though, again, they are prepopulated based on members in the form).

OBIEE - new logical colums fails when sourced from Essbase

I created a new logical column by using locate , substring etc which works fine by itself. Wheen I use that DIM value against a measure , i get these messages

Its true that this modified member does not exist in the essbase . the original member has 'External_aggregate' . If I change the new logical column LOB to 'SUM' .it works but then I have to change all measures and then OBIEE never returns any rows . Probably it takes fior ever to the sum again
Question : Is there a way we can tell OBIEE/Essbase that this modified column is for display only or prompts etc ..but the real filter or sum must be done on the original member name

Error in Essbase 11.1.1.3 Installation.

Hi Gurus,
I have sucessfully installed the Essbase 11.1.1.3 & when i am trying to do the shared services configuration i am getting an error like " Login failed for user dbadmin. User is not associated with a trusted sql server connection".
I have installed the essbase 11.1.1.3 & Sql Server 2005 in other systems and it was working fine. This is the first time that i am getting such error. Kindly let me know what should be done.

This is common SQL server issue. Let me copy the solution directly.
Start Enterprise Manager.
1. Expand Microsoft SQL Servers, and then expand SQL Server Group.
2. Right-click the server that you want to change to SQL Server and Windows authentication, and then click Properties.
3. In the SQL Server Properties dialog box, click the Security tab, click SQL Server and Windows, and then click OK.
4. When you are prompted to re-start the SQL Server service, click Yes.
Note If you use SQL Server 2005, use SQL Server Management Studio instead of Enterprise Manager to change the security authentication mode.

Can't start Foundation Services on Windows XP, Essbase 11.1.2

Installation and & configuration were fine and everything worked for a while. Machine was rebooted. After that, I tried : "EPM System Start" from start menu, but it fails starting foundation services. I tried starting only Foundation services ... It is the same. In the starter log I can see:

I need to run Admin Services Console & essmsh. If I try to run Admin Service Console it has error: "Could not connect to admin server" and after thae "EAS server not available". How can I start Essbase? After reboot, I can see only Hyperion Integration service started - all others not (they are set to Automatic start). Also, I see ESSBASE.exe process and couple of opmn.exe ...
Does anything else has to be started before starting EPM System start script? I really appreciate any help!

Can't you install Essbase 11.1.1.x to not use Shared Services?
From the 11.1.1.3 install guide:
If you want to install Essbase in standalone mode (not using Shared Services), you can skip the installation for Shared Services. However, you must configure the Oracle's Hyperion Shared Services Registry database. To configure the Shared Services Registry database without installing Shared Services, see “Setting Up the Shared Services Registry Without Installing Shared Services” on page 112.And from page 112:
If you want to install Essbase in standalone mode (not using Shared Services), you can skip the installation for Shared Services. However, you must still configure the Shared Services Registry database. To configure the Shared Services Registry database without installing Shared Services, you run EPM System Configurator from the command line using the –forceRegistry option. This option forces the “Shared Services and Registry Database Configuration” page to display during configuration so you can enter database details for the Shared Services Registry. EPM System Configurator populates the database with tables for the Shared Services Registry, but not for Shared Services.I'm pretty sure people are running Essbase on XP boxes. That includes EAS, and maybe APS for SmartView, and that's pretty much it.
For sure XP isn't a supported environment.

Default userid/password for Essbase 7.1.5

Hi All, I've just now upgraded to Essbase 7.1.5. At the time of installation I gave the 'NAME' as 'James Galt' and system password as 'password'. Earlier on every upgrade it used to recognize the old security file and I could login to a fresh upgrade using my old id/password. But this time it does seem to recognize the essbase.sec file. could somebody please let me know the default user-id password for version 7.1.5, so that I can atleast login and try creating some users. There's no such ting as a default user ID and password for Essbase. The system user ID and password is the one you create when you install Essbase. IF you want to reset and start from scratch, delete the essbase.sec file and launch essbase.exe from \essbase\bin. You will be prompted to enter a new user ID and password. Hint : it's not good practive to use someone's name as the system ID. BE aware of a couple of things if you do this, any users, filters, applications, etc you had we'll be gone and have to be re-created. If this was an upgrade from the previous version, upon install completion, you would run the essbase.exe and it would prompt you for the existing password. If it's not working, chances are you are using the wrong password. Remember, the system password might not be the same as the admin password. For instance at my location, when I did the upgrade I entered the admin password and it didn't work. I asked everyone and they said that was the only password. After digging little deeper I found that a couple of years ago it was determined the passwords were too generic so they changed them. While they changed the admin password, the system password stayed the same. After digging, I found out what the old password was and sure enough I was able to fire it up. If you don't have existing apps and users to worry about then just start fresh, but if you want to salvage what you had, then you will need to find the right password. One more thing, if you have Essbase running as a service, disable the service and run it in console mode until you get this straightened out. HTH

Hyperion Reports 2.6 updating substituion variables in a prompt

I'm running into a problem where I update a substitution variable on my Essbase server and then go to pull a report in Hyperion Reports v2.6.The report is set up to prompt the user to choose a member from the Time dimension, I have the default set to use the substitution variable 'cur_week'.The problem is when I update the variable on Essbase and pull the report, the report defaults to the old variable value. The only way I can get it to display the new value is to restart the Report Server.Has anyone experienced this? Do you know of a way to work around this?Thanks in advance

Decided to go with a batch script to restart the service on Report Server. Combined with a MaxL script to update the subvariables. Run both back to back and it seems to work.Not the ideal solution, but as long as I don't kick off while a report is running, it seems like it will work.

Using run-time prompts in BRs for Planning 11.1.1

Hi to all!
I want to create a run-time prompt for periods for which the calculation is to be done in my business rule. So via Tools>Variables I created a global variable of MemberRange type, then I inserted this variable in the Fix statement of my business rule in Calculation Manager but the validation of the rule fails stating that the BR has a run-time prompt which is not allowed. I have not found anything in the documentation on how to allow runtime prompts in a BR, so I would be very grateful for hints on how to correct it.

For global variables:
Run EAS console
Right click on your Essbase server (e.g. localhost)
Edit - Variables
Set names and values of global variables for all apps and all dbs (if you need so)
These names of global variables you can use in your BRs and CalcMngr scripts.
For local BR variables:
Run EAS
Create new BR
Go to "Variables" tab
Add local variables as "Member" type / "Run-time prompt" usage type
These names of global variables you can use in your BRs scripts.

Open BR - Global variables
Create new global variable as "Member" type / "Run-time prompt" usage type

Essbase JAPI maxl session gives NPE with import statement

Anybody know why I get a NPE from the Java API when trying to use the IEssMaxlSession to do an import? Here's my code snippet. I've verified the session work using the simpler maxl command commented out below. I also know the import syntax is OK at the maxl prompt. Essbase Error(0) isn't the most helpful diagnostic I've come across.

This is due to the unpublished Bug 12661416: MAXL STATEMENT IMPORT DB DIMENSIONS FROM RELATIONAL DATABASE FAILS WITH JAPI. This error is not fixed in next release.
However, there is one workaround.
"As a workaround we installed Essbase client 9.3.1 on the epm11 test box, copied native libraries from 9.3.1 admin server and connected to maxl shell from the v 9.3.1 maxljni interface. This seems to work fine."
