  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router.  The Time Capsule looks amazing.  However, I have Macs and PC's in my how.  So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule.  I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

    Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    MS DOS FAT32

  • I want to connect an Airport Express via WiFi to my internet connection and then connect its LAN port to the WAN port of a Time Capsule. Will then any device connected to the time capsule wirelessly be also connected to the internet?

Background is I can't hook up my time capsule directly to my internet connection via network cable. I tried to extend the network via Wifi, but that did not work. At the moment I have two wireless networks, one with internet connection and another one with my time capsule. So to use time machine I have to change my network all the time.
Can I buy an Airport Express, use is as a client to my internet connection wifi and provide that connection via network cable to my time capsule and all it's wifi clients?

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • How to connect to an iMac in a LAN through Time Capsule as router

    SITUATION:
We have a Time Capsule at work, which we use as a router for a LAN which includes 2 iMacs, 1 PowerBook G4, and an HP Officejet Printer.
The Time Capsule connects to the internet through Ethernet, via a Static IP address. All the computers connect to the internet wirelessly through the Time Capsule, and the printer is wired to the Time Capsule.
We are trying to connect remotely to the computers in the office, keeping in mind that the Time Capsule as a router is in the middle.
    SET-UP WORK DONE SO FAR:
We opened the Airport Utility, selected the Time Capsule, Advanced tab, Port Mapping option and added a device, using the local IP address of the computer we want to make available remotely.
In the Port Mapping Setup Assistant that comes up, we ran three scenarios: (1) left the Service field without a choice once and then (2) with Apple Remote Desktop and (3) Personal File Sharing.
In the first scenario, we chose 49999 as Public and Private TCP Ports (we read the figures could be in an approximate range of 42-65k), while we left the UDP Ports fields blank. In the other two scenarios we left untouched both the UDP and TCP Ports that appear as defaults when the Service field is selected.
We hit the Continue button and the Update button afterwards. The Time Capsule saved the information and restarted.
In the Sharing preference under System Preferences we chose Remote Management and clicked on the Computer Settings... button. We checked the VNC button and included a password.
    REMOTE ACCESS WORK:
When we wanted to access the iMac that we just thought we had set up for remote access using a different computer connected to another network, we could not connect.
We used Chicken of the VNC to try to access the local iMac, using the Time Capsule Static IP address and the VNC password set in the Sharing/Remote Management preference in the iMac. We have been unable to access the local computer connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule so far.
    We get the following message:
    Could not connect to server
    Connection timed out: ()
    Any help out there?

The TC is not a streaming device.. it is merely a hard disk mounted inside a router.
That means My Receiver.. whatever that happens to be.. has to be a media device that can play from a network file store.. So there is no settings in Airport utility.. because the TC is too dumb to need to know anything.
BTW the TC is a bad place to store files, as it has no way to back itself up.

  • How to connect a hard drive on the usb port of my time capsule?

    Hello,
I have a 1T iomega HD and would like to connect it to my TIME Capsule to either mak a back up of it or to expand the capacity of my TimeCapsule.
    thanks
    Ric

You now have two drives that can be used for Time Machine backups, or other storage needs.
You need to understand though that Time Machine will not simply continue backups to the USB connected drive once the Time Capsule is full. You will have to start over with a new "master" backup on the USB drive and then proceed with incremental backups again.
If you plan to copy the contents of the Time Capsule to the USB drive, that is a separate type of backup called an "Archive". I am not clear if you want to do this or not.
Are you able to "see" both the Time Capsule drive and the USB connected drive in the Finder, or do you need some tips on that?

  • How easy is it to plug a windows laptop into the ethernet port of a Time Capsule and for it to get an internet connection?

I use Time Capsule to distrubute wifi thoughout my home.  I have an office laptop (windows) that my company's IT dept won't install a wireless card in (for security reasons????).  Can I get an intenet connection to the laptop if I connect it to an ethernet port on the back of the TC?

Can I get an intenet connection to the laptop if I connect it to an ethernet port on the back of the TC?
If you can get an Internet connection when you test using your iMac's Ethernet port, then you know that the Ethernet port is working on the TC and the Ethernet cable is also working.
You should be able to get a connection on any other computer in the same way.
If you cannot get an Internet connection on the PC with the same hook up, then you will need to do some troubleshooting on the PC....or call the IT guys at the company to find out what type of block they may have on the PC.

  • Iphone will not connect to wi-fi now that I have hooked up my Time Capsule

I finally got my Time Capsule hoohed up and working and now my iphone and both my ipods will not connect to the wi-fi network.   I had airport express before I got the Time Capsule and the wi-fi worked fine with my iphone and both ipods.  How can I fix this.  Can I use my old airport express and the Time Capsule?  How?

    The TC should work..
You need to lock the wireless channel for 2.4ghz band.
To do that log into the TC.. (airport utility, manual setup, airport, wireless page)
Change wireless name to short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
In advanced change the 5ghz name to different one.. but same rules. eg TC5ghz.. (name for 2.4ghz can be TC24ghz)
    Lock wireless to a/n - b/g
Lock the wireless channels for 2.4ghz.. (5ghz also but less of an issue, the iphone and ipods use 2.4ghz).
Select one of the 3, non overlapping channels, 1, 6, 11
Start with 6, if that fails, try 11 and lastly 6.
Set security to either WPA or better WPA2 Personal. Passkey should be same rules as above.. but 8-12 characters, non-dictionary.
You can plug the airport express into the TC, but IMHO better getting the TC working.

  • Can i use new TC to connect wirelessly to home network and plug my tv into the time capsule for internet connectivity?

My new tv needs to plug into an ethernet port for internet connectivity.
I'm hoping it can plug into my TC however my TC is wirelessly connected to my current home network... how can i get this to work?
TC version A1470 (i think, brand new)
    Many thanks.
    Ben

If the TC is connected to a wireless network provided by another Apple router, then the TC extends the network by default, and the Ethernet ports are enabled on the TC.
If the TC is connected to a third party network wirelessly, then it must have been setup to "join" the wireless network. When the TC is set up this way, the TC becomes a wireless hard drive and nothing more. The Ethernet ports are not enabled when the TC "joins" a wireless network.
So, a logical first troubleshooting step would be to confirm "how" the TC is currently set up. To do that.....assuming that you are using a current or recent version of AirPort Utility on your Mac.......
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the TC icon, then click Edit in the smaller window
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Check the setting for Network Mode and report on that

  • Connecting itunes to an amp- can it be done using a time capsule?

I have an amp about 6 feet away from my Time Capsule and wondered if there was a cheap and easy way to be able to play music from my itunes library through the amp? My iMac is elsewhere in the house and I would like to use my iphone to remotely access the library and play music in the room where the time capsule and the amp are.
I have done some research and buying an Airport Express would be one way of doing it. Seeing as I already have a wireless network with my Time Machine & have printer sharing, etc. it seems I would be paying for a lot of functionality I already have. It also seems an expensive solution for what I need to do. Could you recommend another way of doing it?

Unfortunately the Time Capsule is missing the circuitry that the AirPort Express has that processes the AirTunes stream to get it out to your amp. So, whether the Time Capsule or your iMac is hosting the iTunes Library, in order for your amp to be able to use it, you will need the Express.

  • Airport Extreme Upstairs conected via switch and cat6 to time capsule downstairs.  Is it possible?

I have used an airport extreme connected to my cable modem for a while.   This is upstairs in my office.   Reception downstairs in my den was spotty at best.   I had a time capsule I was no longer using, and set it up downstairs as an extender.   This some what worked, but the reception was still hit or miss.   I have now wired my house with Cat 6, and have a switch set up in my office.   My question is:  Is there any way to hard wire the time capsule in with the wired network, but still have it extend my wireless network?   I would also be ok if it had to be a second wireless network all together.   I forgot to mention, any time I hook the time capsule up to the network, either through the WAN port or one of the others, it seems to crash the network.  Thanks!
The set up is as follows:
Cable Modem - Airport extreme - Switch - wall - Time Capsule (I hope).  Any input would be appreciated.

    OK, thanks for the info.
I assume that you have verified that the Ethernet cable is working at the end where the Time Capsule will be located. If not, temporarily connect the Ethernet cable to the laptop and turn off the wireless on the laptop.
Make sure that you can get a good Internet connection that way, which will verify that the Ethernet cable is working.
If you cannot get a good Internet connection this way, do not proceed until the issue has been resolved. Turn the wireless back on at the laptop when you are done with the testing.
With the Time Capsule powered on for a few minutes...but the Ethernet cable not connected yet....hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.  Just below that, click on Time Capsule
(The screen shot below illustrates an AirPort Express instead of a Time Capsule)
As soon as you click on Time Capsule, AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze the network.
After a minute or so, AirPort Setup will indicate that the Time Capsule will be set up to "extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule and click Next
AirPort Setup will indicate that the network is being setup to "extend using Ethernet". When you see the message of Set Up Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now providing a wireless signal with the same name and password as the AirPort Extreme network, so devices will be able to move or "roam" from one area to another and stay on the same "big" wireless network.
If you want to assign a different name to the Time Capsule network, open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Change setting for Wireless Network Name. You can keep the same password if you want, or assign new passwords for the Time Capsule network.
Click Update to save the new settings.

  • External Hard Drive Connected via Time Capsule USB

I've saved all my iMovie files on an external hard drive originally connected to my iMac via a USB port. Now, I'm connecting the same hard drive to the USB port on my Time Capsule but iMovie can't access the files. The hard drive shows up in iMovie but has a yellow triangle with a "!" on it? What is my problem here?

You can probably fix this by creating a symbolic link to your time machine-attached drive. I have never done this myself, so you may want to search the iMovie 08 forum for Time Machine and//or Symbolic Link.
The search function is on the right just above your name.

  • Connecting a G-Raid to Time Capsule

I am trying to connect a G-Raid disk to the USB port on the time capsule, but I cannot see the G-Raid disk to configure for use using time machine. Any ideas?

That drive should be usable that way, but may require a powered USB hub.  The port on the TC is vastly underpowered;  most self-powered drives will work without help, but some of the larger ones won't.
There's nothing in any Apple tech articles, but I've read that a partition over about 2.2 GB either may not be recognized on the TC or you may only be able to use the first 2.2 GB or so.
Try a powered hub;  if that doesn't work, try spliting the HD into 2 partitions (connect directly to your Mac to do that) and see if it's recognised that way, with the powered hub.  If not, there may be a problem with the port or other innards of the TC.
Note that backups can't "span" from the TC's HD to another volume;  for any one Mac, you can back up to either the TC's internal HD or the external HD (unlike the TC's internal HD, you can partition the external).
When connected to the TC, it should show up in Airport Utility something like this (a 500 GB Seagate with 6 partitions):
EDIT:  Be sure the drive is formatted for a Mac -- any variant of Mac OS Extended.
