Essential apps/software?

Any essential/recommendations of apps/software from, but not limited to the App Store? i.e. Not just from the Mac App Store.
Not that my Mac is the bare bones, "just out of the box" Mac, or anything, it's just that I have had it for a while and have some good apps and what not installed, I just want some new stuff to freshen things up a bit.

Essential System Software...what is this

How do I reinstall ‘Printer Support’ only from Snow Leopard disk...it seems to have 'Essential System Software' that I can't uncheck so I cancelled the reinstall. I don't think I want to reinstall this, as my system is set up the way I want it to be, except for Library/Printers.
If you feel it's safe to reinstall 'Essential System Software', can you tell me what this does and how it affects my current applications/keychains/permissions/etc?
The original problem...My HP designjet 90 hasn't worked since installing Snow Leopard/this is a known problem. A fix was to have come with OS 10.6 update. Still not working. My attempt is to delete library/printer folder and then to reinstall from Disk, and then run update again. Anything I may be missing?

Install it. The Snow Leopard installer only replaces OS components and *does not remove or replace* anything else, such as your settings or apps. The Essentials package contains those items that are required to have a bootable system, along with most Apple applications. For a list, download Pacifist and peruse the install disc's packages.

Time Machine is one such program, although it is a recursive backup program which offers limited archive capability, based on the capacity of the backup destination, and it requires you set it up before you start editing your files. Some programs are also Versions aware, which offers a kind of restore capability by file. Again needs to be setup before you start editing.

You can contact iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
To try and stop it happening again you can turn off in-app purchases on your phone via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off'

Is there a native app/software that will get my photos all the same size?

I know how to do this with photoshop but I'm not sure if there is any Apple native app/software that will do this for me.
Lets say I have 5 photos of different sizes and I want them all the same size. I know I could reduce them all in preview but that doesn't allow me to move the photo around and cut out stuff I don't want in it. Or I could crop them in Preview but then they are not automatically all the same size.
The way it works in photoshop is: I open up a new project that is the same size I want the photos to be. Let say 900x644. Then I copy one of the photos I want in that size (lets say it somewhat bigger) and when I paste it into that blank new project that is 900x644 I can move the pasted photo around to get it so what I want to fit into that newer smaller size is there.
Is there any way to do this without special software on a regular Mac. I'm trying to help a family member who doesn't really want to buy or learn a complicated graphics program. They have iLife 11 BTW but I don't see a way to do it with iPhoto.

I'm now running OS 10.2.8 and thinking of buying a new Mac which would be loaded with 10.5 Leopard. Would my present application software be usable with 10.5, or would I have to replace all my apps software? Mainly I'm concerned about Entourage for e-mail, Microsoft Office word-processing, Epson Stylus C88 printer and Hewlett Packard Scanjet 3970 scanner. Thanks for info.

Chances are very slim that any of your apps would work since the new machines are all Intel based, so it's not just the change in OS, but the change in the actual hardware. The only apps that would run would have to be Universal Binary, and unless some of your apps are brand new, they would not run at all. Certainly you would have to buy the latest versions of MSOffice, etc.
As far as your hardware, it's unlikely that they would work properly, but they might. You would have to check with each of them to see if they have drivers for Leopard/Intel or if they are natively supported. Leopard supports many old printers, scanners, etc., but not all of them.
I would keep your present machine in case there are problems with your old hardware and Leopard/Intel.

Transfer ipod touch's app. softwares from Window OS to Mac OS

I just got my new iMac recently, please advise me how to transfer my iPod touch's app. softwares, music, video and other files from my previous Windows OS to Mac OS.

I think that is the old "January update", I'm not so sure it is necessary to transfer that one but it would go here -
~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Applications
Look here for the latest 2.0 etc. updates -
C:\Documents and Settings\"name"\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
Even then I'm not sure even these are required but best back them up to be safe.
I'm not sure where the go in Mac OS X though.

Installing 10.2 error message at processing essential system software.

Due to some type of software glitch I have had to reinstall my OS X software. I am able to make it to certain parts of the install before I am given the "error installing software, please try again" The furthest I am able to go is about 20 % in at the "processing essential system software" warning. It then quits out on me. Sometimes it doesn't even get that far. Any help would be appreciated....

Which Mac model are you upgrading?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What type of upgrade are you attempting? Erase & Install, Simple Upgrade, or an Archive & Install?
Did you install a Firmware Update, if one is available?
Are you using the Full Retail Version, of the Jaguar Install CD?

May i know how to get my app. software auto arranged in alphabetically order or time order?
The reason i ask is sometimes i add and remove app. software at sync application, but after sync, i notice the icons are not well organized.

Time order? The time of what? I don't understand what you mean by this, surely the only time factor applying to an application is the time you downloaded it or it was created, neither of which is going to be visible when using you Touch.
But if you want to arrange applications in alphabetical or any other order, simply touch and hold on any application icon until all icons begin to shake. You can then drag and drop them into the order you want. Once you have them arranged as you want, click the *Home Button.*

Asha 501 : essential apps missing

Hi,
now that Whatapp is finally on the horizon, I wonder when other essential apps will be available on the Asha 501? Most importantly, I would need the following apps:
dropbox
Skype
here maps (for Cambodia)
Mail exchange (so that I can sync calendar and contacts)
Does anybody have any news on these apps or similar apps that could be used instead?

We don't have any info when those apps will be available for Asha501, hoping few of those arrives on the next update which still is not sure when Nokia have planned, they don't generally release update information before.
My Asha 501 came pre-installed with Here maps and there it was updated recently too. Here maps on Asha 501 doesn't have offline maps, it uses network services to show you the location and it does shows you direction from place A to place B.

Then boot in Safe Mode, (holding Shift key down at bootup; takes longer to boot this way so be patient), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

Keyword Blocking App/software

I have a very young son who has been checking out inappropriate sites. I blocked access to those sites by using hostfiles but just to be extra secure, I'd like to block some keywords also.
Can one suggest an app/software that I can use to block keywords so any page associated with them wont load?
I tried K9 and CutX free trial and was NOT impressed one bit with neither. I would rather use an app that's free but IF the product works well, I wouldn't mind paying a licensing fee for it.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
