Essbase RAM Optimization/Tuning

Hello,
I have a BSO application that is taking a heavy toll on RAM (starts with 5-6gb goes up to 13 GB and stays there until application is stopped). CPU performance is unaffected and stays less than 20%. There is a full load that takes place every 2hrs which clears, loads and calcs all the data. Sometime calculations take a long time (over an hour) that are usually done in 2-3 mins.
I have the below stats, can someone please let me know, what might be cause (or one of) from here?
Thanks

Those cache sizes look to have been set by brute force rather than testing.  The index cache is needlessly high - once it's large enough to contain the entire index there is no benefit to going higher.
The data file cache does not need to be set at all unless you're using Direct I/O instead of Buffered I/O (it probably doesn't make any difference, but I wouldn't leave it set to 4GB anyway).
Are you saying that memory usage climbs to 13GB without any activity (i.e. just start and wait)?
CALCCACHEHIGH is also at the absolute maximum permissible - if you're doing parallel calc and specifying SET CACHE HIGH you grab that much memory for every thread.
EDIT: Actually, I see now that you are using Direct I/O. Still, I'd 'start again' following the DBAG recommendations as a starting point.  Also, do you know why you have multiple  CALCPARALLEL lines in your Essbase.cfg file?  Again, the 'tuning' seems to have been the brute force 'set it all as high as it goes' approach rather than iterative testing to see where you actually get a benefit.

• Database size: optimization: tuning

Hi:
I'm using Berkeley DB as it is supplied with MacOS 10.5.6
on an intel iMac with 2G of ram. On this machine, as well as on
a more powerful machine with more memory I see the following:
I'm loading a tied hash via Perl BerkeleyDB.pm with constant-length
keys, and values that vary from 20 to 200 bytes.
Loading time is constant at about 0.9 seconds per 25,000 records
(0.6 per 25,000 on the more powerful machine)
until the dbm file reaches about 660 MB (1.2 million records).
Then there is an inflection point and loading time increases
so that at 2 million records (dbm file =710 MB) it is 33 seconds per
25,000 records. If i reduce the average size of the values of each record, the inflection
point stays constant at ~660 MB, although more records are stored.
I wonder if there are database tuning/optimization functions I should
be looking at.
Thanks
Richard Moe

There is in fact no better way than doing the real test yourself, but you can also just do the math. Start with figuring/estimating what's going to be the load of the application, how many queries are to be executed during one request/session, etcetera.

• RULE BASED OPTIMIZER TUNING

Hi all,
On one of the production server we are using RULE BASED OPTIMIZER(Its application requirement).
I have to tune this database as users are complaining about the performance.
Any tips how can I tune for a RULE BASED optimizer database.
Does the tuning statergy will remain same as like seeing execution plan for missing index, instance paramets
execpt you cant generate stats.
Regards
Umair

Hi!
There are one thing about RBO, YOU must check all long-running queryis for it's
execution plans, try find better plans and after force RBO to using it.
You can use different hints for changing eceution plans. But for tuning RBO's database you must soent a very big time, YOU must be a CBO ;)

• RAM optimization in macbook pro

hi there,
i have a 2.8 uni mbp that i just upgraded with 6g of ram. however, my system doesn't seem to use all of it. using activity monitor, i see that my system has 3.93g free. i know that my system is capable of utilizing the ram because when i stressed the system, all 6g are capable of being used. it seems like a waste to have all that ram being free. is there something i can do to have my system use ram more?

it depends on what you are doing. OS X isn't going to use 6gb at idle or surf the web, it doesn't need it. unlike vista that can use 2Gb just to run the OS, Apple apps & the Unix based kernerl use what they need.
Video editing, rendering, Photoshop, etc will use up RAM, that's really the only reason to use that much memory.
Unless you plan on doing some heavy work, 6Gb just for OS X & surfing the web simply isn't needed nor going to be used - yet!
that may change in the future, who knows.

• Performance optimization/tuning

Hi Guys,
My Client wants to do Performance Tuning in 4.6 B Server /Database - Oracle8.0 -O/s- Aix Unix.but unfortunately they do not have SAP Support..that's why i am unable to get EARLY WATCH REPORT from SAP.
i am trying to prepare this report manually.......i just need to know is how to get the following details of the server :-
1)SAP Service Tools
2)Transaction Profile Check/ transaction by Total worKload
3)Transaction by DB load
<b>IN DB Settings</b>
1)Load Per User
2)Database Growth......
Please tell me the exact transaction Codes with relevant information... or if you guys have any Doc. then please Post.
Regards,
Rohit

1. Service Tools
They are available as part of the extended maintenance contract, I don´t know about 4.6B but you need to download the current tools from the service marketplace and install them, if you don´t have access (or your client) to the archived site for that old software because of a missing contract you´re lost.
2. + 3. + 4.
That data is available in the mentioned transaction, you need to summarize it yourself.
5.
That data is definitely available in DB02.
What you want to do will be some work, it´s not like executing the transactions, downloading to excel and copy it into a word document.

• Essbase cube optimization

Hi All,
I know a lot has been discussed on optimizing Essbase cubes and others but need to get some more guidance on the same.
Scenario:
Essbase app 11.1.2.2 with 2 dense and 6 sparse as below:
Account ~500 stored (dense)
Period ~13 stored (dense)
Fin Element ~2000 stored (sparse)
Entity ~10000 stored (sparse)
Prod ~10000 stored (sparse)
* Year, Version and Scenario are non-aggregating dimensions
Stats: Block size ~50kb and lev0 size ~400MB
The issue is that there are few monthly end calc scripts that takes more than ~3-4hrs /script to execute on the cube.
I had done the following things so far:
1- Provide custom hour glass outline: Period-Accounts-Fin Element- Prod - Entity - Yr - Version -Scenario
2- Changed few member properties
3- Optimized script
However the run time for the scripts is equal to what was earlier.
A quick question:
If I make dimension 'Fin element' as dense, block size is ~80MB. I guess 100KB is max recommended, but need to confirm on this.
Kindly guide ahead as in what else should I try ahead and do..
Regards..

Hi
This is all a little subjective....but....
Are your upper level members of dense dims dynamic or are you having to run any CALC DIM commands against them within the lengthy BR's? If you are then these will probably be responsible for a fair chunk of the time - could always pull these out and run separately to see exactly how much time they take.

• Advanced RAM Optimizer problem

Pls RIM sent me a message to download this application and there's this goldstar on my homescreen that has refused to leave. I cant even open the message in my folder, it only permits delete which doesn't remove the star and the message comes back after I restart my phone. And my battery seems to be used up at a faster rate. Please, I need your help people... Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi,
Try these steps to get rid of the yellow star:
Solution- open "messages"(not the text messages) n there u will find a notification of some application wth the same star sign(in my case it ws tarrot card reader for BB),jst click on tht and if u dnt want tht App installed then jst close it...the star sign should be gone...
Regarding Battery:
Press the BB button n keep it pressed for 2 seconds, this will show the apps that r running in background...normally apps like Home,Call records,Browser,BBM n Messages should be there, besides these if there r any other apps, close them...Apps running in background consumes battery...

• Tuning Oracle10g

Hi All,
I am learning Oracle Memory Tuning and gone through some Performance Tuning Articles. My questions are:
- Since Oracle10g has Automatic Memory Management, once we specified Max SGA and MAX PGA what we need to tune in memory?
- Where can I get tuning examples with case scenarios?
Thanks & Regards,
Danish

Hi Danish,
Since Oracle10g has Automatic Memory Management, once we specified Max SGA and MAX PGA what we need to tune in memory? My company supports hundreds of databases, and I've noticed that while this "autoimated" memory management is OK for small databases, it may not be right for shops with a large or busy system. This is because AMM is "reactive", and waits until it detects a problem before addressing it. I have an alert here about it, how AMM resise operations can cause performance issues, in some cases:
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_amm_automatic_memory_resize.htm
Oracle has an insatiable appetite for RAM, but there are diminishing marginal returns as you approach full caching.
Your goal is to give him enough RAM to hit the "sweet spot" of optimal pool sizes.
Oracle has pool advisory utilities that can assist you in this, check them out . . . .
Also, I wrote this note especially for people like you, who use AMM and want to tune RAM:
http://www.oracle-training.cc/t_amm_oracle_instance_tuning.htm
Since you are on 10g, I've collected numerous "gotchas" in 10g that you may find useful:
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_slow_performance_after_upgrade.htm
Where can I get tuning examples with case scenarios? There are literally thousands of examples on the web. I would search like this, for Oracle RAM (or SGA) tuning examples:
http://www.google.com/search?&q=oracle+ram%7Csga+tuning+example
In sum, the best way to learn how to optimize RAM is to dive-in and get your feet wet!
Hope this helps . . .

• Essbase Data Cache Full Error

Hi, All,
I am encountering an Essbase data cache full error while running some calc scripts. I have already try to set the data cache size to 800MB to 1.6GB, and index cache to around 100MB. It is quite a large BSO Essbase, with one dimension over 1000 members, another about 2500 members, and the last one about 3000 members.
I have three similar scripts and each is for different entities to aggregate on some of those dimensions.
For example, I started with unload the app/db, and run the calc script 1 for Entity1, it is successfully; However, I continue to run on calc script 2 for Entity 2, it showed the "data cache full error". However, after I unload the app/db, and then run calc script 2 again, I can have the calc scripts completed with no errors.
I am running on Essbase 11.1.1.3 on AIX platform 32-bit Essbase.
Anyone had encountered that before. Is it a problem with Essbase RAM handling, in this case?
Thanks in advance

Thank you John,
We have found that it is the entity dimension that should be responsible to this problem.
I remember we have encountered this kind of problem before when we aggregate an application with the entity dimension hierarchy mixed with shared and stored instances of the same level 0 members. To put it simple, there are three members under "Entity" dimension member, which represents different view of entity hierarchies of same level 0 members. the first one has stored level 0 entity members while the other two have shared ones. And at that time, our client added another hierarchy with shared level 0 members, but they did not put this tree under "Entity" dimension member directly, but rather put it under the first child of "Entity", which is the one with stored level 0 members.
It is a little bit confusing to describe the situation only by text. Anyway, at that time, the first hierarchy had both stored and shared instances of the same group of level 0 members. And the data cache is always full when aggregating. and after we moved the forth hierarchy to another tree so under that hierarchy the level 0 members are all shared instances, the aggregation worked flawlessly.
I wondered why this happened and consider this is related to detailed calculation logic of Essbase. May you shed some light on this topic? Thank you with all my heart!
Warm Regards,
John

• My MacBook Pro is using too much RAM.

Hello,
I have got Apple MacBook Pro 13.3” (ME865LL/A) with OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and I’ve noticed that my MacBook is using too much RAM. I'm doing nothing, I've got opened only my Google Chrome web browser and my notebook is using about 6,6 GB RAM of 8,0 GB... Have you ever had problem like my? I was reading about Memory Booster - RAM Optimizer. What do you think about that?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't use any AV software - if you just keep a watch on what you download and where it's from, you've no need for it, either.
See The Safe Mac -> Mac Malware Guide. There is some malware and adware for Macs, but no viruses (although you can pass them along to your Windows friends!).

• HFR - Data Query Optimization Settings

hi
In HFR, in a grid there are Data Query Optimization Settings, can you please help me on the settings property.
Our report fetches data using lot of attributes. When we don't use MDX setting, it fetches very fast, but the alias doesn't come.
However, when we use MDX setting, the alias comes, but the report takes lot of time to run(approx 1 min / row of data fetched)
Can you please guide on the same.
Thanks

To get best throughput in less time, what i need to do ?
Please do let me know steps to tune/optimize the sql query. Also which hint we can use on sql query to better results.
Thanks in advanced.
PMBefore you start worrying about performance tuning you should worry about the query being incorrect.
             WHERE
                 ROWNUM <= &param
                 AND   ( c_date BETWEEN &date1 AND &date2 )
                 AND c3 in (
                                             select c3
                                             from tab2
                                             where xxx='abc')
ORDER BY c1, c_date;Presumably you want to limit the number of rows with the ROWNUM predicate AFTER the ORDER BY clause is applied.
Please read this and learn how queries are actually processed, I can almost guarantee you this query is not doing what you think it is doing at present.

I have a freezing issue sometimes. I have an RAM optimizer app. And it sometimes hits to 100 mb free memory left.
Is every slot supports up to 8 GB?
How will it performance if I combine 8 GB and one of my 2 GB RAM's in total of 10 GB's.
Should I buy 2x4GB's instead for the best performance.

• MSI Forum Lock Ups

Hey guys wondering where i have been the last couple of days??...no, you guessed wrong i was not with my girlfriend (well at least no during daytime :D )
I was trying to LOGIN IN THE F*****G FORUM :O  ?(
Markoul
p.s. At least it seems now we are going to have Avatars and also we have got the old forum back  :P

Hi,
First of all thanks to all for the help, and CJLittle...LMAO !  My car is a Scooby and a nice blue paint job !  Believe it or not they assured me all this would work.. I bought it in one package and even questioned it.  Also to be fair up until then they had always been very good... shows they have no zero about 3200XP 200 fsbetc...  When I went back with the power supply and told them they changed it out and let me off on the extra money it should have been.
The crashes are as follows :-
Locks up after random amounts of time in games, sometimes dont even get to load it up at all, other times I can play 2 hours.  When the games lock up usually there is a high pitch squeal and can only get out of it by reset or power off.
I cannot install Zone Alarm Pro or Agnitum Outpost are 2 anyway (there are others) these just come up with the installer screen and hangs there, I have to go to Task Manager to close them down, unlike the lock up in games.
The cooler is the Coolermaster Jet... and the temperature is more than acceptable (right now is 44 C) so I cannot see that at all being a factor.
leds are on on the d bracket when it locks, I did not know of this function and will check it out. Thanks for that tip.
Question from me: would the 2700 RAM cause these lockups ?  I would have thought it would just not work at all ?  If this is possible then I will go and change out the RAM as tuning it down to 166 (if it is possible) does not appeal to me !  But yes it may show what the problem is.
Thanks again, will see what happens...

• Lock Ups with MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR [Resolved] thnx!

Well this is a first for me and it is driving me nucking futs !,
I have been building my own pc's for at least 10 years now and never had a problem where I have even needed to come to a forum like this.  So as I see there are some very helpful and knowledgable peeps (nice work guys) here I thought I would ask as I have read through all stickies etc... and have not actually seen an answer to the problems of locking up.  I am fast forming the opinion that this motherboard has a serious problem that MSI have not fixed yet.  Anyway here is some info on the spec and what I have tried so far :
Have checked for viruses...
Did a fresh format and re-install...
Unplugged all that is not essential to run...
Symptoms..
Cannot write files to make a DVD in any authoring program.. it locks up after about 5 minutes
Locks up in most Games, some run for 5 mins then other times run for hours
Cannot run some setup.exe files (Like Zone Alarm Pro)
Sometimes (locks up just surfing)
Microsoft Word seems to mess up a lot and have to run the repair option..

I am about seriously considering giving this board some cement legs and drowning it !  This is my first (and probably last) MSI board and cannot believe the problems so many seem to have.  Maybe best and quickest option is to do just that and go buy a decent board.
Any help much appreciated.

• Feedback for forum: WAP4410N lock ups - how we fixed!

Hi All,
Our organisation struggled for the past 12 months with 6 x WAP4410N devices in our small office environment - configured as access points, same ssid, separate channels, no interference. Our errors consisted of:
1. Random lockups, up to 3 times a day - requiring reboot to fix
2. Not passing on DHCP requests - requiring reboot to fix
3. Some wireless devices unable to ever make a successful connect
Over this 12 month period we upgraded firmware, last  being 2.0.5.3, applied tips from this forum, and also opened cases with Cisco - we ended up resorting to 4 reboots per day for each device to get some productivity out of these access points.
Start of this month we contacted Eric Moyers, Cisco Engineer who monitors this forum, who assisted with opening a new Cisco case. This case was escalated immediately, beta firmware provided and tested, feedback provided as still same failures. Cisco then provided the option of full refund on all 6 devices which we accepted - provided proof of purchase (original invoices). We then purchased 6 x WAP321  inconjunction with advice from Eric - slighly more expensive than the WAP4410N, however we could have gone with WAP121's.
10 days ago we implemented the WAP321's, configuration so simple, and have had absolutely 100% trouble free success - no lockups, dropouts, refusing connections and every wireless device we have successfully connects.
I hope this information can help those of you who struggle for resolution of WAP4410N  issues - raising a case is easy with Cisco, testing by Cisco support quick, refund painless and deployment of WAP321s simple. My management is extrememly happy with the outcome. If you want to contact Eric you will see his regular posts here and he even lists his direct email address.
Kindest regards,
Dale Bentley
